There are many anglers out there who swear by bait scents and sprays. Others will tell you those things are nothing but a waste of money. But the truth is bass have a remarkable sense of smell and can detect tiny amounts of scent from tens of yards away. So even if those store-bought bait scents are just gimmicks, is there a practical way to give your plastics a smell that will entice the bass? In this video, we'll go over why scent can be the biggest factor in getting huge bites when the bass fishing is toughest! #fishing #bassfishing #fishingtips

Do you have a favorite scent that you like to use? Do you feel like scents get you more bites?

I've never tried scents in my weekly search for big spotted bass, bet I will now. I'm all about "advantage fishing."

Super cold run off is tough. The sense of smell is a fascinating one. I have gone back and forth on how much I use scents a lot over the years and need to definitely do more experimenting with them. Wouldn’t want that bag to spill in your truck!

The biggest thing I am finding out is that nearly all plastic baits are receptive to scent. I can marinate the plastics in pretty much any scents and they'll pick the smell up and hold onto it really well.

Whoa , not sure if I could handle that concoction but you were the only person who caught anything . I have a few packs of Bass Pro worms that have a new 8 up scent and some stick worms soaking in Gulp juice . Catfish would love your recipe !!!

We used to call that a chum bag when I was younger. Works great for drawing fish in.

It was a nice day the last time I went to the lake and there were a lot of other guys out fishing. Having the water to myself was nice while it lasted.

I'm going to look around some more and see what other stuff people might use. So far, garlic seems to be the most popular. After going on a charter boat last summer I was shown how to properly fish with a wacky worm. I was the only one catching anything. At the same time, all the poles had braid to mono or fluoro line as well. I'm jonesing for the summer. In the meantime, I'm practicing my knots and getting my gear set up.

I see a lot of guys using garlic as well. I put it in the mix, but I don't know if it helped or not.

@@LowBrowFishing Okay, here we go.... So far, I've seen garlic, ginger, cumin, tuna oil, garlic butter, garlic salt, non-iodized salt, glycerin, peanut butter and of course chicken parts. I'm thinking I will try : Garlic, salt and ground up... worms in a blender with some water from a creek or pond. Soak it for a week or two before I go to the lake. Also, I'm thinking I will use heat shrink instead of the rings so I can install them ahead of time. I don't think I want to try to install rings in the boat after they get that slimy lol. Just watched a lady make fake gulp worms with a sprayed on scent. I don't think I'll go that far.

You're a braver man than I am. I've always used scents on my baits since I was a kid. Probably because I saw Bill Dance doing it. I feel like it's always helped though.

I always thought scents were a waste of money. But the more I work with them the more I'm changing my mind. Smell might not be everything, but there is definitely something to it.

Great video, I like the idea of using scents. Thats interesting they bit on the worms with scent. I definitely need to try some scents. Have you ever used any manufactured scents to put on the lure? What kind of braid do you use on your spinning reels?
@LowBrowFishing
@LowBrowFishing 5 месяцев назад
I've tried a few store bought ones over the years, but never used them consistently. I'm going to experiment more and see where it goes. And I just have 10lb braid on my spinner. I use various brands like Strike King or Spider Wire.

Interesting, next time I go fishing with my son I am going to test this. I’ll let him fish his normal soft plastics and I’ll fish ones that soaked in a scent for a while. Won’t tell him and I’ll fish behind him. Let’s see what happens.

@@LowBrowFishing Decided to use Menhaden oil because that is what I have. Started my soak, should get a good 7-8 day soak before we get out on the water. I’ll try to keep you posted in this comment section.

Stick baits had a good 2 week soak in Menhaden Oil. My son was fishing the front of the boat, I fished behind him. I caught 3 bass to every one he caught. I also caught several 3-4 pounders where his biggest was 2.2 pounds. I also noticed something else very interesting, more than half the bass I caught inhaled the stick bait to the point that I had to pull more then half of it out of their throat and most were hooked in the tongue instead of the mouth/lips. Son has no idea I soaked my baits in scent. Next time he can get a day or two off work I will try again just to make sure it was not a fluke.
