Have you ever checked your omega 3 or omega 6 levels in your blood? If so, what were your results? here is the test kits I used omegaquant.com/ref/533 Here is more info on what brands of omegas work best: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UQfD2mdKAl0.html
I have been snacking on fish products and eating fish as follows: snacks; cod livers in their own oil on a round of bread (amazon); pickled herring, anchovies. I eat wild salmon seared in a pan and cod I make in a court-bouillon or in a butter caper sauce in a pan. My omega quants have increased. Real food works better for this.
@@paprluvr I did make this other video that mentions a few other brands that may be more affordable: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UQfD2mdKAl0.html
Pretty severe dry eye symptoms is something I at 75 of age only recently began to experience . . . for the last 3 months. And, I've had cataracts developing for about 2 years. I asked two experienced optometrists if there were any dietary or nutritional inputs which could ameliorate either of these two conditions, and both seemed surprised by the question; and both said no, and both recommended that aside from eventual surgery for the cataracts in the next 12 months or so, only eye drops and mild heat treatment would help . . . for the rest of my life. This video is, pardon the phrase, a real eye opener. I'm especially interested in the Omegaquant test which I'll followup on. Thanks you, doctor for a well produced video. Very helpful.
I read something about Melatonin supplementation possibly being good against that quote: "This study showed that melatonin delayed cataract formation and progression in diabetic rat lenses. It may increase the levels of GSH, inhibit oxidative stress, diminish the activity of polyol pathway enzymes, and thus protect the lens transparency." Your cells are capable of making it but you need to be exposed to the heat of the sun. There's also Astaxanthin which is a pigment extracted from seaweed. It's what gives lobster, salmon and flamingo their pink color. Astaxanthin has long been shown to defend aging eyes against the threat of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and glaucoma. Not medical advice.
The Omega-3 has been a huge help for me. I don't take the fancy stuff the doc talked about, just the Nature Made from the supermarket. I used to take the eye health formula that Thera-Tears makes, but TBH the supermarket stuff is works fine at a fraction of the price. It's great, if I don't forget to take it my eye will do really well... of course when my eyes do well enough for long enough I'm bound to start falling out of the habit in a somewhat unfortunate cycle, but as long as I resume as soon as I notice symptoms it's not terrible. I've never tested my omega levels though, I just know my eyes stop hurting. It also helps to ensure that my hair and eyebrows are well trimmed (also checking the eyelashes is a good idea, although I rarely have a misaligned eyelash some people get them and need to pluck them) ... if I can pull any hair at any angle to reach my eyes, even if it looks fine in its normal resting position, there's probably a time when it is getting in my eyes and keeping it cut way back prevents that. A humidifier helps a little, eye drops and warm compresses provide temporary but welcome immediate relief.
All the drops after that particular surgery destroyed my wife's conjuctiva and all its microbiome. It took 3 years to restore it with many good supplements and just saline.
To get the benefits of the Melatonin the Pineal gland produces before you sleep, make sure you are in darkness two hours before going to sleep. If you live in the city, block the neighbor's lights from the windows so that you will sleep in total darkness also try to go to sleep at the same time every day. Do not look at devices such as computers, cell phones or iPads two hours before going to sleep as it negatively affects the circadian cycle and may prevent the Melatonin release. The Melatonin produced by the pineal gland in the body before you go to sleep is something that helps you sleep but it's also a highly potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It can help against arthritis and oxidative damage. People who have jetlag from having flown to a different latitude sometimes take supplements of it before going to sleep to help set their body to the new time zone they are in.
I've seen proof that some eye related problems are related to tight head muscles, sometimes occurring during sleeping improperly with bad pillows. Heat really works to solve those things. Hot towels really can loosen head muscles.
Hey thank you! I do have some affiliate links in videos but I try to always have some sort of discount for viewers and I also don't want to push anything. I really just want this channel to be a resource of information for people.
As kids, we were forced to take fish oil, but as soon as I got older, I stopped. I think now I should take fish oil again for my eyes as well as my health! Thanks for sharing!
