It's taken me about 8 months from the time I've seen your first video but I've done it. I was a Silver 2 player with OW2 as my first ever competitive pc game - I am now a GM2 Bap/Soldier main. Your straightforwardness and expertise has not only helped me improve physically, but also mentally. One thing in particular you've said that helped me immensely is, "if you're scared to derank, then you don't belong in your current rank". Completely changed my outlook on the game.
"I follow awkward's advice but I still lose" I will say, I'm still not amazing because I still ultimately have to use my own judgement during games, but the closer I am to playing how I think awkward would play, the better I am at the game. I don't think the issues come from awkward's advice, it comes from our own ability to follow it
So true. It's very difficult to change your playstyle instantly, especially if you've been playing for a very long time (for me it's 5 years of playing OW without much dedication). I had to remind myself almost every game, "Remember the tips and lessons, remember, stop hiding, dmg dmg dmg." Sometimes I forgot and continued to play the old way just out of deep habit. But with each game, you need to remind yourself less and less, and you begin to get used to a new style. And for me, seeing the results and my own growth is the most satisfying feeling
I love this format. Not going through the entire VOD, just noticing how people were doing wrong fundamentally, proving that happened many times on the same match and giving the proper advice. Clean and simple. Great video.
The top 10 bap review was amazing as a masters bap main. It was interesting to see how while he has way better mechanics than me (better aim, high value lamps etc) he still made 1 mistake that's very similar to mine: letting the fate of the game be decided by your teammates instead of yourself. I'm often afraid to die first or even peek when i'm against a widow, so it's easy to fall in the trap of playing save around the corner healbotting. But this way we cannot decide the fate of the match by ourselves. We need to take more risks if we want greater influence over our games.
dw I’m GM1/T500 and i still make that mistake. I tend to win more games when my dmg and healing are 50/50 than say 20/80 depending on the game. A mistake a lot of newer players make in GM is respecting the enemies too much and allowing them to occupy valuable angles.
You should see me playing, then you'll be glad you're playing like that. I know that is a game and i can die only in the game, but i am an frontliner on every caracter Zen, Sigma, bastion i play agressive on anny caracter posible. It is not allways rewarding and i am allmost allways with most deaths on the board but i like that play style so, as i allways say, you do you and i do me, play as you like, i'll do as i like. Key factor is to enjoy the game, at the end w or L did you enjoyed the time spend ?
While Awkward was spectating the Top 10 Bap and complementing the kiriko for doing great same as off angle or push forward when someone die, the kiriko was SirMajed, when two top 1 Supports agree on something you probably should do, enjoyed the great and helpful video
21:56 I laughed so hard at the stare, so many hilarious moments along side the great helpful insights! I love Ana and Moira and Awkward has given me such a new amazing prespective on both of them! I have loads of fun playing with them but even more now after watching his videos!
I'm the anubis(i made this name when i was 6 bro) the last person that played ball on gold, since that review i win a lot more frequently, it's not much but i never been in a 6 streak win, and that happen, thx awkward
This is helpful, thanks for this. I like seeing Awkward review other players because I feel I learn more from watching gameplay be corrected, since most of us make a lot of the same mistakes to some degree or another.
Unironically, I don't have the intelligence to notice these stupid mistakes in my own gameplay too, this is why I can't improve. This is why 99% blames their team. It's not that they're losers, they just can't see their mistakes for some reason.
Classic external locus of control: People with an external locus of control tend to attribute their lack of knowledge or mistakes to external factors, such as blaming others or external circumstances, rather than taking responsibility for their own understanding or actions. This behavior can be a defense mechanism to protect one's self-esteem by avoiding acknowledging personal shortcomings.
