I think they’ll actually triple the price of the Switch 1 and make it so you can only get the Switch 2 (which will be $800) if you buy the original again. That’s the most realistic option.

One thing I feel is important in Nintendo speculations that I never really hear anyone factor in: this new console is probably the first Nintendo console that has not had Iwata's involvement in any way. And maybe the first without Reggie's involvement in any way since he first joined NOA. We are in totally uncharted territory for Nintendo as a company. I think Arlo isn't taking into account the fact that the original Switch was a mere 4 years removed from the Wii U, meaning PS3 level hardware was around a decade old. If you look back a decade from 2025, where the Switch 2 is releasing *8* years later, PS4 Pro is right on the money, hence Nintendo will be able to offer that kind of performance for no additional cost, right around the time the PS5 Pro is coming out
@Xedefenseform
@Xedefenseform 21 день назад
Yea I feel like people aren’t realizing why the Switch was “underpowered”. It came out when it did because the WiiU was a complete failure. It was essentially a band-aid solution for ninty. Also how did this idea that the switch is weaker than the ps3/Xbox 360 start coming from? Moreover, the Switch 2 doesn’t have the same initial R&D costs that the original switch probably had.
@ethanhaynes7406
@ethanhaynes7406 21 день назад
@@Xedefenseformthe weaker than 360/PS3 idea came from all the re-releases of 7th gen games that ran terribly on switch. However, this wasn't a hardware problem, this was because instead of porting the 360/PS3 version of a game, publishers just ported the remasters they made for the XB1/PS4 with major downgrading. That's why so many remasters ran terribly, but somehow Red dead ran perfectly. Because Rockstar's barebones port was perfect for the Switch's specs. Since Gen 8 and Gen 9 are so similar, this hopefully shouldn't be a problem with the Switch 2

I think it's a lot simpler than this. Nintendo sees playstation and xbox moving away from exclusives and they see an opportunity to take over the console market if the next switch is able to play third party AAA games day 1.
@saintlugia
@saintlugia 21 день назад
Honestly, nintendo doesn't need third party support. Having nintendo first party games coming out nearly monthly is working for them. Having a big game on their platform is good for drawing in outsiders, but it might also take away from sales that would have gone to first party titles. Nintendo first party games sell 50% of all games. Having smaller AA games as lures for fanbase outside of nintendo would work much better as a compliment for nintendo rather then having AAA games as competition. Of course this is all based on nintendo keeping up the monthly release schedule.
@Ray-dl5mp
@Ray-dl5mp 21 день назад
@@saintlugiabut your system has to run the games. BG3 I think would have come to switch if it wasn’t super underpowered. That’s what you’re missing. So first you have to actually run the game. Then you can’t get away with running the most popular games like crap for too long. You can’t takeover if you try that. Gamers won’t all go for that. Yes people with no money will play a much worse version of a game, but a lot of people will play the better version of a game. I think they missed out on a lot of cash by not having BG3 on the switch. Would have been perfect for it. And your argument about it’s good to run 3rd party games less well because it helps 1st party. No, this is a company. They want to make more money. And having gamers buy more games they love on their store is great for business.
@baked7423

@@saintlugia Third party support is important, hence why nintendo has invested into it. This time around they will take that into account more so than ever before. Hence why their new system is seemingly gonna be a big leap at least relatively. They are the one company who can survive without it as shown by the Wii U era but how did that turn out for them? Third party support is important as it gives another reason to buy and stay in the ecosystem. If you knew third party games were coming day and date to next console then u might not feel inclined to say buy PS or xbox. First party games are system sellers but after a person plays that game what then? they'll go on hiatus for the time being until the next big title. Thats where third party support comes in

@NeilHaskins
@NeilHaskins 21 день назад
@@saintlugia There's a lot of speculation that Xbox, and perhaps even Playstation, may exit the console market, because they really don't offer anything more than PC. Nintendo can survive on it's first-party content, so it's possible we'd only see Nintendo and PC as the available gaming platforms going forwards. I think there's a pretty big market of semi-casual gamers that don't feel the need to go full "PC master race". For a lot of people, having a console and knowing it "just works" instead of thinking about specs just takes away some stress, even if they don't get 4K at 144 FPS. If the Switch 2 can support 70% of AAA titles with "good enough" performance, that might move maybe 10 - 20% more units.

