"A mission, to kill someone's son. A foe who won't run, unlike anyone you have faced before" Not only is sung to the same notes and rhythm to Survive, but kinda describes Polyphemus as well as the infant.
my husband and i have this headcanon that Zeus wasn't just talking about the infant in that song because the lyrics just fit perfectly. A foe who wont run (baby cant run, cyclops is just a stubborn tough dude who doesn't back down). Unlike anyone you have faced before ( he's definitely not fought or killed children before, don't think he has ever faced monster like the cyclops either) I don't think your ready ( your not going to be ready to kill a baby morally, and with cyclops your not ready to face such an enormous threat and it wont go like you think it will)
Let's not forget that they'd already killed The Favorite Sheep. There had already been bloodshed. The basically rolled up to this man's house, shot his dog, and said "Hey we can settle this peacefully, I got a sixpack in my backseat, you can have one and no violence needs to happen"
@@LyrictheFilthyCasual I mean, they didn't know the sheep belonged to anyone or that the cave was inhabited. Odysseus unintentionally (or intentionally, Idk) made an eye joke to a cyclops's face. 😂
In Jay's recap of the recap, he explained all the different jokes in the recap (because meta humor) and explained "the obligatory mention of Polites' death" as being "because I like pancakes". 🤣
"My favorite sheep." Odysseus will eventually get a taste of that medicine (somewhat) when he returns to Ithaca. Jay said that Odysseus's dog Argos isn't directly mentioned in the music, but he wants the dog to appear once in one of Telemachus's songs.
Im sure mortius already knows, but I recently put together that Polyphemus and Poseidon has musical similarities in that they both have their names chanted in their introduction.
That's something Jorge has mentioned the reasoning for if I saw correctly. He was inspired by iirc the music in the Kingdom Hearts game series, where the boss battles had epic music. So he decided to have the "Boss" battles Odysseus faces have the "Boss's" name said in the background to make it just that more epic and memorable.
36:10 you really start your villain saga with that last word you just said now. We know he does not know you are a villain (continue to be this way 🙏 )
there is a saying that the biggest heroes are also the biggest villians. it just depends on from what perspective you look at them. heroes sometimes have a higher kill count than the villain of the story.
I just realized something. In Polyphemus, Odysseus says "Why would the lotus eaters pass up on all this food" as if there's no possibility that they just prefer Lotus because they've been mind controlled by it.
By ancient Greek standards Polyphemus's violations were even more egregious, with him in the wrong and violating xenia from the beginning. But by modern standards he was still in the wrong after he accepted the wine. Odysseus stated the terms for him receiving the wine were them leaving alive. By drinking the wine he accepted those terms, only to immediately change them and decide he was going to kill all of them. That makes him a thief as well as a murderer, using the personal injury he received as justification. To remain sympathetic and on the right side of things morally he would have had to decline the wine and refuse the terms, citing the fact they weren't enough compensation.
I’m so sorry you had to go through this, but it’s a rite of passage. So now, Welcome to the Tauma Train driven by Mr. Jalapeño. 32:08 Why is it so funny to see other people so traumatized? Seriously, I think I need help! I started giggling at 33:22!
OMG Gigi is going to upload her Monster animation!! must have it in your reaction of the underworld said he was going to connect it with his animation of The Horse and the Infant! By the way, I'm loving these new collaborative reactions. It's great to see you being able to contribute new information now that you're involved in the fandom and Casper's reactions are so genuine and destroyed haha
Even knowing it had to be coming from the first few lines he has due to general genre awareness, that first named character casualty hits like a ton of bricks. It just goes to show what an incredible job the music and the art do together to pull you into these people's stories and make you care about them even if you know it's gonna sting. side note: As someone with a background in raising herd animals(never had sheep myself but I had friends and neighbors who did, while I grew up around my mother's horses, and my brother and I raised goats, which are kind of similar to sheep but more independent and sassy) you really do reach a point, very quickly, where they are individuals to you and also your babies, and you will fight any and all threats to their safety, up to and including god, with your teeth and fists if that's all that's handy. So while I don't agree with his methods, I 100% understand where Polyphemus is coming from in this saga, and it's not so much cyclops behavior as it is average farmer/shepherd behavior. That's just how it is. You defend your flock or herd to the best of your ability, because they need you and they trust you. To be fair, at this point, that's what Odysseus is doing, too.
