30:32 The easiest way to rule out high digits on the four-cell renban here is to remember that you previously proved that that line includes the digit in the bulb of the thermo above (and thus a digit smaller than both yellow digits)
@braedonborschawa1883
@braedonborschawa1883 Год назад
To expand on this. Once you recognize the bulb has to be on the 4 cell renban, it is the lower digits of the two renbans in question. The blue ‘overlap’ digits of the 5 cell renban then must be the two lowest digits of the renban meaning the yellow and green digits must be consecutive. Then the 2 cell renban from the green digit must turn the ‘virtual 7 cell renban’ into an 8 cell renban where R3C3 is the highest digit.

Honestly, I do not want to invest the time needed to improve my sudoku skill to the point where I could solve the puzzles featured on the channel. So having the option to get the GAS pack is something I am grateful for. It's a fun, zen activity that I enjoy. Thank you Mark and Simon.

"Investing time" makes it sound like a chore when it should (hopefully) be fun. At the start, I just tried the easiest-looking puzzles on the channel, often watching the video for clues. Over time, I just naturally got better and could try harder puzzles. I'll never solve a Phistomefel but I'm way better than when I started, and it was fun the whole way :) Next time they post a non-GAS video between 10 and 20 minutes long, give the puzzle a try. You'll probably be surprised how much you can do yourself!

You don't need to start on the left *or* the right of the puzzle, it looks best if you do both breakins. Once you have the basic structure on both sides figured out, they work together on row 4 to let everything fall into place. For the left break-in it really helped me to color the bottom-left renban, and figure out what order they need to be in. For your solve, Green has to be the highest, then the two yellow ones, then the two remaining blue ones. As the blue ones copy to the middle renban, the other two digits on that line are below it in sequence. This gives you a sequence of 7 consecutive numbers with only 2 degrees of freedom. Something similar restricted the bottom right thermo's, and these restrictions on both sides taken together make row 4 completely fall into place. Took me 90(!) minutes but loved every minute of it.

In my experience, this happens when you get a message at the start of the puzzle saying you've done too many puzzles and some of the old ones need to be cleared from your cookies. This message, unlike the usual start-of-puzzle pop-up, does NOT start (or unpause) the timer when you send it away.

Time was 3:45:16. When I solved this puzzle, I reduced the number of possibilities for the renban lines on the left to two, then the renban line on the right to two. I found a way to entangle those possibilities together. Then I finally used the X in the middle to rule one of those possibilities out. From that point, it was smooth sailing. It was a really fun solve.

54:00 I found the easiest way to look at the "crossed swords" was that the thermo tip sees all 3 consecutive renban digits and is higher than one of them, so it must therefore be higher than ALL of them. So renban couldn't have a 9.