It sounds great on paper, and it makes for current gen consoles to be a compelling buy... for _new_ owners. Having never owned a Playstation in my life (well, I now own a PS1, but that was recent, and free) I feel no need to ever buy a PS4. If I wanted to get into that ecosystem I'd buy a PS5 and pickup games for either console as I desire (now I find zero reason to do this now that Sony is porting to PC, but I digress). For existing owners, there's very little reason to upgrade until the cross gen goes away. When the Xbox One came out, I didn't buy it immediately, with games coming out cross gen, games like Destiny, Assassin's Creed: Black Flag, Titanfall, and Battlefield 4 were all Still available on my Xbox 360. It wasn't until I felt like I was missing out on next gen exclusives that I finally bought an Xbox One (in a discounted bundle during an after Christmas sale...) and when the Series consoles rolled out the same thing happened. Only this time I now had a PC that could play everything either generation was coming out with, and with the much more extended support window of Xbox One and PS4 after their successors' release, it's only now four years later (well probably more like last year) that there's even a reason to consider upgrading.

This makes me hope that the new Switch will have some interesting new feature that Nintendo uses in its new games. While I wouldn’t mind a more powerful Switch, the creativity and risk-taking that Nintendo does with its consoles is something I like. Maybe it supports attachments that can extend its features such as a proper VR display with 6dof tracking used for Metroid Prime 4, or an additional screen that allows it to cleanly run 3DS ports, or cameras that extend its functionality further. Something that won’t get in the way of those that don’t want it, but that can add to the experience for those that do.

Probably not going to happen. Both Xbox and PlayStation have struggled with sales by being too expensive and by supporting last gen. @luap911
@luap911 21 день назад
Something to keep in mind is that the Switch completely outclasses the PS3 and 360 in terms of performance. Look at Red Dead Redemption on PS3/360 compared to Switch in docked mode. The original version of that game runs at sub 720p and can rarely ever hold 30fps, whereas the Switch can output a 1080p image that's mostly consistent at hitting 30fps. People compare the Switch to PS3/360, but that's only because the Switch was clearly less powerful than PS4/Xbone. The Switch's hardware also had a modern set of features that those older consoles didn't. On that note, the Switch is also a hybrid console and has to underclock it's performance to have satisfactory battery life in handheld mode. The Switch 2 will be the same in that on paper it will outclass PS4/Xbone, likely even the Pro and X models, but the key difference is that it will have an extra edge by having an even more modern feature set than PS5/Series X by having hardware designed for Nvidia's AI upscaling, which is far more efficient than what AMD has managed. Comparing Nvidia hardware and AMD hardware by just reading performance numbers doesn't tell a full story anymore because of how far Nvidia has outclassed AMD with features like DLSS. Sony knowing this is why they are implementing custom upscaling technology they've developed into PS5 Pro, rather than relying on what AMD can provide them. It won't be until we see games running on Switch 2 that we can draw a full picture, but I dont see any reason to not expect a console that on paper is close to a PS4 Pro (but with a lot more memory), but it punches above it's weight through more advanced hardware features to get image quality similar to a Series S. It will also depend on how well devs implement that technology.

I also don't think a "slow transition" would be successful. Like if you make a new console that plays the previous games, and does all the same stuff plus more that the old one couldn't then I don't think a lot of people will keep buying the old one. Maybe I'm wrong though, cause this is just based on the anecdotal evidence of people in my life dropping the GBA for the DS, and the 3DS for the Switch.
@GAHAHAHH
@GAHAHAHH 21 день назад
When you think about how long ago the PS4Pro came out and factor in anything about Moores Law, there is close to no reason for it not to be at least that "powerful". It should in theory be possible to make a console more than 20 times as powerful for the same price 16 times if they want to sell it for the same price as the Switch OLED and 13 times if they sell it for $299.99 even if we assume the extra cost of making it a hybrid console cuts the "power" per dollar down to one quarter it should still be over 3 times as "powerful" as the PS4Pro. And as you said that's not even taking into account the more modern features offered by current hardware that would make it completely outclass everything that came before in an incomparable way.
@KyleDavis328
@KyleDavis328 21 день назад
One thing that people forget when comparing the Switch to the Gen 6 consoles is just how small the Switch is... it's probably a similar internal volume to the Xbox 360's _controller_ let alone the console itself even at its slimmest (360 E variant). And if the rumors of using and Nvidia Ampere based GPU are true, than at least in terms of hardware _generation_ it will be on par with the Series X and PS5 (though obviously using a smaller power budget). Plus that's generational equivalent on an Nvidia chip, meaning DLSS 3 compatibility, which if Nintendo has been paying attention, will prove essential in the performance of the Switch successor up to modern demands.

