I Screwed Up By Buying An E36 M3 Lemon 

I bought an m3 in 2008. fucking thing died on my way home from the place I bought it. the main things were: vanos leaking oil, as well as the whole engine, air filter had probably never been changed, holes in the exhaust system, the carbon fiber air intake was broken and leaked, the car had also been crashed at some point. I payed about 5-6000 pounds roughly calculated. sold it for about 2000 6 months later. drove about 900 kms one way to buy that car, and I was in the middle of a cancer treatment. too bad the guy who sold it totally fucked me. so don't feel too bad about yours! I drive an impreza today and am fully recovered from both the m3 and the cancer.

If you own a 10 year old+ BMW, it leaks oil. Just one of those facts of life. Generally, unless you're capable of doing all the work, it's not worth fixing. Starts with valve cover, then oil pan gasket, oil filter housing, and finally, timing cover. Unless you ave the time, tools and expertise to replace the timing cover gasket, don't fix any of the others unless it's major.

My question is this. Why didnt you get this test done on the car before you bought it. In canada where I live the owners that are selling their cars on craigslist or wherever are completely fine with you meeting up at a shop and getting a full inspection done (at the buyers expense)... Seems like you kinda screwed yourself over, and you could have avoided spending over 10k pounds on a +16 year old car.

Pro tip for the States folks: you can request to see the techs go over your car and (legally in most states) they have to comply, if not you can dispute it afterwards. Had this experience myself.

On the strength of this video, I used Munich Legends for a pre-purchase inspection of my 2011 BMW M3. They inspected it thoroughly, produced a report, and I got the dealer I was buying the car from to sort out the couple of issues (non-cosmetic) found which was 1 tyre to be replaced and rear brake discs and pads to be replaced. Since I bought the car, it's been sweet as a nut! Clearly they did a good job on the pre-purchase inspection. Happy days! :)

A lesson any seasoned used car buyer should learn: No one sells perfect used cars. It's your job to find out why they are selling.

A very nit picky inspection. This is an older vehicle. They don't stay perfect forever regardless if you want them to or not. Even if he had paid 4x the price for a "perfect" example there would have been something on the list that needed to be repaired. Cars are complex machines. They are hard enough to make perfect out of the factory. Add a few years of age to a vehicle and that "perfect" target becomes more and more expensive to maintain. While there were a few things that needed attention on the list it would have been very easy to fix many of the things on that list without breaking the bank.

Who buys an E36 without looking at the underbody first? Especially in Britain, where rust is at it's finest. You just fell in love with the looks and didn't realize she had something infectious down there. You should have learned that lesson decades ago.

Reminds me of a BMW I bought several years ago. I went into it thinking, "I know what I'm doing." I learned a lesson that is, no I don't. I drove it for a year or two then got rid of it. Now I'm driving a 10yr old VW Golf TDI and it's running great.

The car could be 20 plus years old! I am not surprised it has issues and the repair costs don't shock me. I hope you are spending the money to make it new again.

We need to teach more people how to repair cars. the amount of people saying it's not worth repairing because of resale value are troubling to me. As soon as you buy a new car, it loses enough value that it's not worth paying off if you're only worried about resale value. 99% of cars are depreciating assets. But if you know how to do some work and find deals, you will save money over buying new. And you're keeping cars from being crushed. everything is disposable now because consumers have been told to only think about short term money. If you are not a used car lot, don't worry about it. Just drive the thing and get your money's worth.. The market needs to adjust to less waste. take pride in keeping something alive

i feel like this is every reasonably priced e36 these days, at least in the US, Once you've taken ownership and sorted out the issues they end up being phenomenally reliable(at least the US spec, although we are megggaa jealous of the s50b32 and its factory ITBS).

Just pay AA or RAC guy around £100 and they go through ever single part of the car, including OBD code scan, trolly jack to get right underneath. You then have total peace of mind!

Bullshit title. That's not a lemon at all. You bought an old, driven, used car. It's not a brand-new showroom car. You could drive that car for a long time with the problems it has; it's not going to blow up because the diff has a tiny leak. IT'S OLD. That's also expected stuff on an M3. That car is in great shape for it's age. Of course a car that old is not going to be perfect. The rust can be patched or left; you have to expect rust on most cars unless they're garage queens. The oil leak is typical. Leaks are expected on BMWs; they all do that. After being on the road that long, things are going to be not perfect on it. Some things are going to have some play, and there is going to be a leak here and there on a BMW. There may be a clunk or a squeak here or there. None of these things make a car a lemon; that makes a car a car. If that's an issue just don't buy used cars. What type of car people are you? Are you expecting the steering wheel to be as tight as it was on day one? Of course not! That's nothing really even wrong; that's just using the steering wheel and it gets play over time.

This is ridiculous! It's not a lemon, it is a 12 plus year old car, this mechanic is getting paid to note down evry bit of rust etc. Any car this age would have all this and more even if it has hardly been driven, You would be lucky that it doesn't need a gear box or engine rebuild, A car this age would need a full respray to look it's best anyway. Stuff can start to rust within two years if it gets any type of scrape or damage.

always buy from respected dealers or if you go private... have an inspection done before money exchanges

You got a good buy, once you pay out for the repairs to make it perfect then you'll be a bit out of pocket, majority of the stuff is just wear on an old car, you weren't ripped off, I don't know anyone who takes their car into a garage every few weeks just to see if anything is wearing out or needs replacing. As most garages would be more than happy to replace any slightly wearing out part. Take it to quick fit and they'll convince you to replace the entire exhaust system, brakes, disks and tyres as they are all starting to wear lol

He was so worried about the rust on the car meanwhile here in canada, cars that are only like 5 years old have rust on them bcuz of the winters we get here lmaooo, my brothers 2009 pontiac's door is completely rusted out at the bottom and we haven't bothered to look underneath lol

This is why you ALWAYS bring a used vehicle to a mechanic before you buy it. It doesn't help that European cars tend to be endless money pits when they get older.

Kind of crazy that he bought this for 6k only 5 years ago (and was embarrassed to admit it) and the cheapest you can find one today is like 15k or something.

My 97 m3 has 160.000 on it new water pump is all that's been done and it runs and drives perfectly I paid 3000$ for it!!! Has rims and is lowerd and a few mods. Beautiful car. I did a small video on it Saturday on my channel if y'all want to see it and yes I only paid 3000$ for it from my room mate

ive had my m3 since 1999 well im the only owner and theres only 64k miles on it and i never needed any major fixes except for the center air control console recently that cost me 1600.00$ to fix it kept turning on and off by itself after i got a smog check.

Conversation with original seller: Ere mate got this old BMW going for a song, only done 130k miles and it's just shy of 7k, not much wrong with it that you can see, well apart from the lights, the windows and the handbrake, oh and if you put the radio on you won't be able to hear the noise from the wheel, I mean road, time you have the work done you will be getting on for 11k, Yes I know you could have bought a newer one for that money, but this one will get you lots of views and sympathy likes and some rude comments.

That's what happens when you buy a used high mileage BMW ... prepare your wallet (B-rake-M-y-W-allet), if the car you want has over 100.000kms (63.000 miles) don't pay more than 3.000 euros/pounds, for every 10.000kms subtract 1.000 euros/pounds.

An E36 lemon is still way better than just about any other car. But any 20 year old car is going to be a risk, so you just have to be super paranoid when choosing one to buy.
