***INSIDER TAKE *** Essential lore within I paused to write this before i got to the end. Great reaction! I want to talk about your comment at the end, when Tyler is singing while playing piano. Sorry, this is long. Tyler writes the lyrics and music. Many songs have deep lyrics focused on mental health, but they typically also have an upside. Tyler is also very intentional with everything. He loves to tell a story, and he weaves a thread through so many songs. Everyone has told you to watch the "I am Clancy" trailer/ lore synopsis followed by "The Story" playlist on their channel. (Then re-watch I am Clancy again). But even that isn't the beginning of the story. Tyler has said they "have been telling the story since the very beginning", and mental health has been at the core. The story has evolved over time from the emotions that can break us down, to the creation of an antagonist to put a face on those emotions (Blurryface), then a place where the emotions reside (Trench), then a protagonist who maybe will defeat those emotions (Clancy) - but i don't know the outcome yet, i could be wrong about Clancy. In "Ride" you talked about how Tyler is filmed almost as though he is in conversation with another side of himself, and he kinda is. "Ride" is on the album "Blurryface", the antagonist. Blurryface is a representation of Tyler's insecurities, that part of himself that beats him down and tells him he's not good enough. You may have noticed that in the 3 videos you have watched, Tyler has black paint on his neck and hands. This represents anxiety over the things he creates with his hands and voice, as well as the feeling of suffocation that accompanies his anxiety. I hope this helps you as you explore Tyler's songs, and the emotions he has allowed us to see and feel. I look forward to your journey. P.S. This rabbit hole goes deep! I agree Ode to Sleep will give you a bit of Josh and Tyler’s history (plus it’s my favorite song). As far as lore, I’d start with “I am Clancy” to get a sense of what is going on and then check out the playlist “The Story” on the twenty one pilots RU-vid channel to fill in the gaps. There are certainly other songs and MVs with lore in them, but part of the fun is figuring that out for yourself. Twenty One Pilots most popular video, and second most popular video, are not on their channel. You'll find "Stressed Out" and "Heathens" on Fueled by Ramen (their label). "Ride" is number 3.

It is very important to remember that, yes, the topics covered in the majority of their music are mental health centered. Crises of faith. And the struggle of feeling inadequate. Regardless of your talents. However, each and every song is a fight against those thoughts and how you need to keep persevering against the negative emotions that plague all of us. In one form or another. Were I you, I'd take it right back to their self-titled album. People will try to get you focused on the lore. But that's not super impactful until you see the underlying themes of each preceding album. Once you get where the lore comes from, then you'll understand the necessity for their creating the world of Trench. And the outlet it provides. The lore is really a way for us to "watch along" as they battle the issues they, and many of their fans, struggle with.

“Having many people speak at once…” This song is off the album Blurryface. Tyler has explained that Blurryface is a character he created as an embodiment of his own insecurities. He paints his neck and hands to represent Blurryface’s influence on him-he’s insecure about what he makes with his hands and he said that anxiety feels like hands tightening around his neck. Blurryface then gets developed fully into the lore but that’s how it started and that’s what you see here.

The song "Ode to sleep" is about their rise, "Migraine" is a staple, and "Trees +speech live at Fox Theater" shows how the band and their fans love one another. One point to make about the guys. it shot outside at night with a low watt halogen shot at v high ISO so when the floods crank on the shot is over exposed. the high key washes a ton of details so it's used sparingly during the drop/break/bridge parts. it also makes the ending funny because they're wearing sunglasses in the dark to protect themselves from the floods. side note, those floods are referred to as 'audience abuse lights' in a stage setting.

Tyler Joseph has always been super proficient when it comes to playing the piano, ESPECIALLY the piano, keys, Bass, & Ukulele. Which in the past have been some of his instrumental talents. He also learned how to play electric guitar as of 2020 while he was stuck inside during the pandemic. Josh Dun is proficient on the drums as well as the Trumpet, and will occasionally play it during live shows.

Now that your hooked, I recommend starting from the start, though first record doesn't have videos. The story is cool but it's a deep cherry on top of the Sunday if you get my meaning. If you want interesting songs with good videos I recommend: "Ode to sleep", "Car Radio", "heavy dirty soul", " chlorine", and "my blood". Oh and my personal favorite song of thiers is "Migraine".

