Yep, I hear you! It's hard to stop milling and start building...lol. If I don't start on my project list soon, I'm gonna run out of places to store lumber! Thanks for the video!
Titanium framing hammer and a few 50lbs boxes of your favourite-sized galvanized nails and you are good to go on the homestead. I keep a 50 lbs box of 3 1/2, 3, 2/12 and 2 common galvanized nails on hand in the barn - save trips to the hardware store! Some people consider a titanium framing hammer a luxury item - but once you use one you will never regret the purchase - Father's Day is coming up! Your project Looks good!
@@PeeksPeakHobbyHomestead Driving Paslode nails with a smooth faced hammer is no fun at all! I will say your choice in framing nailer is good - even with the gas supply issues they are so much lighter than the battery models and they consistently drive trough LVLs
Looking good, yep the shelf idea is a good option. We keep a small portable generator to charge batteries on site, hate running out and it always is at the wrong time.
I am working on getting one of my solar power stations set up there so I will have some extra power when needed. You’re right, it’s always at the wrong time when they die…
You need a proper framing hammer. Martinez has my vote. Been using one for years as a general contractor. I’ve framed so many houses and additions with that hammer, and my joints and tendons have really appreciated the titanium handle. They aren’t cheap, to be sure, but worth the cost.
Lucas: more good info on the shelves. I use screws just in case I make a mistake and I have to remodel what I am building. I will be waiting for the siding video to come out. Take care and stay safe. PS: Pants falling off. Get some suspenders and you will look like a carpenter. Nice!
For your long wall use two boards scarfed together in the middle and have a post from the top drop down to attach them to. Then you don't have to wait on the extension of the saw mill and you can learn a new skill by making a scarf joint.
I AM a retired union carpenter. I won't be one of those guys filling your head with B.S. claims about sinking 16d nails in two or three blows. I MAYBE could do it with a 3" strip nail, but not a true 16 penny hand-drive spike. I think it's B.S. In any event, I've got both the Paslode framer and trim guns. Love them! To me they beat the pants off of the DeWalt and the Milwaukee. Yours looks older to me though, and I don't know if I'm right or not, but I think yours is the NiCad battery, and not the newer Li-ion, right? I liked those versions as well though. They'll sink a 3" nail in a microlam or an LVL all day long. Glad you're enjoying yourself!
Yeah mine is old! I had one just like it and it quit in the middle of a project when I couldn’t afford to buy a new one so I picked this one up at a pawn shop for $75. It has built a coffee shop, a garage and a mill shed since.
Looks good Lucas. Key is to build up that arm strength and buy a bigger hammer lol. Driving nails is tough and if you are like me, you’re like lighting, never strike in the same place twice.
So cost wise with concrete and the post cost I think it would be a little more even if buying the lumber. In this case, I really have no cost in the framing lumber so it is even better! 👊
"I'm curious, why not use board and batten like the cabin siding instead of metal? You would be able to do more saw milling. I found your channel when you were building your garage. I've been working on a 36x56 post-frame building. I installed bookshelf girts on one of the end walls, spanning 9 feet between posts, and it stiffened it up a lot. I have a question, completely unrelated to this video (kind of). I've been contemplating starting a RU-vid channel. However, I know very little about which editing software program to use or how to edit videos. Perhaps you could create a video on how to make and edit videos for us technically challenged folks. I recently retired after teaching auto tech for 20 years. From my experience, students who had a dad (and family) in their life that worked with them the way you do were some of my top students. Keep up the good work!"
Lucas, what was the gun you were using to drive nails? I do not see it in the description. I am wanting to build the wife a She Shed and I need one. Thanks and God Bless