I use to suffer from dry eyes but since I start to taking Omega 3 for the past 3 years, all my health improved including dry eyes. Thank you for this advice
I am here to say thank you! I sit in front of a bunch of computer screens every day and have always had dry eyes to the point that I can not wear contacts. I had an eye Dr visit coming up and looked on RU-vid for some ideas or inspiration and found you. I talked with my Dr about the PRN product and he said that he had heard good things about Omega3, but just didnt know enough about it? This is a GREAT eye Dr in a very nice suburb of Houston! So I bought the PRN product off of Amazon and it has been amazing! I am now on my 3rd bottle. My 8 year old daughter will look at my eyes sometimes and ask me if I am crying or going to cry. I dont know if my eye ducts (?) have gone on overdrive now that they have the Omega3, but I dont have symptoms anymore. Thank you for your great presentation. It worked for me.
I can give you my personal tips. first check if your screen is has pwm. Its easy to check by using iphone. use video on slow mo and just look into camera, if you noticing any flickers in screen or in lightning, you should replace lamps or change display. second check if you have astigmatism, if so I highly recommend to correct it up to 60-70 percents. Secondly I would recommend use weaker prescription for screen use. It helped me alot. But if you have astigmatism it should be corrected even in weaker prescription. Astigmatism is main reason of dry eyes for me. also no contacts like never.
I'm so glad your video showed up on my feed. I started taking Omega 3 oil tablets during COVID, for general health. About a year into it, I "discovered" I no longer needed reading glasses, which most people post 40 years old will need due to blurry reading. The only thing I changed in my diet and lifestyle once I got reading glasses, was fish oil tablets. Little to no change in anything else. When I went for my full eye exam, the doctor could not explain it, other than to say I still needed glasses to read (for distance, which I need anyway). I asked again: I no longer need reading glasses at all, in fact, I have to take them off to read. Crickets 😂 I also googled this phenomenon and no known cases, or discussions on this, were found. More crickets 😂 Amazing stuff! Thanks again!
Similar here. I started eating chia seeds and other seeds and my eyes got better. The staff in the glasses store said Omega 3 is the current state of science to help eyes getting better again. So keep going :)
I had similar improvement from taking Curcumin. I needed 250 reading glasses and now I find myself reading without glasses. Not perfect but way better.
I’m from Quebec and my doctor told me to take omega supplements for my dry eyes and it helps me a lot. I do other things too but I love my omega supplements. Thank you 😊
I want you as my doctor... someone who seems like they actually listen and take into consideration of the customers questions and concerns(ive been going to a private eye dr for 5 yrs for anyone asking). It seems like others are just there for the check, get you in, get you out. Bam bam. You seem like you would actually get things right the first time, everytime. I like that, i want that, i neeeed that! Lol
I started taking Omega3 fish oil to help with my generalised fatigue. It helped so much, I went from sleeping 12 hours a day to sleeping 8 hours and feeling normal. The biggest change I noticed was my increase in cognitve function. My concentration skyrocketed and my memory improved drastically. I wrote my dissertation on the effects of omega 3 on cognitive function, after seeing such an improvement in myself. Very interesting topic to look in to. Thanks for your informative video :)
Thank you for sharing this currently struggling with oversleeping! Hate waking up with extremely dry and uncomfortable eyes and lots of brain fog. Is there a brand that you highly recommend?
@@SFV_Aurora Hiya, I take the ones from " Nu U Nutrition". However, I take 6-9 capsules per day as the dosage is fairly low. (3 capsules 2-3x per day, is what I would reccomend). I hope they help :) if so, please give me an update in 6 weeks, I would love to hear if it helped you or not.
