Just came across your channel and I'm finding great content, thank you! Do you have any videos on how to teach the quiet command? I have a gsd/Mal mix that barks at any person or dog who comes close to us so we can't take her out too often to socilize/desensitize her, which then becomes a cycle. I've tried treats and leash corrections with no results as her drive takes over most of the time.

Hello there, regarding the mental stimulation part, does it lower if the heel command is learned to be couple of inches away from the hip? I have a 6m.o. and shes doing wonderfully, but my heel is not (either done by her or enforced by me) completly touching my hip but more of a walk near me Any reason to change that into what i see in the vid?
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger Год назад

Eventually you'll have to overcome that. Can't just avoid distractions forever and say the dog can "heel"
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger Год назад
I understand. My assessment would be that the dog is not good with heel if that’s the case 🙏🏼 If your dog can’t heel perfectly with a toy or ball rolling by, they’re definitely not ready for distractions that are live! 🙌🏻
@killa-ma-jig7281
@killa-ma-jig7281 Год назад
@@AndyKrueger The reason they're not ready for distractions is probably because they aren't around many distractions. The more distractions, more frequently, the better is what I have found. Same with off leash training. Leash training and offleash training are separate things. People wait to off leash train until the dog is fully trained on the leash which is a big mistake imho My dog does better offleash than onleash. Luckily I didn't wait. He also had many things that distracted him. Luckily I didn't shy him away from those things otherwise he probably never woulda overcome it.

If your dog gets distracted easily on a walk then you need better obedience and then it won't matter what's around to them because your commands are top tier. It's a values system, your voice has a certain amountIof worth and that rabbit or squirrel or etc has a value also and so you need to train them that your voice is worth more than anything else at all. It's not the dog because I have a malinois and a yellow lab and a pitbull and they all listen the same. My commands are worth more than anything else to all three of them but it takes dedicating your time to training them . You can't just get a dog and then that's it and your the picture perfect american family lol you have to make sure you know what the dog your getting needs.

Been working hard on the engagement exercises since joining Patreon. Been attempting focus on the walk for a long time. Embarrassed to say, quite frankly. Changed up my tactics once I started watching your videos. I know I didn’t make training as fun as I should have because I would get a bit frustrated. I have changed that, too. I am trying to make myself high value but I haven’t yet convinced him that is always the case. I definitely messed that up in the beginning. His leash manners are getting better. What should I focus on the most? I just started using a tug this morning heeling in the yard. Was going to try it on a walk this evening. Still working on engagement with the tug. If he could,he would just take it and lay down. I have a long leash on him so he can’t. Still doesn’t seem to get the play concept. He’ll bring it to you a couple times and then just wants to take it away and hold it in his mouth. I keep trying to convince him I’m more fun! Ha!

In case you wanted an update on the park walk. Total fail. My husband went with us and he doesn’t go a lot. Hondo wouldn’t calm down or focus at all. All he would do is worry about which direction my husband went if he wasn’t right with us. Even if I stood in front of him he would look around my legs. And whine and whine. He does this if my husband has him and I move away, also. He had been doing much better the last couple of times we, meaning Hondo and myself. Put him in his crate when we got home.@@AndyKrueger

I get what you mean, but let’s be honest, they’re not actually children. Treating them as such can be very detrimental to them (by my standards, not yours). Would you think of a child as a dog? I hope not! So why think of a dog as a child?

Try to get kind of motivation with a backyard bred mutt. This isn’t realistic unless you have a well bred working breed.

Given the dog's ears, he is insecure and mistakes have been made in teaching.
@AndyKrueger
@AndyKrueger Год назад
This is a very common misconception. I understand how you could think that, but you are reading the dog incorrectly. For example, most people think a dog wagging his tail means ‘happy!’ BUT, that same tail wag could mean the dog is about to attack something. Just bc it CAN mean happy, doesn’t mean it ALWAYS means happy. Ears back CAN mean a dog has been over pressured, but also CAN mean the opposite. There are many LEVELS when it comes to one’s ability to READ a dog. Another example and some food for thought; a person laughing CAN indicate that they are experiencing joy, BUT, a lot of people laugh when they feel nervous or uncomfortable. They layman could see the laugh and think, that person must be happy!! But in reality they could be on an awkward date and feel wildly uncomfortable!

No I’m not a breeder. Also just some advice, if you are looking for a puppy and lead with the question ‘how much?’ 99.99% of breeders won’t even respond.
