I Sold Broken Consoles - Or Did I?! I sold 2 consoles I had fixed but when the customers received them they said they didn't work. So I had the consoles shipped back to me so I could see what I did wrong - or if there is something else going on.

Leaving the clamp off is something I would fully expect the Geek Squad to do. However, my guess is someone tripped over the HDMI cable, screwing up the port. Customer knew they screwed up and went to Geek Squad to fix it, but since Geek Squad doesn't really know how to fix things, especially on a hardware level, they pointlessly took it apart, forgetting to reinstall the clamp and ruining the case while they were at it. Then when someone would say "It stopped working all of a sudden." I'd have pictures to compare with to see if they had opened it. So much so with certain people I'd even go as far to make sure to have some if not all philip screws in the same orientation an take pictures of that. That trick saved Me so many times from people claiming they never opened it or had it opened by someone else. But now you can just get some custom printed VOID stickers made, and put 2-3 on there.

People love to use weird HDMI brands and wiggle the connector when they can't do a straight pull to get the connector out. I too find it weird since HDMI is not a super grippy connector unless you do something really wrong with it like bending it out of shape. The old port looks to be bent towards the PCB which makes me think maybe they tried to plug USB instead and making it worse.

I have some repair experience with another 3DS, but should I try and repair it myself or should I take it to a repair shop?
@Tronicsfix

That's a tough repair. Look up the guide on iFixit and see if you think you can do it. Unfortunately, I don't know of any repair shops that offer that repair.

Try it yourself first. As I recall that is a very tricky repair when routing the cable, but patients and care will get it repaired. Steve has a video about that repair. I also don't trust most shops to do the job properly.

I have done it before and it is possible, but tricky and takes a lot of time

Dude that customer totally borked it and sent it back as "it didn't work.". I am in IT and see this WAAAAAY too often. I have also learned to log Serial Numbers and take photos of components to be able to tell if people mess with things. Has unfortunately come in handy in the past.

The buyer of the Xbox clearly did break the HDMI because it clearly worked long enough for him to login to his account, so something isn't adding up

You're a good guy Steve. It's obvious that first console was no fault of your own. It was definitely something that happened after the fact. Also wanted to add my name to those wishing you well during your health battle. You bring hours upon hours of entertainment to many of us who enjoy watching your videos and you have an entire army of viewers in addition to anyone you know in your personal life wishing you the best and pulling for you every step of the way. All the best to you.

That first Xbox has been tampered, you should not provide any free repairs, you are setting a bad precedent, by offering that gentlemans warranty, shows great sense of responsability on your part but it's a bad practice for your business, not only you have video from. That console with a clamp, you also censored the profile of the user once you turned it on, meaning it's been used and did work and displayed an image but got the port damaged by the user

You need to put warranty stickers on them in case someone else opens them and breaks them. It's obvious the customer did something and broke the HDMI and lost the clamp. I wouldn't be surprised if they took the parts for another Xbox and sent this one claiming it wasn't working.

no. this is "welcome to the nightmare of terrible people who try to take advantage of others i.e. trash worthless humans". clearly someone altered the repaired series X, whether that was replacing the board or damaging the port and tried to say "it came this way" -- no it didnt. we all watched him repair it and it worked.

Btw I should have started with I hope you make a full recovery and you will be in my thoughts and prayers. But funny story at least you got the same console back. I sold a ps2 slim and got back a cocaroach infested one (at least they were dead) (reselling is fun :) ) took a while but I won the dispute on that one@@Tronicsfix

Those shiny spots on the plastic reminds me of how stadiums 'refresh' their plastic seats from weathering. They take a blow torch to them to let the plastic slightly melt to make it look new.

You’re being real nice about that Xbox. In my opinion that HDMI look real good when you first finished it and of course you tested it. Seems like the buyer might have taken it apart and forgot to replace the clamp. You’re a good person.

It's always good to film any repair or refurbish to protect yourself and your business. The fact that the X Clamp was missing is evidence that the customer or another service opened the unit.

My Model X was overheating just like the white unit you have displayed in the video. I re-pasted the CPU and bought thermal pads, cutting each one to place on each module. I removed the thermal putty and replaced each with a pad. I also put a long pad down the surface mounted caps vs the re-using any putty. My Model X is now super quiet and doesn't ramp up even under heavy load. Going to take the same approach on my Gen 1 PS4 Pro since it's having the same issues.

Maybe adding your own warranty stickers could be a great idea. Also to mark what youve checked, like an ok mark over the hdmi would've let you know that you tested it (maybe both outside and inside to avoid scams) and lots of pictures on serial, stickers in packaging for future proofing like somebody else already said Oh, and godspeed on your recovery