One observation that I found helpful when solving the puzzle was that the bulb of the thermo in box 1 had to be on the 4 length ram band in box 4. This would have allowed you to prove that the 4 length ram band was the lower half of the virtual 7 ram band. I explored the right side of the puzzle equally to the left and found that I could identify a length 8 virtual ram band on the left and a length 8 virtual thermo on the right and then figure out how to identify the excluded digit on each side. An elegant way to conceptualize crossed thermo/ram band in boxes 2 and 5 is as a single length 5 structure (all squares in the cross see each other). Outstanding puzzle!
@RichSmith77
@RichSmith77 Год назад
Nice observation. (It's "renban", by the way. But I see it's not named in the rules, and it does sound a lot like ram band.)
@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations Год назад
What you were missing, is that the bulb of the thermo in box 1 has to appear on the 4-cell renban, so it's on the low side. The other three thermo digits are on the 5-cell line, but the other two digits on the 5-cell line, are also on the 4-cell line. The overlapping digits between the lines must appear between the bulb and the second digit on the thermo. The fourth cell on the 4-cell line, which cannot appear on either thermo or 5-cell line, must be consecutive with the bulb and lower, and it is in R4C2. There were just two possibilities: Thermo: 2567, 5-cell line: 34567, 4-cell line: 1234 or Thermo: 3678, 5-cell line: 45678, 4-cell line: 2345. The 5-cell line in box 7 has the highest, and the two lowest digits on it. The cell in R3C3 effectively continues the thermo, which prevents a third option, starting with 4 in the thermo bulb. The other side was similar. I'd already done some preliminary work there, so seeing that R4C7=R7C8, and could be no greater than 6, helped me do the cross. This cut down the options for the right side, making it easy to see that R4C7 was 6, which resolved the renban and most of the long thermo. As usual, you placed digits without clearing up your pencil-marks. Had you done so, you wouldn't have stalled and asked "how do we do this?" You placed a 2 in R7C4, but failed to resolve the 12 pair in box 2, which would place a 2 in R5C5 and resolve the 23 pair in box 4, which in turn resolved pretty much everything. I'm always fascinated how the constructors find these geometrically confined arrangements. This was exquisite, partly because of the logic, but also for being totally symmetrical apart from the mirror version of each shape being the opposite type. It wasn't as hard as your ignoring of the thermo bulb in box 1 made it, but it was still tricky.
@joelstevens5670
@joelstevens5670 Год назад
Hi Raven Creations. Asking out of interest (and sorry, I know this was a while back, though I think the quality of the puzzle is probably worth it), how did you identify that the digit consecutive with the bulb was also lower? I know I made a slight mistake with the longest thermo on the right of thinking that 3 digits had to be consecutive when actually the other digit on the 4-cell renban could have been placed between them. I then realised my error and avoided making it on the left.
@Raven-Creations
@Raven-Creations Год назад
@@joelstevens5670 Hi Joel, I did this solve on my old, dead laptop, so I couldn't use Sven's excellent replay option to check. My pencil-marks would have been really useful in jogging my memory. From what I can remember, I think the point was that R1C2 is lower than yellow and must be on the 4-cell line, so the 4-cell line must also be lower than the 5-cell line. It only contains two overlapping digits with the 5-cell line. Since R4C2 cannot appear on the 5-cell line, it must be lower than any digit on the 5-cell line. If I recall correctly, if R4C2 were higher than the bulb, it would put too much of a gap between the bulb and yellow. That is, the bulb is sequential with the overlapping digits. I think I'd worked out earlier that there was exactly a two-digit gap between the bulb and yellow, which contained the two overlapping digits, but I'm afraid I can't really remember how I'd come to that deduction. I'm sorry I can't give you a more definitive answer.

Holy cow. I feel like I solved a Phistomefel puzzle without bifurcating, and then watched Simon "I never bifurcate" Anthony bifurcate the heck out of it! For me, the question Simon never asked about the left side was where did the bulb of the thermo in box 1 go in box 4 - had to be the four cell renban, making it the lower part of the virtual seven cell combined renban. And yes, there were all kinds of relationships on the right that I got by colouring.

dear simon, one day you will give yourself the credit you very much deserve as far as intelligence and your ability to solve puzzle of this magnitude and complexity. as is typical of a human, you tend to value skills/abilities/intelligences you feel you do not possess are more difficult/valuable than those you do have, which is an unfortunate part of our current situation as a species. maybe you couldn't create a puzzle like this, but your solving skills, as well as the ability to articulate the logic to an audience of extremely varied experience and abilities with these puzzles is simply magnificent, and the number of eyes this channel gets on a daily basis is one of many testaments to that fact! i thank you as always for the entertainment, and well done again for solving quite a beast of a puzzle. as far as the logic of the puzzle goes, there are things happening on either side of the grid independently of each other, which unfortunately you never spotted on the right (like the red digit in r4c7 having to go in r7c8) in some cases, but it was all very peculiar and unique and put together in a fascinating way. you did however at some point need to combine the knowledge you gained on either side to get the initial digits in the puzzle (which would all come in row 4 as you got them). and on this past sunday it took quite the group of us on zetamath's stream about the same time as you to solve this puzzle, another testament to your mind!

