I can explain Billy staying behind with only his blade for a weapon. He was challenging the Predator to a 1 on 1 duel. A Predator can choose to engage in such duels with those they considers worthy oponents. We see this at this film's climax when the Predator discards his mask and weapons, save for his wrist blades, to finish his fight with Dutch. Although we do not see it in the film, Billy was granted his duel. Source: My roommate during my first year at university was an avid comic book reader. In particular, he was a hardcore fan of Predator, Aliens, & AvP comics. One of the Predator comics he owned told the story of Billy's duel with the Predator.

So the thing with the Predator is he only attacks those with weapons. His main interest is the "sport" of killing them. That's why he took their bodies, so he could have them as "trophies". You hear Dutch tell Anna something to the effect of "He didn't kill you because you were unarmed. No sport." So Dutch understands what it's about at that point

I think the Predator paused to reflect that Dutch had transitioned from prey to opponent. It's no longer a hunt, it is a duel.

Billy thought he was going to die, anyway. He was tired of running and would rather die fighting right then and there. Also, some warrior cultures bled themselves before battle. I believe some Native American tribes did as well. I'm not an expert in that area. So, that's a guess. However, Billy is Native American. So, it stands to reason that's what he was doing as well. Go back and rewatch the scene where the Predator shoots at Dutch. The reason his arm didn't get blown off is because the Predator was aiming at his rifle, not him. If you rewatch the scene, you'll see the rifle gets destroyed and Dutch's arm and shoulder suffer some collateral damage.

Billy knew they were going to die so he tried to stand his ground and fight rather than die running as well as also trying to give the others time to get some distance. at least that's what he was hoping for anyway.

On a note you can see how broken and traumatized Dutch is by the end. Losing everyone and nearly his life. Sadly the girl in prey suffers no trauma you would expect a warrior dealing with such loss and trauma to have. Si she doesn't grow any. This is a bit more relatable

PS: The black pilot at the very end that picks up Dutch and says, "What the?...." was Kevin Peter Hall, the guy who played Predator. He was also the Pred in pt 2. He died in 1991. I know of him from another flick from 1984 called "The Wild Life" starring Chris Penn, Eric Stoltz, and Lea Thompson. It's so obscure that it's not even on DVD, but he played a bouncer at a strip club.

The titular creature is part of an interstellar warrior and tribal society with a strict code of honor. It looks to me like Billy prepares himself for a ritualistic warrior's death, by pulling his knife and cutting himself before he faces the Predator on that log. He says earlier that they're all gonna die. If he had expected to have any chance at all, he would not have thrown his gun in to water. I think that that the Predator's plasma weapon doesn't shoot Arnold's arm off because it impacts his gun instead of his arm. If you notice, the gun shatters. He still gets wounded from the blast though.

The helicopter pilot at the end of the film is the same actor who played the Predator. Also, it isn't that they made him look tall. He really is 7'2", about a foot taller than Arnold.

Predators have bad vision. The mask helps them to see in infrared. They can also adjust their tech so their mask can detect other spectrums of light. You didn't get to see that in this particular film though. -OG

So, they're still the Army. They're just Army Special Forces. They're not Green Berets or Rangers. Going off the dialogue between Dutch, Dillon and Major General Phillips, specifically when Dutch says, "We're a rescue team, not assassins," my best, educated guess is they're Delta Force. The reason I believe they are Delta is Delta's primary focus is counter-terrorism and hostage rescue, which ties back to what Dutch said about them being a rescue team. Hostage rescue is not necessarily in the wheelhouse of Green Berets and Rangers. That's what I remember, at least. So, it makes sense.

First time I saw this movie I was probably 3 years old. I was supposed to be in bed and snuck out and watched with the old folks and made it up to Mac getting blasted in the face. The noise I made when I freaked out scared the crap out of everyone 😀

Plot at start is a little murky, but what it was is, 1) Dutch's rescue team doesn't do offensive stuff/only rescues, 2) Dillon's CIA men were in helicopter, 3) two of Dillon's men from copter were taken by Latin guerillas, 4) six Green Berets lead by Jim Hopper went in to rescue them, but were skinned alive by Predator, 5) Dutch's team goes in and stops a Latin/Russian operation in an offensive style on a false pretense. That's it. However, one thing that the Pred writers never noticed was that there STILL WERE 2 American hostages at the guerilla camp. One was killed, but Dutch and others had no way of knowing if the other was alive. It was AFTER the firefight that Dutch learned the other American was dead, too. SO....why would Dutch be pissed off about a setup when there actually WAS the potential of saving 1 American hostage that he didn't yet know was dead? The writers should've made it known earlier that BOTH American hostages were dead, maybe by having the Russian shoot them both on camera. Then Dutch would have no reason or desire to demolish the camp at risk of his own men.