Honestly, I know boosting is bad, but the main way I improved was playing in a duo with a smurf and being carried to a higher rank. The higher i got, the faster i got punished for my mistakes, and that instant punishment is literally like someone telling you "don't do that again, that was a mistake" and you don't get that if you're playing in silver and can get away with stupid plays
By the way: Avoiding acknowledging personal shortcomings in order to protect one's self-esteem can be a taught thing (parents, environment, etc.) but it's our responsibility to overcome. Sometimes it is a hard learning experience/hard work, sometimes it just needs a change in environment. I don't think I'm wrong if I say that Awkwards community is a place where you don't get offended if you take responsibility for your shortcomings. Instead you'll get encouraged to do so.
let me get in one of these im plat i play kiriko and bap and only use your teachings i had one game on bap with 13,000 damage and 8k healing and my team was crying all game and we still won because i did damage but i still lose games and i wanna know what im doing wrong because i genuinely believe i follow your teachings and im stuck in plat on tank dps and heals
I myself am proof that Awkward's advice does work as I was Plat when I enrolled in RUA and managed to climb to GM in the 2 roles I play after 3 seasons. The advice itself isn't the issue with some of these players but rather their own interpretation and execution of said advice. Acknowledging the core issue that he points out and then UNDERSTANDING the solution he provides is how you improve and climb.
I played ranked from time to time, after watching Awkward's U2GM video I went from silver 5 to plat 1. I don't play a lot of ranked because they demand so much time, I mostly just do quickplay. I can consistently out-damage everybody in the lobby. Because this aggressive/off-angle playstyle, I get a lot of friend requests in QP asking what my `real` rank is. I love your zen-related videos, they are god-tier.
Crazy seeing the top 10 bap make the exact same mistakes as a gm ana, as a gold kiriko, and as a console master moira. Damage damage damage off angling
I love this video! It's interesting to see how you can judge someone by only a few seconds of gameplay. Things that helped me: Trying to be more chill and taking more time with shots (I'm tense very fast, not only from playing but everything that happens fast, it's like an automatic response from my body - I'm autistic, that's probably why lol) and a lot of work on my positioning. And as a support: I'm not trying to help my mates that are way out of position and will die (and me likely too afterwards because I would need to get out of a good position for them), same as doing more dmg and sometimes letting a mate die, that I couldn't have kept alive anyway and switching to damage, to secure atleast 1 or 2 kills. I keep remembering that I don't need to keep everyone at full health all the time. They just need enough HP to win the fight (and there's also another support in my team!). I switched away from Mercy in lower ranks too. Too dependend on her team (and most ppl can't hit shots so there's not much value in dmg boost anyway), so I play mostly Ana, Bap, Kiri. Getting to plat/dia will work with Moira only too, because they can't handle the orbs lol. Also believing you can actually lead the team to a win and starting to do stuff instead of hoping the team will do it for you while you sit back. What I think that also helps a lot: Playing around with dpi and sens. I put my sens from 4.5 to 4 yesterday (1k dpi) because I felt like I'm to erratic in my movements especially in 1v1 or close range (from getting tense) and now I'm hitting way more consistently even tho it's only slightly different and I walked out of the first qp game (not trying out new sens in comp right away) with 7.4k dmg and 12.4k healing; 21-4 as Kiriko.
People don't realize that off angling at the very least creates a distraction which in itself is VALUE. Even if you don't get a pick you're getting the enemy attention. That's probably the greatest advice that I've learned from not only Awkward but every top 500 player that gives advice. If you're not at least attempting to off angle and do damage you might as well uninstall the game and play something else.
@@level99pika59 off angling and flanking are very different things. It doesn't take rocket science to shoot from a different angle than your team to pinch the enemy. Literally that's what Awkward and most other top level players preach over and over and over. And they do it because it works.
@@rosssivertson6339 last night I kept a widow and their supports so busy in the back line that they got 0 value. I was playing Lucio and just being a rat. Sure I gave my team no heals or speed but they now had the advantage of a 3v2 and the enemy having practically no heals.
My favoured awkward video ever. For me sometimes the videos are aggressive, don’t get me wrong I like it, but I just thought this had a very goofy vibe to it but still informative and straight to the point. This shit is hilarious
i love the no BS blunt teaching. i have taken up some of Awkwards teachings. and im an matter of just like a month. I moved out of Bronze upto Silver 2(for now), and get matched in Gold lobbies and still win pretty much everytime. ive only lost 1 match in a Gold lobby. Ill be Gold soon and will keep on moving up. just listen and follow what he says and youll do fine. I can even hard carry sometimes, with Zen no less.
