I think dad may have lost awareness of mirrors/reflections

This is from a few weeks ago, but has been pretty consistent for a while now. He can see me through the mirror but when I beckon him you can see him try to nudge forward a little bit through the counter. I wind up having to go in there and turn him around to get him to walk out.

This to me is like a metaphorical representation of this disease. It’s as if the actual person gets stuck on the other side of that mirror unable to maneuver freely because they have no control of the physical body anymore. They are just a mere reflection of who they use to be 😢💔

Thanks for sharing this journey with your dad. You're helping alot of people understand the complexities of alzheimer's.

Yes it is complex however I can clearly see that he's in the late stages of A/H.

My grandfather’s brother, with his Alzheimer’s, they had to cover, take down or flip over mirrors, pictures, windows, etc...he would see his reflection & punch them...cutting his hand twice, twice was all it took...also had to lock doors from the “inside”, as he took off one day & was found wandering in the median of a busy street, thank goodness police saw his info on display around his neck & was able to get him back home 😔 this is definitely a horrible disease 😔

Prayers for you and your Dad. My Dad is in the late stages and I cry just thinking about him. Such a cruel and inhumane disease for all involved.

Bless you for helping your dad through this. Many are unable. There is an odd similarity between this and autism which I came to recognize through my son.

The body is fine, it's the mind of the person. They cannot put together the words, ideas to react, to act normal. And they feel frustration too as a result. Reacting mad, or confused. They just dont know how to express it. It's very complex.
@scottcupp8129
@scottcupp8129 4 года назад
The body is just a set of peripherals. The brain is literally us. It is our emotions, our consciousness, memories, dreams, desires etc. When it goes away, the body merely becomes an empty shell.

You have to wonder what is going on in his mind as he stands there staring at the mirror. Is he hallucinating, seeing things that aren't there? Is he staring into a void, having no thoughts at all? Or is he in some kind of dementia induced trance? Does he see himself in the mirror or does it just not register? I am very curious about what actually happens inside a dementia patient's mind when they get that blank look and seem so disconnected from the world.

I want to wish you and your father the best in this fight against Alzheimer’s. I know it’s a fight that can’t be won but only slowed down as of right now. But I wish nothing but the best for you all. My grandpa has Alzheimer’s as well and it’s slowly getting worse. I wish people would care more/ do more to help stop this horrible disease but as of right now it’s just a waiting game. Once again I wish you , your father, and family the best 💛

I feel for you. My Dad sadly passed away on Sept 1st 2018. He had vascular dementia. It's a cruel disease. They say it takes an army to look after them in the later stages and this is so true but, we wouldn't have had it no other way. Wish he was still here, but we know he's not suffering anymore. Just love him and be there for him. He will know in his own way 😔❤

Thanx for sharing. I lost my mom in 2013 and I wish I would have thought to record or look for videos to give me a heads up for what I was in for. Truly hard to watch your loved ones go through this. So far your journey is exactly like mine was. Good luck and you are a wonderful son.

I was just diagnosed with this earful disease. I’m so scared. They say I have years but I live alone in Alaska and have written on post notes in my bathroom to myself to take a walk outside. When it gets too bad I will read this and walk out in the snow and die a death that way. I don’t want to live with this... I’m sorry for you and father....

my grandma is reaching her final stages of dementia, and she doesn’t know her name when you ask, she can no longer walk, she sleeps all day, she barely talks now and has no energy, she only weighs 110 lbs and her diabetes has pretty much disappeared, she hasn’t needed insulin in about 2 years, she used to be about 200lbs, sad how everything can drastically change in the matter of just 6 years
