The UFC doesn't really punish a guys path who misses weight and wins. Their career advances as normal. Good for wonderboy, because there is not that much of an incentive to make weight beyond character.

I am assuming that mischel did miss weight on purpose & hoping the fight will still be on. He didn’t even look like he tried to cut weight. Big reason? He wants an advantage. Due to elevation. They need to revise the rules about missing weight. A heavier penalty. So nobody will miss weight. How about an automatic L on your record? In my opinion they are professional prize fighter. You know what u signed for & u have at least 3 months to prepare for the fight. You should make the weight. It’s all about professionalism dedication & To your craft. You need to have DISCIPLINE. esp if fighting is your bread & butter.

HOT TAKE - Its much harder to hit the weight 3 times a year because its not your natural weight. If you maintain the weight for an entire season each Friday, that means you are walking around in that weight and are not actually cutting much, if at all.

Wonderboy was absolutely in the right and it's disgusting that Dana uses his name to sell the card, has ALL the budget for the pay set in stone already, regardless of how the event does financially, and then doesn't pay Wonderboy. This guy has been a model fighter, a true company man and a consummate professional. He deserves better.

Maybe each fight on the main card should have a back up fighter that both fighters agree with, if one fighter misses weight, they get cut and the back up gets the fight, and the money of the replaced.

I’m pretty sure that he did consider the weight difference to matter. In a split decision; everything very close, it could be just a few pounds difference that mattered in some way. And that’s what had happened before to him he said. What they need to do is induce a real penalty, for example if it does come to a split decision, they guy who didn’t make weight would always lose it. I’m pretty sure if that was the case he would have taken the fight.

I don't blame Wonderboy at all for not fighting him, but what I think should happen is the price of the Ppv go down $10 since at that point it's not a full card. Is it really gonna break the ufc to pay him? This is a grimy thing to do to someone who has been a great ambassador for the organization. Huge black eye for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Should they honor their employees and pay the man? Yes. But you absolutely shouldn't be surprised that a fighter contracted to fight didn't get paid because he didn't fight. Maybe they need to add a clause or something that states he gets X dollars in this situation. if his contract said no fight no pay there is nothing more to say. Each year that passes it seems like signing your name to a legal contract means less and less. Bleeding hearts hold more weight than a legal contract in current year

Shouldn’t there be some legal clause in the contact he signed that prevents this type of situation? I mean he signed for a 170 bout, where they have a 1 pound leeway. What is the point in saying fighters can only be allowed over 1lb, if the ufc will just threaten to take away the other fighters pay if he refuses??

The chimney isnt a good metaphor. Chimney builders dont work for 6-10 weeks to prepare to build a chimney. They also dont risk their lives dehydrating tf out of themselves before showing up to build the chimney. Or spend 10s of thousands of dollars to prep to build said chimney

I believe it was about the weight, and I don't mind at all. At this level, you shouldn't allow yourself to miss by 4 pounds, I think it shows you don't belong with the big boys.

On the one hand I am disappointed that Wonderboy didn't go on with the fight. On the other hand he made weight he did want he needed to do, the other guy didn't and Wonderboy is right the penalty isn't high enough for it. Also he has personal history where he lost to Till who also missed weight by 4 pounds. I'd be curious to know how many fighters who miss weight win the fight maybe broken down by favorite vs. dog and compared to favorite vs. dog stats where both made weight. I'd guess that the fighter who missed weight outperforms similar dogs/favorites who make weight. Maybe a fighter who misses weight should lose 10% of their purse per pound missed and also lose 1 point to start the fight.

This is why fighters need a union…. He did his contractual duties, he should be compensated for work to that point.

Wonderboy should get paid just like a contractor. Half when he makes weight, half after the match takes place. You don't make weight you get half ONLY if the other fighter agrees to continue with the bout.

Missing weight should be a fine/fee, with that money going to the opponent. If the fight continues, they still lose part of the purse. Missing weight is no where near strict enough… but this is coming from a wrestler 🤷‍♂️

Yeah these last few years I’ve seen more catch weight bouts then I ever have. No one should have to put up with their opponents not making weight

I've seen A side boxers throw fighters who missed weight out at the scale. Nothing wrong with that at all. Fighters need to do their job. Simple as that.