Then I got stuck and started to watch your video. I stopped it when you exclaimed about the middle X, where I had found nothing, & stared at it until I understood what you meant and proved what (4,7) was. I already knew it was in a triple in row 4. After that, with the work I had done on both sides, it began to unravel. Sometimes I'm just missing that spark to find the one thing that lets everything else progress.

So much to say. First of all, what an incredible design. Symmetrical about the centre column and no other rules outside of the renbans and thermos which form a kind of yin yang. And somehow produces a unique solution. WOW!!! doesn't do justice to describe it. And then there's Simon. I was able to solve but could not have done so without the insight of where to look. Even after that, I found it challenging but watching the speed that Simon reduces the grid. Amazing. What a break in, too. The left side looks so promising, with a virtual renban of length 8. But it's the right side that finally cracks it wide open, with a "little" help from the innocuous centre. Phistomefel, we are not worthy.

For me the 89 pair in column 2 resolved for me because it created a striping pattern in boxes 1,4,7 that somehow broke it for me but i'm not sure my logic was correct that r4c1 had to be in c2 in box 7. It is funny because Simon had colored the 2 digits in box 4 that way to remind himself that the renbans overlapped by 2 digits but didn't note that it was a reminder and not saying both those digits had to be in c2 of box 7.

After 5-10min of finding nothing I almost gave up and decided to watch the video but started trying out different combinations of digits in columns 1-3 and with elimination was able to find the only ones that worked.. from there it went quite smooth, columns 7-9 were easier with already some information from columns 1-3 and managed to finalize in just over an hour with no mistakes 😊

What a gem, a peach of a gem. I started on the right hand side before moving to the left. I thought my solve was unusually dissimilar to Simon's although I was surprised that row 4 suddenly provided a breakthrough and my first few placed digits were the same as Simon's. For possibly the first time in 3 years I think my solve was possibly cleaner than Simon's (if a bit longer).

I started on the right, figuring out where the digits on the thermos needed to end up. It didn't take me far before I ran into a mental block so I went over to the left side of the puzzle. From there it pretty much went the same as yours. Figuring out that the top of the lollipop had to be the low digits because one of them was on the bulb of the thermo in box one was the break point. From there it just slotted in due to how interconnected and restricted all the pieces are. Then the right side went quickly due to me having seen the logic on the left. Took me 55 mins. This is about the level of difficulty I like living in at the moment, where it takes a lot of thought but i'm not spending half the day on it like Ancient Wall.

Simon was much faster than me, as usual, but he missed sereral powerful *geometric tricks* that would have made his solve easier: 🔹@15:54 the bulb in *box 1* (which I coloured dark purple) must go on the 4-cell renban in *box 4.* This implies, among other things, that the 4-cell renban must have smaller digits than the *dark green* cell. Also, the *dark green* cell is the largest digit along the 5-cell renban and must be 7, 8 or 9 (it sees 6 renban cells in box 4)... 🔹@42:36 *r5c9* and *r6c9* (on the 5-cell thermo) cannot be mirrored on the tail of the same thermo, hence by sudoku they are mirrored on the renban segment in *box 3.* *🔹r4c7* is mirrored on the third cell of the 5-cell thermo (as explained by Simon later). Hence, *3 < r4c7 < 7* (i.e. *r4c7* = 4-5-6) (see below for details) *🔹r4c8* sees the whole renban above, which implies it cannot be larger than *5* (more exactly r4c8 = 2-3-4-5) 🔹After pencilmarking *r4c7* and *r4c8,* it becomes very easy to understand where the *7-8* pair goes in row *4...*
@Paolo_De_Leva
@Paolo_De_Leva Год назад
Details about my third point: *🔹r4c7* is mirrored in *r7c8,* hence it cannot be 1, 2, 8, or 9 for obvious reasons. *🔹r4c7* cannot be *3* because it would force *1* and *2* in the first two cells of the thermo in *box 9,* making it impossible to place both *1* and *2* in *box 6.* *🔹r4c7* cannot be *7* because it would force *8* or *9* in the thermo tip immediately above, making it impossible to fill the renban segment in *box 1*

