The Second Doctor’s companion Jamie McCrimmon was the first person to use the pseudonym “John Smith” for the Doctor in the Season 5 finale The Wheel in Space (1968). The Doctor also had a college nickname, Theta Sigma (The Armageddon Factor & The Happiness Patrol).

I like the theory that the Doctor's name is the theme tune. His wife was called Melody and then Song (maybe there was a connection between the 2 through the music). The last place he met River was at the singing towers of Darillium. Capaldi played the theme on his guitar in The Magician's Apprentice as he was entering the arena. In The Devil's Chord, Maestro is summoned through music and then proceeds to play the theme twice throughout the episode also hints at the Doctor's past by saying wibbly wobbly. I personally believe that The Doctor's name is a piece of music and everyone on Gallifrey has a nickname that they are just commonly referred to (The Rani, The Master, The Doctor, Rassilon).

Maybe the Doctor's name is pronounced musically, but isn't their theme tune? Maybe it's some harmony of all of the Doctors' themes? Because their themes feel more like the Doctor than the main theme tune, which is about all of the characters. Though, I'm not sure how these themes would harmonize.

the Doctor's name being the theme is something i like. It's something i thought of during Clara's last episode. Though others theorised it first. But if timelord books can be smells. Maybe a name can be a piece of music. When The Doctor forgot Clara, he remembered her theme tune. And that helped him remember her name in english. Maybe Clara's theme was her name in gallifreyan.

My headcanon for the “Dr Who” as name references are that that was a nickname he tried out on Gallifrey and decided he didn’t like so quite quickly changed to using “The Doctor” but Missy remembers.

But this doesnt really help cos its not in any earthly language so his actual name is still unknown, we just know how to spell it (in a random ahh language). Im still with the theory that its pronounced as the Doctor Who Opening theme. Edit: the classic story was the 5 doctors where d³∑x₂ is present on Rassilons Tomb.

The Doctor's name? That's easy. He doesn't have one and will never have one. If someday someone reveals it, another writer will just say "it was a prank, bro". SPOILER FOR THE CLASSIC SERIES. Like what happened to Theta Sigma. With the Fourth Doctor, Drax even called him Theet, indication that Theta Sigma was his name and Theet his nickname, but with the 7th Doctor they retconned to make Theta Sigma his nickname and Theet the nickname for his nickname, I guess? That sounds even more stupid when you think about it.

They don't have an actual answer, this is used to keep the mystery and create hype for episodes like "The name of the Doctor", but the truth is, whatever the writer for today says it's his name, the one from tomorrow can just retcon it and say that was a lie all along. And that doesn't even aply just for his name, but a whole lot of stuff.

Theta Sigma isn't a name. Those are Greek letters. Which means it's at best a TARDIS translation of phonetically similar initials, or a symbol that just happens to look close enough to this: ΘΣ. So in terms of pronouncing his name, if we were to assume that those *are* his phonetic initials, the most we can glean from that is that his first name starts with an unvoiced "Th" and his second name starts with an "S" sound. In other words, his name based on the clue "Theta Sigma" could hypothetically be Theodore Stevens, or Thaddeus Swag, or Thimble Spoon, or Thumb Sucker, or Theatrical Cinema, or Thursday Sevenoclock, or Thieving Sonofabitch, or Thing Something, or Thermostat Stethoscope, or Thorn Section... or Thoogleflarm Snurp or some other random space nonsense. And the name in the comic book could just be read as a similarly unhelpful translation of either the full name or the same initials. But end of the day, it's Doctor Who and there is no canon.

@@Swenglish all names are letters at the end of the day. Elon Musk son is called X Æ A-Xii and that's still a viable name. It doesn't make sense that Drax would create a nickname for his initials. I do definetely have to agree with the fact that Doctor Who doesn't really have a canon so in the end of the day, anything goes.

