As a 71 year old woman, I would love to do what you have just done. Only with my husband....I felt like I was there with you every day. I felt your hunger, your cold, your exhaustion and your loneliness at times, I think. You are a very skilled young man. Like my husband who I have tremendous respect for in all of our outings. I felt when you were totally exhausted, you needed more fat and carbs. You were working very hard collecting all your firewood and building your shelter. Just loved this whole series. I hope you do this again soon. I absolutely loved the wilderness in every aspect. You probably won’t read this but if you do, have a wonderful life with your family.

How much farther do you expect him to go? He said it was a 6 hour drive, then he went by two planes and then I think a truck and then by ATVs, then he had to canoe to where he was going to camp. Goodness sake. :D

As I watched this, Joe, it occurred to me that many Hollywood films are the same length as this video, but not nearly as good. I was totally absorbed by this video, and found it as therapeutic as I always find your videos. Hollywood movies, by contrast, usually piss me off because of one thing or another. Also, regarding your birthday...I am twenty years your senior almost to the day, and am here to tell you that my life only got better as I got older, as it continues to do. The loss of youth is counterbalanced by peace of mind, wisdom and self-assurance.

When your lemon is low, throw in the pot and cook with the food
@mawmawvee
@mawmawvee 6 лет назад
For next time--You could use the bones and head to make a rich fish stock to boost your nourishment and then don't boil the life out of the meat fillets. Then cook your rice and veggies in some of the stock, put the poached fish back into the rice after it's cooked. Drink more water and be sure you have enough salt with you to make up for what you sweat out of your pores. You've been starving yourself. This is selfish on my part--I want you to live to make many more good videos like this series. God bless and keep you in His care always.

I just wanted to say that adding a lot more lard would have been a huge calorie gain. It's about 120 calories per Tablespoon (13g)

Jerky has a lot of salt so his salt was probably fine although if he didnt have that he would have needed some. He could have salted the lard before going also.

I'm surprised Joe didn't set some snares around & see if he could get some of the birds/squirrels. Squirrel stew is very yummy! Or just grilled. A change from fish (which I love, but every day, lunch and dinner?!) & more calories. You might consider bringing some quinoa next time, or mixing it w/the rice - more protein. Great video, thanks so much!

2 things. First, it’s been said before but I’ll say again. Living vicariously through your experiences is therapeutic. Thank you. Your videos are excellent, and demonstrate a love and respect for our wilderness that I’ll use to teach my young boys. Second, every time I watched you use that lemon, and not shave some of the peel into hot oil and then do your cooking... I cried a little. Missed opportunity. The most lemon flavour is in the rind, and fat carries it soooo well. Pro tip... if your hard up for ingredients, take every opportunity to build flavour. Use that zest! You’re a champion among men otherwise. Thanks again. ;)

Joe, your videos are relaxing and educational. I will say that on this trip I suspect you're right, and were not getting anywhere near enough fat or electrolytes. Your exhaustion had me concerned at times with you canoeing on those windy days. Easy tricks for the future are Himalayan pink salt (for electrolytes) in the seasoning (not sure what salt was in yours), and cooking with more lard (or other hiking friendly fat like smoked cheese, or ghee). Thank you for sharing your trip and birthday with us. :)

I hate wearing gloves too, but you have to take care of your hands. Next time you should try taking a few more herbs and spices. Mustard (powder) is good for burns, basil and thyme are antimicrobial, fennel seed is good for digestion, rosemary and chilies are great for congestion and colds and excessive amounts of black pepper can help headaches. Dried or fresh chilies are also great topical pain relievers (just avoid using them near more sensitive areas). Personally, I prefer a small jar of tiger balm if possible. Honey is also antimicrobial, great for burns and an excellent binder for making poultices. You can add more flavor to your food as well as having a decent light weight medicine pack. If you can find wild mint or wintergreen, rubbing the oils on your skin is great as a bug repellent and for itch relief. They are also drying oils that can help clear up poisons like ivy, sumac, oak and hemlock. To use any of these is pretty simple. If the ailment is internal, make some tea or add it to your food. (Tea acts quicker). If the ailment is external, apply directly and cover only if you are going to be moving around a lot. Fresh onion or shallot bulb juice is also good for burns. Fresh Garlic is good for cuts and blisters. Fresh ginseng root is great for headaches, exhaustion and stomach problems, but is a bit trickier to find. Thyme and fresh oregano are more or less cure-all's and can be added to any application. Fresh sage thrown on the fire can do wonders for insect suppression and can be added to teas for energy and colds. Fresh evergreen needles, particularly pines, are good for colds as well. When I worked as a chef, knowing what herbs and spices can be used to quickly treat an injury has helped me recover in record time more times that I could probably remember. I also use this all the time when I'm out fishing or hiking. Spice jars are smaller and lighter than a med kit and each item is more versatile. Since I grow most of this myself it's also free for me, as well. That doesn't mean I don't also have an Israeli bandage, adhesive bandages and a few alcohol pads just in case, but the amount I have on me fits into the box my wallet came in.
@oskari61
@oskari61 6 лет назад
That's sounds like way more work than alcohol, ibuprofen, soap and a band-aid. I do agree on the Israeli bandage (whatever that is) and the rest...

