Vivienne Westwood was a fashion and cultural icon, and one of the designers who inspired me to go into fashion. Here we examine her unique approach to both modern and historical fashion, from 1970s punk to the mini crini of the 1980s and beyond, and use her methods as inspiration for a 1660s/70s-but-make-it-modern look.
This is the first video in the series, and focuses on making the pattern/mock-up for a pair of 17th century stays, and a skirt.

Awesome video. I think it's pretty punk! Viv's whole thing was plaid, which is why we associate plaid with punk, but there's no reason florals can't be punk as well. I know Betsey Johnson used florals a lot in her early days in her street inspired punk fashions and Anna Sui uses florals all the time and her work also borrows heavily from street fashion.

Nice- it seems the whole point is to take something (plaid, florals) and subvert the usual association. Maybe I’ll incorporate plaid into the next piece…

I have made a fully-boned mock-up of the Sittingbourne stays (#7 in PoF 5), and they had the same apparent weirdness in the side seam of the flat pattern. When I whip stitched together the fully-boned pieces, they lined up perfectly. The seemingly mismatched curves do give the stays shape. The skirt looks great with the Dorothea Sabina bodies. I'm looking forward to the finished look.

That’s really good to know- I’ve since basted the stays’ pieces together and added some boning but they’re still wobbly- I think I’ll go ahead and bone the mock-up fully to see what happens. Thank you!

@@anotherdreamgonewest I got curious because I have never actually seen the pattern for the V&A stays made, so I measured the seams. It looks like some of the pieces in these stays are actually slightly off. I did these measurements by taking the flat pattern pieces and laying them out with the seam alignment marks lined up. You can kind of see how this is supposed to work in discussion on pattern drafting on p. 155 of PoF 5. (I'm using the pattern piece numbers from 17th-century Women's Dress Patterns book 2 for clarity's sake.) On seam M-N, piece 2 is about 1/4" longer than piece 1. Seam E-F is perfect. On Seam C-D, piece 3 is about 1/4" longer than piece 4. On seam A-B, piece 4 is slightly longer than piece 5. I think that in the construction of the original, the stay-maker must have coped with these irregularities by easing the seams in the unboned sections around the armscye. ETA: The side seam on the Sittingbourne stays is almost perfect, which is probably why I had an easy time putting them together.

I apologize for that, I think this was 3 videos before I figured out how to level out the background music. I wish I could go back and fix it. I hope the volume is improving in the newer videos!

Thanks for sharing your brainstorming, planning and construction processes. I know when my head space is going through the same processes, a sense of euphoria overtakes me. I've made nightgowns from old bedsheets and a few shirts as well. As new fabric cost is rather too expensive for me, I've gone and bought a new top sheet from Walmart for projects. Some of them, I'm still wearing after ten years. I have some salvaged sheets from the hotel that I plan on working into future projects.
