I Think I Found The Best Studio Setup.. // MPC 3000 Music Studio Workflow

The MPC 3000 made me change everything about my music studio. I know i re-do the studio constantly BUT adding an analog mixer, using individual outs on the mpc 3000, the sequential pro 3, and the ERM multi-clock changed my whole mindset. So i wanted to do a little update video about my current studio setup, how its allowed me to finish tracks quickly, and how i've started incorporating Ableton Live!
Some gear i talked about

Dude. Spare us the excuses about your rambling. Most of us come here FOR your heady talks about your journey in music. I personally love it. Feels good to know your struggles and ideas. And although 99% of your viewers are on a different page (setup wise), it's still SO inspiring. KEEP. IT. UP.

That “commit to audio” literally explained to me why I fell in love with my MPC. I’d spend WAY too long trying out different sounds and plugins etc to find a sound I liked before working on a track, since I’ve started using my MPC I’ve been more efficient, quicker and I LOVE my music more than ever before. Great video as per.

Robert Deniro has some line about how he feels like he's been faking it and in over his head his acting career. I feel like you've hit the nail on the head Ricky, it's about trusting your heart to lead you towards a setup and approach that's exciting and right for you, it's normal to feel in over your head. People need to stop worrying about comparing themselves to the people on instagram and youtube.

alright, man. This was the one. This was the one video that convinced me you're awesome. Chill, profound, and personal, while still being relatable and useful. I love when you get the "why" for setup videos, because that's when you can incorporate the ideas into your own rig without being a copycat.

I understand you so much. I bought a Digitakt as my first "expensive" gear and serious motivation to make music because of your review video more than 1 year ago. Since then, I play with it as soon as I have time. I have the same love feeling as you describe for your MPC. I know everything about the DT and really enjoy using only it since all this time. But recently, I finally made a big step and added a synth (Vermona PERfourMER) and a DAW (studio one). I think it's the perfect setup : A sampler, A synth, and a DAW. Thank you for your videos your sincerity is welcome.

"If something's on a preset or whatever [...] next thing you know, you completely destroyed the patch and you're working on a whole other song, so if I can just commit something to audio, cool. That's it. That's what I've gotta work with. Let's move on to the next thing and keep it going." I literally lost two years of my musical life trying to produce entirely ITB for this exact reason, *even knowing about this pitfall going into it*. The single best thing that I did for my productivity was putting a real modular on my desk and tracking it, instead of spending hours tweaking every single tiny thing in Bazille or VCV. There's still almost no limitation to the actual sounds I can make, but having to _commit_ to an idea and move on is such a big deal.

22:30 is such a good point! Thanks for that. I think everyone eventually realizes . No one cares where you got your 909 samples or if you just threw some Ableton groove on those hi hats instead of actually sequencing on hardware... All That Matters - 1. You had fun making it.. 2. It sounds good Just make it sing, man!! Doing all the old school stuff and vinyl sampling is GREAT but doesn’t translate into Great music, neccisarrily. Just fun for learning and appreciating the tech. For me a Tr-08 and Ju-06 running audio through usb into Ableton is all I need at the moment. Drum machine, synth, recording device...

Thank you so much for this video. For the first time I realized that the only things I actually need in my setup are one good synth and a sampler. Love this video, you've come to the same understanding that I've just found. I felt some pressure to use Live as everyone seems to love it, even tried the MPC but I'm not feeling that workflow. I've gone back to my roots with Reason, it just feels right. It helps the mordern versions play nicer with my synths as well as the MPC.

Love the authenticity of your conversations. Your love for the feel, vibe, and soul of your music and the process really comes across in the videos. Super refreshing these days with all the ‘get rich quick’ how to videos about music out there these days. Any ideas about a sampler workflow like you describe here on more modern gear? Is there anything out there these days that does what the MPC 3000 does well in its workflow?

This is great Ricky and I can 'feel' it too. I've recently moved to making tracks out Elektron boxes, modular & analog synths and a good DJ mixer so out of the computer box. There is definitely a limiting factor in play and I think this limitation is exactly where the 'feel' or 'vibe' is coming from, tracks happen in a single take. Out of The Box creation seems to preserve a lot of the humanisation and spontaneity, happy accidents which are not necessarily a natural thing when creating in the box, limit your choices, limit the distractions, this works for me and is a much faster workflow. The DAW is always there to polish things off when you are done.

