@@evilfridolin Yeah, i built this list and played with my regular pod tonight... board wipe every turn. as soon as a stax piece hits the board its removed. i want to have fun playing this, but I need something different.
The list looks great. Seems like a really nice natural blend of stax and combat. Looks super fun. Can confirm Winds of Abandon is nuts. The tempo swing is back breaking. Adeline too, I run both in mono white Bruna stax and they're crazy value. Thalia Heretic Cathar could be nice here. At 3 its not super lean but it makes combat favorable guaranteed, as well as hosing fetches. Its fetchable with Recruiter of the Guard too. I really enjoyed this video format too, it came together nicely.
I think the tempo from Thalia Heretic Cathar and slowing blockers is solid. And a 5/2 firststrike, vigilance, trample once Jetmir drops wins all combat.
Hey Ian, I just learned about a card you might like for this deck: Combat Calligrapher. It’s similar to Adeline where it makes tokens when you attack, but it does have some differences that might make it a bit worse. Instead of 1:1 soldiers, it makes 2/1 inklings with flying, which is great since it makes them more evasive. The thing is, it also gives your opponents inklings if they attack one of your opponents too, so that is a downside. However, it says that Inklings can’t attack you so it does provide some level of protection against that, but it’s just a 3/3 flying instead of growing like Adeline does with regard to board presence. Just tossing it out there!
@@ComedIanMTG also what’s your thought on Sylvan Awakening? 3 mana sorcery that turns all your lands into 2/2s with indestructible reach and haste? I figure since you’re a stax deck you’d probably accumulate a decent amount of lands over a game, and it’s a great finisher, maybe more so in casual but just wondering abt your thoughts on it
Congrats on the sweet finish! One thing I'd love to see (maybe in another video) is a comparison between all the winconless stax variants. You mentioned a few things in this video - Jetmir costs less than Kamahl and is unaffected by things that can hurt Winota. But do you think this deck is actually worth playing over Tymna Kamahl? Winota? Thrasios Ishai? Yasharn?
CEDH Giada player here- I have to totally agree with your statements about top-end and having a closer in a winconless deck. I had a game where I killed 2 out of 3 opponents and Winota swung for the win into my sneaky Angel's Grace. I was able to come back from 1 live with Battle Angels of Tyrr from 1 with drawing more and gaining life and making optimal combat swings. Ian, I like this deck and may try my take - Battle Angels also turn on the next level of your commander on attack ;-) CHEERS
I’ve been struggling for a while to find something to get into cEDH with… this I think is it. I love jetmir and this deck is super sweet. Thanks Ian for the deck tech.
Hey ComedIan, excellent vid. I spent some time on Jetmir on release but set it aside, this makes me keen to look into it again! Couple of card queries: - Strict Proctor is another Tocatli Honor Guard effect that also stops some other things. Did you consider playing it? - Caustic Caterpillar instead of / in addition to Outland Liberator & Cathar Commando? - I looked at running a lot of three drop token generators like Goblin Rabblemaster, Legion Warboss, Hanweir Garrison and Krenko Tin Street Kingpin is similar to Tendershoot. With Jetmir, Krenko and 4 other creatures in play you make 4 goblins when Krenko attacks, then 6 the next turn. Or do you think Krenko is a lot worse without Jetmir in play. What was your reasoning for not running any of these? - I noticed you don't run Pyro or Reb, I wasn't sure on these either since the deck plays out at sorcery speed a lot and I feel like i'd rather spend my mana proactively on stax pieces than this interaction. Is that similar to your reasoning? - No shatterskull smashing? - No survival of the fittest? - Thoughts on Signal Pest as a 1 drop anthem? Thanks again for the vid!
played lots of tymna kamaahl but had to put apart the deck bc i was building raffine (also with adeline and archivist of ogma) now im compelled to pull that apart too and build jetmir
I'm been playing Tymna & Tana and I think Avabruck does not cut the chase, 6 CMC it's just too much and while you can force flip him, with just 1 RoL effect in the deck I think it's too easy to turn him back for your opponents. I would suggest Shalai for that slot, while it's white and can't enter with Natural Order or Green Sun Zenith, it provides a decent 3/4 flying body, protection for your board from single target removal and a mana dump that buffs your board, this is a great way to don't over extend. As the meta grew more towards creatures & longer games, people has been starting to play things like Damn and Supreme Verdict, things you could have anwsers to in white, but usually don't feel like you need to run them.
