I bought a 2022 Beta 500 RR-S in April after getting a chance to ride eight different models during a Beta ride day at my local dealer. After my first ride I noticed liquid had dripped into the truck bed on my way home. It turned out to be a coolant leak on the lower right side of the engine. My Beta dealer made the repair under warranty. On my second ride I got the "yellow" fuel injection warning light, so I made my way back to the truck; loaded it up and delivered it to the dealer. Again, they made the repair under warranty and this time the issue was the coolant temperature sensor (mounted just behind the radiator). On my third ride the injection warning light came on again. By now I was very disappointed as the bike had spent more time at the dealer than in my garage. When I picked it up from the dealer, they told me they had to do a program reset. Since then, I've ridden it as hard as I could with no issues. I've also reverted back to doing basic fundamentals that involve very slow riding, which tends to keep the radiator fan running, and still haven't had any more issues. A big thank you to my dealer as they made the repairs, didn't look at me funny and treated me well.

I've owned a DRZ400S (two actually), DR650, CRF300L Rally, CRF450L (which you considered buying, we spoke on the phone about it), and then a 2021 KTM 500 EXC-F Six Days I bought with only 60 miles on it. All these bikes have pros and cons. The KTM started having issues with less than 100 miles on it with a CEL coming on. I couldn't get a straight answer from the dealer about it. I tried replacing stuff but was then told I need to buy an aftermarket ECU to make it run right. Unacceptable for what is literally the most expensive dual sport. I recently purchased a 2022 Beta 430 RR-S and my initial impressions are very good. They're $1,000 less than the comparable KTMs and are well-sorted off the showroom floor. No need to mess with fueling. Beta USA is also great at taking care of their customers. Shameless plug I've done videos and shared my thoughts on all these bikes on my shitty channel.

Gorgeous looking bike. I love my Husky FE501. I changed from 14:48 to 13:50 gearing and now no more stalling or flame outs. Can still do 100 kmh on the road to link the trails. So much torque in these big bore singles. Very addictive. No Beta dealers near me which would be my only concern. I’d love to see more videos of your 500 on the trails. Cheers

Great review! I have the '21 500 RR-S and absolutely love it. I also tend to ride with the "rain/tamed" fuel mapping, especially in slow stuff. The fast map is pretty aggressive; I couldn't see myself ever feeling like its underpowered. It's an awesome feature to be able to switch between fuel map settings on the fly. Click the switch and you're set! I have had no issues at all with my bike. The electrical issues you mentioned were resolved on newer bikes (to my knowledge) and no longer a potential problem. Also, getting parts has been pretty painless. Anytime I've done mods/upgrades, I ordered the parts online and they arrive quickly. The Beta dealer in San Diego was quick to turn around my bike when I upgraded my suspension. Stock suspension was great, but I'm a big guy and wanted the springs (front and rear) matched to my riding weight. Me and the bike will be at the San Diego ADV Rally in November, you're welcome to take the bike for a spin if you are there again this year.

Cool bike, nice review as always, Ian. Back in the '90's, I had a Beta Zero 260 two - stroke trials bike. Rode and competed in the local trials club. Other than liquid cooling and spoked wheels, completely different from your Beta in every single way... however, good to see a bike with the same name , and hear positive experience.

I love my 2021 Beta 500 RRS. It's been a great bike so far. And I think the newer dual injected motors might have that extra punch you mentioned you were missing. Mine is very strong, especially in the "normal mapping" mode. And they re-did the electrical in 2020, and it seems to have fixed those electrical gremlins. I've had zero issues with mine.

For what it’s worth my ‘22 Honda 450RL does not flame out. Dealer network and reliability made it the choice for me. One guy I’ve run into on the trail dumped his Beta because of poor quality, but I can’t speak to that personally. I know I have never had any issues with my Honda and I’ve ridden it very hard on and off road. It’s a bit heavy but I do just fine in single track here in Colorado. Road it in Moab and it’s a dream in the sand. 1500 mile oil changes and someday a valve adjustment at 16k miles. I change oil after every off-road single track weekend but I probably don’t need to. The clutch is a bit stiff after a couple hours in single track, that would be my only complaint. I’m 6’2” 220 and I don’t really care about it being heavier than the lightest options out there, way lighter than my africa twin, durability for me equals no worry about walking back to the truck through the mountains. Not trying to knock any other brands I just want people to know Honda seems to have made a tweak to the computer and solved the flame out issue.