Damn, had a crazy dream last night. Me and a friend were at a synthesizer/electronics store and you were working the counter. You told us it was probably chill for us to just take some laptops and leave without paying, which we did, in an extremely awkward fashion. Once we got out into the streets and realized no one was pursuing us, we both felt really bad about potentially putting your job in jeopardy. In short, woke up feeling really relieved that I didnt actually rip you off. Also nice videos ive been learning some good stuff from em.

Hey man I'm late to the race, but keep doing what you are doing. You are making a difference in peoples lives by sharing your knowledge of music, production and sound design. Just by watching your movements and workflow, I've learned so much. Even listening to your background music sometimes will inspire me to turn on my electibe and just mash something up to see what happens. I do this as a hobby, and for my love of music. Unfortunately, people are struggling right now, either financially, socially, sickness, etc or maybe just lonely because of the virus. Quarantine has given me more free time by myself, (and Im sure your subscribers too) and I spend that in my small studio, creating music to spread love and joy to others, even if they think my music sucks lol. As you say, Knowledge is power and we appreciate yours, good sir! Keep it going!

Keep rambling, my friend! I've been feeling similar about revolving the center of the studio around one piece of gear. Except for me it's the Deluge. That thing has exceeded all my expectations, and I can't live without it now. Wrote an album with just that, Peak, and Hydrasynth, and I'm really happy with the results. As always, thank you for putting out these great videos.

@@RickyTinez the few times I got to play with it at Knobcon, it didn't really click; but it kept showing up on my radar and I found a rare used one on Reverb for a good price. When it arrived, I powered it on and plugged in headphones to make sure everything worked. I didn't even plug it in yet, it was the battery. When I took off the headphones, three hours had passed. Of course, everyone's milage may vary, but it's replaced the Octatrack for my primary sequencer.

@@RickyTinez L R stereo outs only, is my biggest issue with Deluge. Currently hard panning drums and bass into a mono mixer channel, and synths and samples into another mono channel. So I can send synths and samples through fx keeping drums dry. And put a compressor on drums etc.

Wow, I love every single video you have made, but this is the best one yet. I have been writing almost entirely in the box the past two weeks and I have felt very guilty about all these expensive boxes surrounding me collecting dust. I had to get real with myself and get over my own prejudices. The truth of the matter is getting all those boxes to sync up can become an almost endless distraction, and I don't even know if they sound better. Thank you so much Ricky for getting to the core of the matter, the music. It's a brave thing for you to do seeing as I have come to this channel to watch you run the latest and greatest gadgets through their paces, and of course that's great! But in the end it's about beats, bass lines, chords, melodies (lyrics possibly? ;)). Thanks again brother!

Great video! I really love the ideas you have about making music and workflow. For myself I found that limitations are really necessary to get creative and form whole ideas. I guess it goes into the same direction as you trying to commit yourself to a specific sound and work with that. If I have too many possibilities to work on I can‘t really get a feeling of where I want to go. So for example having just a set of samples with a few options of tweaking gives me enough area to explore while not being able to go too far away to get lost. Again, lots of love and looking forward to your next videos to come!

great video...so relevant to me right now. I just recently added a couple basic things to my set-up (which is way moRe simplistic than what you have!!)...and then taking a little time to set up a easy and consistent file management work flow and it is like POW! all these cables and instruments that seemed strewn about before (I was tripping over stuff, feeling tangled, spending as much time trying to find things and remember what I was doing as I was experimenting) suddenly turned into this creative ecosystem that made sense to me and I can make something or play with an idea really quickly and it is a beautiful thing! Almost makes me feel like I can make something that is interesting to me "too quickly"...I have to force myself to be objective about outcomes and not associate how long it took with how "good" it is. The first part of this video that you suggested skipping was the part that I connected with the most!! It is cool because it isn't about equipment it is definitely all about the FEELS!
