Warning never take rocks out of the river to make a fire, when saturated rocks get hot they explode sending sharp splinters flying.
@derekgorman7939

I use a few things to combat midgies. Burn two incense sticks either side of your camp. They'll buy you some time and peace. Light large Limoncillo candles (not the tea candle size - they're not worth a fuck) Use the bug repellent wipes to wipe all exposed skin. Then use a repellent spray (spray the top of your top and your tent to keep them out of there). Have an "afterbite" pen handy if you do get bit. Also a smoky fire will do the job, but if its too early in the day for the fire just get a small wee one going. Hope this helps.
@RamblingOn
@RamblingOn 8 дней назад
Thanks a mill, I'm definitely going to try the candles and be smarter about where I camp. Alongside a river in an enclosed forest was not a good idea
@derekgorman7939
@derekgorman7939 7 дней назад
@@RamblingOn Do try the incense sticks too. They are quite effective but be sure to stand them up vertically (they'll last longer). One either side if the site should give you enough coverage. Also roll down your sleeves hahaha. Dont wear a hoody as they'll only get caught up in the hood part and then there's no getting rid of them. Yeah you should be able to get a few of the large ones in those pound shops now all over the place.

Thank you Jason for enduring all that you endured with those insects and pests - to graciously bring this video to all of your viewers. If I'm honest...I too am concerned about the chemicals in that spray. Truly love seeing your homeland. A bucket list journey for me one day. Hoping this means most of the back pain is a thing of the past and you are travelling well. Time for a cup of tea and a couple biscuits myself! Cheers friend!

They were horrendous, it was very hard to focus on filming when I was being bitten so much. I will only use that spray as a last resort now. I'm going to look into healthier alternatives. My back is still getting stronger but my entire right leg is not in a good way. All of my time and energy is spent working on it. I'm not out of the woods yet unfortunately 😄 Enjoy the tea, take her handy 💪

Good to see you and all your wee friends joining you for a night in the woods..... I'd say it was all the Tabasco you ate that killed them on contact! Had some luck with Smidge before as a spray, but tbh, a head net and retreat to the tent is sometimes the only option. Thanks for suffering out there so we dont have to!

🤣Nice one Jason, that was a good crack, lovely location & stream... Midges on mass have gotta be worse than mossies, although the later bite worse & they got me bad last year... But hopefully I'm better prepared now... I also use that Jungle Formula pump spray, always pack a headnet, would never be without my UV Bug Zapper Lamp for inside the tent & also take a few citronella T-light candles & burn sticks to dot around if sitting outside & I usually hang a lamp over on a branch, to hopefully distract them away from the tent abit...🙏 U had me crying with laughter when U dumped all that Tabasco on your food, i bet it got your eyes watering too...!😂 Best wishes & keep up the good stuff...👍

I personally prefer to use a stove but I'm not against having a fire. I just don't see the need to leave a fire scar or any trace of it. I've seen some of the bush craft channels, the good ones can have a fire and leave no evidence of it the next day. Fair play to those guys and gals

Jason when we are up the bog and getting eaten by midgies - we try baby lotion mixed with a bit of eurax. It seems to work. You might smell like a babys bottom but the hoors seem to get 'glued up' in the mix, and if you do get bit the eurax helps lots. Also l was laughing at you hoofing in the tabasco. I'm just the same. Go for it all! Then you get the mouth burnt off of you. Subscribed and great luck with the channel. Well done boyo :)

@@RamblingOn fair enough lad, but I reckon a few feet back might have made a bit of difference. And I know you don’t normally encourage damaging Forrest’s, so check out a small folding fire pit/ bbq. If you really want the water view, add a fire with a bitta schmoke to get rid of the bastards. Seriously though, if you are in a place they are rampant, not even a fire will help, but just moving a few feet back especially from any water source will defo make a difference. And if all else fails, attach a bright light about 10 feet away and use the fire for your camp light. Most important of all, don’t use any light getting into or out of the tent. If you do these things, midgets will never ruin a trip again.

@@NoelG-IREgreat info. I made the mistake of pitching by trees with a stream running through them a month ago, thinking it'd be a nice calming spot. I had citronella tea lights, bug spray and a fire going and still got ate alive for a few hours, woke up the next day absolutely covered in bites. The worst part is I had a huge open area beside me all to myself where I probably would have been free of them. Won't make that mistake again.

@@barrypatton6424 as a wise man once said, you only learn from your mistakes!!. I’m at the point now where I plan every trip around the weather. I don’t plan anything definite until about 2/3 days before and I’ll always pick the location based on weather. Have probably 2/3 places in mind just encase the 5 weather apps are all wrong. I don’t mind rain, snow, ice, or sun, but the wind is my number 1 enemy. It not only ruins camping, but also boating. Thank god for camper vans 😂😂😂
