Hi friends! I am so happy to have participated in this challenge hosted by‪@StephanieCanada‬ who was kind enough to share her traced version of Butterick 6015! Even though I started later in the day than I wanted, my completed time was 2 hours and 26 minutes! What a whirlwind! I can’t wait to make a million more of these dresses.
You can find Stephanie on Instagram as @backroomfinds or Tik Tok as @likethenorthcountry
Sorcial shoutout to @SewingSilly for the cleaned up version of the pattern.
Disclaimer, I did take the reveal and wrap up footage a couple days after finishing the dress. It was snowing when I finished and since this is a Summer dress I noped right out of that one. But with Michigan weather being the way it is I only had to wait two days for the weather to hit the 70s. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Aesthetic footage is worth the wait and unpredictability of Mother Nature when the alternative is the unattractive task lighting in my sewing room😂
If you would like to follow along with my sewing process as I work on projects, or would like to see a little more behind the scenes, you can find me on Instagram or Tik Tok as @kaitybower

I did a double take when I saw this as a video on UTube! Years ago my mother was quite the accomplished seamstress who was self taught. She made a number of pieces of her wardrobe. She actually made this dress for herself back then. To give you some perspective, I believe that was in the 50’s. I am now 75!

At 72 , I too have wonderful memories of my mother's beautiful sewing ! While we did not need to make our clothing to save money , we did it to be unique , creative & have our own special looks . From formals to swimwear , we loved choosing patterns & fabrics ! I showed horses & just like my dresses , you didn't want to have the same outfit as anyone else . Sewing is a lifelong skill & enjoy learning more . 💗

Same here! I’m jealous at your talent. I actually found the pattern on ETSY for 17.00, which I thought was an okay price. What I am wondering, is it one piece? What I mean, do you step into it, then pull the top over your head to secure in front? Thanks for the demo. Love it!

I think you did a fine job, and yes with some torso and shoulder adjustments it will fit you nicely. The extra waist buttons will make it more stable, this dress was designed for someone with a 1950s wasp waist, don't forget, lol! I am glad you mentioned that it looks best with a petticoat. I watch channels where people express disappointment in how these vintage garments look when sewn up, and complain that they are limp or frumpy, etc...I think modern people are missing something here. Namely, to get a true vintage look you need correct undergarments to act as a foundation. My grandmother was always going on about proper "foundational layers" such as bras, slips and girdles. It's hard for us to believe now, but even slender women wore girdles back then, to nip in the waist and create the desired 1950s silhouette. Without these ingredients the garment will not wear as expected. It was also much more common back then to starch and iron cotton fabric, which gave it more body. I enjoyed watching you create your own version of the Walk Away Dress.

@@susanrussell8195I totally agree! I found the first comment honest and wholesome. She only agreed with the shoulder comment, which in my opinion was completely honest and needed. The shoulders were too long and while the channel stated she did it thinking she needed to but, found it to be a mistake. We can all agree the dress looks nice on her but, would look lovely more tailored to her shoulders!

Last time I was at JoAnn Fabric was right before a season change (when they release new fabrics and new patterns). They usually have fully stocked drawers of patterns, but it was slim pickins right before the spring/summer patterns were released. Side note: I really was disappointed in the new pattern releases this season, they’re all so mid. Even Vogue was a letdown, and I usually like their pattern designs and fit, even if it’s not a design I’d wear.

Lovely dress - well done...... To your point about petticoats : underskirts, slips, petticoats, whatever you want to call them will **almost always** improve the way your dress/skirt hangs/falls. Especially those made in a "silkier" fabric, such as polyester/nylon/silk. (Cotton slips are lovely, but can create surface friction between the slip and your dress/skirt, thus impeding the flow/hang of your garment). xxx💖💖💖

Hey, wow, I actually made that dress 13 years ago when I first started sewing! It was probably one of my most-looked-forward-to patterns, because my whole reason for wanting to learn to sew was to make retro dresses. 😍 On mine I did an aqua fabric with tiny brown dots for the front and a solid dark brown for the wrap-around. I felt soooo legit whenever I wore it (with a crinoline underneath) that it felt more like a costume, so I wasn't confident enough to wear it often. 🙈😅

I don't know why this video was suddenly recommended to me, but strangely I have this pattern in my collection and have never used it (I was much thinner when I bought it, and for years was too afraid to "mess it up"). Thanks to your inspirational triumph, I'm going to get that sucker out of storage, go get some thrift store sheets (and drapes -- I love making skirts from drapes) and see what I can do. I once spent 38 straight hours making an authentic hakama and kataginu for my son (lots of time on the floor with a ruler and chalk). Good idea using the bed sheet. My mother was a seamstress supreme, self taught. She could make anything from cloth, often using patterns she designed. When working a pattern she'd not used before, she'd cut it from old bed sheets so she could make adjustments before cutting from brand new cloth.

Awesome! I have to enlarge the pattern by 25 inches all around. I'm not sure I'm going to get it done by the deadline because of that and because of my weird life.

Totally understandable! I got very lucky I was able to find a day to make it work! 😂 I’m not able to sit down and sew uninterrupted like that very often. I hope to see yours soon!

I made 4 dresses like this till today an I still love them. First thing I considered was that the today-material = elastic needs many changes. The first materials I took= cotton, the pattern fits 100% then.

Your video caught my attention because I bought this pattern years ago and made the dress. Exact fabric as on the cover; spent a lot of money on it. It looked like something out of an I Love Lucy episode with the model (me) being Lucy. It was horrific. I was truly sad it didn’t fit well. You did awesome; great job!

I have an original pattern that is too small for me and rather than having the snaps at the front I added ties long enough to tie at the front or back and it's the best dress ever!

Cute dress. My mom, grandma and aunt all sewed a ton and we have BOXES of patterns at the family home. This one is probably buried in there somewhere. Maybe someday we will have another seamstress in the family…😊
