I Shot JPEG For A Day! 

I used to be a RAW only shooter. When I bought my Olympus camera’s I started shooting Raw+jpeg. Nowadays I hardly ever bother with the RAW files. Recently printed a book with all b/w jpegs straight out of camera and they all look great, it’s the content that matters.

It's nice watching a photographer on youtube, taking photos without the crutch of a tripod and get good photos. 100% Olympus.

Am I the only person who shoots jpegs and then enjoys editing them, in Snapseed?

I'm just reading the comment below whilst typing this, and smiling to myself, because my comment is in complete contrast! I must confess I never shoot RAW!😆😆But that's because like you Chris, I'm not much of an editor. I do the minimal editing in post that I can get away with, so I like to just use the Jpegs. It works for me!

imagine the fun of the challenge of getting the composition and exposure "right" all at once in camera! this can be so exciting not to mention the instant gratification plus it will make your raw shooting stronger

I love the B&W „dramatic tone“ setting on my Olympus cameras. Doesn’t work with everything, but I love to play around with it. I add a frame in camera, too. Seeing the effects in the viewfinder helps me, too

I just watched another video about RAW vs JPG and one of the points was the range of colors you can get with a raw photo. I then clicked on this video and was greeted with "Im going to be shooting in monochrome" lol This is still a very informative and great video, I just thougth that was funny and had to mention it

I must confess I never shoot JPEG, not because I consider myself a 'true photographer' but it is simply a case of fear of missing out on the complete potential I get with a RAW image. I get why people do though, but no matter how many times I have tried, two photos in I flick back to RAW lol. I could shoot both and make the decision when I get home but for some reason that doesn't appeal either as it just means more photos to compare. I also love post processing which would be a big part of that :) Keep up the content Chris.

Actually I only rarely use RAW. The Olympus cameras have a great JPEG Engine and I am happy with that. Depends on individual requirements I gues.

Nice vid! I shoot both RAW and JPEG. There is a certain beauty in pictures "as is" without any post processing or filters. Reminds me from my early days shooting 35mm film. But sometimes the camera does not fully capture scene and some post processing is needed. Today I usually decide if its RAW or JPEG before stepping out the door because I know what will work or not depending on what I will photograph.

You could shoot Raw and JPEG as I do. I like some of the Art Styles on the Olympus. I am hearing the rapid clicking when you press the shutter button … are you shooting in Burst mode?

I think the point of difference is ‘who edits the picture?’ Either the photographer does, therefore retaining more data in the Raw file to play with, or the camera engineer edits the picture, (based on manufacturers pre determined parameters for editing the image). It therefore decides all the parameters to apply including sharpening, noise reduction etc. This then makes post editing much more limited. If you set up some specifics as you did, then you are actually overriding the jpeg decisions the camera makes anyway. I don’t think it is fair to say ‘shoot raw’ is a myth, but would agree that the statement needs clarification. I’m a new sub and am enjoying your vids.

Sure, you may get lucky and the camera's hijacking a key part of the process may yield acceptable results, but relying on an algorithm/AI to make "creative" choices removes much of what makes photography an art form. Here's the thing--you can have the "best of both worlds" if you shoot RAW+JPG (and use contrived filters if you wish--I sometimes use L Monochrome D on my G9). It's nice to see a potential "finished product" in the EVF, but it's rare that RAW processing can't improve upon a JPG. Even subtle changes can make or break an image, so why trust a third party to drive the process, as it's not really "your" image anymore--it's a collaboration with an unseen entity and I'm not keen on surrendering control of my images. There's P+S and there's photography. On the other hand, however one chooses to define "IQ" (no numbers or pixel peeping, please), many of the greatest photos ever made would fall short by todays "standards" of what constitutes a technically superior photo (and who cares?). How you generate images depends on what you want to do with them. If you're only posting to social media, then it doesn't matter too much (as they'll look different on different screens, so processing is largely wasted). To make the best prints (i.e., true photos), however, you need to start with RAW files (or film negatives). I shoot RAW+JPG (memory's cheap and I can fit way more images on a card than I care to curate in one sitting), using the JPGs as large "thumbnails" but processing/printing the RAWs. It's very satisfying transforming good images into great ones but you have to enjoy the process(ing). It's a Zen thing sitting in a dark room (although I also enjoy the darkroom) in front of my calibrated 4K 32" Benq seeing what I can do with the DxO (and sometimes Topaz) tools and pure joy when I see a print emerge from my Epson P900. "Likes" on Insta can't compare.

