Your son is so smart! He was literally trying to get you to speak English the whole time to rake in the dough! The part with him choosing an English book and wanting you to read it in English was hilarious!! I also loved that he said he loved both Chinese and English "more". He appreciates both and I love that

I loved that bilingual art class idea. Kids can learn both languages unconsciously in play mode. You are a good father who knows how to motivate and communicate with young kids . Plz share more of your parenting tips .

Your chinese is better than mine by a lightyear. It’s great for us English speakers who watch you to see how to say certain sentences in Mandarin. So it’s helpful for us too
Hi Mike, I'm a retired teacher of English living in the south of China. First off, I am really jealous of your Mandarin. Next, there's so much that I would like to share with you. I just finished watching 3 of your videos -- two that were really fun (inspiring and insightful too) but one that was sad, in other words, your leaving China. I speak fluent Cantonese like a native speaker because I lived here my whole life. Like your son, I straddle East and West with a Shanghainese mother and Portuguese father. I absolutely understand and agree with the sometimes impossibility of trying to translate between a Chinese dialect and English. There are some Cantonese expressions, especially in slang, where I would feel the meaning and not be able to translate adequately to English to transmit the same feeling. The same problem crops up with translating English too. The students you interviewed did a pretty good job, especially the two who watched American TV. Their responses were very natural, close to native speakers, and with little or no hint of the influence of Mandarin. I can also see what's happening with your son and understand his tendency to prefer English. I could see his enjoyment when using English. This is typical too with some of my past and present students. He's a great kid. You're a lucky dad. I am still tutoring online and, strangely (but happily) enough, with a 9-year-old girl in Shanghai. Her English is way above the other kids in her school because of her early exposure to English cartoons and love of English. Her Mandarin is good too. She picks up English so fast -- pronunciation, reading stories aloud and speaking. There are tons of students, that I met teaching, who stand out from the crowd in English just because they "lived" English having fun with it every day. There is so much more I could share with you as well as learn from you through your experience in China with the students and people there.
It’s very hard to control yourself and to be always focused to speak one language. Speaking from experience, since I often switch between not 2 but 3 languages (Chinese included)
If you under American way to educate your kids , he or she will more independent and individualism mind , however the old Chinese way he or she has been told fear or high respect elders especially their parents , so that’s different , nothing right or wrong . 小麥的發音太棒了！