He actually has a point a lot of these things are grown at home originally as cures to various issues and are the reason they ended up common place in cooking. I would maybe say this is better for homesteading than trekking but knowing the uses is always good for improvised medicine. Some things can even be used to substitute serious medicine like dietetics {I think this is the right word} to aid in fighting kidney failure until you can get back to real help. Things like dandelion can be live saving if you know what to do and use.

Joe you're one of the most grateful people around. We're born in the same year and you're elder to me by a few months but your insights into life are years ahead of me. I'm learning alot watching your videos. I'm getting inspired to start keeping a journal again like I used to, start being more grateful and enjoy in the little things that seem insignificant to me most of the time. Thanks for the wonderful videos, I hope to see more of it. Keep it coming brother. And all the best to reaching 1 million subscribers.

I watch the whole thing back to back. Thers is something so calming and peaceful watching Joe as he uses his skills and knowledge to survive in the wilderness. He mst be a bit fed up with eating Pike though, but he caught some big fish!! Amazing scenery and sunsets. It was one of the most enjoyable videos I have seen on RU-vid, thanks Joe.

i'm a bit late to the party, but i watched this mini-series over the course of two days (and a couple of your other videos) and i have to say, you're such a nice dude, so down to earth and very considerate re: nature and being sure not to leave too much of a footprint wherever you stay. the ambiance in your videos is so calming and carefree. you're such a joy to watch and learn from. ♥

Great video. Try eating more of the lard with the fish in the absence of carbs. When low on energy it will help big time. High fat diet. The Inuit have been doing it for thousands of years. Give it a try. Don’t be afraid of fat. Too much sugar and carbs are the real enemy, not fat.
@shieldmaiden000
@shieldmaiden000 6 лет назад
Exactly! Too many people are on the wrong path of ideas when they think higher carbs are better. Sugar is the enemy to the body. Carbs should be taken in very few amounts; but when you have nothing to eat make sure you get that fat. Eat all the parts of the fish...the skin and eyes too. Hunt for slugs, grubs, roots, mushrooms (if you know the difference in good and bad mushrooms)berries, etc. There are plenty of plant life out there that he should have partaken in. I love watching his videos, but being an avid outdoors person I know the importance of proper preparation for outings such as this and how a balance diet is one of the most important things to consider when out there.
@shieldmaiden000
@shieldmaiden000 6 лет назад
And to be honest; I would have kept all my fish and smoked them to jerky so that if I did become too exhausted as he was experiencing, I wouldn't have had to go out to fish. The fish would have been already cooked and ready for me in case of an emergency.

Carbs are not bad if you know which are the right carbs and they can boost your energy for longer term. He boiled the life out of his fish. He could have made a good stock out of the head and bones of the fish to boost the nourishment of the rice. I hope he didn't get back home sick.

If you eat the wrong carbs, meaning processed carbs, then it is bad for insulin, heart etc. Unprocessed oats, boiled or baked potatoes, yums and sweet potatoes or rice are OK. Your animal fat consumption should be 20% of your total daily fat consumption.

Meanwhile I'm just sitting here thinking "he feels terrible because he should be eating 2 fish per day." It's quite a lot of volume, but a low calorie food. Your lard could have padded the diet better, even just melting a tablespoon or two into the rice. And even a lemon rind is edible (and good in soup stock or lemon tea) if you boil it out. Boil your fish heads and peels, stew your rice and fish, finish it out with a good blorb of lard and a pinch of the veggies. I think you probably only got about 1100 Kcal / day!
@bena3341

Yea even just using all the lard would have made a huge difference.

I can't go camping without a bottle of scotch or whiskey. That's my one thing I always bring no matter how much I'm roughing it. I camp mostly in the North Georgia mountains or on islands in the intercoastal in Florida. Both super fun. Intercoastal island camping is awesome because there is so much food. Usually we set out traps and feast on blue crabs. If we go on a full moon you go out at around midnight and it's really easy to catch shrimp. The island I like to camp on..one side is a little creek going in and the other side has no boat access but you cam hang up a hammock and watch the ships go by. So relaxing.

Hi Joe: 34 years, wow. How much did the 10 days age you? The trip seems to be more & more an endurance feat than an adventure. What have you learned for next time? I'm wondering if you would consider doing this type of trip annually? However. maybe take a few more supplies next time./ Personally, I'm impressed with the singular isolation & beauty of the place . I understand your attitude about preserving fish too big to be used in one day; to me it shows a lot of maturity. That was quite a birthday cake & quite a special birthday. 34 Wow! Do it now while you can it's much harder at 78 Thanks Brian 78

That was an epic mini-series. Just one thought. If you do a ten items trip, on of them HAS TO BE a spare Nalgene or something to store water. Your Keto flu was made much worse by dehydration. If you had been able to boil water and store it and drink it cool you would have been in much better shape. Even a portable filter would have been better. You can't rely on drinking from your cooking can. You have to have some way of storing water separate from cooking.