@@Spoiled365 I currently take 3 per day of omvits omega-3 (found them on amazon) and find those quite good. I´m sure there is better ones, but those arent too expensive. I hope thats helpful :)
Ive taken cod liver oil with vitamin d with a meal and t definitely boosted my omega 3s and vitamin d3 from bloodwork. Agree that the 8 to 12 weeks is where the consistency shows. Glad you did this and that it helped

Congratulations on doing what every doctor should do when trying to figure out what's wrong with someone's health/body. All doctors should take this approach, but we know it's because this type of care would not be covered by 99% of insurances and be too time consuming and unprofitable to make sense unfortunately.
I just did a test now and am awaiting the results. Have been a vegan for five years and the last two raw. And gotten dry eyes and quite blurry eyesight. Started to take omegas from algae and also consuming them and included more walnuts and my eyesight got tremendously better… the dry eyes are still annoying. Staring on a supplement now for vegans that is made of algae but in higher concentration. Excited to see what the results are….
Hey Doc, I started being impacted by blepharitis. This went on for at least 1 year, until I went to an eye doctor and was prescribed warm compresses, pills, and ointments. Nothing worked even after sticking to the prescription for months. Then I started having daily intake of Omega-3 fatty acids. This was the cheapest brand of Omega-3 fatty acids on the shelf, nothing fancy. After a couple of months of taking Omega-3 fatty acids, my blepharitis went away. Now it's almost been 10 years, that I have been taking omega-3 fatty acids daily. I have not had any re-occurrence of blepharitis. I can tell you, that in my case at least, it cured me. This was purely thanks to the internet searches I did at the time. I am surprised that even today, 10 years later, the eye doctors have not come to a consensus that Omega-3 does wonders for the eye, and for the rest of the body for that matter. I can tell you that it worked in my case, and hope others read this, and it works for them too, just like it worked for you, and hopefully one day it will be part of the prescription, rather than the person needing to Google it for themselves.
You have to try Omega 7. I do not have issues with dry eyes but I definitely noticed increased oil production and sense of moistness. I have been taking Krill Oil Omega 3, Astaxanthin, Lutein+Zeazanthin for many years, so the effect I noticed (after just a few days) is on top of those supplements; I tried the Omega 7 for one month consistently; I used Provinal purified Omega 7 (from fish) instead of the Sea Buckthorn supplement. Give it a shot, it certainly had an effect on me. Cheers.
This was so interesting. I also eat a WFPB diet but keep it pretty vegan. The only whole food sources of omega 3 I'm eating are flax and chia seeds. I do take EPA/DHA from an algal source, but it's quite pricey so I only take half the recommended dose every other day. Like you, I've also really struggled with dry eyes for at least a decade. Your experiment has really given me some food for thought. Seems like it's time to do some self testing for myself!
I think the fact that my omega levels were 4.3 on a WFPB diet was pretty amazing, considering a lot of people who eat more of an omnivore diet often have much less than that. What I didn't show was my omega 6 levels, with eating more of a whole food diet, my omega 6 levels were almost too low lol (according to the test report - technically still good but on the lower end of "good". My next experiment is testing out the alge based oil products. Stay tuned.
I eat a plant based diet and have just recently started taking plant-based omega 3&6 hemp seed oil capsules. I’m only 2 weeks in but now I’m wondering if they will work considering this experiment suggested that we absorb it better from non plant-based sources. I just can’t bring myself to take fish oil….
@@LyraDavis I would try to take it from an algae source, which has DHA and EPA. I don't think hemp seed oil would have either of those, probably only ALA.
I am mostly interested in omega 3s for the cardiovascular and brain/mood health, with dry eyes a secondary symptom I’d like to address. Is there any reason that the PRN oil would not meet those needs? It seems high-quality and pure, and I can’t imagine there is anything extra in it, right?
Omega-3 eliminated my eczema. I take two capsules per day. My skin is now nice and soft and moist. My eyes were also feeling dry and irritated, but are better now. Maybe it's all in my mind, but I think my eyes look brighter and less red.
Thank you for sharing! I was a vegeterian for 10 yrs and I stopped in 2003.Now that I eat a balance diet with animal protein every day; I noticed alot more energy and feel better! The NO was better when I was a vegeterian but my gut feels better now, and I am not bloated on a daily basis like before.