Awesome review Ian. Short but sweet. I’ve owned my 16 300 RR since new, still in love with it over 200hrs later. I would really love it if you purchased a brand new 430 RRS to test and compare. The 430 and the 390 are my favorite Beta 4 strokes. I’ve ridden all of them and those are the stand outs to me. I think the 430 will give you that punch your looking for and still be a tractor down low.

One of the nice things about Beta, is any "year" complaint, they seem to address it the following year. The definitely listen to their customers. My 22 came with a Diaphragm Clutch, which is a single finger pull clutch. Great! I was giving mine a few months on the 15 tooth, but I'll absolutely be moving to the 13 tooth sprocket. 15 is too tall for nasty PNW wet and technical stuff.

Fuel range to empty is very important with a dual sport bike. What is your maximum observed range with the stock tank? Of course modifications will effect this. My 2016 Husqvarna 501S would travel 120 miles max. Modified for power it would drop to 85 miles. My 2021 KTM 500 XCF-W is considerably more fuel efficient and will go 140+ miles. I attribute the difference to the lighter weight (235 lbs dry), and closed loop fuel injection system that utilizes a Lamba sensor in the head pipe. This latest FI system is much better in regards to low speed stalling, but not perfect. Adding more fuel will eliminate stalling but at the cost of maximum range. One can always add a larger capacity fuel tank but then you add weight and bulk high on the chassis that destroys single track handling. I find that the 140 mile range of the stock tank is enough for most of my riding and lets me enjoy the big single in very steep and challenging terrain. A Rekluse auto clutch and LHRB are expensive but worthwhile additions that help eliminate stalling and add control, allowing me to run with the 300’s in the gnar.
@elgringoec
@elgringoec Год назад
That 501 of yours did rip, and it fueled well, I had great control of it, never hesitated or felt like stalling. That must have been after you modified it for power. Handled well, too.

Mike , the predominant bike around here TN - NC is a 250 - 300. I ride a 350. Even beginner trails are difficult in most places and a heavy weight big boar engine will only set you back or get you into trouble. If you only plan on going on fire roads or UTV areas then a big boar is more at home there.

You have to replace the plastic oil pump gear right away with steel one. Also I'm no fan of the plastic subframe when compared to my Husky subframe which I know can also and will break. And one should mention that Beta's seem about 3/4 of the size of KTM/Husky which can be a good thing. It was just a surprise when I was looking. But otherwise I would have a Beta sitting right next to my Husky501. Cheers!

The only issue I have had is that the rear right indicator is starting to melt due to the location of the silencer. The plastic gearing for the oil pump should be replaced at 100hrs according to the service manual. I wish that Beta would offer the Rrs model here as our bikes are enduro versions but still street legal.

@@aj13243 So far the bike has been perfect although I have just bought a Husky 701 which has longer legs. I'll probably use the husky for adv riding and the Beta for dual sport.

I own an opened up 2017 FE 350. I was on the fence with a Beta 390 but my buddy that sold em didn’t call back. Aesthetically, I’d say the Beta’s look the best. I was fortunate at the time and remapping. My bike was under $100 and change in the end cap on the exhaust was about 150. Today there is a service that will unlock a KTM map for around $125. Changing the endcap is still around $150. This provides nearly the same amount of horsepower as an FMF exhaust. Just wanted to clarify because it doesn’t cost thousands of dollars to do this modification. Still off the shelf at the Beta wins as a no hassle, buy it and ride a bike. The biggest? I have regarding a beta has always been the electrical. And that’s the little crazy thing that can leave. You stranded out there on Long trails.

Sounds great, but doesn't it have some crazy high maintenance service intervals, like an oil change every 500-1000 miles or something? That would end up being a killer for me.
@jeffloucks2120
@jeffloucks2120 Год назад
All bikes in this category are the same. Performance motors with low oil volumes require frequent changes depending on your use.
@user-ii9dw1mq5w

Actually the Beta has separate engine and transmission oil reservoirs, each holding 750+ cc’s of oil. So oil change intervals could safely be extended IMO over comparable other brand bikes.

