About the Staedtler pencils: Staedtler is a German brand, and their pencils are actually 1:1 the same as those from Eberhardt Faber (which is part of the Faber Castell brand). They both are produced in the same building, just the finish is different, so they're really high quality pencils actually.
Shopping at Ross is really like a treasure hunt; every now and then you'll come across something real good. Just recently I got a couple of 6 marker sets of Winsor Newton Pro Markers. Each one was $6.99!
I did too! I was gonna leave them but they’re high quality and my sister is an employee at a Ross. We went to a bigger one and using her 40% discount, I got them for about $3 😭
You can absolutely make exceptional art with cheap supplies it just takes some creativity to get there. One of my favorite artists uses Crayola.... heck, I use Crayola crayons myself if I'm going for whimsical or dreamlike feeling in my art.
@@Benjamin-qf9ni It's not wasteful at all. Canvas can easily be reused by covering the paint with gesso and painting over it. And it's actually proper procedure to test the art supplies you intend to use on the surface of the final product, because then you know precisely how it's going to behave. If she were to test the paints on paper, the dried paints could look different from how they would on canvas.
I'm not a very feminine girl, but my grandma takes me to Ross and other clothing stores very often, and I feel like it takes forever and she buys me too much stuff....
I used to hate Ross but around 1-2 years ago I’ve started loving it !! I can always dig around for good finds in the art section! I even found an XL watercolor sketchbook for $8 and a mixed media sketchbook for $6!! A 60 pack of Staedtler fineliners was only $21 because the box was damadged :3
Those markers seem like the type that brands can buy and brand. I have ones that look the exact same, the same colours and all, that are from a shop named 'The Works'
I thought they were privately labeled. Daiso has the same ones and Bismark uses them, now I know why they're so cheap. But I am still waiting to find a marker that has the quality of copics.
It has become quite expensive here too….but of course I schooled during Apartheid times and the Rand was a much stronger currency in the international market. Times change.
So as an employee of Ross I can tell you this, we get basically two types of items. Something that is overstock (a company buys too much or can’t sell it) and defective/imperfect items. Some of the things we see lmao.
Just found your channel a couple days ago, and it's already got my creative juices flowing while also being really educational. My amazon wish list is stocking up. I definitely need that mixed media notebook, since I can never stick to just one form and am constantly all over the place. Thank you!
I used to work for Ross and one time they had big prismcolor pencil packs for a really good price and I was like are these real? Bought one, tried them out and they were legit so I bought like 3 packs and I'm set for life xD
For some reason, Rae always looks like she should be a Kim Possible character in her thumbnails. (To me at least, lol.) She’s genuinely so pretty, and her content always makes my day. 🥰
Oh man, Ross is a trip. You can find some absolutely amazing stuff there... And total garbage. My grandmother loves buying toys there for Christmas and birthday gifts (she just stocks up and stores)!for her great grandkids. Sometimes it's cheap knock off toys that fall apart, and sometimes it's discontinued Disney toys, like the doll my daughter had wanted, but I couldn't find. Ross is a trip.
@@sarroumarbeu6810 - Check to see if you got TJ Maxx, Marshall’s or Burlington Coat Factory as they’re similar to Ross. I’ve not only scored some really good deals at my BCF (like a name brand blouse that would of cost me around 60 dollars at a store like Macy’s) but I’ve even found stuff that’s not in stores anymore like a Target exclusive MLP figure.
One time I got a really nice sketch book from Ross and the paper was semi-thick but not too thin, perfect for water color's and alcohol markers, and it had about 70 pages in it. I wish I could find it again :( Edit: I FINALLY FOUND THE SKETCHBOOK- (sorry for yelling lol) But I found it, it was a sketchpad that says "Sketchpad" with a detsiled sketch of flowers and is an 8.5 x 11 inch sketchpad. It is also apparently distributed by Gingko Internatinal Company Limited (There's not much info I can find for where it came from but I know I had gotten this sketchbook from Ross)
Those first staedtler pencils I have been using my whole life. They are great for sketching, full drawings (graphite, obviously you wont be able to achieve the same effects as a proper pencil set but with skill you can make it work) and writing. Seriously a 10/10 product, in my opinion
I need that Golden Girls backpack! I need it in my life right now. I love these videos though! I'm not artistic in anyway but my son is. He's so talented and these videos are so helpful when it comes to buying him supplies.
I work at Ross and I can tell you that that’s a normal set of alcohol markers that we sell… and we almost ALWAYS have canvas or canvas board for like $10 or less… unless you get a huge one. Lol
Discounted Up! 😆 Could you imagine the discussion? "Hey boss! These paints aren't selling at $3" "Eh, mark em up to $5! Some sap'll buy em for one of them reviews on RU-vid!!"
I read that in a "mafia boss and goon" voice and I cant stop laughing "Ay boss! These paints aren't sellin' at 3 dollahs!" "Ehh, mark 'em up to five! Some sap'll buy 'em for one of them reviews on RU-vid!"
5:52, “…is kind of concerning because when you turn it around…” *ignores warning about cancer and reproductive harm* “…it’s been discounted [three times]”
ive actually had them before. i got them for free though, legit from ross, it was broken so they gave it to me for free. the paints were honestly good, i didn’t even touch the paint brush though, i do not remember where i put it but it’s prob in the trash update: i just realized they’re water color and i treated them as acrylics, so no wonder i had no problem with the streaking.
@@nic-2144 it's not cheaper, it cost stores thousands and it's californa law. It was a proposition that passed a couple of years ago. Stores in your state like homegoods, tjmax, even target carry the same stuff. They just don't have to legally label it. Even though it still can cause cancer, and reproductive health issues. Even our Starbucks stores and most restaurants have the same label.