Ahh Joe E! You’ve no idea how much you’re going to love this journey! So excited for you! What I’d say is that the lore is super low-key in lots of tracks and difficult to pick up on without being through the last 10 years with them - and even then, us clikkies still Stevie amount ourselves about it lol! It’s not just the music, it’s the online treasure hunts for clues, the Clancy diaries online, the live streams, social media posts - honestly, it’s hard work being a tøp fan 😂 !! It’s so worth it though - these guys pay us back in absolute spades - especially in live shows! I’d definitely say to I am clancy and then the top universe is your oyster! Lol!

Great reaction. Yeah, TOP doesn't miss, and their visual artistry is essential right alongside their musical and lyrical genius. Everything has a meaning, and their layers have layers. Def recommend checking out the vids related to the lore before the I Am Clancy vid. Others have posted the list. The Clique (TOP fans) won't steer you wrong! Also, on this vid, one of the things I appreciate in addition to the music and deep lyrics is the scene where Josh puts the sunglasses on Tyler and Tyler does the same for Josh before the stage lights come up. You say that a hug wouldn't fix things. You might be right, but that hug. That little bit of kindness and empathy could very well save a life. So, please never let go of that. I have struggled with depression for about 20 years now, and there have been many times where I have been extremely low, contemplating the big S, and wished I had someone that could do that for me. Also, TØP's signature thing is juxtaposing deep, difficult topics with hope, and pleas for people to not give in and to stay alive. But as for the lore, watch I Am Clancy, then watch the lore videos in order. Heavydirtysoul -> jumpsuit -> nico and the niners -> levitate -> Saturday -> the outside -> overcompensate (which may have already done, but I just don't remember it.) On the periphery of the lore, but not part of the core story is Choker, The Hype, and Chlorine

For the mention of disassociative identity disorder mention (formerly known as multiple personalities disorder), the community from my experience prefers the term plural. --- a "brief" overview of plural Being plural is a spectrum of basically how many egos, ego parts, and instincts exist in different shapes and versions of themselves and how much information can be shared between them. Although there are also parallels to two spirit, which itself invokes multiple genders and multiple selves. Egos and self expression go hand and hand so it makes sense that the spacial regions that shift would cause shifts in expression. Different regions in the brain have different gender expressions for cis and genderqueer people. So cis people have generally more of the gender responses that match their sex, gender queer can be anyone spectrum where maybe it's flipped or it's closer to 50/50 or it changes. So for plural genderqueer people can have ranges of expression with wide variation. For instance the range in eyesight for plural people is 5x greater than singlet people when they switch. Allergies as well can change, and reactions to medication. I like to compare it to crashing a save in a game and rebooting partial saves with partial inventory and skills slots. Shared Hp and shared mana bars and having multiple saves up at the same time is doable but takes a lot of energy, like running multiple saves at the same time so unless you simplify (like from pure emotion to internal verbal communication) or overclock, or integrate (lotsa work taking down information barriers.) It takes a longgg time for information to process and trickle through. The range between selves varies and part of it is that the main voice doesn't know, because they are keeping the glitched items in the saves that crash the least with it or were able to hid it so others can't find it. It keeps the system safe. The ego doesn't shatter per say, the most studied cases are basically the ego didn't solidify as one as there were not the conditions for that.

*yo, sorry not sorry but this is long* Okay, I have a different take that goes beyond “The Story” playlist. But go ahead and start with I Am Clancy because it’s gonna give you some insight into what hints or motifs to look for in other videos. Most people are going to tell you the lore starts with heavydirtysoul. It does not, even Tyler says it doesn’t. For example: “Goner” was written when Tyler was 17, the video was released in 2012. BUT it is also the final song on the blurryface album (2015), and heavydirtysoul starts playing right at the end of the 2012 video… heavydirtysoul is the first song on blurryface, because *it’s all a cycle.* In I Am Clancy, he emphasizes the word “vessel” which is also their 2013 album title. Album art on Spotify and such was changed to have red tape, including Vessel. So again, it didn’t really start with heavydirtysoul on blurryface. The problem becomes that so much only becomes apparent much later. Such as Tyler’s literal blurred face in “Holding On to You” and the beginning of the lore is in those lyrics.