My wife takes the PRN brand fish oil Omega 3 for psoriatic arthritis and she claims they really work for her. She is a nurse and rather skeptical of vitamin and supplement claims. One note is that PRN are not an inexpensive choice but quality comes at a price. They do work. One side benefit is it really helps control your cholesterol as well. So joint pain, cholesterol and dry eye benefits all from one supplement. When comparing omega 3 supplements, look at the EPA and DHA content. PRN brand has much higher values than drug store brands
Gosh, this is interesting. I've been taking Omega 7 (Sea Buckthorn oil) for a couple of years now and I find it helps (along with compresses, eye wipes, eye drops, etc) but I'm tempted to try Omega 3 instead.

Dr. Allen, thank you for the informative video . I want to express my gratitude for sharing your knowledge. I have severe dry eyes, and I tried taking the HYDRA PHYT 500 mg omega-3 supplement for three days. Unfortunately, I experienced heart pain and had to stop. However, I experimented by chewing the capsule once every two days instead of swallowing it, hoping to avoid the discomfort. Thank you
Sorry to hear about the heart pain, that is something new I have not heard of happening before. Did you report that to your doctor at all? If so, what did they say?
Let me tell you my experience with Niacin. I started takin it to lower my LDL. After only 7 days of taking this supplement I started to have the symptoms of dry eyes, something that I never suffer off before. After I found out the Niacin cause dry eyes, I inmediately stop taking it and is almost 2 and a half weeks since I am not taking it and my eyes are feeling much better.
Pretty good info Doc, however you should know that blood cells take about 120 days to renew, meaning you should have taken the O3's a bit longer. The Test is rather basic and doesn't say much other than the index. Theres better tests out there more comprehensive including cell membrane fluidity. Also careful with selecting cheap Fish Oil, as you can imagine fats stored wrongly can go rancid fast. Thanks for sharing this tho.
The Vikings took cod liver oil during the year because of the lack of adequate sunlight & UVB rays for their body to make vitamin D. It may be that lack of vitamin D (& food) leads to anger. Untreated Teeth decay also leads to anger & blood poisoning & disease & death.
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to dry eye! Between the fortified foods and the supplements I take I generally get around 2000mg of Vitamin D a day. On top of when I get outside. But I think a lot of variability has to do with diet and lifestyle.
I was diagnosed with Coats disease at 34 years old (last year). I started to take Cod Liver Oil because I'm living in a country where there is no sun during winter, and I was getting really depressed. I tried taking supplements, and it made me vomit, so I looked for a better source of vitamin D. Not related, but I did see a severe improvement in my condition after taking the oil. I think people should actually consider it to have a significant impact. I needed cryo and laser, but it really helped me.
Always so interesting with the omega 3 levels! I want to try this on myself in the near future, interesting and exciting results you came across. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the information! I have dry eye likely from wearing and (foolishly sleeping in) contacts when I was younger. At 40, i was diagnosed with dry eye and given a very expensive prescription for Xidra. I should probably use it more consistently, but I'm not great about using it unless my eyes are bothering me. My Optomologist never mentioned trying Omega-3 Fish Oil, so this was very interesting. I appreciate the extensive research you conducted about using a Triglyceride Omega-3, 2,000 mg with 2-3 times the EPA to DHA. I placed an order for a 2 month supply of the De3 Omega with Vitamin D3. Looking forward to seeing if I see similar results. Thanks again for all the legwork.
Hi, sorry had to bail ess then 4min in. I dump news stations that I wanna watch when they start playing the never-ending commercials... i'm sure there's some quality information in there. Thanks.
Thank God. I’ve been using fish oil for nearly 4 weeks in lesser dosage and I no longer feel like sand in my eyes 😂 plus I had an occlusion of a vein in my retina which left a mark on my vision within one year it has faded now nothing. 🙏🏽
I dont have a eye problem. but I found you video very very compelling, easy to listen to and watch . plus some of the comments on here are very interesting. excellent presetation.