I just purchased a 2023 500 RRS and have ridden it 3 times a total of 186 miles. I’ve owned many bikes in my racing career this is my first dual sport this is by far the best bike out of the box I have ever ridden truth it does everything I put it thru perfectly I’m not even going to change the stock gearing it’s a bit tall in first but I ride mostly single track and have no issues going anywhere with no clutch abuse. Only 2 changes I’m making is a softer seat and a longer kickstand

@@pnwrider8346 yes I did try the 390 actually has the most usable power very friendly bike. But the 500 is so much smoother easy riding and especially for hwy riding it’s always nice to have more power with little effort. I left the stock gearing for everything I ride mainly single track and it just does it effortlessly. I don’t believe I have reved the bike past 6k yet

Well time to update my last comment. I just hauled the Beta out to a riding spot about 30 miles from the house and it would not start. No matter what I checked, neutral, kickstand, kill switch etc. No luck. So back to the dealer when they open. Do I like my Beta? Not really. I don't think I would ever buy another one. Well to be honest, I know I will not buy another one.

The plastic oil pump gear is a non-issue. It's rated for a specific amount of hours and should be replaced after those hours, but it's the same amount where you would also do a top end rebuild so the motor comes apart anyway and the gears are super easy to replace, takes like 1 minute to do if the side cover is off anyway. On top of that the two gears cost 2$ each, while replacing them with steal gears costs around 100$ or more. All Betas have had that plastic oil pump drive and it's ever only been a problem for people that didn't replace the part after the specified amount of time. The electrical system however has always been a problem on Betas. The way it's done on my 2011 model is absolutely rediculous to me as a mechanical and electrical engineer. The newer models seem much better in this regard, but still, problems like faulty or badly designed regulator-rectifiers come up from time to time. But even those problems are fixed (I think) in the newest models. Mechanically Betas are absolutely great bikes. Power wise I think you estimate it quite low. It's probably closer to 55 or 60 hp, as 500s have been for quite some time. Heck, new 450s are over 60hp already most of the time. Otherwise great video, cheers :)
@EricBanner571
@EricBanner571 2 года назад
Do you stick to the oil change intervals or extend them? What sort of hours before replacing the top end or can that also be extended. I have a nicely set up DRZ400E but looking at a modern alternative that is lighter, efi and 6 gears but would be put off if i had to change the oil every couple of rides.
@Blockbuster2033
@Blockbuster2033 2 года назад
@@EricBanner571 I do extend the service intervalls. Oil should be changed every 30 hours on the newer Betas, that can be extended at least twice, if you don't run it to hot. It could probably be extended even way more. The top end and oil gears should be done every 90 hours. The top end can be extended a lot. There are people out there that have had their first top end rebuild at over 1000 or so hours. I personally know a guy who did a similar time on a 2004 KTM 450 EXC without doing anything to the motor apart from occasionally changing the oil. For a new Beta if you don't do hard enduro but instead use it as a light adv bike then you could probably get away with changing the oil and filter and opening the left side cover to change the oil pump gears every 90 hours. However I would strongly recommend putting a cush drive hub in the rear wheel with such a use case. That also greately protects the motor from wear and makes the ride more pleasant. And fit a fan to the radiator to be sure to keep it cool if you do slow technical stuff. Other than that you should be fine. Does anyone know why Beta separates the Transmission and Engine Oil? I remember Honda did this with the CRF450X (05-17) but they ditched it on the gen 2 models. 99% of motorcycles have one cavity for the oil, why change that?
@philippday9195
@philippday9195 2 года назад
its just a little bonus feature... no clutch fibers messing with engine oil, and a slight change in clutch feel using a trans oil instead of motor oil... all in all not better, just different. I like that i can basically go 3:1 oil changes vs transmission changes

Ok, maybe not thousands (plural) just a thousand. The Beta 500 runs perfect right off the showroom floor and it has more power than the KTMUSKY and is a better dirtbike. Having the plate is just icing on the cake. 95 % of the riding I do on my 500 is on the trail and that's what this bike is built for.