Yep... I've been shooting raw for 11 years. But started to hate photography because of all the time in front of the computer. Time I could have been writing, making photobooks or being outside. So I'm going to shoot jpegs for the rest of the year. Just nice normal looking colours that the Canon Camera Standard profile produces and only simple edits - straightening and cropping and the smallest exposure adjustment if necessary. Pretty much like when I get film scans back. The only reason I'll keep shooting both jpeg and raw is to have the raw files there in case I ever have to prove a photo is mine or that the content hasn't been majorly manipulated.

Hi Chris, great photos & a bloke after me own heart, hate editing , don't mind, if i find an odd one i really want to, but more than happy with jpegs & it was good to get more of a look at your leading lines & compositions & where you find a photo from . cheers mate📷📸

Nice shots and good video. In my opinion with good lighting, and if you get a well exposed shot the option of shooting JPEG is tremendously valid.

I have my camera set to shoot RAW + JPG. If I like the jpg, I can post it right away. If something is a little off, I can fix it from the raw and make a new jpg.

Have briefly tried Raw and will go back to JPEG. RAW is too tedious for ma and I am no perfectionist. I also keep my camera on monochrome for MAPS and if I want color will switch to auto portrait, or scenery mode. Automatically changes the OLY to color.

I always shoot raw and jpg and when I'm get home if I nail a jpg I won't edit the raw. The beauty of todays cameras is they allow you to shoot either or both formats.

When I used to shoot live bands for a living I always used jpeg,never saw the point of shooting RAW then converting them to jpeg before they were sent off..and I still shoot jpeg as I see no need for raw files,I use Google Picasa for 1 click B&W and the only thing you cannot do with jpeg in OM Workspace is the noise reduction.

My Fuji X-E1 I can pick raw+jpeg and pick three jpeg profiles. I really wish Olympus and Panasonic would add this feature.

Joy is art and art is instinct. I think we can become somewhat lazy with the crewtive process by relying on repetive editing procedure. Perhaps too much of a safety net? Leave the editing to computational process, allow the artist free rein to create! Thank you. An inspirational piece.

I don't know why i changed from Craw/jpeg M 16.9 to RAw .. tbh .. If you don't have a fast PC . The editing process is slower than a week in the jail . And recently reverted by to to CRAW/JPEG ... As i take sooooooo many sun pics . And the S.I.A on the Camera only capture in Jpeg ..

You know, I'll often go out for a photo walk or just a hike and bring the camera. I usually will shoot RAW + Fine JPEG and when I get home I tend to just edit the JPEGS because I like the way they turned out and can get straight to doing some creative work with the photo instead of the extra steps of the RAW processing. Sometimes I just don't do anything with them and use them as is. Other times, nothing but RAW and I dive deep into the editing process. It feels good to change it up, keeps things fresh for me. Most often if I take my camera to document family times, I just shoot JPEG because it lowers the pressure. Ironically, some of my best photos are captured that way...kinda like when I first started photography and just did it without all of the learning getting in the way. I feel like I need to intentionally forget some of that stuff and just shoot without expectation. Striving for a result really ruins it for me and kills the creative process.

But, I think B/W photography is more forgiving. That being said, I rarely shoot RAW. I used to shoot RAW+JPEG. But then I noticed that I rarely dealt with the RAW image. I could do whatever tweaks I needed with the JPEG image. Now, if I were getting paid and wanted to get every bit of juice out of the image, I'd go back to shooting both. But, for my computer and media, I find the JPEG's quite fine. Plus, I don't need so many cards with me all the time.

When I shoot to document my family I just shoot jpeg. If I'm shooting for professional work I shoot in raw and jpeg.

I shoot raw and jpeg, but mostly just edit with snapseed, Olympus user.

I prefer using the wonderfully tactile dials, buttons and levers on my Olympus in the field rather than using a mouse at home to maximize a shot. I'm going on over 6 months JPEG only and outside of a few scenarios like shooting a wedding (I'm not a wedding photographer) I can't imagine going back. I've been experimenting more with Live Bulb, Live Comp etc... that's also been a blast but requires a tripod. Great video!

Some times I rather just give out jpegs and don't feel like editing. On more bigger jobs I'll edit like a wedding but I'm sick of editing sometimes.

I will shoot JPEG if i need to share them immediately. However, I simply don't like allowing the camera to make editing decisions for me, which is effectively what you are doing when you shoot JPEGS. And the ability to correct JPEG images, in terms of exposure/WB/colour cast, is very limited. Why limit those choices when you don't have to? Why choose to shot B&W, instead of shooting RAW and also having the option to retain a colour version of the shot? Obviously, each to their own, but mostly RAW for me!

Ken Rockwell, on his website, claims that he mostly shoots jpgs. His opinion is quite interesting. You may already be aware of him. He also seems to irritate a few people because of his bold statements. BTW your black and white photos look very moody. Thanks for the video.
