Does AI understand Australian politics? Is ChatGPT a reliable source of information? Well, I asked it to explain elections, the Senate, and the House of Representatives and I was initially impressed by what it got right - followed by mortified by just how incredibly blatantly wrong it could be.
So, enjoy! Come learn a thing or two about how parliament works and also the pitfalls of AI generated information.
IMPORTANT NOTE: I say in this episode that to increase the House of Representatives the easiest way is to give the Territories more Senators. Apparently, the House increases based off the Senate representation from the States - not the Territories. Here's a blog post by Antony Green for more detail: antonygreen.co...

Auspol Explained would like to acknowledge the Whadjuk Nyoongar people and their Elders as the owners and custodians of the Land that the episode was recorded and edited on. This Land was stolen and never ceded. It always was and always will be Aboriginal Land.

Chat GPT 3.5 stopped receiving updates from February 2022, so the Queen makes sense from that

I like how the senate vote has changed from either number one or all, to either number 1, all, or 12. I never liked only voting for 1. But I also got a tired hand numbering them all 😅😂

It says that judging who is "best" is subjective but the top 4 are John Curtin, Robert Menzies, Bob Hawke, and John Howard so it has a nice neutral even percentage of Labor and Liberal PMs there.

27:35 See Chat GPT was completely wrong about Question Time. Question Time is a time in parliament when ministers pretend to be primary school kids! 😂

Fun fact. Chat GPT sounds very similar to Cat I farted in French 😂

The response to the first question sounds almost word for word like the VCE Year 11 Legal Studies textbook (from 2017 when I was in Yr11, and 2023 when I tutored Yr11). I’m not surprised it managed to get most of that part right, because it’s basically explaining the first couple pages of the textbook, which would probably be the same across multiple states and different contexts such as on Wikipedia, government websites, and university courses. The biggest clue is that it has simplified information in almost the exact same way, such as by leaving out the information about the caveats because of the territories or only focussing on what usually happens. When it starts to get into more detail it makes more errors probably because the sources it is aggregating from focus on different elements, or order the points in different ways etc. This is why Chat GPT is so bad for educational contexts, because we don’t know what sources it is using and it is unable to cite its sources.

Do you have a video on committees or can you create one? Maybe? They sound kind of interesting and would love a more in depth video on them.