What if he missed weight on purpose? Takes the pay cut or even gives wonderboy 100% of his pay but still beats WB. Now he has advanced his ranking well into the 10. The purpose of the weight miss would have given MP a significant advantage.

If you miss weight then it should be an automatic TKO loss, you don't get paid a single penny, and your opponent gets both purses.

If Pereira hadn't intended to miss weight, that would have been a very obviously bad week for him but it wasn't. Look at his interviews. He felt great that week because he never intended to make weight. And I wish they made people fight at their natural weight.

Wonderboy was concerned about the weight as he alluded to in the Ariel interview. 4lbs means something to him.

I have a feeling Michel Pereira missed weight on purpose because they were fighting at high altitude. Michel is huge for 170 and his stamina is an issue because of how much he has to cut to make weight. Now add in the fact that this fight would have been at high altitude against an opponent that fights at a fast pace, I wouldn't be surprised if Michel made the decision to intentionally miss weight in order to have an advantage. I'm glad Wonderboy decided not to fight that cheater. But it sucks that the UFC is withholding his show money even though Wonderboy did nothing wrong. He was the professional that showed up and made weight.

I stand with WB and more so after I met him on Saturday night at a mall in SLC, the guy was in such a rush but still took the time for a picture with me and my kids. Truly one special human and one of a kind fighter.

He was 3 lbs over and I bet you come fight time that goes to 20lbs or more. Now imagine him taking down Wonderboy and using that extra weight to hold him down. Wonderboy loses and sees his final push ended. I am with Wonderboy on this.

If every fighter pulls out for their opponent missing weight, it could have a positive impact on every division. No weight bullies. Maybe even increase the % amount they lose from their purse for missing. And even a 3 strikes and you’re out rule where if you miss weight 3 times you get shitcanned

I stand with Wonderboy too. When a guy doesn't cut weight and doesnt make weight, it gives him a huge advantage. Anyone who's ever cut serious weight knows that. If you think a guy should fight a guy who missed weight, why even have weight classes at all?

Not a fan of fights getting scrapped but Wonderboy can do what he wants... and he's 100% in the right here. Punishment is not harsh enough for guys who don't make weight

Chael's observation of being raised right is spot on. I grew up in Simpsonville with Stephen. His family is well known for Upstate Karate ever before Wonderboy had his illustrious Kickboxing career. He is the exact same person from grade school as you see on TV. 💯

This is the UFC’s problem. They should have costs figured in for exactly this scenario. Not only did Michel try and cheat WB, now the UFC is too. They’re strategy is simple: scare fighters into taking fights.

Michelle vs Wonderboy was my favorite match-up on 291 . When I first heard Michelle missed weight I immediately knew it was intentional done . Everyone knows Thompson is the nicest guy and assumed he would accept the weight advantage . Everyone knows the weight misses are intentional to gain an unfair size advantage , giving up 30% of one fight purse means nothing to them as long as they raise in the ranks for an eventual title fight. It's disgusting how the ufc blames the fighter who made weight because he wouldn't accept a fight against an obvious cheat

Wonderboy deserves his show money

You can't blame Wonderboy for a violation that his opponent committed, but the UFC should've done the right thing and given him his show money for making weight. The fact that he went through an entire training camp and cut the weight just to walk away with nothing is a slap in the face.

What you missed Chael, is that four pounds over will let him gain back exponentially on fight night . So Wonder Boy follows the rules, the other clown refuses to go the extra mile and figures this will give him the ultimate chance to win the fight and he'll better his record at the cost of half his purse . Also, there always is perks for winning a fight .

It's another example of some of this countries biggest problems... the lack of accountability and consequences. I'm happy for Steve, but feel bad at the same time. You know he wanted to fight, but someone has to stand up for what's right. Guys will start caring when their wallets start taking a hit. Wonderboy showed up and fulfilled his obligation and got screwed.

EVERYONE in the MMA community stands with Wonderboy. He is a real one, a true warrior, and a gentleman. He is the last person anyone should try messing with because the amount of respect people have for him is IMMENSE. If wonderboy isn't paid we just might have to start a boycot.
