João Gilberto Milanez from Agroforestry International came out to Dustups Ranch to oversee the implementation of the planting plan. The first planting area covers 3,500 square feet (325 m^2) and will receive all of the love that we can give it: soil amendements, mulch, drip irrigation, etc. But first, we need to mark our syntropic lines and get everything ready.

The russian olive is honestly a terrible idea considering you are doing an experiment with a noxious invasive right on the border of a national park/ wilderness area. Instead of mildly improving desert agricultural potential you'll have massively threatened your local ecosystem with an unkillable, nitrogen fixing, heavily fruiting and bird dispersed invasive. Please don;t buy seeds mixes and instead spread plants within your property.

Yeah, avoid INVASIVE non native species, even native not in the area. Also, getting ahead of yourself? How about establishing some grasses that grow in Texas, anywhere in Texas. Native 'wild flowers' / other plants that grow in area. Get them into wetter areas you are making and let them thrive, build up bio mass. When that's going you can add non native grasses that work in Texas, or small shrubs that produce a lot of bio mass, not a few leaves, but something you can cut a lot off with mechanical cutters and leave to stabilize, add bio mass. If it was a wet place, like willow, in my area, forsythia produces 6 feet of shoots a year to cut and chip for mulch, and if you don't cut them they take over by tip rooting. Oh, if you can find a plant that tip roots, try it, if it works it's amazing how it can spread over time. When you need that part of property, that's what bulldozers are for. Make a trench a few feet deep, fill with cutings, bulldoze a covering, leave a dip to catch water...

It's honestly so, so beautiful to see. I've grown up only seeing the audacity of greed grow with each passing year, and hope dwindling. @buddhamack1491 23 дня назад
Agreed. Too many ecological disasters have happened from people with the best intentions. Why even risk it? Never worth taking shortcuts. Even if this project works, if it's caused problems in the future by spreading invasive species that get out of control then it's a massive failure.
@briang4914
@briang4914 22 дня назад
Using aggressive or even non natives has been proven to work in systems with this goal in the past. Most often you see them act as 'pioneer' plants and nature later takes over with what should be there. But of course caution is needed because of those horror stories you hear about.
@buddhamack1491
@buddhamack1491 22 дня назад
@@briang4914 It's just daft when there are also proven ways to do it with native species. He's just impatient and ignorant wanting to cut corners because the native option grows a little slower (he said it in reply to comment). That's just shown me everything I need to know about him, unsubscribed. I've literally done this type of project with my uncle. Over 20 years ago he bought some wrecked farm land and we restored it using only native species. It's now a lush forest supporting a huge variety of native species of fauna. Good things take time.
@briang4914
@briang4914 21 день назад
@@buddhamack1491 I definitely think you took the high road on that strategy for sure. But also there's been a lot of successful cases using the best plant for the job. For every bad story you hear there's been hundreds of positive cases, we just tend to focus on the negative more. Plus, when it comes down to it this is more a matter of philosophy then what's the "right" way. Everyone will argue back and forth about what land improvement means, to some that means just let it sit without any human intervention, others have different goals for their land, his is to green a desert, that goal is to change the land to a more vibrant and productive environment, and doesn't necessarily mean "all native". Plus native doesn't necessarily always mean better.
@briang4914
@briang4914 21 день назад
@@buddhamack1491 also you should share your land project with the world too so we can learn from it! Have you considered doing some videos on it? Sounds like you've figured out the perfect way to improve land. Would be a shame to just condem from the sidelines, and not share positive constructive wisdom with the world.

Behind my house is a small stream on city owned land. The Russian Olives that grew along its banks were very effective at erosion control, and the stream always stayed within its banks. It also dried up every summer because those trees are thirsty. About a decade ago the city spent a pretty penny to remove all the Russian Olive and replace it with native rushes. It was a wonderful success, and now the entire river bottom is a healthy wetland. Before, the stream was so small I could jump across it in narrow spots. Now, the wetland is at least 100 yards wide. And the best part is the stream no longer fully dries up each summer. I don't know enough about ecology to have an opinion either way about what you're doing. All I can say is keep up the good work! I can't wait to see what happens after it rains.

Some of the concern with Russian Olives is that the tree is considered invasive and competes for water disproportionately. However, they're very good at helping retain the soil and were used to prevent desertification during the dust bowl. So - I think whether or not you use those are fine. Love the series so far. Also reach out to Mossy Earth.

Russian olives are an absolute wreck on their environment. Out competing everything. We have a ranch I. Utah that’s lost close to a hundred acres that no longer is useful. The state and us rip out dozens and dozens of trees each year. Each tree sucks up hundreds of gallons each. They were brought in to help with erosion back in the early 1900’s , today you cannot get rid of them nor use the ground for anything. There is absolutely zero native plants around them. They spread and ruin the ecosystem 100% of the time. If he wants to ruin his plans and the property and the property and water ways around him for mikes plant Russian olive trees. I would hope he understands the short term and long term repercussions of non native plants. 75-100 years ago they were doing it to improve the environment and it always turns out bad.

I like the tree seeds. Especially the honey locust. I mentioned black locust a while back. THose trees are survivors. The have long roots that go out 30 yards. Those roots send up new trees. Before you know it, you have a black locust forest to provide shade and retain ground moisture. Native grasses are also important. Of course, everything is water dependent.

Im glad to see Hes starting to do things correctly now. (Atleast what was shown) shows he did listen finally and planted the cactus properly. Sometime people will read a comment and thinks its negative but its not meant that way, simply reading something often seems worse then it was meant. Because of the lack of body language involved in a conversation. He just needs to plant some mother trees so he can get this thing really rolling. Trees are the key to all the under story growing and sustaining themselves. Some mother trees some mulch for that area, then U can begin a nursery of smaller plants under those mother trees, which will help create a better micro climate for them. As i mentioned in ur 'fermenting soil" video this will begin a cascading effect which will drastically change things and begin to produce fruits for ur labor. As ur Brazilian friend (sorry his name scapes me at the moment) This would give U the spark in ur eye to continue to be motivated. And it wont seem like a never ending 🕳 where Ur time effort and money is going down without any real progress

This is the kind of video I watch to deal with climate grief. This is the work we need to be doing. Thank you for documenting this.

You commented that you have a lot of rocks in the property, that should be your first items moved. Make rock dams in the washes to slow down the movement of water. If you can get the water to leave the washes, you can promote grass growth, once you have grass you can move up to small bushes and trees. Your goal could be to set up an environment for beavers to eventually start building dams. Plant fruit trees so that birds and bats can help spread seeds. You have lots of deer in the area… make sure you can use them for spreading seeds. First protect trees from them.

Suggestion; you might consider making a custom seed/mulch mat. You can create the mat in comfort populated for the season and location and include organic matter and water bearing compost. Then dig a simple furrow by machine (motorized plow, walk behind) and roll out the mat covering as you go. Then measure the efficiency improvement.

so something i was just seeing being done in africa which might be useful for you is that they were reforesting by digging half moon shaped dugouts to catch rain water and host plants in it and on the ridge of the hole. the digging up of that dirt helped tremendously with freeing the soul to accept water and plants. Worth looking into. They're calling it the green wall.

I did this on a small scale unintentionally. I've always wanted to expand my idea from that little camp, but could not afford a backhoe. A Ford Backhoe would be of great help and they can be picked up fairly reasonable and they can be worked on fairly easy. I like what you're doing Shaun!!