I know this comment is months late, but what about using Stranglehold and cards like Final fortune to kill the table when you just need that 1 final swing. Love the deck, I play JetMir as one of my Top End decks that is just below cEDH.
Love the deck, Ian! One suggestion for the Damping Sphere slot is Chalice of the Void. On 0, it doesn’t affect you at all, but shuts down lots of turbo decks and people behind you who kept for Mana Crypt. As a bonus, it shuts down pacts and Codie’s Tutor. In the late game, you can use it like Prelate to shut off key sweepers. It is one of the cards that gets the most groans from my Sythis deck, for sure.
As another of rule of law type of creature that doesn’t completely lock you out of playing more spells (but also hurts the storm decks), I’d recommend Rug of Smothering. I run it in my Raffine list, and it looks like your creature density and access to vigilance means you can defend you life total pretty well. Rug of smothering is a flying creature that also helps you impact non-storm decks and get everyone’s life lower so the best down plan happens faster
It's really only broken in cedh and they typically and also doesn't really make the play experience for others bad like a hullbreacher stripping your hand or a paradox engine taking forever so I think it's safe for now especially with the recent reprint a d treasures synergies
You're becoming one of, if not my favorite cedh youtuber. Really good reasoning on why each card is important, breaking down what deck each card is good against etc. Good stuff.
thanks for the idea to run the creatures that shut off ETB’s! building a version with minimal 1-toughness creatures right now to hedge against magic’s #1 orc archer
You know, I was real curious how this would pan out when you initially went over it just because it seemed so interesting. Awesome that it managed to do so well in the tournament scene! I def think I'll have to put on my stax hat and make Jetmir or just something staxy
This is 100% the type of stax I love to play. I was a big fan of Winota and Dawnwalker and now this Jetmir is something I'm itching to try out. I love old school beatdown.
1) I'd love to see game play with this. It seemed like you REALLY enjoyed it. 2) Your content is just getting better and better. I'm happy for you and to see you evolve as a content creator. 3) I have a Malcolm/ Tymna deck Turbo Naus deck that I'm considering making more midrangey. Trying to think of ways to efficiently power up/utilize the smaller evasive creatures. Was considering adding sword of fire and ice.. Any suggestions? I like the idea of Adeline with Tymna... think I'm stealing that at least :)
I like the list. One thing I thought might be a good include is Selfless Spirit. Would help protect the board or get a lot of combat damage to go through without losing creatures.
Love your enthusiasm.....and your 10 MVPs lol Just messing with you. cEDH player and judge here and I like your passion for one of my favorite cEDH decks. My other Naya stax deck is Minsc and Boo, Beloved Ranger and I won 2 cEDH tournaments and placed top 5 in another 3.
what do you even call even with a pithing needle/phyrexian revoker? it feels like it doesnt hit/stop enough naming only 1 thing unless its like some sort of annoying win con or stop 1 person.
I vehemently disagree. I've seen them completely take players out, especially given midrange dexks that use thrasios can be hard as a stax nlist to fight
@@ComedIanMTG true everyones pods are different I just dont run into too many effects that I think its good enough. mostly just triggered ones for me and not as many activated abilities like thrasios etc. I just think its either great or a dud. I prefer more blanket/catch all stopping effects. I'm just trying to figure out the pros/cons to putting that one in.