@@mareiramv You're missing my point. Gallifrey wouldn't literally have Greek letters, because the Greek Alphabet is from Earth (where Greece is). That's obviously a quirk of translation. Same goes for Omega. It doesn't make sense that these would be their names in the original language, because the original language isn't Greek or any other language that would use Greek letters for anything (such as English). Greek letters are obviously being used as some kind of shorthand or approximation of what it would be in the original language, presumably because the original language is incomprehensible to humans. There are various contexts in which Greek letters are used in English, so it makes some sense that the TARDIS translation circuit would adopt that behavior as part of English.

Actually the equation originates from the original The Making of Doctor Who book by Terrance Dicks (the one with Jon Pertwee and a Sea Devil on it), and is taken from the records of the Time Lords detailing his adventures, trial, and his exile to Earth.

The idea of the Doctor's name being Basil (he doesn't even add the Disco part in that scene) has always felt so unique and personal that I haven't been entirely sure to this day if he was actually joking. Especially with Osgood giving her genuine first name (as far as we know). It just felt like one of those quiet moments where you're with someone you trust and you're like, "Oh what the hell, here you go."

Basil with a brother called Irvin Braxiatel - so, IF the Doctor has ever been a little girl, being raised on earth (maybe) the name might have been turned around as Lisa Braxiatel ... keeping only your personal name, turn it around 180 degrees to fit the changed condition from girl to boy, he just kept the first letter of the familyname to remind himself of his lost past: B.asiL, might also mean "Be Asyl", the Time Lords giving sanctuary to a lost child from any other dimension imaginable... During the Armageddon Factor the Doctor met up with an old school chum named Drax. Drax called him Thete short for Theta Sigma. Insisting he call him that, the Doctor corrected him 3 times to calling him the Doctor. It wasn't brought up again by Drax once the Doctor looked like he was going to beat it into him.

Missy did say that the Doctor's real name is Doctor Who. This is a reference to the fact that in the classic era of the series the character was actually credited as "Dr. Who" It wasn't till much later that they changed it to "The Doctor" in the show's credits. And Missy even mentioned that he later dropped the Who and she specifically mentioned the exact time period that the name did change in the show's credits. But I still don't think it's actually his original name because Missy is a liar and the Doctor literally says that he chose that name for himself. But it doesn't matter what his original name is because the name he chose is his real name.

(2016 - after hosting the Shakespeare event) - born as McDonald he choose his stage name aged 16 and HAD to make it his REAL name for the US-market, just to be allowed to stay, who he had been all his working life. My social security number is NOT my real name, but it stays the same, regardless how often I might change the surname through marriage or other "events" in my life. Where I live, Doctor is part of your name, as soon as you rightfully achieved this title. David Tennant insisted on being listed as "the Doctor" in the credits, while the 9th, Christopher Ecclestone, is still rolling with "Doctor Who" (like 1st, 2nd, 3rd part of 4th & 9th) ... remember Missy introducing herself: "Hello, I am Doctor Who...", 12th rushes out of the TARDIS: "I am (the REAL) Doctor Who!"

Apparently an old extended universe comic "Lungbarrow" has his name as Christodavoreen something or other...my HC is Theta Sigma is somehow a nickname in some Gallifreyan dialect or creole or slang; Christopher is also a way to translate it as the closest English equivalent. I have always insisted that Chrístõdavõreendiamondhærtmallõupdracœfiredelúnmiancuimhne de Lœngbærrowis his "birth" name and nothing will ever change that. But that it ultimately it doesn't matter. He left that name behind and became The Doctor. That's the only name that matters. He is THE DOCTOR. Trying to use his "birth" name is equivilent to Dead Naming and Ive been told that's bad.

The Doctor is a title, Galifrey uses titles for names. The Doctor's true name was a mathematical formula: ∂³Σx² or d32x2, which should be pronounce "Delta Cubed Sigma X Squared" in english. Theta Sigma (The Doctor's academy nickname) and the last five being pronounced (assuming i translated correctly Phi Tau Gamma Delta Zeta. The comic is a colourized U.S. reprint of the early black and white Doctor Who Weekly comic strips. The Doctor's "name" that they quote is from the Time Lords' indictment of charges against the Doctor from the 1972 edition of The Making of Doctor Who by Terrance Dicks and Malcolm Hulke. These symbols also appear on the pillar with "Old High Gallifreyan" inscriptions inside Rassilon's tomb in The Five Doctors.