You do gotta consider that if this continues to be intended as a hybrid handheld with docking and playing traditionally as a key feature, these specs still put it behind the curve compared to proper home consoles. What if they go for a two console strategy, one $300 model with PS4 power and $400 model with PS4 Pro power, I think maybe only one sku is too dangerous for Nintendo. The $300 one can include some new gimmick for causal appeal while the $400 model is an attempt Nintendo jumping back to the hardcore market. The demands for casual and hardcore switch user is splitting as years go by so this can be their strategy. If anything, I'm betting the "Inter-Generational at Release" game won't be a Zelda but Metroid Prime 4 in this case. Think about how the Inter-Generational move worked for Zelda. Maybe not the main cause of Zelda going from underdog to a steady franchise, but somehow it must have been related. I'm pretty sure Nintendo now wants Metroid to take this underdog to steady leap. They only have few series that could become the 5th pillar of Nintendo after Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing and Splatoon, and Metroid has built up expectation since the praised Metroid Dread. All of this to say that Zelda definitely will not have another game at release. At most, a DLC to TotK, although they already said they don't want to develop DLC for TotK. Regardless, I expect having the next mainline Zelda after 2026. Maybe we get a remaster of any of the 3D games (64 Duology, WW, TP, SS), a Link's Awakening-like remake for any of the 2D games or another spinoff while we wait.

The thing that you didn't account for is that to be as powerful as a ps4 pro the chip would have to run at its highest energy draw, which would mean really low battery life for a handheld. Much more likely is that they will downclock the chip to get better battery life, which would bring it back down to about a ps4
@KyleDavis328
@KyleDavis328 21 день назад
@malachor5ve That's assuming PS4 Pro architecture. Under a modern architecture (which based on the rumors of an Nvidia Ampere-based chip, would be at least two process nodes smaller, 16nm vs 10nm, if using Samsung 8N like RTX 3000, or 7nm, if using TSMC N7 like in the workstation cards, potentially even smaller if they reuse the architecture on today's process nodes) it would draw quite a bit less power. And that's before noting that PS4 is based on x86-64 architecture, vs Switch's ARMv8-A architecture, the latter is much more power efficient, which is why it's used in mobile devices. Now in handled mode there will probably still be power budget constraints in the name of battery life. And honestly, I wouldn't even mind it sticking to a 720p display, the Steam Deck is 720p (+ some vertical height, hence 800p, same width though) and I really don't feel the need for more at the screen size. But I think the more apt place to look for comparisons right now is the handheld gaming PC market, which are running modern AAA games with fair compromises just fine portably. And assuming Nintendo is going to stick with bumping up the power draw when docked, the PS4 Pro comparison still sounds like a fair one to make.

Sorry but… are you 12? Cross-gen games have been a thing for generations. Studios (include the console manufacturer) aren’t going to have a hard drop with the new console because they still have games mid-development, there’s still a huge player base playing the original, and companies aren’t going to want to drop supporting that huge audience for a new, untested market. It’s not like he said “for it’s whole life” he’s just saying for the first little while, which has been true since forever. The first 2 or 3 years of a console tends to have cross-gen games. Some Nintendo consoles have had a hard cut than others, but only because it was either a failure, or Nintendo kept it alive longer than the audience/studios were interested in. But that’s generally not the case, and given Switch has a high attach rate even this many years in, and the console itself has been supported longer than any other Nintendo console, it doesn’t make sense to look at it from that previous perspective because it’s not under those same circumstances.

Its about a PS4 in handheld and PS4 Pro docked. It most likely will end up at $400, I agree that price cuts to the Switch 1 are likely after launch. Nintendo's strategy this gen is pretty clear. Have the the same excellent selection of exclusive titles that make people want to purchase the system, and give the Switch 2 enough power to make third party games both easy to port and relatively performant compared to the competition. @@SteelSkin667 Glad to see someone else on here whose pretty well informed about the specs. You're right, it'll come down to the clocks, and that'll be largely determined by the node. I'm not sure what the DF discord thinks the most probable node is but over on Famiboards the general consensus is that T239 is fabbed on TSMC 4N. There's been pretty extensive analysis done to show that Samsung 8N is likely not a viable node. Orin power data shows that when configured the same as T239 in terms of CPU core and SM count, and running at the lowest clocks with all extra IP blocks disabled, the device would draw about 60% more power than TX1 (Erista, 20nm) in handheld mode. Even assuming power savings from having a single CPU cluster and GPC as well as the additional silicon blocks of T234 absent, T239 on 8N still blows well past a reasonable handheld power budget. To the contrary, there's quite a bit of evidence suggesting 4N. T239 shares Grace's LPDDR5X controller design and was taped out the same time as it and Lovelace GPUs (those also being 4N). T239 on 4N would also end up being only about $5 more expensive than on 8N in terms of die cost. There's a lot more I can go into but Famiboards has already done a much better job. Anyways, given the assumption that it is on 4N, we can expect roughly 600MHz handheld GPU clocks and roughly double those clocks for the GPU while docked. This gives about 2 TFLOPs FP32 handheld and 4 TFLOPs docked. I did a comparison of GCN (Polaris) to RDNA2, and then RDNA 2 to Ampere (I couldn't find many strong direct Ampere to Polaris comparisons at iso-frequencies) and per 1 TFLOP, GCN and Ampere deliver roughly equivalent raster performance, with it slightly in favor of the latter. So with PS4 Pro having a 4.1 TFLOP GPU, if T239's GPU delivers around 3.5-4 TFLOPs docked raster performance will be very similar between the two consoles.

