I Switched To A Safety Razor!

I switched to a safety razor! After using cheap disposable razors and cringing at the cost of cartridge razors, I decided to try safety razors and I'm sold! They're not for everyone, but I really like them. They are much more aggressive than disposable razors and require a light touch and finesse to get a close shave without irritation, but if you do it right, you get a real close shave at a low cost and lest's face it. They're pretty darn cool too. Nothing says retro cool like a chrome plated solid brass razor like your grandpa used.

Hey guys! If you're interested in getting into wet shaving, I did an updated review on the Van Der Hagen Traditional Shave Set for 2019. It's inexpensive and pretty darn good! Go check it out! --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-tlM_kNPlPs0.html

You can sharpen/strop cartridge razors using a leather strop, denim or just by using your forearm. There are people re-using their cartridge razors for over a year. You could use the same technique on safety razors as well although the savings wouldn't be anywhere near as much since safety blades are much cheaper. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ADaRIqy0Dc.html

I was given one from my mom for Christmas when I was 16 back in the 70's. Along with some old spice. (Still have that bottle with some of it in it still!) Had no instructions, no one to teach or guide me. I used that same razor all of my life. I do miss it now but its in good hands. My son turned down my offer to buy him a top of the line electric. He wanted mine! Now he's in the navy and it is his!

@Mike Dunning does happen if you are unfamiliar with it. So for me that means a couple times in the first 2 weeks. But when you know how to do it, the chance of cutting yourself is really low. Also if it cuts you, the pain is so minor you barely feel anything. Those cartridge razors I used to use tug like hell, everytime shaving is a torture, even if it leaves no blood at all. So I don’t care if I lose 5 drops of blood a year with a safety razor.

I'm 63. I use my late father's Gillette safety razor made sometime in the mid 1950s, which he used every day for decades. It works GREAT, and the blades are CHEAP, but man oh man, do I get a GREAT shave every time. Modern cartridge razors are ridiculously expensive and don't shave as well. There's no reason to spend so much money when an old fashioned, double edged safety razor with ordinary bar soap will leave you with a smooth shave every time. I shave in the shower, with the water turned off of course after lathering up. The mess is all rinsed away when I rinse off, the water is already hot, the Dial soap is already all over my beard, and it works GREAT. Welcome back to the past, young men, don't throw money away on gimmick razors.

I made the switch from the 5 blade cartridge razor (Harry’s) to a safety razor. I’m able to get a closer shave with that razor compared to Harry’s that I used for 3 years. Also buying more blades for that razor is a lot cheaper too. With Harry’s no matter how many passes I went through wasn’t able to get the hair off near my Adam’s apple. With the safety razor, I was finally able to get the hair off completely shaved with a couple passes. I’m glad I made the switch.

It seems to me that the disposables used to be good, but now they angle the blade so flat that it's impossible to cut yourself, but they'll do one shave but not two. And the multiblades are the same, one shave and then they clog up or something. Annoying. So, I (an oldtimer) decided to get a safety razor just like I had 20 yrs ago. And, lo and behold, everything is good. I don't have any trouble with cuts, shaving is completely easy, the single blade doesn't clog up, you can use it multiple times, .... definitely a win.

Good deal John. As you said, the big companies want to gouge the consumer with multiblade cartridge razors that don't even provide comfort much of the time. With a safety razor, you can shave daily if you like. No more dreading shaving. I switched to DE shaving about 3 years ago, but progressed to straight razors and shavettes. I wonder if you've also discovered shaving soap and a brush as well. Much more comfortable and certainly affordable. While many find that this turns into a costly hobby, it doesn't need to be. I got my first brush for around $15 on Amazon. You can find products at the local store, though the selection is limited. I also shave my head. There's a world of traditional wet shavers out there, and many groups on social media to get together. Welcome to comfort and savings.

you can flip the blade and therefore 4 edges from one blade, if just starting out, get an quality adjustable razor and this will allow you to start with less aggressive blade reveal and progress to a more aggressive razor as you get used to it (best cheaper quality razor for a beginner, IMHO Rockwell 6c -- having shaved for years I bought the Rockwell 6S, no negative reviews and I think this is my go to lifetime razor!)