One important issue with using Omega-3 is that there's an increase in levels of low-density lipoprotein (LDL, or "bad") cholesterol. This could obviously be a serious issue for those with high LDL levels and who are trying to lower their LDL level. I know from my own experience when using Omega-3 that my cholesterol levels went up. So, I'm sceptical about using them. But I have serious dry eye issues as well. Not sure if I should give Omega-3 another go. Plus, I'm a diabetic as well.
I had dry eye problems since 2015, I came across a research where 70% of patients had improvement after having cod liver oil. So in 2016 I started having cod liver oil, after around 4-5 weeks my dry eyes started improving and after few more weeks the dry eye problem was completely gone, Its 2023 and I do have fish oil now to, however not very regularly, last 7 years I have not had any dry eye problems.
I've just got started with interventions for my dry eyes. It's been several months. I do the eye hygiene routines 2x a day, I use a special lubricating eye drop formula 3x a day, and I do the warm/moist compresses 2x per day. I've been taking fish oil supps for many years now, but I think that I need to find a better brand with the appropriate dosage. I have noticed some improvement in my dry eye condition and anticipate further improvements as more time goes by.
I had low sugar, itchy eyes, inconsistent sleep, low energy and headaches..Solved all that with going off the vegies and going carnivore exept the headaches altho alot les not totally gone..I had to suplement back then and now my bloodwork is better then ever with zero suplements..But that is my own experience.. Its good that u test it ureself and speak out off rl experience and now instead of 1 fisch lunch i will go 2/3 a week..So thank u for ure contribution.😊
I love a video like this, where you do X for Y and then test the before an after. I suffer with dry eyes, I take krill oil. I'd like to see if krill oil would work even better.
Good work doc. Unlike a lot of doctors who talk about products, but never use them. Any who... I'm a Salmon and Sardine guy, but have you ever tried putting Castor or Moringa Oil on your eyelids before bed? I do see your video on Castor Oil in the eye. Let go check it out now. 😁

I’m 67 yrs old. Been taking fish oil w/ omega 3 for decades. I’ve had dry eye problems for years, plus I’m now having retina issues. So, it hasn’t worked for me in the eye health arena.
I have been taking TheraTears Omega-3 supplements for many years, and they absolutely help my dry eyes. I am able to wear contacts again. And I say this as someone who thinks most supplements are a waste of time and money. I'd say if you have dry eyes, they are at least worth a try for a few months.
My 75 yr old mom gets Lovaza ( filtered omega 3 ). She had an extra bottle she gave me. Our elderly dog was having Symptoms of doggie dementia ( standing in corners, pacing around, stuck behind a chair ) . On a whim, we started to cut & pour the fish oil on her senior dry dog food. Within a week her symptoms got dramatically less.
Subbed! I have dry eyes like you and have been advised to do warm compress every night + eye drops. My eyes are feeling better and not so heavy and tired. Will check out your other videos on how to clean the eye lids...but Dr, you are tugging your eyes too hard! As a person who used to work in skincare industry, I grimaced at how roughly you tugging at your eye area...lol, it's coming from a place of love! Thank you for sharing your self study, i was supposed to start eating cod liver oil capsules, will be starting soon and looking forward to seeing if it works to improve my dry eyes.
I have never read or heard of bipolar or depression as a contra indication, but this would be a question for your local doctor as they will know your medications and history. But thanks for asking as I will keep an eye out for more info on that.
Im using Omega 3 right now, with D, an A vitamines. It wont fix my schzophrenia, but it will help my brain, mitigiate it or slow it down. Being healthy is a gift.
Very interesting thanks. I've always had dry eyes because my whole tear gland system is very slightly shrunken/stunted due to having radiotherapy as a child to cure retinoblastoma. Hopefully omega 3 might help at least somewhat
@DoctorEyeHealth sorry just getting back to you! I renember I did once have some plastic plug things put in on a routine visit to the eye hospital but they overcompensated and created too much tearage so they took them out at the same visit. Perhaps it could be something to look into again as this would have been around 1990.. Do you prescribe them much?
