Wow now I’m m really famous! Hehehe Sorry I forget to bring out the axe while you were here 🤣😂🤣. Honestly it was an honor to host you and Teka for an evening and we’d do it again!!! Thanks for stopping by and our home is always open to you and Teka❤️❤️ Here’s to hoping to see the both of you next summer in Scotland!!!
What a lovely, serene place you have. Thank you for hosting Shaun and Teka and allowing us to experience this part of his trip. And, to be a great example of good ol' American hospitality, kindness and friendliness. So, happy I am American where every stranger has the potential to become a friend or someone that leaves a never forgotten imprint in your life. Wishing you all the best. I hope you get to Scotland next year.
Beautiful location, nice company, and genuine American generosity. 99.9% of us love to show off our home towns and culture, and share good company. As ever, really enjoying your travels.
What a blast! I want to stay at Donna and Paul's house! Great hosts! I'm glad you went there and had a nice barbeque with fresh fruit and corn on the cob! Summer cookouts in the US are the best. Deer grazing, birds at the feeders. What a great place to live. Thanks for the vlog Shaun! Much love to you and Teka💜
Donna and her husband seem super nice and I love their house in Scott's Valley. I grew up a stone's throw away from there and miss it and Santa Cruz. How nice of them to invite you to stay! I hope that you got to experience Santa Cruz. And did you ride the Giant Dipper? If you've ever seen the film Lost Boys, it was filmed in Santa Cruz.
Greetings from Arizona! You might find it interesting to know that the paddle cactus you were admiring is an "opuntia ficus indica" which is the largest of the "prickly pear" varieties. The paddles are called "nopa" and the round fruits are called "tuna" in Spanish. The fruits are edible and used to make all sorts of things, including jams, candies and lots of other goodies. If you were to go into the produce section of a grocery store just about anywhere in the southwestern region of the country, you're likely to find packages of the paddles harvested from this plant and used to make nopales, which are thinly sliced, cooked cactus. The two specimens we have growing in our backyard here in the Sonoran Desert are 15 feet high and just about as wide. In several parts of the world ... especially in Australia and Africa ... the cacti are extremely invasive and considered nothing better than weeds.
Thanks! You are correct; that cactus is a prickly pear paddle minus the prickles! It was developed by a man named called Luther Burbank. He created it because ranchers with cows didn't like the prickles, and he was hoping the cows would eat them, but alas, that didn't happen, but we now have a prickly pear paddle cactus; with no prickles! Cheers!
@@Paulsapartment Interesting that there aren't any thorns/needles. Our giant ones in our backed have little bumps evenly spaced all over them and hidden in each bump is a LOT of microscopic needles. The locals simply remove them by scrubbing with a piece of wet newspaper.
Hi Shaun! Again a great vlog ! So nice that you were invited and to have a view inside this great adventure in tne United States! I myself, live in Europe, the Netherlands so life here is different and that makes the vlogs you're making extra special, whether your adventures are in Scotland, the USA or somewhere else! Wish you and Teka all the best and have a great weekend! Take care, Kirsten😇👌
That's the California I always dreamed about visiting - Beautiful drive by the Pacific Ocean, mountain retreats. I'll bet you two will be keeping in touch with Donna and Paul. You all seemed to have a great time together!
Mustang Mach 1 fastback... 1971 or 2. Red like that, hard top. That car loved mountain roads. My father told me buying a red sports car meant that every cop out there would be watching.... never got a ticket in it though. I did get stopped, but he was going the opposite direction and couldn't clock my speed (which was just under 100 mph at the time). Nice older guy. He asked me where I was going and I told him Flagstaff. Then he said 'Going a little fast, weren't you?' I smiled and said I didn't think I should comment on that. He just told me to be careful, and that Flagstaff wasn't going anywhere.
The axe murderer discussion made me think of a classic comedy movie So I married an Axe Murderer that was filmed in San Fran. It stars fellow Canuck Mike Myers and he plays his Scottish dad who has some hilarious lines. Not sure if you have seen it but definitely worth checking out
It was very generous of Donna to have you for dinner and put you up for the night. She has a beautiful home. There are two types of jays in California: scrub jays and Steller's jays. The one you described sounds like a Steller's jay. They have a crest, and their heads are so dark they're almost black. They're in the crow family, and can make a lot of noise.
2000's: Don't take rides from strangers. Don't meet strangers from the internet. 2020's: Literally summoning strangers from the internet to give you a ride. And also staying in their houses 🙂 Who says the world is such a scary place!?
I know RU-vidrs who are extremely careful and avoid subscribers, who can be very creepy. I know one woman who publishes weeks in advance, unfortunately, so people can't figure out where she is travelling to next. Trolls.
I admire the fact that you are taking time to see California from the top down, but I think you missed it with regard to your understanding of the California vibe. The rag top Mustang is an American icon. Comparing it to your Tesla is like comparing apples to oranges. The sound of the engine alone creates a visceral reaction that you simply cannot generate with an e-vehicle. When driving the California coast in a Mustang convertible, top down, music pumping, wind in your hair, sun on your face -- there's really no comparison. And yes, I'm a SoCal beach girl and I own a red mustang convertible lol Enjoy the rest of your stay in the Golden State and safe travels :)
Love watching your American adventures through your Scottish eyes. Great video you guys and Kudos to Donna and her husband for representing American hosting!