I use-cased out the left side of the puzzle (sort of) like you, but I think the thing you missed that makes it flow better is that the green and yellow cells that you shaded force the thermo to form a pseudo-renban, which means that r3c3 (which I consider the magic cell of this whole puzzle) extends that renban by 1, now instead of a 7 cell virtual renban we have an 8 cell virtual renban and we only need to figure out if it's missing 1 or 9, trying to put 9 on breaks almost immediately so the composition is basically forced
@RobertGardnerEngineer
@RobertGardnerEngineer Год назад
I just realized that you can break the left hand lolipop down. You can actually work out, once you know where the overlap lives, that the high parity of the sequence is in the bottom half, and the low parity in the top. That also forces the extra digits of the larger renban sequence of seven digits into specific spots. Specifically, the high two digits are in the yellow squares, and the low two digits of the sequence are in the top left two squares of box four. That actually puts a LOT of pressure on the whole sequence, and when I looked at it. It fell into place.

I like to play this game where I try to beat Simon on time and do a "solve along". I start with the start of the video and use the time for announcements to get a head start so I don't get spoiled immediately. This time I actually beat him! Two observations that got me jump started in this puzzle a bit faster than Simon did. In column 2, where can r789c2 go in box 4? They can't go in r45c1, so the renban line completely in box 4 must have at least 2 digits in common with the renban line in box 4/7. Since they share at least 2 digits, and all of the other digits must be different, the "Extras" in one renban in box 4 must be "above" and one must be "below". You can figure out which is above and which is below from the interactions of the thermo in box 1/4. The thermo tip must lie on the box 4/7 renban, meaning the thermo bulb must lie in the box 4 renban. Simon eventually got this corollary, but approaching it from this angle made it much faster for me. Where can 9 go in column 8? If it's on the renban, then the renban must be 6789, which would make r3c7 impossible. 9 can't be in the middle or start of a thermo either, so 9 must be in one of r56c8, which is helpful later on!

I hate to say it but this was not one of Simon’s best solve efforts. I’m pretty sure reluctance to use colouring didn’t help as that was key to my own solve. Not utilising the full symmetry probably didn’t help either. The basic idea was to consider the order of the cells after using geometry. This could not actually be fully determined; on the left hand side, there was no guarantee that the first cell of the thermo and the lowest common digit on the 4 and 5-cell renban lines in box 4 were consecutive (the other cell that wasn’t common could have been between them) and on the right, the cell at the end of the 4-cell thermo in box 6 which was also on the 4-cell renban had the option of being between, higher or lower than the other 3 digits on the same renban. This was partly due to the nature of thermometers not having to contain consecutive digits. It was only by considering the two together and using the other lines that everything got resolved (in a quite brilliant way). Yet another unbelievable puzzle from Phistomefel and not massively difficult once you thought about things carefully.

A good barometer for Mark's vids for sure, but these days with Simon, if he makes a long vid its only about a 50% chance that its because of the difficulty of the puzzle. Either that, or its yet another vid where he bumbles around, usually refusing to pencil mark (or ignoring his pencil marks), forgetting conclusions he already made (usually due to not pencil marking), missing all the low hanging fruit while spending inordinate amounts of time looking for the most difficult and obscure ways to prove relatively simple deductions. In other words, a long video by Simon these days is just an opportunity to beat his time.

@@jimi02468 Simon is still the king of the impossible break-in, and is probably more "intellegent" when it comes to that one aspect, but I wouldn't put him over Mark in over all intelligence. Mark has a much broader set of skills at a very high level when it comes to general problem solving, gaming, cryptic crosswords - both the setting and solving of them. And Simon's 'intellect' is his own biggest barrier at times... like his elitist attitude to putting in basic pencil marks, which invariably makes him miss so many easy gets. Not to mention todays solve was just a chain of continuous bifurcations. .. which Simon now refers to as "case studies". "...What if this cell was an 8 - let's try it... no, that breaks the puzzle. What if it was a 7... no that also also breaks the puzzle" . That's beginner level bifurcation, and hardly what you'd call elegant logical solving.

