I’ve never understood non-chronological writing but after your puzzle analogy I totally get it. I’ve done quite a few 1000 piece puzzles and now I’m writing a book and I _totally get_ how those two things are analogous. You can’t just stick in one place in a big puzzle! It’s impossible. And I know I get inspiration for later parts of my story as I write it as well. Personally though, I just assume based on the kind of person I am that _my_ inspiration for things that are really far off, is probably just trashy wish fulfillment and won’t be viable by the time I actually get there. Lol.

I don’t know if you’ll see this... but I’m putting this out there. DRAFTING IS THE BEST! And I’m ashamed to admit that I have five complete first drafts (still haven’t been edited or reread). One of them needing a whole rewrite 😢 I personally HATE rewrites. Oml thank you for this vlog (I don’t know how I just found your channel) definitely subbed

I do not understand how you can write out of order, I did it for a few years and basically everyone of my manuscripts caught fire. Glad it works for you thought :) Part of it might be that I'm a pantser, I have to write chronologically because that is how I get to discover the plot and characters. Good luck with the draft :D

The puzzle analogy is spot on but you forgot to mention when you lose a friggin piece of the puzzle. So when I’m writing and feel like something is missing, it drives me nuts. *“WHERE’S THE FREAKING CORNER PIECE?”*

I am also an OBSESS with graphs and stats😂 (I work on market intelligence, so I really never escape them!:D) Also, wow I never really thought of the chronological order in that way! I really love to write that way, and as I don't exactly flow into them, I don't really struggle that way- but the puzzle analogy makes so much sense & has got me thinking! 🤔

Hi Katytastic!!! I'm so glad you're back to making videos again!! Also I wish I could jump around like you do with writing but I have to write my books chronologically otherwise I get everything mixed up!! :) Although I guess right now with my Paranormal- Mystery I'm kind of jumping around because it's almost like writing a comedy show where each chapter is it's own story. yayy weekly writing vlogs!! so you just double the 27 chapters because you have two POVs? I've been wondering how to apply the 3 ACT structure for multiple POVs because I'm currently planning a novel with 2 MCs. Do you think it could also work to stick with 27 chapters and divide the plotpoints over the different POVs?

oh yeah, totally! my initial outline of this book was splitting the plot points between the POVs! but as i worked out details i realized i wanted short chapters, so doubling up the 27 points made more sense with the pacing style i wanted. so yeah, both ways could definitely work! the 27 chapter method is pretty flexible that way :)

What was it about chapter two that made you want to skip it? As tempting as it may be to jump to the parts of the story that you want to write, I think it might be better in the long run to force yourself to examine exactly why chapter two is so much less tantalizing to write than chapter three. There might be a structural issue there that you need to resolve. (P.S. I'm pretty sure this is like my twelth time watching this series all the way through, so I'm just going to start commenting afresh. You can do it, Kat!❤)

Does anyone know how Kat got the progress bar to be different colours? in my version of scrivener it just shows up blue. Is there a way to make it different colours based on whether you've reached the word count or is Kat doing that while editing the video? Please help!

Non-chronological writing is fascinating to me. I'm not a writer, but if I were, I have a feeling that I would mostly write linearly, because I wouldn't trust myself to bring the right momentum or feeling to a scene without the buildup of getting there, you know? I feel Iike I might get excited and write a nonlinear scene, but when I would get to it linearly, I would likely want to change it. 😅 Knowing myself, I'd probably keep the scenes I'm excited for as "treats" to motivate myself to get through the least exciting bits. Otherwise I'd never get it done.

I find that there are certain scenes that require a certain mood...for when I write. I also don't mind starting in the middle or the end because its on my mind and I need it off my mind to focus on anything productive. That's how I as a non-chronological order writer work, but since I got the bulk of what I've written more or less fleshed in,I have now pushed onto a linear path because the chronological order is there.

@@alexpaleale well, I'm a reader, so I watch a lot of booktubers. I love Kat's personality and find her analytical way of approaching writing very interesting. Plus, it's fun to watch people do things I have no talent or inclination for (especially artistic people) :P

Looking at all of writing vlogs from Kat, Jesse, and Christine, I realize that I'm really just a mix of all them while writing. I tend to write better while pantsing (Christine), I do outline and tend to want to not chronologically write (Kat), and I tend to make revisions and edits while I'm writing or in the middle of a draft (Jesse).