I just had a thought. The reflection in Poleties eyes before he dies could be linked to Ody’s eye as well, if you think about the Underworld Saga (which you’ve seen by now) cause Ody questions if his decisions are what killed his men. Maybe it’s a reach, but this is Mircsy we’re talking about here
Honestly I think Your Light kind of explains Polites death perfectly. He froze when he was unexpectedly attacked by a large beast. He survived the Trojan War by fighting and killing his fellow man, expected foes.
This is a fun fact about the writing of the song survive. I don't know if you know this or if you are even going to see it but here it is. Original when Jorge was writing this song Eurylochus was the one that was supposed to die in survive. I saw the skit of it and it made me so sad and mad because we could have still had polites 😭
An interesting part of the Nobody thing is that it makes much more sense in the Ancient Greek as well. The word for nobody is ουδεις (ou-de-is) and he is Οδυσσευς (Odu-se-oos). The words are pretty similar and so Odysseus just adapts his name slightly.
A thing I noticed about Survive today, the opening lyrics are set to the same tune as Zeus and Odysseus's exchange in The Horse and the Infant. Just a faster pace than The Horse and the Infant. I love it.
If you think about it, itt had to be Polites. He was the only one who was trying to direct Odysseus towards peace. He was the only one who kept Odysseus from truly becoming a monster... With his death, it pushed Odysseus towards being a monster instead.
These two songs are my _favorite_ song pairing (songs that lead into each other, like "Done For" and "Other Ways") And "Survive" might just be my FAVORITE Epic song, #blessed that _these_ are two of the songs mircsy decided to animate
I just read this part in the Odyssey and it states there is ample food in the cave besides the sheep. Also there are a bunch of goats on another nearby island that aren’t used to being hunted. So they didn’t really have to kill the sheep.
One thing i just noticed in Polyphemus is Poly watched as Polites and Ody. high fived and their interaction, then kills Polites First as if it was pay back from killing his sheep...then killes the others Ody. brought with him besides Eury.
So here are two interesting things: 1. At 31:42, that move that Odysseus did was very similar to a character’s signature move in Attack on Titan. If that’s intentional, then having Mircsy be an anime fan is amazing. 2. In the version of the story that I was told, Polites was mentioned in Circe’s palace. Meaning he lived through the Cyclops encounter. So when I heard this song, I legit thought it was another soldier. It wasn’t until I saw animatics that I considered the possibility of other retellings.
Personally I absolutely DESPIZE Odysseus because when ever he does something wrong he NEVER tries to fix it in fact I think this is a perfect example of Odysseus screwing both him and his crew over by being too self righteous and emotionally inept to just admit he was wrong and try fixing it. The reason I say this is when Polyphemus shows up his eye whites are white but when he sees what they'd done they turn black meaning he's incredibly upset but when Odysseus tries to bargain with him using the wine they turn an almost gray color meaning while he wasn't completely over it he could've been persuaded into at LEAST leaving the crew alone but instead Odysseus angers him again by saying the eye to eye thing, which Cyclops are EXETREMLY insecure of their one eye, so he'd just made Polyphemus realize that Odysseus didn't respect him and that he didn't care that he'd hurt him. It's why NONE of the gods have at least a little bit of respect for him because he sees himself as just as important as the gods and doesn't try to fix things even when he's aware of the fact that he's wrong. I mean in ruthlessness Poseidon calls out his hypocrisy yet even then when Poseidon gives him a chance to redeem himself by apologizing not ONCE does he actually do it.
Hey man, you probably know already but gigi just released their AMAZING animatic for Monster:) couldn't recommend it more for when you get to the Underworld saga (unless you've filmed it already of course)
I'm so excited for season 2 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+. I'm curious of what the actor that they cast as Tyson will look like. I assume it's going to be far closer to the book than the film, since that's how season 1 was.
I might be wrong here, been a while, but if I remember right Polyphemus is kind of the brunt of the other Cylopes jokes and the like. He's a little smaller and also (again I think) the youngest, so he's been forced to look after the sheep that they eat. He's treated like shit by his brothers so the sheep are more than just a flock of livestock to him... they're quite literally his only friends. Not that we need to sympathize for the guy, he's a literal monster. Edit: Hacksaw Ridge... the story of Desmond T. Doss... who did SOOO much that they (Director and Writers) actually dumbed down what he was able to do at that time because they thought people would try to call "bull shit" on them. Edit 2: There's a widely accepted thing in literature: Don't kill a character the readers won't miss. Sometimes said as: Only kill a character you think the readers will love. Because when death happens... it should hurt.