The whole camp thing is a little confusing mainly because it's not the main story but what I think happened was that camp was preparing for an inviation probably of some south American country and Dillions man te ones from the helicopter went in to try and stop it but got shot down and killed then the six green berets were sent in to try and do the same but ran into the predator and then Dillion tricked Dutch and his men into doing what the previous groups couldn't atleast that's what I understand

I think the Predator's plasma laser hit the buttstock of the weapon Dutch was using.

Billy sacrifices himself as his mental turmoil finally gets to him. He decides to go out in a duel in a vaguely Native Americanesque style. It's not a coincidence that they made the Native American guy a tracker w/ innate instincts who senses the Predator's presence. Yes, he was definitely Native Am, he was in Poltergeist 1 and 48 Hours as well. There's a collection of tropes where black, Asian, and Native American characters are innately connected to a spiritual plane that the white people can't reach. For black characters, it's called "The Magical Negro" trope. Spike Lee has talked about it. Black characters being magic like in The Green Mile or Twilight Zone The Movie, etc. Even Spielberg has used the Magical Negro trope. Billy is an offshoot of that. He feels his medicine bag at the moment of combat and goes out like a Native American warrior would (or so the white writers thought he would). They did the same thing w/ a Japanese character in a sequel. In Pt 2, there's a "Magical Latino" who has a magical necklace like Billy's medicine necklace and he has the same spidey sense that something supernatural is watching him. Likewise, Ana knows something is out there, too. It's Ana and Billy who react to the Predator's scream.

This is my favorite adrenaline fuel 80s film. Peak Arnold!

The camp was a group of south American gorilla rebel's from what I got they were working on possibly moving a massive amount of weapons or maybe even something nuclear across the boarder.

MY #1 FAVORITE ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIE! Facts you didn't know about the movie: Jean Claude van Damme played the Predator in some parts of the movie but quit production as he was tired of wearing the original suit which looked like a giant lizard insect hybrid. He wanted to kickbox Arnold but the producers refused. Kevin Peter Hall, RIP, 7'2" was cast as the titular character as he was more of an intimidating opponent for Arnold's character Dutch. Stan Winston Studios designed the PREDATOR suit for the film, and built an air conditioning unit inside the suit to prevent Hall from passing out. They would later return to the franchise in 1990 for PREDATOR 2. Half the cast and crew got food poisoning except for Arnold and Director McTiernan whom ate Spaghetti O's and PBJ Sandwiches. Schwarzenegger would later hire his own personal Chef to give the actors the food they needed. Sonny Landham RIP whom played Billy hired a bodyguard to protect people from him as he was prone to violent outbursts. Landham said in an interview that "We weren't making a movie, it was a survival story for all of us." It rained for 2 weeks making filming more difficult. The film was a box office and critical success making $100 million dollars ($350-360 million dollars today) against an $18 million dollar budget.

And at 46:47 have a guess who the black chopper pilot is?.... yep you guessed it... it's none other than Kevin Peter Hall himself who also played the Predator, you see as well as giving him the role as The Predator they also wanted to give him a cameo appearance in the movie to show watchers what he looks like without the suit and makeup and stuff. 🙂👍

Also, though it's weird that Dillon went along, the novelization goes into better detail. It's been YEARS, but if I remember correctly Dillon is a Army lieutenant colonel, and Dutch is an Army major. A LtCol outranks a major. And though it's never explicitly stated, I believe Dillon was still an active-duty LtCol who was an Army liason or attaché for the CIA. So, yes, this is Dutch's squad, but Dillon still outranks him in the field. Dillon even makes that clear when he tells Dutch, "You're still under orders, major." If you ever served and had someone say that that to you like that, they're being a dick, but also pulling rank. Essentially, that's Dillon did. That being said, there are some significant changes between the novelization and the film, but the logic still tracks.

Predator skins alive those he finds unworthy. Those worthy of sport, Predator collects their skulls 💀 💀 for trophies 🏆. -OG

OK when I also heard MarioB and Nicole at the part where the Predator grabs Dutch and holds him up against the tree trunk after Dutch lost his camouflage in the water scene... Kevin Peter Hall who played the Predator was 7'2 but with the Predator costume on it made him about 7'4 maybe 7'5 and yes Arnold is only about 6'2 so when you see the part of the Predator holding Arnold up against the tree trunk that is actually real... but also Kevin Peter Hall is slightly bending his knees just a little while holding Arnold there otherwise he'd tower over Arnold big time
