This is actually one of my favorite Beatles songs. John Lennon's voice is awesome in this song. I love the way he goes from very high notes to very low notes. He does the same thing in "This Boy," but that song has a high, raw voice that could tear your vocal cords (another favorite). John plays a mean harmonica on this one though.

I loved his playing too, but John said he felt a bit embarrassed after a while, not being (according to himself) a "real player" like Little Walter, or someone. He claimed that all he did was "suck and blow" without actually mastering it. I'm glad that we got what we got, but I wouldn't trade his rhythm guitar stylings for anything. Another key to the Beatles sound, not as well noted, but as irreplaceable in the mix as Paul's bass, George's lead, or Ringo's drums.

I was about 11 or 12 when the first Beatles LP came out and my Mum and Dad bought me the first 4 albums for Christmases & Birthdays. The first 4 albums is more or less the Mop Top era when they were doing pretty standard 3 minute pop songs (brilliantly of course!) before they started getting more adventurous. I love all the Beatles output but those early pop song have a place in my heart. My current favourite of those early songs is 'Eight Days A Week'

I was four years old, an Army officer's kid living in Germany, when I first heard the Beatles, in late 1963. It's the Mop Top Beatles that I first heard, and although their entire run is completely sublime, it will always be the Mop Tops that best represent the Beatles to me. If I'm working around the house, it's those incredible harmonies and jangling guitars that keep my mood elevated and energy surging. In a crowd of people from ages two to ninety two, it's always the Mop Top music that get people moving and singing. I've seen dozens of Beatles tributes and been to sporting events where the music comes happily blasting through stadium speakers and it never fail to get the crowd going. Never!

The original soundtrack album from the Hard Day's Night film was a mono record. The stereo remix was years later and sounds "fake" to my ears. My cousins took me to see the film when I was just a boy in Scotland and I fell in love with the music. You picked up on the harmonica as did a lot of people at the time. Bob Dylan was big in those days and he had a big influence on The Beatles - Folk music was, after all, the basis for "Skiffle" and The Beatles were, at their founding, a Skiffle band. To me, it is the electric 12 string solo (played by George) that made this song special. I heard an interview with one of the founders of a band called "The Byrds", a chap by the name Roger McGuinn, and he said that when he a few friends went to see Hard Day's Night he saw George with the 12 string "Ricky" (Rickenbacker) and the next day he traded his banjo and 6 string acoustic guitar for an electric 12 string. "Mr. Tambourine Man", "Turn, Turn, Turn" and a whole host of hits were recorded on that guitar. Today Rickenbacker makes a Roger McGuinn signature model. The Beatles influence on the future of music was immeasurable.

In his later years, John Lennon dismissed many of his songs from this period. Though he did say You Can't Do That and If I Fell were 2 songs he was still quite proud of. The Beatles were moving out of their infancy. They were becoming adults. Their songs began to reflect this growth. Also, this is last time a harmonica plays a reoccurring riff throughout a Beatles song. Safe travels Hari, RNB

When a Beatles song like this one started playing on the radio long ago there was always an excitement to some degree. I well recall hanging around friends and anytime a Beatles song started up there would usually be someone saying something like, "Oh, it's Beatles. Turn it up!!" or "Hush! I like this one. Listen!", or things of this sort. Another good choice of a Beatles song, but then one can't go wrong picking any of them.

The vocals are doubled throughout the entire song until the final “that when I tell you that I love you”. That small change added John Lennon’s signature vulnerability. I don’t know if it was George martins idea or one of the Beatles, but it really elevates the song.