Great video Shaun! Love that Mustang!! It was so kind of Paul and Donna to invite you to stay. ShThey have a lovely place. Looking forward to the next video. Have a great week ahead! God bless!
Highway 1 is such a fun drive!! Greetings from the edge of the Rockies in UT. We've been getting roasted in the heat here the last two months, and an oceanside trip seems like a dream at the moment. Enjoy! Maybe you'll plan a trip to the southwest or intermountain region at some point? We're not big on city attractions, but the landscapes are fantastic. And since you said you liked road trips 😉
Cherries are good this year. We've had sweet cherries all summer. Well, I used to go to group therapy upstairs from where Country Joe and the Fish played on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley
I took the PCH from LA to SF in 11 hours. First leg was great, but past Big Sur it was just dark and winding. I hope you guys took your time and enjoyed yourselves. 👍
The Mustang won't be anywhere near as fast as a Tesla. But I would way rather drive a Mustang GT with Performance Package and a manual. Not a big fan of convertible soft tops. The southern California sun will burn me up in about five minutes anyway (I have Scottish ancestry). San Diego is in line with Morocco, relative to the equator.
When I was in high school I had a Mustang ... except back then it was a weak 4-banger economy car that could barely maintain speed uphill 🤣 Loved it though. Had to figure out for myself how to drive a stick shift in order to get around.
It's so interesting to see the area where I grew up through the eyes of someone from somewhere else. I'm looking forward to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk episode. The big dipper is the best...
Any chance you ever walked across the old, elevated train trestle? I really don't know what we were thinking (I guess kids are sometimes a bit clueless about mortality).
This is a great post (like always). It's like I'm on this journey with you guys. What a Beautiful home. I think it's wonderful that you stayed at one of your fans homes.
Shawn: I love following your trip through California - I lived in Felton, just a short ride into the redwoods from Scots Valley during the late 1970s, early 1980s. Loved living there and it was a good place to raise kids, even with the hippy commune just up the road. Highway 1 is a great way to drive a mustang! I look forward to seeing your next adventure. Margie
@@Paulsapartment What big foot museum? There wasn't one there when I lived there. Did you go to the Mystery Spot in Scot's Valley? A very unique place to visit.
I didn't have time to take them to the mystery spot, but I believe that the big foot museum outside Felton on the south side has been there for a long time.
Loved this video! I wanted to say that the band poster you showed at the end? I've been to Peach's in Yellow Springs many times. We adore Yellow Springs! It's a fantastic town. I unfortunately never heard Paul's Apartment play live but I did recognize the band name as I live in Ohio.
I found you because I was looking up Scottish accents to *attempt* a Scottish accent in my next D&D campaign. I'm a walking Monty Python joke: A barbarian Rabbit person. All white. Yeah. Killer rabbit. Eric Marwood of .... get this... the Tomnadashin Mines. XD
What a great video! Thanks Donna for being a great example of American hospitality! 💓 America is beautiful with many beautiful and generous people, even though you won’t see that on the media. I’m also pretty sure we saw Paul’s Apartment at a county fair concert in Kentucky. Have fun on this trip.
Looks like you guys had a great time. I think that's wonderful. Donna and her husband seem lovely. I'm glad you figured out how to get all your bags in that trunk! You're only other option would have been to put a couple smaller bags in the backseat. Although backseat is a very generous term for that area lol. That black and blue bird you saw? It is a variation of a blue jay that you find only on the west coast. Most West Coast natives call them Mountain Jays. Blue Jays on the East Coast are just an even blue shade throughout. I only know this because I currently live on the West Coast in Oregon, but grew up in Wisconsin. And I remember being quite startled when I saw those black and blue birds. I had to ask one of the people who grew up here what they were. There are other subtle differences between the two sides of this country. I loved this blog. Especially being able to see both you and Teka enjoying yourselves so much. Looking forward to more vlogs. Cariños para Teka y tú Shaun. 😘🤗, ,😘🤗
@@caulkins69 I'm sure you're right. I live in a small town and they have their own vocabulary. It must be common in this area because when I asked Google for information about a "mountain Jay" it did offer me photos of that beautiful black and blue bird. 🤷🏻♀️ But thank you for telling me it's true name.
@@caulkins69 I looked up the Stellar's Jay, and is an entirely different variety! Please ask Google to show you a picture of a mountain Jay and you'll see what I mean. These mountain Jays are almost an indigo.
I made the same trip, SF to LA on Highway 1 in 1994. Overnight in San Simeon, SLO and Santa Barbara. First time in CA. It was very nice and folks very friendly. The good old days.