They have a sign in front of Disneyland that says the same thing. They plan to mandate all businesses, like chain stores, groceries, and malls to have that sign by 2024.
I love the Wonder and Weiss brushes that i got from Ross, though downside is that sometimes the glue isnt good as the brush tips with the gold attachment falls off
Yeah, her pronunciation was quite good but especially the “St” is pronounced a little bit different if you want to be 100% correct (ugh, I know this is a very stereotypical German comment, I hope I don’t sound too annoying, I actually only wanted to educate those who are interested) I don’t know how to explain it in words, but if someone reads this and wants to know the correct pronunciation, you could type it into the Google translate machine, select German and press on the speaker button :) Edit: I tried it myself and it sounds a little weird because the voice pronounced it too slowly, but you could hear the “Sch” sound in the beginning. English speakers don’t have this sound in their language but it’s a little like the sound you do if you want someone to be quiet (🤫 “shhh”)
Pro-tipp: When watercolors come with a brush like that, take the money and buy yourself some ice cream instead. As for the other brushes, the ones with the wooden handles: since when are wooden handles a rare thing? Did I miss something? I am pretty sure that the very vast majority of all artist brushes pretty much everywhere have wooden handles.
Rae, a tip to clean brand new brushes is Dove soap and a brisle cleaner. That's how I keep mine clean! Hope it helps! The brisle cleaner is off of Amazon.
Cool tip i use special soap called escoda for my brushes really keeps them clean and soft great for removing dye off brushes especially for leather dye and etc
I’m such a big fan of u rae! I love how you don’t really use super expensive art supplies and affordable things, and I love your art! Edit: tysm for liking my comment! I hope you all have a great day and stay safe!
I have devoted my life to being a real expert on art supplies and their cost. Even though I have art in museums and famous collections, for some crazy reason I really enjoy this channel. I think it is just SuperRae's personality and fun approach.
Maybe with the cheap dye based paints they could be mixed with gesso to make more pastel shades but with a better texture/coverage and used in thicker layers like impasto style
My best Ross art supply experience was when I found Prismacolor 36 pack colored pencils for 8.99. There were 3 of them and I bought them all. I kept one and gave the other 2 to my other artist friends. They freaked out when I told them how much they cost.
I have gotten art supplies from places like tj Maxx and Ross and some stuff is amazing and oh! Sharpie put out a set of jewel tone colors and I got the set and they are amazing
In India, you get artist quality watercolours for just 3 - 6 dollars..........which would be preety cheap for you guys....i guess.............and the best part...i use a good quality student watercolours which is worth just 1.5 and the other for 1 dollars (but still expensive for me).......though they are this cheap.......their quality is absolutely amazing
Bruh I literally asked for this and thought you were never gonna do it. Everyone should know about these markers to save some serious $$$. Next should be Five Below alcohol markers if you haven't tried those yet!
Oh my god I would’ve bought that Golden Girls backpack SO FAST and wear it around my college to hold my books in. I want it so bad, my Ross don’t got that 😞😞
I so want to send you all the acrylic mixing mediums that are in my local store some day. I think you'd absolutely love them 😭 the slow drying and extending medium are my holy grails. I think you'd love the thickening gel and lava grain mediums
These alcohol markers are really decent. In my country we have these a lot and I use these along with copics and they blend really well together. And they are sooo cheap! 1000% recommend
when it comes to discount stores like Ross and Marshalls you can find some nice art paper like drawing. usually its found in unlined journals. some times you can find it in it expected form as in drawing pads or sketchbooks. many times they can be high end. i've found steadler watercolor pencils. i was able to compare them to the same identical steadler watercolor pencils found in the Michaels next door. Ross had them for $8 and Michaels next door had them on sale for $30. these stores have a cycle for their discounts. if something doesn sell by the time it reaches the end of their discount cycle it goes back its original starting price to go through the cycle repeatedly until it sells.
I love staedtler pencils. Been using them for a while for drawing and I just absolutely love them. I also use the mechanical pencils and they are pretty good.
unrelated but YOUR PFP OMG! i made similar drawing of frog with toadstool hat few days ago just like in your pfp lol so cuteeee. if i may ask is that your own drawing or not? (if not then may i ask who's the artist?)
Ok weird comment from a previous retail worker, regarding the stickers on the paint. It IS possible that the original sticker was from a previous “sale” or came from another store. If you would have caught it in store or if I knew by, I would have given it to you for the cheaper price (I’ve done this before in retail 😅). Also I totally have had a “fan” market pack 😂 its terrible 😂😂 video looked great 👍🏻 really have loved the updated style since the move!
Broooo, I just got those alcohol markers at five below! I tried one, and decided it was trash, but after I saw this and tried different colors, daaaaang! It's a good thing I didn't throw em away! 😅 I should really start testing the whole pack before thinking it's trash!
That silk shirt is everything!! And I'll always be hitting the like button no matter what you post cause I want to support you!! And I know I'm going to love the vid anyways 😄
very helpful art hack: at 17:00 when u peeled off the art tape it didnt leave a clean line. to fix that, after u put on ur tape wherever u want, use paint in the same color of the background (white in ur case) then wait for it to dry then use whatever color u want (black for u) and after u peel off the tape ur left with a CRISP SHARP line! i tried it and it works great
I am not an artist by any means but even though my art looks like chicken scratch, I am really addicted to Rae’s art and videos. Probably my favorite art channel ever