I love and i hate at the same time how americans know like... Anything about the epic master piece in the literature. Because here in uerope we study this kind of things when we are like 12 years old, and i think this is something that can't be missing from someone studies. The literature opens your mind, and if it is take like this is very fascinating and breath taking. I don't exactly if every person in america doesn't study this kind of things, but if it is so, please take an effort to change your nations plan of study because this is something tha can't be missing P.S. sorry if i made some mistake in the text
So seems there was once again a misunderstanding, yes he accepted the wine but Odysseus had already spilled innocent blood so the second the deal was struck it was immediately broken , and cyclopse was working under the house guest rules meaning he couldn’t actually kill them since they were his guests but since they made and broke a deal the house guest clause became null and void meaning now he can attack! Odysseus trying to be smart started the fight
This is where I deliver a "fun" fact (actually depressing) and state that Polities last word before he died was the exact same as his first word in the show "Captain"
How is it that we are so eager to see someone else experience the same pain we did... It's a very strange feeling of belonging from sharing trauma generated by Jorge XD
Fun fact, so rub salt in the wound: this was alllll Jorge. In the odyssey, Polites survives long after the Polyphemus :D another fun fact about the odyssey and polites: while polites is an extremely minor character, he is referred to as Odysseus’ best friend
I think it's very understandable. The war is over, he thinks from now he'll get to go home and experience an era of peace, he can finally stop and appreciate the world for what it is. But little did he know, they were crossing the sea of monsters, and everyone who lives here has the "kill or be killed" mentality. Polites was doomed from the start.
My theory is that he got killed by the cyclops because he tried to get close enough to reason with him, and that’s why he was thinking about open arms when he died
Mort first going "oh wow can you imagine he died haha thatd be so sad luckily he's still standing" and then revealing he showed him my light before this? Villain.
The first time I listened to Survive it was strictly audio and I didn't realize the first "captain..." was our sweet boy. So for the rest of the Cyclops saga I kept waiting for Polites to say something and I felt so much dread. so I watched this very animatic and it ruined my life 😭😭😭 devastated for you both but looking forward to the reaction!
The whole segment with Polyphemos relies on an ancient greek law; the law of xenia, or hospitality. This law was so important that it was overseen by Zeus himself - as in, those who violated it would be punished by Zeus and basically boiled down to "dont hurt, maim, or kill your guests so help me" and would in part be 'signed' by sharing a meal between host and guest; eat the food, you've entered the contract, and now xenia protects you both. Now, my only source for what I'm about to say is a translation of the Odyssey I read so I can't vouch for the accuracy, but according to xenia, those who requested your hospitality were to be lodged and fed for three days before the host could ask them their name or business. Strike one against Polyphemos, who asks this question right out the gate. Then there's the concept of guest gifts - as part of hospitality being exchanged, host and guest would exchange gifts upon their meeting, usually something valuable. Strike two against Polyphemos, who decides his guest gift to Odysseus will be eating him last which. Is not a guest gift due to the very spirit of xenia. Obviously. (Side note; this is also the crux of the Underworld, where if you eat the food, you're Hades's guest - which means you never leave) Anyway while us modern folk would think Polyphemos justified in demanding who tf is up in his house killing his animals and threatening violence, by ancient greek standards this made him a thug, and notably a bad host deserving of some eye-poking. (Oops this got long- But I felt context adds another layer to the song so here it is uwu) (Also, in the translation I read, Poseidon visits Polyphemos after the ordeal while Odysseus is on the raft sailing away from [spoilers] and once he learns what a terrbile host his son was he essentially drops his grudge which is. Fair, I guess. If a bit late lmao)
@@LoreCatan That's because Polyphemus prayed to Poseidon and told him what happened. Poseidon is a god and can hear prayers in his name. At least that's how the story goes. After Polyphemus prayed to and sobbed to his father, Poseidon went off to kill the man who mutilated his son. He didn't stop to wonder if Polyphemus deserved it. Which is fair. Poseidon was a beyon pissed father who wanted to seek vengance for his son.
@@alexandralugo1743 Oh man, I'm not familiar with the Odyssey at all so I had no idea. That's kinda fucked up, I wonder if that'll play a role in Epic or if it doesn't matter lol.
Wait. With Polites giving Odysseus a hand, Im staring at that frame more and Odysseus is on the ground kneeling holding onto 2 bloody swords. His hands are full. To grab polites's hand he would need to drop a sword.