I don't make many of these mistakes, but I'm definitely guilty of some of these. So this video is incredibly beneficial for those of us who are trying to follow your coaching, but are making mistakes without realising it. Fantastic video Awkward, very valuable. Thanks!
As a Kiriko main, I can tell : you're the only one who helped me get out of bronze 5. I was stuck, even when * thinking * I was doing the four step plan (I actually wasn't because I was scared of the ennemies). But when I actually started to wonder why I wasn't ranking up, tried the four step plan again, and did more damage, I *immediately* ranked up. Seriously, since then, I can win 1v3 sometimes 1v4 which I would have never done before, or with pure luck (and I would die after 1v2), I can get some sneaky kills, pressure the backlines etc. Thank you so much Awkward
Awkward i just wanna say, youre right man, just do damage me and my friends were playing ow together and we didn't heal as much we just did damage and we rolled every lobby using your tips it was hilarious i was like , awkward would be so proud 😂 thx for the vids man ur the best❤
I followed your advice on Echo and Kiriko unranked2gm and honestly it's been like a whole new game to me. I was playing casually without really trying to improve (yet tilting and getting mad at teammates ofc) for a long time on and off since ow1. But after I started applying your advice, games became EASY. First of all my win ratio went up drastically, 70%+ on Echo and ~55% on Kiriko (not as high as I'd like but still), but also I stopped caring how my teammates play, I just have fun, do as much as I can and look back at my plays to figure out my mistakes.
BANGERRRRR, bro ots crazy how much vod reviews cam do for a player, but like when its a really good player its even better cuz it just makes the decisions so simple
It's almost as if they think they can just autopilot and passively incorporate your advice, rather than lucidly deliberating on how to practice and actually incorporate your advice into their games through hours of practice.
i had a game the other day where my ana got mad at me (kiri) for "being too far forward the whole game" even though we won and I had the least deaths in the lobby i wonder how many more times she would've died if the enemy team wasn't worried about a kiri constantly in their faces
I LOVE your videos, man, I watch them a lot, even though I don't play OW anymore, haha. Also... you sound WAY better when you get closer to the mic... like you teach about your enemies, haha. @10:09.
Gold in OW2 is literally Bronze in OW1. That's how bad the players in OW2 are. It's wild. You don't even have to try to get to high diamond in OW2. In OW1 you almost started sweating in Plat games. WTH happened? How did Blizzard mess the ranking system up this badly? The people in the metal ranks in OW2 are total garbage now. At least in OW1 some players in Diamond and Plat were respectful
I like playing Kiriko with the 4 step plan. I just started but it got my 30% win rate to 50%. I still need to get better at 2 things, aiming and judging when things are getting bad. Aim isn't as important but is definitely nice to have when I get better. The problem I have is everytime I die (with a few exceptions where I got unlucky with my disengage) I didn't judge when to disengage correctly and I died because of it. Seriously I just finished a game where I was silver 5, and there were diamond players on the enemy team. I still won because I kept following the 4 step plan.
You know since watching your vids ive climbed from gold 3 to diamond 5 and ive gotta say the best part of the advice ive taken is off angleing and trying to make plays. Sometimes i die yes (and thats something i try to work on cuz usuwlly its from not disengaging soon enough or just missing shots) but when it does work it helps the team out immensly and gets good value. I hate the no risk taking gameplay style alot of people take in this game. Like why be scared? Its a video game lol
Well he is trying to be entertaining while still helping. While he does poke fun he is giving good advice which makes for good content. Like you said you learned and laughed alot.
My problem is i push advantage but my team doesn't and i find myself overextended by myself and not particularly in cover because im pushing an agreesive advantage. Yet in low ranks my sups afk or tank sits payload so i end up front lined to stager two and lose a 1v2 looking stupid.