@@2intheampm512 Yeah, we've been running the same numbers, and came to similar conclusions. The only reason why we can't completely rule out the notion that T239 would still be using the old 8nm node, only at really low clock speeds (less than half of what you've stated above), is because so far SEC8 has been mentioned a lot more often than TSMC 4N when discussing T239. Personally I think that 4N is a bit more likely for the reasons you have underlined, but until some hard evidence of it transpires, most of us including the DF team are still operating under the assumption that it'll be SEC8 or a derivative thereof. I expect them to quickly phase out. We saw with the 3ds sales numbers they were a bit disappointing which is why nintendo paused 3ds support. Unlike PS or Xbox, Nintendo's draw heavily relies on its first party output so people will transition for those games. Considering install size of switch people will likely stay on it till a Lite, oled, or a specific game so it is smart for nintendo to still appease that group but I don't know if they want to cannabalize sizes in the long term. It depends on if they want to focus more on software than hardware such as maybe possibly selling the system at a loss. New President and new era for nintendo so we might see shifts in strategy, tho not far removed, compared to previous nintendo

Mario is a fairly simple 2D sidescroller again. I don't care about yarn. I don't want to be nagged about where to go next, and I don't wanna chase stupid baby penguins. I also don't wanna scribble on a screen with a stylus or do stupid gestures when a button press works just fine. The switch 2 just needs to be a more powerful version of the switch with its own games and backwards compatibility. I seriously doubt this. Making games that target an 8 year old Switch 1 as well as a new Switch 2 would add a lot of dev time for every game. I think Nintendo can keep selling the Switch 1 on its existing huge library without needing to make new cross-gen games for it. As for "emulation", I seriously doubt it. Most modern APUs offer pretty consistent instructuon sets, and low-level libraries are also getting more consistent. That's why you can play most 20 PC games with pretty much no hassle. I'd expect the same from the Switch 2.

I think the general idea here is right, but I have a few thoughts on some of the rationale. 1. PS4 Pro level power instead of PS4 power wouldn't really be "Nintendo taking it further than they need to" going off of precedent. Since the Switch has had a bit longer of a lifespan, it would make sense for its successor to have a bit more than a 1 generation leap. Especially since GPUs have come a long way in terms of performance and efficiency in the last 10 years with things like DLSS and frame gen. 2. If the switch is running on an Nvidia T239 (or something similar) like most of the rumors point to, architecture shouldn't be much different to where emulation is necessary for backwards compatibility. As long as they include the Switch libraries for backwards compatibility, they should have no problem running switching games natively. 3. Even if games aren't running natively, emulation shouldn't be necessary. We've seen from compatibility layers like Proton, that modern tools are quickly making running games built for other platforms trivial. Nintendo could certainly build something similar for Switch games on the Successor. Moreover, there are universal decomplication tools making a lot of progress in the N64 space, and that could be another potential option to decompile Switch games and automatically port them to the successor. 4. Even if emulation was necessary, it probably wouldn't need immense power to do it. Switch Emulation works great on my phone, and on a $350 Steam Deck (which the Switch 2 should definitely surpass). But I think the best rationale for all of this is that the Switch will continue to sell for a while. Like the 3DS's late lifecycle, it can continue to be the system for everyone. The successor can be the console for enthusiasts until a bit later when it can have its price reduced and become the new base model. This will extend the lifecycle of the console to hit that 8-10 year mark without feeling too outdated.

The cross-gen game release model hasn’t been this “pot of gold” formula that some seem to spin it as. It devalues incentive to purchase a new system (the only reason PS5 isn’t lagging more behind the PS4 rn is because of early fomo, goodwill from PS4, and third-party. Even then, it’s definitely tracking to be less popular than its predecessor), it restrains developers from utilizing the full power of the new console, it takes a serious edge off of the hype, and ESPECIALLY in Nintendo’s case where their IP and software are their lifeblood, it’ll confuse audiences about the necessity of a new system.

The updated models of the 360 came out in 2010 and 2013, 7-4 years before the switch came out, yet the switch adapted that tech fine Switch 2 being as strong as the ps4 pro is more than a probability, its borderline expected. Sometimes, it's hard to recognize the progress gaming tech is at, what with how impressive last gen was, but the newest thing's were seeing is damn neat photo realistic, something you dont get with last gen tech. And that gen is being more integrated into our daily lives outside of just gaming.
