I've seen this before in my Cuban friends house; his family used it for cuban coffee. They would put sugar into the carafe, stop the brewing after a few drops then mix the sugar and coffee to make a crema, turn the machine back on and let the rest of the coffee brew. I have one of these under a different brand name. Although you're definitely not going to get cafe quality espresso out of this, after a bit of reading and playing around it's possible to get a decent drink. First off, just go ahead and choke the machine- grind so fine that you get no extraction. Then back off slightly from there until it seems right. It can be tricky to find a tamp that fits, so use whatever you can find that fits (flip a spice container upside down and use the lid?) Don't forget to measure ratios in and out as well! The biggest thing that's going to help you out here is preboiling the water, either in a kettle or by turning the machine on to the steam mode and wait till it's really cranking out. This gets rid of that preinfusion problem, and ideally if you play around with your variables enough you should get a decent 30 second pull. It's definitely some trial and error but if you're broke and not too elitist with your palate it's a fun way to go!

The frothing is decent too.
@megandawntoo
@megandawntoo 2 года назад
@@morgandrinkscoffee It took me a bit to figure out that the 3 position knob is actually adjustable. When you turn to brew, just turn until the lamp lights. This activates the heating element in the tank. Wait about 3 minutes and turn the knob ever so slightly to increase water volume. Stop when you hear sort of a burble sound and wait, shortly the extraction will be visible. The formula I used was grind as fine as your grinder allows, hard tamp 18g coffee, pull off 36g water, 30 seconds. Not perfect but not bad. I use this on the boat when out cruising. Froth milk as usual. Enjoy!

You can have low budget machines but optimally you would want to start looking into second hand rancillio silvia or the gaggia classic sure they are going to be 4x the price of the unit shown above but you will get a solid machine that you can easily maintain which could be an issue to some cheaper machines but not neccessarily to their detriment

I have one of these makers, and from this video, I do see one issue you are having that you can fix right away. Yes, there are three positions; off, coffee, and steam. However, in between 'off' and 'coffee' is the spot you want to turn the dial; this will turn on the pot, heat the water, and then wait for the green light to appear. Once the green light appears, turn the dial to 'coffee'. You will get better pressure and faster pouring time.... STOP turning the dial to froth your milk in-between pours. Just be patient and do it after the pour. There will still be residual steam left in the pot to quickly steam your milk. Let me know how this works for you. For me, it works just fine, and of course, it just takes some minor adjustments in coffee grind, measurements, etc. to get the perfect cup of espresso. Cheers. ; )

You should try getting the Nanopresso if you can spare the extra 25$ or so; produces a pretty good crema and it's portable too. I have used cheap espresso makers in past just like these ,the thing you can do better to make nice coffee is 1)preheat the machine 2)use half mark on portofilter and tamp it in 3)if the machine is preheated the extraction is quicker and you might be able to see some crema 4)use home espresso grind and depending on the cackyness of discarded grinds see if you need finer or coarser also dont use dark roast as it tends to destroy the coffee you can feel lot of acidity and oilyness use medium roast that’s all.

My gf got me this same espresso maker for Valentine’s Day. A good tip I saw someone else do on RU-vid: just steam/froth the milk first, the water will start heating up while steaming the milk. Once you got the texture/consistency & heat desired, switch over to brew & let the espresso brew completely. I saw on Amazon, saying not to use fine ground. Some coffee will just get thru the filter, but honestly you don’t feel the grounds when drinking it. It’s a decent espresso maker, definitely a beginner one (especially someone like me). I finally got it right the fourth time after learning how to properly steam the milk & compress the espresso down It’s 8PM, it might’ve been a mistake to drink this so late 😂

Hey! So the flat bottom on the spoon may be because Imusa is very popular in Hispanic households here in the U.S. They are also sold a lot in Hispanic grocery stores in Miami. That being said, Cuban people make coffee by scooping the coffee into the little metal filter thing and then pressing it down to pack the coffee until the filter is full to the brim with pressed coffee. My grandparents, their parents, and my own parents have always done it that way and that may be the reason that the spoon has that.

Basically you want to make coffee when you buy it. But as shown in this video, it is just impossible to do a decent, drinkable espresso. So I think, this is a product what people buy, being unhappy with it and put it away. After month it will be thrown away because you don’t use it, so it becomes trash. And I think, there are too many products out there just too cheap and sadly engineered, which become electro trash. Just a waste of material. Cool Video, but a bit too kind to this product imo

When I was in college, my mom got me what was effectively that same espresso machine but the Mr. Coffee version. I knew going into it that it wouldn't really be "espresso," but I was still pretty new to the coffee world at that time. That being said, I think it was a great starting point for me. I learned more about coffee grind size and brewing methods, I learned more about steaming milk, and I overall continued to enjoy the coffee I made with that machine. A few years later, my husband and I were gifted a DeLonghi as a wedding gift and I donated my trusty ol' Mr. Coffee, but I was very fond of that machine and am thankful that it provided a decent foundation for me to grow from in my coffee experience and skills. I'd also like to add that I really, really love the way this review was done. Your positivity and ability to find the good was refreshing and is a beautiful skill to have!