I have a similar cEDH stax deck with Sefris of the Hidden Ways as the commander. His reanimate ability is so insane in this strategy because you're only using creatures and some 1 and 2 cost artifacts, instants/sorceries and enchantments to get the creatures you need in your graveyard, venture and reanimate them on just a 3 cmc commander who's so easy to protect and reanimate in Esper colors. Who cares if spells cost 2-3 more per spell if all you wanna do is dump creatures in your graveyard with looters? Overcharged Amalgam is an absolute boss in the deck and everyone at both of the LGS I play at now talk about how OP Overcharged Amalgam is in the deck. I've literally oppressed and countered every spell and triggered ability my opponents played with deafening silence and Overcharged Amalgam. I've killed at least a dozen opponents by waiting for them to exile their deck with consultation and then entombing Overcharged Amalgam or just discarding it with a looter and getting it right on to the battlefield with Sefris and countering their Thorical trigger. I'd really like to try the deck at a larger tournament but there aren't ever any cEDH or EDH/Commander tournaments near me other than come play one pod for a small prize type tournament.
So I just entered this video and had to stop immediately when I saw that this deck contains 45 (!) creatures. Holy hell. Let's go continueing to watch.
Hey Ian, your Grixis Pirates list inspired me to finish brewing my version of the list called Time Pirates.. uses Pro face breaker, Malcom w Kediss? Malcom w pirates, Magda etc w Time Seive for infinte pirate beats. Obv on bucaneer and thoracle combo too. But the list really layers well without having bad cards in it and it plays amazingly so far. Just gold fishing as of yet. I would love to get your take or maybe even some suggestions if you have a minute to help a fan out 🤷♂️ It’s got a lot of very interesting lines and I have no primer for it atm but plan to write one once I get it dialed in. I’m sure you’d be able to see all the layers. Honestly I think the time seive is super hot and it seems to get to that 5 treasure threshold easily while still having occassional free wins w Buc/thoracle and Magda just slaps in the list. Niv Mizzet and curiosity effects, time seive w attacking for value .. maybe too much going on? Was thinking of chopping curio and I’m not sure I need necro in this list but.. well.. idk? If you have a minute or two to take a look. I def took inspiration from your Malcom Smasher list but it’s for sure it’s own thing. 🖖namaste homie www.moxfield.com/decks/KPBgY1xX10yiGcpjAvkx-w
I don't play cdh but I have a katilda stax deck I've played for a while and agree with a lot of these takes. Trying to win with a few 2 drops is impossible, you need the top end as you said. Since adding in kamahl I was surprised how easily I could get him into play and he made an immediate impact as I had been consistently struggling to close out the game. I'm currently playing rule of law effects and it does feel really awkward making a bunch of mana, being able to draw cards and not utilise them properly outside of dumping the mana in katilda occasionally. This has been really helpful for me to look at some changes, thanks.
I'm currently tweaking my Ishai Kamahl deck and figured that running Grafdiggers Cage and Weathered Runestone would be more effective than Thalia and Vryn Wingmare effects...at least in my playgroup. I do use decks like this and other winconless stax decks for inspiration so thanks.
A potential add for dockside or sol ring could be deep gnome terramancer, not sure how many plains you run, but it at least gets two shocks and true duals
@@ComedIanMTG Heck yeah, definitely meta dependent, with the prevalence of fetches in cedh in my playtesting it feels strong, and you can be a little cheeky with Winds/path/boseiju to ramp yourself too
I am making a more budget version of your deck. I made it more of a creature focus deck and put in Ruric Thar, the Unbowed and Scab-Clan Berserker in the deck. I should have the full deck list at about a week and I'll post it in the comments and I want to see what you think of it.
I've been thinking about this deck since Jetmir has been released, but I'm too obsessed with mono white to make it. I play Rick Stax which is similar vibes.
This seems really cool. Would you say deep gnome terramancer might be a good replacement for the dockside? It triggers off of ever fetch, might net you a few lands every turn cycle as long as you have enough plains to get.
