As a brand new player in this space, it was imperative that we eliminate as many barriers as possible to introduce easier, faster, and yes, even more secure WiFi to our customers. We knew that some would balk at the idea of cloud-only, but if you look around, much of the industry is going more cloud instead of less. We have built our cloud from the ground up with modern, scalable, redundant, and lightweight technologies that will guarantee our cloud to be available throughout the lifetime of our products. Our cloud gives our customers a plug-and-play solution that eliminates the hassle, overhead, and cost of setting up and maintaining an on-site controller. We truly believe that once you have tried our cloud platform, you will never look back. That being said, while we feel that most customers will be well-served by our cloud, we have mentioned already that we are working on an on-premise solution for those that demand it. However, as we have done with our Access Point and Switch products, we do not want to release it prematurely. We believe that our customers deserve an on-premise solution that works just as well as our cloud.

My 5 cents into the cloud debate: I welcome anyone to add to my comment, but I think that the general sentiment is that cloud services are vulnerable to attacks, service interruptions, and data mining, etc. Being able to run a platform on a local device, and keep it contained, and being able to manage it completely from a local device, gives you a feeling of security and safety, puts the IT people in charge of their network, not the cloud system, a locally contained management system, to manage users and devices with the ability to run a VPN server to provision remote access to devices and network services, is what we want. Most people who manage networks, I'd say, are tired of having to track all the damn cloud logins, login addresses and the concern of getting their profile data mined for marketing purposes.

@@Soccero07 It depends, but mostly yes. Most businesses that are putting these into their drop ceilings - you have to remember, they have a few - or floors of them. It costs a lot of money for a company to come out and install those. Lot's of places have older 8-10+ year (or older) equipment. It's already a pain for most businesses to change, especially when it's still working. In the end, they will need to have value for money vs. competition (eg. UniFi) or features vs. the competition. Hard for me to see where they will be able to provide that, considering. I could be wrong - waiting for Lawrence Systems to keep us in the know 🙂

@@LAWRENCESYSTEMS I had a chat with their VP Business Development and they are planning on adding a local controller in the future. For me, the cloud controller makes sense for now, as one of their main selling points is that they do not need a relatively expensive controller in small networks.
@williamp6800
@williamp6800 11 месяцев назад
@@TheLintensCompany you don’t need a “relatively expensive controller” with Unifi. You can run the controller software on pretty much anything except your kitchen sink. From a Raspberry Pi to a VM or a container. And if you’re not using the captive portal and aren’t interested in gathering statistics, you don’t even need to keep it running. So you can run it on your laptop if you want. Fire it up when you need it. Shut it down when you don’t. If they think “local controller” means an expensive piece of hardware that you have to buy, they’re still missing the boat.

There are serious problems with this strategy. UniFi really has this nailed with a mix of local/cloud. The problem with a solution of cloud only is that there are environments we interact with that are not direct internet-facing (they VPN to an out-of-country home office/etc) and while using cloud works.. kind of... it defeats the point of what they are accomplishing for their warehouse. Cloud only management creates a narrow fail-footprint. This is no good for many of my clients.

Different networks by passwords looks cool. Not really needed, but feels good. However, if Unifi adds this as well, then this advantage is gone. There isn't really a competition with UI's ecosystem, it's simply far more advanced and one single good product won't move customers to a new brand

The cloud option should have been just that, an option and not the sole launch solution for the controller. Oof. Yeah, the controller itself may be more reliable operating as a cluster of VMs in a datacenter but we all know the least reliable part of any network is that connection to the outside world. The internet drops and when that happens no access to the controller. The cloud is good for other things, just not management of end point network devices.
