I so understand your complaint about the prices. It's the same for us Finns. But then, when you consider that these folk need to live on the income that they get in a few months, because there ain't nobody in for the tourism called how to survive being eaten by mosquitoes.

A few tips from a local. You can do this a little cheaper by renting an airbnb or a cheaper hotel room from the city. No need to use taxi unless you want to stay at the Santa's village very late. Public transport in Rovaniemi is not the best but during the day busses go from center to Santa's village at least once an hour and cost is about 3-5€ depending on how you pay (cash, bus app or the city bus card). The routes and timetables are online in English. The village itself is free to enter so you can enjoy the atmosphere and see Santa Claus for free if you don't want the video of your experience. Food is a bit cheaper in the city and of course there are grocery stores there. The city is full of walking routes that you can explore for free (we have the freedom to roam law so all forrests are okay to walk in) and if you have your own skies you can ski totally free as much as you want since there are at least couple of hundred kilometers of free ski routes all over the city. Free fire places are also available pretty close to the center and free ice rinks all over if you get skates from somewhere (cheap ones are about 20€ at stores). Also free play grounds for kids are everywhere, biggest is an Angry Birds play ground very close to the center where you can also slide a small hill if there is snow. Excursions are expensive everywhere. I have payed similar prises in Canary Isles and Turkey for trips to local farms, snorkeling or a tour to a local historical or natural site. But the northern lights and stars are free to watch if you go to a less lighted place on a clear night and look towards the North. For example somewhere around Ounasvaara hill area where there are walking routes and a free fire place on top (just don't walk on the ski routes, locals won't thank you for that). There is also an Arctic zoo (reindeers, moose, wolves, lynx, brown bears, polar bears etc.) in Ranua about 80km from the city and a public bus there and back costs about 30€ plus 22€ ticket for the zoo from an adult. There are couple of nice but not totally free museums in the city, a nice little church and a couple of cemeteries that look beautiful with all the candless in the dark around all saints day and Christmas eve and day. Rovaniemi is a pretty normal small city in Finland with a little twist from tourism, being a univercity city, and having the air force base that caused the flight noice, so you can do many other than chrismassy things too, like swim in the river in the summer, do many indoor sports, go to movies, pubs and night clubs etc. Reindeers can sometimes be seen loitering on the streets outside the imidiate city center, so they are not just a touristy thing eather.

True, I was in a Guest House in Rovaniemi for 70 euro, and from there with city bus 8 for 3.70 Euro. This is OK, but Finnland is very expencive, even Sweden and Germany are cheaper. These nights for €70 in Rovaniemi were booked 5 months in advance, with no cancellation option, with shared bathroom and toilet, no breakfast. In Luleå in a first-class hotel with bathroom and toilet, with breakfast, in the center of the city and near the sea, it cost me only 65 euros. In Kiruna, similar - a single room with bathroom and toilet, with breakfast included, with the option to cancel up to 3 days before arrival, cost me 60 euros. In Germany, the prices for overnight stays in hotels are similar, and overnight stays in guesthouses can be found for as little as 35 euros. Why is Finland so expencive by less salary than Sweden and Germany? Even food in Supermarkt in Rovaniemi is much expenciver than in Sweden and Germany.

When I lived in Alaska (32 miles from the Arctic Circle in Fairbanks) it was -60F. (-51C.) quite often, but once it hits -20F. It doesn't really feel any colder when it goes even lower. Lots of Northern lights too! I suspect you would like it!

We visited this place a couple years ago while travelling to the North Cape in Norway, very commercialized indeed but meeting Santa there was a truly magical experience. We speak Dutch and were very surprised that Santa could speak Dutch as well. That felt like true Christmas magic! We were there in summer though, but I'd love to visit during winter time as well, it's looks so beautiful. Unfortunately I don't like the cold 😅

We went to Santa's village in summer a few years ago. Especially went into Finland from Sweden when we toured Norway, Sweden and Denmark for 3 months in our motorhome. Absolutely loved it. We went to Elf school and had picture with Santa but managed to take our own picture. Sent loads of Christmas cards from post office which were all posted in time for Christmas all over the world. We parked in the main area for 2 days, for free and had midnight sun. Best experience ever. I think probably better than in winter, but it does look as if it has changed a lot but ot for the better. Reindeer hides are pretty common here in northern scandinavia, and has been for a very long time. It's a byproduct of slaughtering them, and the price is actually reasonable. Better than throwing away parts of animal you could use.