This is so encouraging to brewers out there. A lot of commanders could be built for cedh. On the top end point, I think that gives more points to 'casual' behemoth :3
GGs Ian, this is a sweet deck I didn't expect to play against you in my first cEDH tournament, much less finish top 16 myself, but I'm definitely looking forward to entering everything I can. Great experience overall!
so if I were to make a normal EDH list out of this, cutting everything that costs an arm and a leg to buy (Gaea's cradle and the OG dual lands), you would run dampening sphere? Would painter's servant work with natural order to grab an Elesh Norn? If you pick green, everything is green right? so Elesh Norn is a green creature?
What are your thoughts on Grenzo, Havoc Raiser in a deck like this? I feel like with all of the combat focus, it would add a great layer of pressure on opponents via making their creatures swing at everyone except you.
This seems similar to my Bruise Tana deck I made a long time ago. I like yours more but the core of the deck plays very similar. I went with a more midrange style since I wasn't building it for pure cEDH. Great job on piloting such an awesome deck to Semi Finals. To note since you don't have a lot of interaction for the stack a nice include might be Vexing Shusher. Being able to determine the final result of counter war pays off a lot more then it may seem at first but so many people forget about it the first time. They will try to cast a spell, they get counterspelled, they try to counter the counter only to have the first become uncounterable by Vexing Shusher. I've had people forget multiple times in the same game too.
I find that one of the main benefits of a creature strategy is how little of the standard interaction suite actually hits our things. I have run into spot removal and board wipes being way more relevant than countrmagic
Oh my god I LOVE this list. I've been brewing winconless Karador for the past several years, and we are 100% on the same page when it comes to how to construct a winconless deck; we have to care about tempo, we have to care about having a fat top end of our curve. Watching this video was very validating, since cEDH communities like on reddit and twitter can be a little close minded when it comes to these unexplored archetypes. What are your thoughts on cards like Managorger Hydra? In my experience, it's been an absolute house, and it pretty much always reaches a 8/8 or higher by the time I untap. The amount of pressure it provides is insane, and a single swing can often put a person off of Ad Naus for the rest of the game. Please keep up the excellent work! Creature based winconless stax decks as an archetype has a lot of untapped potential and I want to see more people putting up results.
Great video. The lists looks more than a tad bit different from the original brew and I personally found the changes really interesting to look at. I just brought out Jetmir at my lgs yesterday. It was surprisingly good. I need to make some changes, but it was fun. Your build seems to be pretty strongly centered on the hushbringer type effects, which I assume is the reason you don't include Imperial Recruiter/Recruiter of the Guard or etb removal like Skyclave Apparition and Solitude? I think I'm going to take mine in that direction, but I started off close to the idea you mentioned in the brewing video of wanting those powerful ETBs. When it comes to ways to end the game other than the commander, how many do you need? I agree you need some, but I struggle to find the right balance. I'm currently only really on Winota and Elesh Norn as ways to win without Jetmir, with Krenko, Adeline, and massive card advantage from Ohran Frostfang/Toski arguably also counting. It seems to me that adding Avabruck Caretaker, Archon of Valor's Reach, and Tendershoot Dryad on top is possibly excessive, but it sounds like you disagree. Is there some rule or heuristic you use to decide how many win cons you need in a stax deck or is this just something that you have to feel by playing the deck more?
The creatures on the top end is more of an art than a science. You could probably cut 1 of them but I wouldn't remove to many more. Having access to cards that end the game without having to overcommit to find them is relevant
Hi Ian! Thank you so much for making this video. My first real delve into more intense Magic was turning the Ghired precon into a winconless stax deck to fight my combo-loving friends. While it certainly had the stax part working well, it definitely lacked that top-end finish. I actually have a lot of the pieces for this deck list already, but I did have a question about the lands. How severely does cutting Gaia's Cradle and the OG dual lands for more affordable options affect the power of the deck? I love this deck list, but I personally cannot drop two grand for four land cards. Thank you again, love your content!