@officialmortius also in that frame Polites's eyes are hidden by the glow of his glasses. They are not seeing eye to eye. (Ironically he was seeing eye to eye with Polyphemus) But he DOES take his hand next frame(which means he dropped a sword). And in act3-music2(ody singing part of open arms) and act3-music3(everything changed since polites), we can see Polites's effect on Ody
I saw another animatic that Polites died because Polyphemus was going to kill a lotus eater. He died protecting that lil' baby. Though I forgot whose animatic it was, I remember how heartbroken I was since it was also *the* animation that made it clear to me that Polites was the one who died first since I only listened to the audio.
I'm placing this comment on Casper's video too, but a little Greek insight to Remember Them. In Greek belief, for someone to pass over the River Styx and make it to the Underworld, they have to pay the Ferryman, Charon. That payment is typically buried with their body. There wasn't time to bury the fallen men. Odysseus knew his men and Polites would have no afterlife. He knew there was nothing he could do, except.. Remember Them.
I believe the red eyes are symbolic to their willingness to kill. The cyclops started with red eyes, odysseus was first of the crew and he riled up the crew. Polites was the only one without the red eyes, instead white for peace.
Casper was so done and broken lmao "What's Jorge's twitter?" Just took me looooool running to his channel to see the rest this is AMAZING! Mortius you bad bad person you enjoyed every second of thus and you know it lol
8:39 one thing I haven’t heard anyone mention is that, in the context of raising animals, “favorite” means some combination of “this is the best one I have” and “this is the one I breed the most from” and “this is the First one I ever got” AND “this is my pet”. Basically, Odysseus and crew killed Polyphemus’ Starter Pokemon. Just to make the Cyclopses response make more sense emotionally. That was something it took me about fifty listens to realize myself. Man this musical is good.
I once read on insta a comment that said something like "If someone came into my house, killed my dog to EAT IT and then try to apologize by giving me a soda, I'll be pretty pissed too" so yeah, not cool Odysseus, you killed his pet so that's what u get 🤷🏻♀️
That's a fucking horrible comparison. How is finding sheep you thought were wild and killing them to eat, only for them to have an owner who was eventually going to eat them, you offer barrels of wine as compensation and the owner accepts just to decide to kill and eat you a viable comparison to that. the only way such a comparison would be even close is if you 1. are living out in the woods or a cave instead of a house 2. were going to eat the dog yourself 3. they offered you a few bottles of expensive wine and 4. you decided to eat the person who did it after accepting the wine.
@@gun506 in Greece wine was pretty common, so basically Odysseus killed his livestock (or pet in Polyphemus's eyes), and offered him a cheap can of beer as compensation, and there is no way Odysseuys thought they were wild because they were in a cave filled with food and supplies
@@notavegan3 He literally has the line right after they killed it about how all these sheep gathered is too good to be true and they are in a dark cave, even if there were other supplies or food in there they clearly didn't see it or notice it until after they already killed them. We have easy access to wine as well does that automatically make a bottle of expensive wine equal to a cheap can of beer? There's no way in hell you can seriously look at this and be like yeah these two things are basically the exact same situation with the same circumstances.
@@gun506 I think you underestimate just how common it is to use caves as sheep pens, especially where house-building materials are scarce. They weren't roaming wild in the field. They were in a cave stocked with food. "Look at all this food, look at all these sheep. I can't believe this cave has all this for us to keep." Now, let's see it from the Cyclops' single-eyed point of view. Humans are a food source, like a pig or cow. A human just came into my house, planned to plunder all of my food, and even killed my pet with plans to eat it. This is like if a wild pig came into my property, ransacked my vegetable garden, and killed my dog. True story, this actually happened to my cousin in Louisiana. Guess what he did: he shot the pig and had pork chops for dinner and bacon for breakfast.
@@rhov-anion I'm not even going to argue this anymore. I really can't be bothered to see this as a viable comparison and clearly you guys think differently. So anymore talk on this would just be a waste of both of our time.
God I love that we all have the same reaction. The immediate. “No no no, there’s no way it’s too soon” trying to find anyway for him to not be gone followed by just IMMEDIATE devastation
The way Survive frames it the cyclops sees Oddy be lifted up by Polites, the zoom in and then shortly after he becomes the first death. I wonder if the animatic is framing it as the cyclops notices they have a stronger bond then most and goes after Polites with the intent of cause as much harm as possible to the man who in his eye wronged him more than any other.
He *did* say that he was going to take from Odysseus what Odysseus took from him. Polites is his favorite. So it makes sense for that moment to mark him as the one that would hurt the most to lose. 💔
