My head cannon for this is that a ancient race of incredible builders (the player) in their hubris summoned a wither in a attempt to resurrect the dead, the wither rampaged throughout the lands and killed nearly the entirety of the builders world leaving only ruins, a scientists was infected by the wither sickness and knew that he would eventually die decided to transfer his consciousness into his golem companion, he succeeded but he was trapped under rubble of his old lab for thousands of years before a earthquake released him back into the world,, seeing his people gone and dead he decided that he had one goal, to rebuild. He began to get equipment and build a colony of a long distant relative of his race. He remembered that his leader had commissioned the construction of a inter dimensional portal to escape the wither with the only way to track this place down was with these magical “pearls” combined with blaze powder. One day he killed a mysterious tall black creature who dropped one of these pearls and he gained hope to meet his people again so he got the blaze powder and combined it with the pearl and began the hunt for the stronghold. After many days he found it completed the portal and went through only to be met by a furious dragon and more of these people. After killing the beast he lost hope and left, never knowing those mysterious beings were his people corrupted by the dragons magic
