I guarantee the #1 problem was something you mentioned, you’re kicking back to back and can make adjustments right away. Messi 1 is rotating spots and 2 doesn’t just get to remember exactly what he felt went wrong the last time he kicked “near “ that area. Which was another inaccuracy, averaging the points isn’t bad, but it is harder to shoot from 6 spots around an area making those adjustments than just 1 spot over and over.

The only thing I would suggest to help out your method, would be like you said you’re taking multiple shots from the same position thereby you’re able to adjust your shot. The only thing I would suggest is: - Label each position by a number - Find out how many free kicks are taken on average in a game and that will be how many kicks you do in a session (if you want to do it all in one session use recommendation 3 to determine the order of said shot) - Use a random number generator to determine the order of positions in which you take your kicks. In my opinion this would make it so you’re not consistently shooting from the same spot over and over making it so you can’t adjust if you miss your first couple of shots from that position.

my guesses would be: 1) pressure, Messi is in front of a huge crowd, his team expect him to score, so on. 2) goalkeeper, Messi has to try to be unpredictable and score against proper professional goalkeepers, this also adds to pressure. this sort of thing is also shown in an old-ish F2 video, where Jezza was trying to score against a pro keeper and having that in your head makes it harder. 3) tiredness, doing shuttle runs is a good way to try to match his match fatigue, but I don't think it's quite the same. those are my theories, no hate against Chris, I'm a bit shocked that he managed to keep his accuracy even when trying to power shot them. great video nonetheless, and it sorta makes me want to go back outside and play football, and covid isn't a very big problem in my country anymore, so i don't need to worry that much about that

Impressive, you have a very good shot 👍🏽 As for the comparison, I have a feeling you would have some difficulties given he had the same circumstances. Not sure how you’ve done the math, but here is something to concider: 1. The wall is usally 4-5 people. 2. Messis goal is to actually score against world class goalkeepers. It’s situational. His technique will vary a lot. 3. He probably has a much larger deviation on his speed, because of this. Just a few percent increase in the speed, and your aim will probably be off by a lot. Try having a wall that’s actually 50cm higher, and one man broader, and then try to avarage 1.19. It’s an interesting comparison, and as I said, you have a good shot! But if you were to do this again, try changing the wall, and find the avarage speed of Messis goals. Take 50 shots, count the goals, go through your goals and see if they actually could’ve been goals against a great goalkeeper. Compare goals vs goals, speed in the goals vs speed in Messis goals. Or, try doing the same excercice against a professional goalkeeper! As for the Nou Camp, pressure etc, I don’t think it matters that much, allthough I might be wrong!

First of all, really awesome job. Watching a perfectly taken free kick is a thing of beauty. In terms of what could be the difference. Well firstly Messi is not trying to get as close to the corner as possible. He knows that he needs a well placed and very powerful kick to beat a professional keeper, so his result is either he hits it perfectly or it's way off. You saw once you increased the power the accuracy fell. So I think you need to count how many of your shots had a legitimate change of beating a world class keeper. Secondly, definitely the repetition is a huge difference. Maybe track the accuracy of your first 2 kicks from a spot vs the last 2 and see what that looks like. Great job!

Great video. My only guess as to how you were able to beat him is because Messi knows he has to hit the ball perfectly to be able to score on a 6'4 professional gk, so he is hitting it with a lot of power combined with a ton of curve. He has to get both almost perfect to be able to score. So he doesn't care about having several shots that are really far off target, as long as he scoring a high percentage. You can beat his average accuracy pinned to top corner, but you probably wouldn't have actually scored more than him. Just because the ones he scores bend a lot more than yours and are hit harder. That's my best guess

I think with Messi, he may have a seemingly large miss distance, but as with most world class free kick takers the risk is naturally quite high. So for every few bad misses, there's an incredible goal (rather than consistently on target)

Incredible effort on the video! I think the only part of your scientific protocol that I'd adjust is to truly randomise the position of each shot by picking the order out of a hat. It's definitely not convenient for recording but it would more closely replicate the unpredictability of where Messi takes his next free-kick in an in-game context. You reported the limitations of the study well otherwise. Good work, I'd say!

You guys forgot to note something, Chris took his free kick more frequently and statistically gets better and his goalkeeper isn't that great like world class keepers, while Messi had a longer duration between each freekick, he had to face world class keepers, match pressure and so on. Why don't you give that a go chris and let's see what will your stats be then.