I’m a wrestling coach and I feel spiritually like awkward. “Why do you think enemies are dying when you’re echo at close range but when you shoot from far you do bad”
Gotta love when your being dove out and you see your moria throw a dmg orb and right click only while you die and then they fade away cause the dmg needed is dead. Ill be junk rat and they let me die right before my one shot combo. Dmg is good. But just throw heal orb then DPS so we BOTH live and get a big advantage
You mention that you dont like crouch spamming, but theres reason to do it as baptiste imo, because you will be ready to use exo boots more frequently. (Source: top 65 peak top 200 season end bap)
Example: knowing enemy rein has shatter so you need to be ready to jump as soon as he uses it. If you arent crouch spamming you might take a lot longer to charge the boots
I am new to ow2 but, i do one thing good and is learning from others. I have pretty good aim for my current rank, i lack in game knowledge but his advices are golden. In my first video that i watched of him i found him pretty annoying but the more i played the game, the more it made sense. But i have to add one thing to what he's trying to give to you, his knowledge; don't do all of it at once, improve steadly, i am in no means in a spot to be compared but i also tryed to apply every advice, but it is allot of information to be proccesed at once, improve bit by bit and you'll see resoults and that is comming from someone who moved 2 ranks in solo que only by aplying match by match something new to my game sense and knowledge.
I’m a masters Kirk/Ana. I try the 4 step plan and even if I make space and get the enemies to look at me or even get a kill it’s great. The second I almost die or die I get scared and stop doing it and healbot for a bit. Need to get better at that
basically all players under diamond dont know how to capitalize on a pick or know when they are at an advantage. the worst is when your team is clearly at an advantage and the team is still somehow sitting back lol
@@natalie-u6n or they complain when the tank goes ahead to deal with the back line. I am with ramattra against 4 of them and my team wants to sit back and try to kill a pocketed orisa
I have 2 problems: while playing support with kiriko: 1) as soon as I try getting the off angle my team dies 2) how should I deal with people that just give up the game? Once the tank started throwing because he said "they're all smurfs don't even try". Another time the tank wanted us to healbot him, we did, he died and he blamed the "no heals"... What should I do?
i went from plat 5 to gm1 watching awkward’s u2gm. His principles of using cover, doing meaningful damage, off-angling, keeping your team alive, etc helped me a lot. But,I do agree that smurfing ruins lobbies. Unfortunately ow2 players love watching u2gms because they will blame the rank they are in and scapegoat their teammates as an excuse to why they can’t rank up. They believe that if their teammates were better, they would be in GM. Unfortunately, their aim, cover usage, ult usage, etc are often the problem. I do agree that counters exist in the highest level of teamplay, but awkward is right when he says the hero pick is not the problem especially in masters and below. When you constantly stress about the meta and swap heroes, you will never climb from just counterpicking.
1:09:00 It looks like the Ball stopped shooting the Kiriko because of trigger discipline. I'm not saying I agree with the Balls decision but it looks like they stop shooting when their crosshair isn't on the enemy. Since the Kiriko is about to escape & Ball can reload in ball form, I say he should have kept shooting anyways. So they stopped shooting cause their aim is bad. IMO. Probably a decent habit that worked/works well in most other scenarios & with other heroes.
My support ana is ranked in plat 4 yesterday but I swear I should have ranked silver. I die all the time, healing is low damage is like in the 4 to 5k range
I climbed plat 3 I was expecting to derank... Wth. I play terrible, but still managed to make 14k damage 15k heal on kings row, but ennemies weren't playing great
@@os3688 yeah that is basically what I am trying to focus on. So managing to sleep the enemy tank and constantly having 1 to 2 ennemy purple would be enough to keep me in plat even thought my support healing sense is not great and I have difficulty to find damage on ennemy squishies in your opinion? Even if I die like 8-10 times per game? In a game I checked i had hit like 8 sleep with 68% accuracy and I had like 4 or 5 nade kills(shown in stats)
