I'd also be really interested in this, do you usually go in with a structured lesson plan or do you allow the students to lead with what they wish to learn and then adapt from there?

@@ShaneGodliman Hello Shane, yes this is the next logical step after watching this video. I' truly dont know where to start. Even as a creative manager, this is still pretty foreign to me. Help :P In the meantime ill set up my location for reliable classes.

Currently learning French on iTalki for about a year as a student and really enjoying it. Concernig the algorythm I would agree, it sometimes is a bit unpredictable, and especially when loading a lot of profiles, some seam to reappear at the bottom again for no particular reason. But when you reload the page, profiles seem to appear very randomly so one profile that shows up at the top might appear a few pages later next time. This applies to the desktop version, haven't used the app much as I think it needs some polishing. Overall I like this platform but again this comes from a student‘s perspective.

Hi Shane, from another Shane! Seems we have a few things in common… I’m called Shane, I’m British, I speak Spanish and I’ve just become a community English tutor on italki :D I’ve also had some ideas floating around in my head for a few years about creating a youtube channel and podcast content and, for whatever reason, I’ve been putting it off. Maybe the tutoring will give me the kick up the arse I needed :D Just wanted to say, thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s really encouraging for those of us starting out. Especially the cons (forewarned is forearmed!) I’ve just had my first lesson request so naturally I’m a little nervous, but excited to get started. Can I ask, when you started out, were you working another job and, if so, how did you find balancing the teaching alongside it? I ask because I work full time right now so I think it might be quite challenging at times! Cheers :)

Hey Shane! Great name haha 🙌🏽 when I started on italki I was kind of transitioning between things so I was doing some bar work and some other teaching but then not long after the lockdowns started so I was a bit more limited at times with my choices haha. But ultimately I decided to focus on teaching English because I couldn’t balance the other stuff as well

Great video! Thank you for sharing! I had a few questions I was hoping you could answer. Does italki record, monitor and or critique your tutoring sessions with students? Can you turn down gigs like for the example you made with the kids? And lastly are tutors allowed to dress casually and even where a cap on their head if they wanted?

Thanks :) Do you have any tips for teaching beginners? How can you hold a 1 hour conversation with someone who barely knows any words?
@ShaneGodliman
@ShaneGodliman 3 года назад
(Totally misread this at first) Yeah this is a tough one, but I think the best thing you can do is to prepare a lot of basic topics, questions, different things to give you things to keep the conversation moving, or even different content like pictures and videos if you need extra assistance getting them to understand something. I’ve found with teaching English most people have at least a tiny bit if knowledge so will be able to string a couple of basic sentences together at least. Ultimately prepare lots of resources and content would be my advice

For example how much time you can be available for classes, which language you’re teaching and how in demand it is, what previous experience you have, the prices you charge, what your expenses are etc. It is possible, but it might be harder for some people that it would be for others in my opinion

Sí, puedes ser tutor de la comunidad, yo tengo temas preparados porque a veces es más fácil que intentar entablar conversación de la nada y también para evitar solo hablar de las cosas cotidianas. @ShaneGodliman
@ShaneGodliman 2 года назад
The majority of my students have been adults, often professionals, sometimes university students, to be honest theres a real mix, I’ve had people studying during uni and others studying during retirement! Technically italki’s policy states that you need to be 14 to join but there are also parents who create an account for their children to have classes, I don’t have any experience with teaching children so I refer those classes on to other people if I get them

I think how good the money is depends on where you live. If you are teaching English and charging 15 an hour, and live in the US, then that isn't that great. If you are living in Cambodia or the Philippines. Well that is a different story all together.
