Right now it is STRESSFUL trying new events and feeling like they're a flop. It definitely is never a good feeling, but I also really appreciate you making blogs to share your full experience. I feel like many vendors only focus on good shows and never bring up how slower ones happen as well. It truly shows what it's like as an artist trying to sell work. Thank you for sharing your experience, and I hope you get a much needed break to recover!

Thank you so much! Looking forward to getting more rest for the next month :) I think people are focusing more on work and school lately which is why there's been a decline and I'm hoping it picks up later during the holidays

Honestly, I don't think it's your display or merch. It think that the events aren't really the crowd that is going for your merch. This event in particular, I know that I would be there for food, and really not be interested in shopping around. Especially with the recession still being so bad, I think people are pretty set on what they plan on buying at events. I just don't think they're your demographic, and that's okay :C

I'm starting to see that as well 🥲 I definitely got ahead of myself when signing up for 626 since it was an event I've been wanting to vend at for a long time, and FoodieLand was another one I've been meaning to try. I'm sure many attendees weren't even aware that there were merch booths prior to going to a food event. I'm hoping it gets better during the holidays

I would NOT be vending along side food events right now, prices are so high right now and I would not want to be competing with food vendors

I definately feel you there on the other side of the world ( UK ). I've done about 20+ events and I'd say majority of them have been incredibly disappointing. When you get a string of disappointing events it can be a real damper on motivation for making new art and doing more events. But I think like you said on your video it gives a strong gauge of who your actual target audience are, just sticking with the usual conventions you never know whether or not you can expand outside of that circle. I think its great that you are documenting this, its easy to always show the rainbows and sunshines of being an artist but the reality is that there's a lot of times where things don't go our way and I think its incredibly refreshing and brave for you to put down your thoughts in a honest and straightforward manner.

I agree as I have been the only handmade at some and so everyone came purposely for DS booths but not expecting or wanting handmade. Very discouraging. For an event called Foodie I would assume they come for food and not my handmade.

It’s really inspiring all that you do by yourself. Will you have artist studio vlogs? Maybe unboxing and packing. Maybe it’s just me but that whole process is interesting to me. I sew home goods and sell online so not at all in your lane but I admire your entrepreneurial spirit❤

Hi! Hope you are doing well, it might not be my place, but it seems like you are more burned out that you think, so please consider really taking some break and rest. Wish you the best and sending good energies you way, I know art markets can be super exhaustive and you do a lot of them. Take care!

When I look back at the footage, I definitely see the burnout especially when comparing to my vlogs from previous events 😅 I appreciate you looking out!

there were so many events going on that weekend. adams ave street fair, miramar airshow, pifa (pacific islander festival), foodieland, and i think there was maybe another one i think. but there was so much going on. i dont think that weekend was the best in general. i think its great that youre taking some time off. take care of yourself first and always. have a good break! =)

I think personally believe your products are fine but maybe timing hasn't worked out as great and which events you've signed up for. Anime conventions are probably where you would excel the most As well as during times when both students from college / highschool are all out of classes. --> Spring / Winter / Summer Breaks --> Summer probably the very first weekend of 626 is probably most optimal when people aren't either burnt out of nigh markets and returning to school schedules and they're looking forward to seeing what's new this year around. As a consumer when going to night markets I generally have a 80 / 20 budget for food and artist alley. --> When I buy things from the artist alley my go to purchases are - Enamel Pins - Charms - Stickers are last on my list but always great to grab whenever I don't have anymore money for pins or charms While I do enjoy seeing bags I typically don't have that money on me at that moment but do pique my interest in ordering them online. Maybe you could have like a survey thing people could fill out and get rid of low stock sticker / excess that you don't think would profit any longer. I really do hope you get lots of rest after this and that you're not putting too much of the blame on your wonderful products and yourself on sales not doing so well.

Thank you so much for your detailed input! I've been speaking with other vendor friends and we've noticed the same pattern. While I have been applying to as many cons as I can, anime cons have been incredibly competitive lately which is why many artists have been venturing into night markets, but even then it's been getting saturated with resellers 🥲

Are these food events even worth it for any non-food vendors? The fee seems way too high (especially the night markets), the attendance numbers are weather dependent and being outside for long hours while being blasted with loud music seems exhausting. I hope you get a lot of rest on your break.

The prices have been increasing exponentially lately. I remember when 626 used to charge around $500-600 for a booth space in either OC or Pleasanton and it came with a canopy rental. It's getting more difficult for smaller business and artists to enter the space when they can't afford to shell out the fees half a year in advance. While night markets used to have much more artists/crafters, there seems to be a rise in resellers (i.e. funko pops, croc charms, etc) at these type of events so I can see how it's starting to not be worth it for most artists at this point.

@@Mualcaina Yes, I agree! Most night markets, especially in San Diego 2023, are now $750 - $1500 and it's more common to find resellers than original or independent artists.