Mom got this machine from grandma and I found this video because of it. At first I thought it was shitty. Well, what I've gathered is this: DONT follow the instructions. What I do is the following. I filled the porftafilter up to the top regardless of the measure marks on the side. I did the same as you stamping the coffee. Put it in steam mode so water gets boiling. THEN you put the portafilter in the machine and put it in brewing mode. Now here's the next trick. You see the mark on the carafe that shows the "steaming" icon? THAT's when I turn it off. So I get a very nice cup of cofee around the same amount a small 4 cup moka pot would make and with the same texture but low to no acidity and with a touch of crema. In general it's a very mediocre machine since it has no way to heat the water until you want to brew and it has low pressure so not really espresso extraction. But yes, with these tricks it became a quick easy machine to make a single cup of coffee. Offers much more control than a moka pot which is the traditional way here in DR, but gotdamn, it's acidic as sin. Yes, even if you pre-boil the water and take it out just before it starts sputtering, it's very hard to control the acidity.

Krups makes one in a very similar design ( though I believe better made ) and for more money. Because friends knew I was "into coffee" they gave me one for a gift. Of course an Espresso it is not, it never gets anywhere near 9 bars pressure to create the rich deep cream nature of true Espresso, but what this design is, is a MOKA Pot, at least in how the coffee comes out. I threw away the very large basket that comes with this design, and instead used an old VST 20g very fine basket I had lying around, and "tamped" the puck very hard, and the quality of the coffee improved, but it is still a MOKA Pot coffee.

I had one very similar to that back in the 1990s; it made a strong coffee, not espresso, but you could steam/froth milk. Given that I could only find espresso at a couple of Italian restaurants at the time, it was OK. I used Medaglia D'Oro "Italian Roast Espresso Style Ground Coffee." Mine did come with a milk pitcher, and yes, the scoop was also the tamper.

I've found that pressure is too low, so tamping results in horrific channeling. Don't tamp. The pre-infusion is necessary for a half decent result, I usually let the machine eject steam from the wand until the temp pressure builds up and then fettle the dial during the coffee stage.

I had one of these in college, but I believe branded as Proctor-Silex. The coffee is obviously not espresso, more akin to a moka pot I suppose. Worked for the time. But the steaming function was far ahead of most other machines that I’ve used in the sub-$200 category. Also I think it works better with a darker Italian roast.
@grahamglendenning144
@grahamglendenning144 3 года назад
My son gave me one of these twenty five years ago and it's still going strong. After you learn to adjust the bean, the roast, the grind, the amount of coffee and tamping it makes a very nice cup. After a while you learn to adjust for individual tastes. You won't get a fine froth from the steamer but that doesn't worry me. In fact, it makes a nicer drink than machines that cost thousands of dollars.

i have the MR. Coffee version of the espresso maker. it is very similar to this one but has a shorter fixed steam want that had a black plastic aerator on it. the aerator did nothing for me so i removed it and the steamer works perfectly now.

hey! you might wanna try using pre-ground coffee since this is very much a beginner machine, and people in the market for it probably don't have grinders and will mostly opt for pre-ground. obviously, you wouldn't normally do this with a machine that claims to make espresso, but since this one makes it in its own altered way, pre-ground might work out better! just a suggestion from a beginner, so take this with grain of salt ! (p.s. I loved the video! great work!)

From what I understand, this is better at making Cuban coffee than it is espresso/lattes. The steam wand is halfway decent at making a sugar espuma without the need for hand whipping. That being said, I'd like to see Morgan take on a traditional Cuban coffee. It would be a good opportunity to do a primer on the Moka pot.

Seems like it's a drip machine with a pressurized, heated reservoir (see warning in the manual about not opening anything during brewing). That also explains why it takes so long to start. Sounds scary to me...

i just bought a machine that is very similar except for the outside design. The brand is reguere and it's def not famous cuz i found not a single vid of this machine. the functions are EXACTLY the same. Tested it today and it looked very much like drip coffee but i think i didn't tamp it enough and also the coffee i used was preground and has been sitting in the fridge for months. the steam wand is pretty decent, powerful but the angle is steeper so i couldn't get the position right and ended up adding too much air and big bubbles. i think i will try pouring into another cup

I tried one of those years ago when I was 13 for sale for $10, I put so much coffee in the thing and had it figured out, It got me into espresso/coffee beverage making, so I can't fault it. My thoughts are if you can afford it, start out with at least a inexpensive Breville machine for $400- if it's not for you, just re-sell it- if you start out with something like that $30 steam powered espresso brewer, it may tarnish your opinion on making cafe' drinks at home. This is fine for a cheap way to get your infusion or espresso_ish_ fix at work.

you’re supposed to pour water to the 2 line on the pitcher thing for a double shot and put the espresso to the 2 line for a double shot so it’s equal parts water to the 2 line and the espresso grounds to the 2 line for a double shot