I was convinced for a while (until 12 gave his departure monologue) that the Doctor's real name could definitely have been Lucifer. For one, his name is a secret. Why would his name be a secret unless it would completely change all of his relationships? For another, the Doctor seems genuinely concerned in front of human companions when his name is threatened to be revealed. If they wouldn't understand it anyway, then why would he be worried? It's something that can be read, since Clara read it in a book. And it's pronounceable, since River Song said it to 10. The only name I can think of that checks all of those boxes is a name like Lucifer. It;s pronounceable, readable, and it makes sense why this name would be understood by human companions and why its revelation would probably change his relationships with his human companions. But then 12 had to go all "You can't pronounce it" and now it's even more of a mystery.

Seriously though that was later proven to be a name he went by in College and not his actual name, if i remember correctly. He even says it in new who ' I go by many names but never the real one . My name spoken aloud willl end the universe. ' or something like that. Allegedly a companion read a book with his name in it in TARDIS library and then promptly forgot it. River allegedly whispers it to his TARDIS grave but we dont know what she actually whispers. He claims she alone knows his name but he acknowledged that he lies and his name can never be spoken. Its a mystery to be sure.

(You migt already know this but…) Fun Fact: In the credits of classic who, the Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who”, but that was fixed in the 7th Doctor era (I think), but when the show was revived, the 9th Doctor was credited as “Doctor Who” again 😂

The morse code in the theme spelled ‘MORSE’. It would have been a cool Easter egg if it had spelt ‘ENDEAVOUR’. I did love how when people asked his first name he’d often say “Inspector”.

Many years ago I read an interview with Tom Baker from the late 70s where he says the Doctor's full name is Unjulakatulavistulahithithazitze but when he tells it to people they reply with "Doctor who?" and he eventually decided "oh, never mind, that'll do". Possibly he was not being serious. Personally I suspect "d³∑x₂" is pronounced Throat Wobbler Mangrove.

I was given a copy of that very same comic a few yeats ago. Once I saw it in the background I went to go pull it out. I pullled out the taped together cardboard I got it in that I've been keeping it in, but when I looked inside it wasn't there. My heart is broken. I have no idea where it could be. His name is Pete, or Pete of Sigma. ... at least that's how I heard it on a grainy TV signal back in the 80s, watching "The Armageddon Factor" (where he was actually called "Thete" or "Theta Sigma"). But I hold that the Doctor's name is "Pete". On a planet of Borusas and Romanas and Rassilons, what could be worse than going through life as "Pete"? No wonder he calls himself The Doctor. Additionally, according to one of the novels, he belongs to the House of Lungbarrow, which would make his full name "Pete Lungbarrow".

There's only one time he would share his name, there's only one time he could. That would be when with another time lord or the equivalent of. When saying that to River Song that means she would have to be a Time Lord. At that time as far as he knew the Time Lords were dead. The Doctor did tell his name to others like The matrix in order to break out. But even the matrix couldn't handle all the information coming from the Doctor. All time lord names are aliases, the master? , you chose it. Time Lord names are who they are, their essence, but they share with others their regeneration energies. So the song theory is pretty close. The formula may be closer. Healing of River Song''s hand was really being too intimate. So she slapped him. I don't know, maybe she wasn't in the mood. Time Lorrds are told their name when looking into the untempered schism. Some go on to greatness, some like the master go mad, didn't want to know who he was supposed to be couldn't handle being a loser, and some like the Doctor RUN, didn't like others telling him who he was supposed to be, after regenerating sometimes he forgets who is until he remembers. The name the doctor remembers is not the doctor, but doctor is what he chose to say. IT'S VERY PAINFUL TO FIND OUT WHO YOU ARE. Since the doctor ran he doesn't really know completely. DOCTOR WHO? The Tme Lords language is untranslatable except translatable through them. Even the tardis is not a TARDIS, but if someone says it's real name that is translated into TARDIS that comes from English anyway. Why would time awards use the English language to name their time machines?