The original duals are much less important for this list than cradle. Cradle is a pretty large piece for turning the corner in the game but that being said the deck is still playable without it
Love this, I'm actually trying to do something similar with a creature stack based isshin deck. The main goal is to play lockout stuff and dolem gate to push the assault, and to create a hard lock of possibility storm/drannith magistrate. Its also gonna have a slight bit of combat triggers to generate some value, and my pet card is sire of insanity to really keep couterspell decks down.
Love the insight! I have been playing a tymna kamahl list and I have found that I am struggling against some pieces that slip underneath my stax (gilded drake has been a big issue, but I am hesitant to run anti etb effects due to the host of etb effects I run myself; endurance and solitude). I may look at retooling the deck to be more friendly towards anti etb cards.
That's a really nice list, I've been circling around Jetmir for quite some time myself, but never got around to brewing him for real. I am working on a Durnan / Guild Artisan list atm though, which is a weaker choice for sure and while being a combat based (light) stax deck, it does rely on combos. There are a few options that I am pretty high on though and I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on these in Jetmir: 1. Future Sight effects aka Vizier, Augur of Autumn, Vivien Monster's Advocate 2. Ruric Thar 3. Destiny Spinner 4. Lurking Predators and probably my personal favorite: 5. Grand Warlord Radha
1. They seem fine, as strong as she is Vivien is the easiest to remove so I'd be hesitant with her. The other 2 could be good for testing. I know augur is in my maybeboard 2. Thar doesn't quite seem necessary, but the card is solid at what it does. I just don't know what I'd cut for it. 3. Spinner isn't really necessary. Apart from someone forcing my commander I barely received stack interaction, it was moreso removal or wipes that were an issue. 4. Predators is cool, but an intense investment as well as being a non creature spells. Could be a fun test though. 5. Idk hadn't thought about radha, would need to try it
@@ComedIanMTG I think Vivien is pretty good at protecting herself with the token generation if you're not ahead on board already. But out of these three Augur would be my first pick because he enables land play off the top. I see your point with Ruric and Destiny Spinner. Radha worked incredibly well for me so far, but I'm running a decent amount of extra combat steps tech, including Aggravated Assault, which can go infinite so that's a bonus.
I feel that wandering Archaic has been becoming more prominent in stax decks. With that being said I'm not too high on it but see it's value, and since I see that it wasn't included was hoping to hear your thoughts on it.
It was super awesome meeting you at Gencon and you guys letting me hang out while you played. You look super different in person especially in that cosplay (next day in civilian still different from here lol) thanks for being awesome. Also I love Jetmir in high power so as I start trying cEDH this has my interests. He's so fun, and feels like Craterhoof in the Command Zone and cheaper and recast-able
Love the deck have you considered dryad arbor as a green sun zenith target plus adds to the jetmir count wondering because I am currently putting your list in paper with a what used to be chulane deck and would like to know if you ruled it out for any reason I watched the listened to the live brew while at work in a factory setting so couldn't hear it 100 percent so you may have mentioned it there and if so sorry
This is so cool. Bravo on the finish, and such a cool brew. Crazy thinking about how recently "Winconless (maybe we start calling it comboless stax) was considered a meme. Jetmir top 16, Kamahl running rampant, Charles almost winning a tourny with OG Heliod, Lightpaws top 4ing a tourny...so cool.
@@ComedIanMTG I run torens as a commander ina higher powered deck. Torens is the ultimate in board state recovery. I can rebuild from an empty board with 3 creatures. Torens is essentially just a mini tendershoot that rewards you for playing out your game plan normally. Also the tokens scale as they have the training mechanic.
thoughts on deep gnome terramancer over dockside? i do think it loses a little edge from not being able to turn 1 it but turn 2-3 is still really strong even if you make people not fetch for a turn
@@ComedIanMTG yeah that would be insane vaule if they chose to slow them selves just to stop us from getting an extra land, the main thing I see is getting a 1-2 lands of it turn two being pretty insane
@@ComedIanMTG I know you said null rod it's one of the important cards for the deck. Unfortunately it's just out of my price range is there really any replacements.
