With all the stuff we need to do as game developers, It's hard to keep up with everything at once. So, sometimes You really should allow yourself to take a step back and look for some help to get the results you need. A place like Fiverr can be a wonderful start for finding people to work with!

for 25 dollars I think the 3dmodeler could've auto-remeshed the skull, or just get any other free CC0 skull 3dmodel (10 times lower in polycount) and put it on the scythe. And what funny is: You: Explaining how you want your character to look "something a little bit like this but somewhat more dark to fit in with the other designes". 3dModeler: Oh so you wanna exact character from the picture? Got it! xDD

yeah the output by no means is perfect, especially for the character being an exact replica! and I do think that simply decimating the skull should have been quite easy to improve the massive polycount! but, I don't fully agree with the "for $25" part. That makes it seem like $25 is a huge payment for this model, while in reality I think it's actually quite cheap and in the end you do get what you pay for. For the most part I think all of these freelancers did a good to great job making something that matches or exceeds what I'd expect for these price ranges. (that said, this is from a central European perspective, which... we have a pretty high cost of living and are used to decently high wages)

@@thegamedevcave I recommend getting free models from sketchfab. And yeah. I agree. Its all a matter of perspective. I worked 7 years on a car-wiring factory in Ukraine (VW/Audi official client), messed up my back, mental. It was 3 different shifts, so goodbye personal life :D After the shifts I was wet from sweat. And all that for ~7-12$ a day.

yeah if you're coming at it from the perspective of $25 being 2-3 days of hard work it is more than fair to expect a lot more for that price! comparatively so looking at it like 2-3 hours of work :)

@@thegamedevcave are you trying to go for a low poly style for design or just less stress on system
@thegamedevcave
@thegamedevcave 5 месяцев назад
i'm certainly going for a stylized look, I'm not sure i'd really call it low poly for the most part but certainly a lot of assets aren't going to be overly detailed or realistic!

I think a $100 dollars are too much for that amount of assets for an indie game.
@thegamedevcave

if you're trying to stay as low budget as possible, you'll of course want to do everything yourself but as far as cost vs results goes, i think these seller's had reasonable prices. People's time simple costs money and assuming I had done this myself I would have spent a good handful of hours on all this. probably at least 5 or 6 hours, that converts to about $20 an hour, which I don't think is unreasonable, matter of fact I think it's rather low (i know that I wouldn't be taking on jobs with lower pay rate than that at least as a freelancer). Of course, you can't just do this for a whole game , every single asset, that ads up really quickly, especially for your first game! But for a little help in areas that you might not be as good at (I for instance fully plan to hire someone to do my music because I simply cannot do that myself), it is a decent option.

@@thegamedevcave Alright, if this is what you think then I believe you. I'm not a game dev yet, but a student. So these prices looked way too much for me.
@thegamedevcave
@thegamedevcave 5 месяцев назад
it's a matter of perspective :) as a student you for sure should try to do as much as you can yourself anyway to take every chance you get to learn!
