I think Michael Seneschal might be onto something in that the 8GB RAM might be one of the limiting factors. Furthermore, with the fan spinning all the time it makes me think that the Macbook might need cleaning of the Macbook and reapplication of the thermal paste. I understand not everyone might be tech savvy enough to do a proper thermal paste cleaning / re-pasting but it would NOT be surprising if that (along with 8GB RAM) might be contributing factors for the less than desirable outcome. Just some food for thought.

Fun fact: The performance of the 2018 Air is actually a fair bit worse than the 2017 model as it has to constantly render 2x as many pixels due to the Retina display. My old 2017 Air wasn't great but it wasn't as bad as the one in this vid haha

Been using a 2018 MacBook Pro from work. Constantly running Figma, protopie, adobe CC (mostly indesign, illustrator, photoshop, lightroom and after effects), Final Cut; I’m doing A LOT of creative work. That thing was constantly chugging. Just got an M2 pro and my god what a difference.

Totally understand some of the creativity issues with an "older" laptop - but besides my current M1 Mac mini, I use a 2015 MacBook Pro - for almost all tasks (including sending emails, etc for work) the two computers respond exactly the same with none of the lag you mention. Granted - I could not perform any of the creative tasks you showed were hampered (useless on the intel) on my 2015 MacBook Pro - so I agree with you there. However, for most mundane tasks, a older MacBook is perfectly fine.

Absolutely, on my MacBook Air 2018 everyday tasks run perfectly. But I am on Mojave, plus maybe he running screen recording - it’s overload CPU/GPU massively on Air 2018, but anyone doing this.

Agree with you. As a science student, my Macbook Pro Retina 2015 inch having 16GB ram is more than enough for daily use, even opening many applications (word and excel, mainly, and some statistical software) and hundreds of safari/chrome tabs. Light Photoshop editing is just fine.

Interesting video! I was kinda surprised by how performance-lacking you found that 2018 MBA to be, although I suspect that Apple intentionally nerfed the performance of the last generation of Intel MacBooks to make their M-series Macs seem a lot faster by comparison. I'm fairly convinced that there is something wrong with that Mac, however, since it shouldn't perform so poorly. I'm still rolling a late-2013 15" MBP i7-4850QH 16GB of RAM with 2GB Nvidia discreet graphics here as my daily driver. Even though this old Mac is no longer supported by Apple, I'm still holding out on moving up to something newer since it still runs the apps I need and has some life left in it thanks to the OCLP project. It sure can't work with 4K video or HDR content but works for my photo editing and online work and isn't a complete slouch -- it even seems much faster than the 18'Air in the video. Of course, I will have to upgrade when Apple finally ditches all Intel support at the end of the transition period. Where it does fall flat on its face is with the very limited battery life, although being able to slap a 2TB NVMe drive in it is still a strong point.
@fedism
@fedism Год назад
When is this transition expected to be over?
@Yliannyx
@Yliannyx Год назад
While only Apple knows the real answer we can look at the way things stand and speculate. The 2019 Mac Pro is the only remaining product line that is Intel-based. It is expected we will see a new M-Series Mac Pro unveiled at this years WWDC23 event, or, perhaps a Special Event later in the year. It’ll then be on sale before the year is out and the Intel Mac withdrawn from sale at the same time. So late 2023 to early 2024 will see the hardware transition complete. As far as software support goes we can only guess. MacOS 15 (late 2024) will may be the last major revision to run on any Intel Mac with all support for security updates for those supported Intel Macs ending 2 years later in 2026. This will then complete the entire transition.

For everyone thinking something is wrong with the eBay macbook Air, it is because you haven't tried the M series computer yet. After you get used to new apple Silicon laptops, everything else just feels extremely slow, including the highest end gaming pc you can possibly build. The M series feels so responsive, just like using high-end phone, everything opens fast and responsive. I have an M1 Mac Mini, and also a 2018 Intel i5 with 16GB of RAM and I bounce between both of them depending on my location. Final Cut, Pixelmator, Capture One, all work fine on both setups. The 2018 MacBook is a little slower, but nothing prohibitive. Note that I definitely single-task… but that’s my preferred way of working regardless of computer (single-task focus). I think the issues you’re having are due to 8GB of RAM and running many apps at the same time.

Some of those tasks may be doable on apple silicon MBA's, but there's no way you're going to edit 4k on a 2018 MBA lol. And maybe 2 or 3 apps are okay, but having 5-7 apps running is of course going to slow down a 5 year old computer significantly.

it's crazy how maligned they were. Unless you're a serious power user, i don't know anyone who uses the function strip regularly. OTOH I use the touchbar to scrub videos, text prediction, change songs/language totally customizable. I'm going to miss using that. The butterfly, as well (i have a late 2018 model) has not been an issue for me either. I hate how squishy and unstable the scissor switches they reverted to feel in comparison. I don't use any dust covers, and I haven't had any problems with double registers at all. The technology may have needed to mature, but in a few ways, I think my macbook looks and feels newer/nicer than the newer apple silicon models Also, freaking bootcamp. Emulation/virtualization software has not gotten close to what I need and there are simply programs that you just straight up need windows for. No matter how much they tried to push rosetta 2, and the gaming porting kit, it hasn't taken off and most games and programs still need native windows to run properly.