I couldn't agree more. I switched several years ago and don't regret it. The blades are cheap and it's a close comfortable shave. A vintage Gillette flare tip is inexpensive and will last you a life time. But I have found a good shave soap also makes a big difference. I usually used Arko with a brush, now I'm using a product called Cremo shave soap. Use as directed or seen on RU-vid. Blades are "generally" the same, but if you start using a safety razor get an assortment package from "Try a blade" and see what works for you.

I just started wet shaving and it definitely has a learning curve. What has helped me is using the the bar on the safety razor. I thought about the name and the bar is the safety part of the safety razor. I lean or press the bar (that is in front of the blade) against my skin, then find the blade angle. Other common sense steps need to betaken such as making sure the face is very wet, (make sure face is very wet before adding shaving cream) or a pre-shave oil is used before adding the shaving cream. I love shaving this way, hope this was helpful

Was hoping to switch from Cartridge razors to Electric shaver until a Barber highlighted to me the level of razor bumps on my face (thanks to the flourescent lights too). It was then I figured how ignorant I was thinking the cartridge razors I've been shaving with, in a short time turn dull, but havent felt it. What I failed to observe is the triple blades do the trick but think the razor is still good to go. Think of slicing a potato using a grater that has one blade and another that has more than one. The latter may seem efficient but it actually rips the potato as they turn dull compared to the dullness of the single slicer which is what happens to the skin. Been a year since I switched to DE and not only I save quite a sum, I also get to protect my face skin most importantly.

A hint for less irritation for people with sensitive skin. I don't use shaving creams or gels but buy Tea Tree conditioner and use that both for my face and my head. It's unbelievable. Leaves the skin feeling fresh and rash free especially for those of us shaving our heads. Highly recommended!

Switched about 3 years ago. There is no going back. I really don't understand how the hell cartridge razors got so popular.

An additional plus about these safety razors is the fact it is less plastic waste.

Picked one up at my Dollar Tree just to check i out.. Came with the razor and 5 pack of blades.. I usually use walmart brand 4 blade disposable blades.. Will try this out and if i like it i will invest in a better razor and blades.

Those are not “novelties”. My dad had one of those, my grandfather had a straight razor; they passed on but their shaving “novelties” still work.

Machined brass? Anything you could have bought today for less than twenty dollars at your local grocery store is going to be cast zinc (pot metal). All the same, I'm glad you are enjoying the shave.

Heck I have a couple of those laying around out in a box I have of my dad and grandpa's old things they use to take camping. I've used some of the unused razors to strip decals and crap off old cars I've been working on. I think I'll bring in the nice gold one my grandpa had in and give it a try.

Try sourcing Japanese blades branded Feather, those are the sharpest I have ever used. This razor requires training to use so if you try it long enough, you will know how to. All men in poorer nations obviously use these thanks to the cost, but, the risk of getting minor nicks is high for a novice

Been shaving with a safety razor for years, cant go back, cartridge razors just wont cut it. Find a razor you like, a variety of blades, some decent cream or soaps and start enjoying your shaves.

I have been getting shave rash for about 20 years using gillette mach 3. Then about 6 months ago I tried safety razor. Best thing I every did!!!!!!! I have never seen my neck skin in such good condition, I was a little bit emotional (for a rugby player:)). The shave rash had been an issue for so long and now it is completely gone!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a tip from you from an older guy. Disposable razors with more than 2 blades are a waste of money. And no, single blade safety razor it is no better. Another thing is, and here most of the men are choosing wrong, is that you have to use a type of blade according to your beard density. Hard blade for thick beard, medium blade for medium density beard and so on. For example, Bic is making hard blades, Gillette medium and Wilkinson soft. The rest, comes with every user character, financial possibilities, type of skin, whatever.

Safety Razors are getting more popular in the UK ,for a number of reasons. Men's Grooming is getting more popular . Safety Razors are more Greener through plastic pollution awareness, Plus also getting more popular due to the TV Drama "Peaky Blinders". So much so at The Peaky Blinder festival in Birmingham ,there were two stalls selling Antique and new Safety Razors

Nice!! They are great!! But I doubt that one your holding is stamped brass. Most likely Zamic. Don't chip it or have the zamic exposed because it will crumble after a while.

You did not mention which brand of blade you bought. The only $7 per 100 that is any good (for me) is Dorco ST-300. For a couple of dollars more you can get Astra, which is generally considered to be among the best. They seem to work very well in almost any razor for most users. Try a true vintage Gillette or Star from Ebay; then you'll know what cool is.
