Oh what fun. When you use a sailboat for transportation, everything from winds, recalcitrant tides, mechanical breakdowns, or whatever can affect the trip. It looks like an opportunity to accept what is happening and deal with it. You sailed on a Great Dane 28, a very sturdy pocket cruiser, known for long offshore passages. I have it's twin brother, purchased as a derelict and being refit as I write this. It completed a 5 year westabout circumnavigation in 1983 with year long stops in Tahiti, Fiji, Australia and South Africa. It's not fast, but incredibly safe in heavy weather.