Excellent score! Only could be more iconic if it were an old Woody with surfboards, seeing as you're cruising the PCH. The reason for the cold wind - and icy seawater, should you go swimming - is the Humboldt Current. The current come up out of the West Pacific, around past the Aleutian Islands, down the PNW coast, and then down the California coast, dragging arctic cold with it. Also, lots of nutrients, making for some incredibly rich sealife.
So exciting, you got to drive a mustang down Highway 1, and stay with wonderful host like Donna and Phillip...quite memorable don't you think. Looking forward to the next part, Thank you for taking us along.
This was just delightful, thanks so much for sharing it. I felt like an unseen guest in Donna and Phillip's utterly charming home. That garden is spectacular and the attention to detail is apparent, as it all looks like it simply grew there on it's own. They seemed like truly lovely people and such excellent hosts, I'm glad you were all able to make this happen. :)
Best part of California. Hwy 1 in a Stang. The Santa Cruz Mountains have some very nice wineries too. My backyard for 40 years. Lived at the very top on Summit Rd. Miss it's beauty, but not Hwy 17!!
@@kateg7298 it is beautiful, but started getting too crowded and no public water on my property. Had my own well, but it dried up years ago. Had to pay for water truck to fill my storage tanks, and the threat of fires being a constant threat, it was time to move. Now I live on The Big Island and only have to worry about volcanoes and hurricanes! 🤪
@@lindakessler8768 I can't imagine trying to deal with paying for water! I moved from California to Galveston because California was so expensive 12 years ago. Now, we're seeing a massive influx of people from California, Oregon and Washington and our property taxes have tripled in 5 years. Oh, and the hurricanes lol.
@@kateg7298 we only pay for the electricity of the pressure pump and we’ll maybe 30 bucks a month! We are fortunate to have a great well that pumps 12 g/min. But if your phone n city water I hear it’s pretty expensive.
I've wondered WHY vloggers don't stay with ppl they meet that follow them.. that would be an entire new thing ppl should do. Ppl come to usa to get the American experience yet the only way to truly get that is to actually STAY will American family's , easy their foods, have them show you their favorite places, etc.
Tô be honest, as nice as most people are, it’s actually a dangerous thing to do. A small percentage are unstable as is the case with everything. Especially for women, it’s definitely not always advisable
@@shaunvlog I stayed at a "bed and breakfast" in Glasgow that was really just a spare bedroom in an older couple's house, but maybe you learn more than staying at a hotel? I felt like I was staying the night at my grandmother's house.
Just starting to watch this video. Great. The Mustang is a prize and powerful. Don't get carried away with the power. You could get speeding tickets. Highway Patrol watch for cars with power and are ready to jump.
What a gracious and lovely couple! My people are all over that area and I've always loved Scotts Valley. (Shaun, pretty sure Donna's not into axe-murdering. Just a hunch.)🙂
I'm so happy you got to see Scott's Valley and the beautiful Santa Cruz mountains! I grew up going to our cabin in MT. Hermon right next door. What cool people you got to stay with!
I have a silver Mustang and I love it! Donna's home is lovely especially with all the nature surrounding and wild life! Bbq looked delicious and the fruit yummy! Most Americans are just like Donna!
Wonderful couple and great video. Good thing it didn't turn out to be Kathy Bates from the movie "Misery". That would have been a completely different video. 😁
My wife and I drove the PCH in 2015 from LA to Crescent City. We noticed an inordinate number of Mustangs all along the trip. You must have fit right in!
Had to be done 😅 the Mustangs are beautiful and sound good, and tbh I’d probably have a 1960s one if someone was offering for a decent price, but knowing I could smoke literally any Mustang model 0-60 is quite satisfying 😜
How funny that you said that about your parent's place. I was literally thinking how much it made me think of your parent's home before you mentioned the same. I live in the Napa area in the mountains. Kind of between Napa and Sonoma County. I LOVE Santa Cruz area! So many wonderful childhood memories there. Camping and the town, boardwalk... and the redwoods! Such a cool area. Check out Big Basin!
What a pretty place Donna has🏞💕 ty Donna for taking such great care of two really great people, Shaun and his lovely Wife💖. Man we're missing out on all the fun! What a great time eatin cherries and surrounded by lots of God's great earth🌲🌳🐦 w/great company too!🌠💞💞 God Bless You All!
I love that you got to drive a red Mustang convertible in 101 in California. That is the coolest thing ever. And getting to stay at Donna's house. Wow!!!!
You're in my neighborhood... pardon me, "NEIGHBOURHOOD". I walk to Capitola Beach almost every day. The property that I live on has Giant Redwood trees, squirrels, coyotes, hummingbirds, Stellar's jays, and a plethora of other flora and fauna. I AM BLESSED 🙏 I AM GRATEFUL ❣️
You couldn't get much more American than a red Mustang convertible. This will be fun to watch! 🚗 Oh yes, Teka - convertibles are very hard on hair! There will be lots of untangling to do, but it's so worth it. Donna and her husband looked like fantastic hosts!
I used to have an MG Midget, and the wind blew on the back of your head and neck in that. I always tied my hair up in a bandana, but if it got cool you could really get a neck-ache.