@nickolay6277
@nickolay6277 Год назад
May I remind you that Lapland is twice the size of Ireland. There's plenty of other options than this particular commercialized resort filled only by foreign tourists. My tip: Inari. A small little village/town with 1,500 residents and a real taste of indigenous Sami culture. Plenty of accommodations, good restaurants, Sami cultural sites and actual people living there. Also the best place/area for spotting northern lights.
@pp-bf2ec
@pp-bf2ec Год назад
Lapland is not same as Santa's Village. Santa's village a business. Lapland is huge area with amazing nature. You can also stay in Rovaniemi for cheaper accommodation and just do day trip(s) to the Village.
@pp-bf2ec
@pp-bf2ec Год назад
@@jackwatsonepic626 The place is packed from December to February. Also July and August gets lot of visitors. Other times it's like you see in video. People visiting, but not too crowded. You can visit Santa for free. We visit with my family every year. If you want photo/video, that cost 50 euro. And that is not per person. For whole group it's 50 euro. To be honest it's not really that expensive if you don't stay in the village in December. And anyways it's a once a lifetime experience.

looks quant but very commercialized and expensive for what it is, but it must be really neat for a total immersion experiance like this, we have a santa place as well in indiana down in the southern part called holiday world it was the first theme park in the world in santa clause indiana almost by the kentucky boarder I think, there was another place down there also that used to have a santa theamed park that had a giant cement santa in a nearby place but that was before the 1940's I think, curiously though holiday world is only open in the summer to fall, not during winter looks pretty up there though, its funny they speak pretty good english up there for it being a differant type of germanic language then even german or dutch. well have fun and merry christmas for you hopefully Mr Tim. the northern lightes are something else for sure I only saw an aurora 2 times and not very well here in indiana and that was during the summer we saw an aurora.

English person visits tourist trap Santa Park, complains that it's a tourist trap, moans about the prices, wears jeans in minus 14, hilariously claims it's too cold to snow, and then has a moral dilemma about the idea of reindeer pelts and reindeer meat (despite it possibly being the most sustainably farmed natural meat and skins you can source, via native Sami herders). And then eats farmed salmon and pines for a Starbucks. Gotta love the Brits... 🤣

Lovely atmosphere in the "holiday camp" but I just know if I paid a hundred Euro for a half-day trip and was then told to "wait" and muster and relax and snack-up and dress up, I'd be fuming.

Maybe I've been in Cambridge too long but €99 for a 3 hour trip seems pretty reasonable to me! I'm going to look at booking here for 2024 I think

Loved the video but my only criticism is you go about how expensive it is. It is Lapland with high tourism so bound to be expensive, if people did their research they should know this. Secondly the lack of snow you keep mentioning, this is because it’s mid nov. I’ve been to Levi every year for the past 10 years

Just visited the Santa village today. It looked so different today walking around in a tshirt in 25 degrees compared to - 14... Also it was a lot quieter, had only 2 groups ahead in the queue to meet santa. A great experience!

Thanks for this video. I love watching the live cams from this part of the world and of Levi the ski resort. It’s fascinating to me being from Australia. I’ve heard before that it’s very expensive there. However, you’d probably only go there once, so what is the point of going and not doing the activities etc. might as well stay home and open the freezer door….lol. Love the husky tour you did and the northern lights. The people of Finland seem very friendly and polite. It would definitely be on my bucket list.

Stunning video,Tim. Lapland looks so beautiful. But the costs! Thanks for honestly highlighting how pricey it all is. I'd love to go to see the country and the Northern Lights, not so much for Santa these days.😊👍 Btw the way, I'm glad you offered your hand, initially, to Santa. I hate that elbow bump thing.