They really should've kept the Touch Bar a long side the function keys on the newer generation Macs, and also putting them on the non pros to encourage developers to add features for the Touch Bar. While they're not utilized to their full potential, as someone who uses a Touch Bar MBP it's such a nice thing to have in some use cases, especially being able to skip ADs on RU-vid lol

Yeah! It definitely seems that what he wants is to make us use those purchase links for the MacBook Pro M2 and M3. I have been a Mac user since 2000 and I currently have a 2020 MacBook Pro with Intel that works incredibly well for editing video in DaVinci, FinalCut, the Adobe Suite works incredibly well for me, maybe it just doesn't work for gaming, but for that I have a PS5 console (which is made for that and I can still play with RemotePlay from the same macbook) In short, you have to live on something, right? click bait becomes a priority over being objective

the actual difference between m1 air and even the 2020 air was quite noticeable in terms of battery life and ofc the performance, at the time it totally blew me away coz a base m1 MacBook air was able to keep up with the 16 inch MacBook Pro with i9 in most workflows that weren't dependent upon gpu performance

What is the point then to use a 5 year old air and trying to struggle it thought such high quality footage, when it clearly isn’t meant for such tasks. Again, If you said you were going to use it for your work flow, you should have maybe tried comparing with a MacBook Pro from that time or something at least. I don’t want to argue with you, because I have watched you other videos and I enjoy them. I was trying to make a point that if you are choosing to switch back to an Intel MacBook for your work flow, atleast try with an Intel MacBook Pro. The air was useless for such tasks in 2018 itself. You did, most likely, run into slowness due to SSD speed and maybe lack of memory. We have upgraded, in the household, to M1, and I am getting ready for an upgrade to M2 for my work laptop (upgrade from M1 MBPro 13.3" to 16" is going to a game changer for me). Pointless video. I don't feel this comparison is fair or appropriate in any way: a 14" MacBook Pro can't be compared with an Intel MacBook Air 2019, which was an entry-level device designed for one-core daily tasks (and it's still fine for that, I got one of this besides my MBA M1 2020). A much more interesting comparison would be between a MBP 14" and MBP 15" from 2018 (both of them were conceived for video editors like you). And that argument leads me to my second gripe with this video (with almost 80 % of tech youtubbers, actually): bro, the vast majority of us watcher don't do video-editing and don't care about that. And that doesn't translate into a 'light' use case, whatever that means: I don't do video-editing with my M1 MBA and sometimes this (otherwise amazing) device struggles to keep up with my work.

I still use my 2013 21.5” i5 iMac, 2020 27” Intel i9 iMac, & I use my 2021 16” M1 Max MBP on the go. My MacBook’s better for video editing. My 27” iMac is better for music production. Both seem the same. Performance is still very good. I boot off external NMVe drives with SK Hynix & Samsung 980 Pro 2TB SSD’s with both. My 21.5” iMac is still great because I put a new SSD drive & added the max amount of RAM but can’t handle heavy, heavy Logic Pro or Final Cut . Intel MacBook Air’s are good for using internet only. Ultimately you should know by now that old Intel MacBook’s suck.

Hi Jerry, I’m a new subscriber but I’ve watched a number of your videos. I know this video is “2 weeks” old at this point, but I’d appreciate any advice you can give, as I have only a couple of days left to return a Mac to Apple for a full refund. I’m coming from a 2012 13” inch non-retina MacBook Pro hooked up to a Thunderbolt Display, and a 2010 27” iMac. I do graphic and web design work, some screencast video work for clients and a lot of very large spreadsheet work managing e-commerce datasets. After a long deliberation of what new Apple Silicon Mac to buy, and on the strength of two of your videos from last summer, on April 1 (perhaps foolishly 😊) I decided to buy an Apple refurbished 2020 27” Intel iMac, 16GB/2TB, i7, 5500XT with 10GbE, for about a 40% discount. Great machine, but given that it’s 2023, I’m wondering if I made a mistake, and should instead get a refurbished M2 MacBook Air 8C/10G, 24GB/1TB, for $200 less than the iMac, though hooked up to my Thunderbolt Display, with a couple of extra dongles for now, and a monitor mount for Continuity Camera. I’ll need a laptop for remote work this summer, (I painfully used my 2012 for the same work last summer) but I’d want the new one to only be a secondary machine afterwards, and still have desktop, maybe an M2 Max Studio if it comes out. I only have the budget for one machine right now though. Or should I keep the Intel iMac (for 6 or 7 years) and stretch a bit more to get a lower spec M1 MBA as well? 🤷‍♂️ A bit of FOMO either way. Thanks for your informative videos, and for any advice you can give.

100% I would return and get a refurb M2 or even an M1 MacBook Pro 14 or 16. You will be happier in the long run. For the display, I dont have experience trying to get the old TB display to work so it may be tricky. Honestly, unless you want a separate desktop computer for some reason, the MacBook Pro is probably more than enough. Good luck.

Definitely something wrong with that machine. I also have a 2019 Macbook Air (16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD) and while it's noticeably worse than my 14" M1 Pro MBP, I've nowhere as bad as I'm seeing in this video. (apps bouncing ad nauseam and not even opening, several seconds lag while typing ? come on.. ). Yes, the fans do pick up quickly, and you can hear them, but this is easily mitigated by running the laptop in "Low Power Mode" which btw. does not nerf the performance at all (e.g. it caps the peak CPU speed from 3.5 GHz to about 2.8, but by doing this, the sustained multicore performance is actually a bit better, as it does not thermal throttle as easily).
@MrLocsei

p.s.: and to be fair, fan is not even audible like most of the time, during light stuff like watching youtube videos, or browsing the web. Running on the latest updates ./ Ventura.
