When I was in 6th grade, I nearly failed math. My parents promised me if I passed my final, I'd get an Acela ride. I did. Me and my dad had a lovely ride from DC to Baltimore on the Acela

You know DC is proud of their cherry blossoms....when they cover the lounge walls with pictures of them! The DC lounge really said "No natural light, here's posters of cherry blossoms, take it or leave it". The planting of cherry trees on the Tidal Basin originated in 1912 as a gift of friendship to the US from Japan, but the concept of them growing in DC began in 1885, as Mrs. Eliza Ruhamah Scidmore was a world traveler, writer, and diplomat, and became the first woman on the board of the National Geographic Society in 1892. Upon returning to Washington from her first visit to Japan, Eliza approached the US Army Superintendent of the Office of Public Buildings and Grounds with a proposal that sakura be planted one day along the Potomac waterfront, and in 1909, President Taft's wife received a letter from Eliza about the trees, and she agreed, though they had to get rid of the first batch of trees from Japan in 1910 because they had bugs. So they got another batch in 1912. ....just don't tell them that Branch Brook Park in Newark, NJ has the nation's largest collection of cherry blossoms! Branch Brook Park has 5,300 and eighteen different varieties! Branch Brook Park is the oldest county park in the US, and the cherry blossoms have been there since 1927 when Caroline Bamberger Fuld donated about 2,000 of them to the park after falling in love with them during a Japan trip. The park was first envisioned by Frederick Law Olmsted, Sr. and Calvert Vaux, the designers of Central Park, in 1867, and was formally created in 1895, with a redesign in 1900 by Frederick's sons John Charles Olmsted and Frederick Law Olmsted Jr. The Olmsted Brothers also worked on the grounds of Oheka Castle on Long Island (the inspiration for Gatsby's mansion), Piedmont Park in Atlanta, park systems in cities such as Birmingham, Cleveland, Portland, and Seattle, Fort Tryon Park in Manhattan, and multiple universities like Ohio State, Notre Dame, LSU, Johns Hopkins, and University of Florida.

After some cancellations during COVID I had a bunch of Amtrak credit. Among other things I made a couple of trips in first class on the Acela.. First class is definitely NOT worth the price, but it is nice. As a rather reserved person traveling alone, I particularly liked the 1-2 seating,. The food was tasty, and the New York lounge is outstanding.

French toast history: French toast was invented long before France even existed. The first known recorded recipe for French toast comes from Rome. The Roman author Apicius included a recipe similar to it called Aliter Dulcia ('Another sweet dish') in his cookbook titled "Cooking and Dining in Imperial Rome". For centuries, the French themselves called this dish "Roman Bread". In Le Viandier, culinary cookbook written around 1300, the French chef Guillaume Taillevent presented a recipe for "tostées dorées" involving eggs and sugar. The usual French name is pain perdu or "lost bread", reflecting its use of stale or otherwise "lost" bread.

Amtrak almost needs something like the Standard Premium seats that Avanti West Coast in the UK has. You get the first class seat, just without the meal for a substantial discount over a first class ticket.

I had a pretty fun experience riding Acela first class a few years ago. It was my first time riding Amtrak ever, so had to make it count. I didn't get to experience the Acela lounge in lieu of running from the metro stations (DCA airport and Union Station) to make the train. I rode from DC to Boston the whole way through and got two meals (2nd one came after leaving NYC). I got the stuffed french toast for breakfast and it was amazing. I got the stuffed chicken breast for lunch and it was decent, but I expected more from the pasta included with it. That's cool you can still get a meal in first class even when going to the next stop.

Awesome! Classy! I just rode Acela 1st class for the first time last week, from NYC to Baltimore. Surprisingly luxurious. Only complaint was the rails were a bit rough at Acela speed. My complimentary prosecco almost bounced off the tray table 😊

Look at the tomato, isn't it sad? It can't taste good. I see what you did there 😉 No comprendo (IYKYK)😆 I rode Acela last summer from BAL-DC just so the check it off the list. For the difference in price, I could never justify the extra cost compared to a Regional or MARC but it is what it is 🤷🏿‍♂️

Is the D.C. Metropolitan Lounge restricted to only Acela's First Class passengers? I'm taking this exact trip in a few months in Acela's Business Class