I recommend algae based oils with EPA/DHA as it’s more ethical, uses less resources, better for the environment and biodiversity and doesn’t contain harmful substances like fish oils (as it’s not resourced from our polluted waters), if third party tested.
Hello, I'm a French MD and I have been interested in omega-3 and omega-3 supplementation for quite a long time. Like you I have done n=1 experiments with OmegaQwant and exchanged emails with experts on this topic. My main concerns are : no data supporting long term omega-3 supplementation for big health outcomes, purity of pills and supplementation might vary a lot, the omega 3 index is not well correlated to a better health or omega 3 consumption. I say this because French living on the coasts have been studied in the Calypso study. With omega 3 evaluations similar to omega-3 index. Their index is not that high (around 5) and yet their outcome is far better than other population. It might be that there is some kind of genetic variations (and ceiling) in omega 3 absorption and incorporation in the RBC membrane... so the test becomes a bit useless... I have written a long piece + sources and articles on my personal blog in French (translation tools are great this days...) if you are interested in this kind of topic.
Please consider some of Ray Peat’s nutrition advice, he and many others believe that omega 3s are even more pro inflammatory than omega 6s due to their greater degree of unsaturation and greater number of reactive allylic carbons
Thanks, very informative. I wish you had checked your lipids before and after as well to see its effect on LDL an HDL, I would guess both improved in numbers.
On the ones I am using we actually have an information printed regarding this. Since OM3 lead to increased transformation from VLDL to LDL and later HDL, the consumption should show a temporary increase in LDL especially if your diet has high fat content.
If you have dry eyes and you’re specifically eating plant based diet and limiting any types of fats. you’re probably deficient in vitamin A and similarly vitamin D and E. Vitamin A is very important to eye health and vitamin D and E both support and enhance the facts of vitamin A, in terms of eye issues.
I just watched a video of another doctors channel and he recommends taking the omega 3 at night before bed with a meal because it limits the possible chances of sticky platelets in the blood or having rising blood pressure that can cause strokes or heart problems with a study of many people having heart attacks in the mornings because of this.
What about castor oil,Puerto always use alots of castor oil for all kind of ailments, , can castor oil be beneficial for dry eyes ?awesome tutorial, thank you for the information,,,Zoe
I take between 6 and 10 grams of omega 3. DHA/EPA majority. I have dry eyes I think associated with diabetes 2. My sugar is under control now but low or high sugar levels seem to affect my eyes. I don't wash my eyes or do anything for the dry eyes. Just deal with the tired feeling. I will wash my face if the eyes are bothering me a bunch. Don't think I need to test my omega levels. I'm sure they are through the roof.
I watched this video thinking it was about all possible benefits of taking this supplement. It’s somewhat disappointing to see it is only about possible benefits for those who suffer from “dry eye”. The video should be re titled to clarify this.
Can you try and see if the Bryan Johnson dry eye device that he uses works? Video Title: "Blueprint seeks a standard of care that is far greater than what we've come to accept"
I have used everything in the book and now I tried peep club eye wand from uk and it has bettered my meibonian gland dysfunction. I am looking forward to get my meibonian gland probed.
Did you notice any other health benefits besides the eye dryness improvement? Since Omega 3 is supposed to help with inflammation and brain function and your test results show that your Omega 3 levels went up significantly I'd imagine that you might also notice other improvements as well.
I know I was in a better mood, but that is tough to toss up to just omega 3 because I have also been working out more, sleeping more, having great sessions with my therapist and there was also a season change (winter to spring) which helps my mood. But I had friends all tell me my skin was looking really healthy (which was odd because I did not bait that compliment)
@@DoctorEyeHealthHi Doc, my hair is dry for many years and when i started taking fish oil my hair became shiny and healthy. I can also notice the glow in my skin too.
