I sold EVERYTHING and moved to Chiang Mai, Thailand! (My Story)

I'm Michael, a digital entrepreneur turned nomad. During COVID both my wife and I both quit our jobs and started our own online businesses. Mine in e-commerce, and my wife's in online fitness and travel. It was a dream come true, living in San Diego and free from corporate 9-5's (more like, 6-10's). Last month we took an even bigger leap, to sell everything we own and move to Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand. It was a difficult but worthwhile decision that took almost 10 years to make. Hopefully my first official RU-vid video speaks to you in some way, and I hope to see you traveling the world someday too if you aren't already out there!

I’m 52 …. Thinking of making the BIG jump myself next year. It’s either stay in the 🇺🇸 (SoCal) and work till I die to “get by” or move overseas and retire in my 50s. Lots of anxiety with all the “stuff” to get rid or and selling the house and all 😬
@nofearnomad
@nofearnomad Месяц назад
Oh man I just went through all of that. You can start a side hustle or business and keep bringing in income one way or another while you're out here too! You'll be surprised with what you can do with even a fraction of California income too. But yes, that anxiety is a big hurdle. I realized a method, when I was deciding what to keep or what to donate/store. If you look at something you own, and hesitate on making a decision, just get rid of it. If you really need it you'd know. It helped SO much when we were trying to figure it all out, and realized when we got here that we STILL overpacked and so much stuff won't be put to use. But I guarantee you when you finally make the decision, you're not going to regret it for a second. Bringing novelty back into your life is an incredible thing.

@DiogenesTheFrog yeah I can imagine that's pretty rough. You could just come out initially for 4-6 weeks, and towards the end of it touch base and see how you're feeling then? Having a lot of unknowns is harder to figure out but that baby step could affirm your decision either way (we did this in October)

I’ve been to Thailand about 10 times. 7 times to Chiangmai. Haven’t made the big move yet. The only things that make me hesitate is the tourist crowds and the feb/April smokey season
@nofearnomad
@nofearnomad 10 дней назад
Definitely valid points. Chiang Mai is ideal for living 8 months out of the year (smoke didn't go away until the rain started to fall as late as end of May). This coming year we will definitely be exploring different places to alternate between, I hear De Nang is getting quite popular with the CM folks

I was in Chiangmai the year Covid started. My family and I were in Thailand in December, spending Christmas break. We got home, and a week after New Year, Covid attacked. I do not know when I will be back in Chiangmai, or perhaps will never be, but I admire Chiangmai so much. Especially the highest mountain in Thailand, I was there. I loved every bit of experience I had in Chiangmai.

@@nofearnomad Udon Thani actually reminds me of the small town in Louisiana where my grandparents lived. It has everything that I need. Though there a small Red Light District it is mostly a working town where people get up early and go to bed early. Also Udon Thani is growing, there is many construction project going on everywhere. It is a industrial hub in the Northeast. I just like the sense of community and I have made a lot of friends over the years that I have been visiting. It is a perfect fit for me.

Hey man, best of luck to you. Living my dream! I am on the exact same mission. I am also half thai and would love to know how you are finding acquiring thai citizenship? I’m trying as we speak. But I am told I have to serve in the army for 2 years (I am 26), which isn’t a problem but I would love to know how you are going about it? I relate to you quite a bit just off what you were talking about in this video. Glad to have found you. Subscribed and interested in your journey 🙏
@nofearnomad
@nofearnomad 29 дней назад
Hey!! Yes... I heard that was a possibility. I just turned 30, which means that's no longer a thing. But at 26, from what I'm reading, I think there's a chance you'd have to enlist. Just check the legitimate exemptions to see if you have the ability to skip enlisting, or not. I'm in a peculiar situation where paperwork was never filed when I was born, nor does my immediate family have currently valid papers as they emigrated a long time ago. So it's a journey! But thanks so much for your kind words!!

Best of luck man, I’ve been toying with the idea since 2 years now but I still haven’t mustered up the courage to make the move. I did visit a few times and loved it, I’d probably head south though due to the air quality issues up north in burning season If Chiang Mai didn’t suffer from the air quality problems, in my view it would be the best place for me to be in Chiang Mai

how does one get started in e-commerce?
@nofearnomad
@nofearnomad 2 месяца назад
I would say, instead of simply dropshipping trendy products, find some niche that you actually care about. Look at your hobbies or passions and think of gaps you can fill, because you understand the audience and know what you would want to buy personally. Pain points being addressed, etc. once you figure the niche and come up with product ideas, there's a lot of ways to get these products designed or sources and plugged in to your marketing model and platform. I like to start with a unique product idea first, the logistics and media buying skills come over time, no get rich quick strategy or anything like that. Lots of people try and pick trending products and run ads but you're not adding value because 100 other people are doing the exact same thing. So I hope that answers your question as to where to start, what comes after takes some education or finding the right trustworthy mentor (not a course) you can pay for to guide you on how to bring your idea to market. It's really rewarding and helped me quit my job very quickly.