@joelstevens5670
@joelstevens5670 Год назад
Challenge accepted. Firstly, you use geometry which you can mirror on each side as you go. The digits on the 5-cell line in box 6 go in column 7 of box 9 and therefore the 4-cell line in box 3 (similar applies to the digits on the 5-cell line in box 4 by symmetry). [When colouring where 2 digits go, I suggest using the white colour to indicate when they are not exactly determined (e.g. 2 cells of 3).] The single digit on the 4-cell line that peeks into box 6 goes in column 9 and on the 5-cell line in box 9 (and the one in box 4 on the 5-cell line in box 7). You should now have 3 cells coloured on each 4-cell line in boxes 1/4 and 3/6 respectively. The first key step is to realise that there cannot be any gaps between coloured cells on the 5-cell thermo in box 9. This is because the final digit on the renban now appears in column 8 and any gap would imply that the missing ‘gap’ digit appeared on the thermo, breaking sudoku rules (as an example, consider what would happen for the digits 6, 8 and 9 with 7 being the ‘gap’). We can therefore exactly locate the coloured cell in box 9. The symmetrical logic is flipped since the thermo and renban swap places on the left but it’s the same argument, this time for column 2 and box 1. Returning to geometry, the last 3 digits on lines in column 8 boxes 3 and 9 must go on the thermo in box 6 (and similar for column 2 and box 4). The second key step is to identify the sequences of digits. On the right, we have a 5-cell thermo sharing its 3 end digits with a 4-cell renban. This makes the missing renban digit larger than the other 2 thermo cells, in order to be consecutive (it will either be exactly 1 smaller than the first coloured cell or larger than it), which puts that cell on the end of the 4-cell thermo. The 2nd digit on the 5-cell thermo is now the next coloured cell furthest along (if digit A is larger than digit B on one thermo then the same applies for all thermos where both A and B appear). We now have a 7-cell sequence (not necessarily consecutive) starting with the first 3 digits on the 4-cell thermo and ending with the digits on the renban line. The end of the 2-cell thermo sees the whole of the 4-cell renban, so that digit must be larger than all digits on the renban. This makes the maximum digit in the sequence 8, which in turn restricts the digits at the start (on the 4-cell thermo) to 1 of only 2 options (1,2; 2,3; 3,4) and the remaining digits on the 5-cell thermo to 1 of 3 options (4,5,6; 5,6,7; 6,7,8). On the left, we have a 4-cell thermo sharing its 3 end digits with a 5-cell renban. It also shares its bulb with a 4-cell renban. Since the 4-cell and 5-cell renbans share exactly 2 digits (the other digits on the longer renban all see the shorter renban), we again have a 7-cell sequence (this time consecutive) starting with the 2 digits that are unique to the 4-cell renban and ending with the 3 digits that are unique to the 5-cell renban, which happen to be the last 3 digits on the 4-cell thermo. The 2-cell renban sees the whole of the 4-cell thermo so extending the sequence again by 1. This reduces the last 4 cells to 1 of 2 options (5,6; 6,7; 7,8; 8,9), forces the 4-cell renban to use only the digit 1-5 and makes the final digit on the 4-cell renban a 1, 2 or 3. The last major step involves row 4 and the central ‘X’. The cells on the ends of the 3-cell thermo both see the whole of the 3-cell renban so they are a sequence of 5 digits in some order (again, not necessarily consecutive). However, the digits on the renban cannot include the smallest/largest digit or else the smallest/largest digit on the thermo would have no fill. Thus they must be the 3 middle digits and the smallest/largest digit must be the first/last cell on the thermo. There is also a 1, 2, 3 triple in row 4 which makes the lower digit and row 4 column 1 a 4, 5 pair, so row 4 column 7 is a 6 and this resolves the 2 sequences. [Note that a/b here is used as ‘a or b respectively’] I hope you’re able to follow everything ok (assuming it makes sense and I’ve not missed anything) and enjoy the break-in. The rest of the solve is good old sudoku with some minor thermo/renban logic. 😉
