Thanks everyone for the supportive comments. I see more and more scams now on FB and it's not just cars. People will DM you about something they want to buy from you and ask you to confirm via a txt to your mobile so watch out for those too.
You can google the image to see if its used else where. I bet they haven't taken their own pictures. What FB should be doing is checking on one of the car price trackers, throwing up any cars that are way off what they should be and other flags. It's not difficult.
i just subbed to you i seen you had 499 subs and i wanted to make it a even 500! but ya these scammers doing scams is getting out of had! the only way those toyota would be 1200$ would be if it was wrecked, had a lien on it or was just driven and had like 500k miles on it i got scammed once it was for buying an iphone that was 40$ basically the guy blocked me whe i asked when you gonna mail it out... i ended up filing a despute with my bank it took a month but i did eventually get the 40$ back
We all know Facebook sucks. Unfortunately Craigslist sucked more. Facebook and eBay are absolutely complicit, and the police don't have the resources for anything non violent.
@@RigginTheRod010 Facebook spent billions on a Zuckerberg vanity project and you think they really can't do anything about obviously fake ads? Gullible.😪
You're actually the push for me to get my degree in Information Technology so that I can protect people from heartless people like this. Thank you for all you do 𝐕𝐚𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐭, you're a genius with a big heart and principles. Support and Respect from Britain
I caught an eBay car scammer today. Same kind of backstory. once I recognized it as a scam I'm in the process of wasting as much of their time as I can stand.
This man really Hit the ground running and hasn't stopped yet. He gives us more understanding of him without interviews and negative antics he just shows us who he is through the Recovery. It’s sad how scammers prey on innocent people especially ones that are down on there luck looking for a good deal and don’t realize it’s a scam. Thanks for showing this video a lot of great info here.
You'd think that even the gullible wouldn't fall for a way way way too good to be true price for this vehicle in mint condition with that mileage, especially with current hyper inflated prices and especially with Toyotas. They might as well be posting mint 10-20 year old Lamborghini's under 100k for $100 because they need a "quick sale", and people would fall for it.
@@aconformist1 Can't always assume it's a scam; although it is good to be skeptical in this economy/these situations. My friend's grandma sold her seemingly mint condition 2008 Honda Civic for $500 a few weeks ago and I feel like a dumbass for not taking her up on it in the current car market. She was fairly legit and super up front on why she was selling it for so low too. She said she took it to a mechanic and they said it'd need at least $1200 worth of work and since she already had a car to replace it and is on a fixed income; she no longer saw it as viable to fix. She said she'd rather pass it onto someone who needs it and is willing to put in the work. I don't have a car mind you, but can borrow from my family like I've been so I passed. Didn't want to potentially get stuck with a lemon or a money pit of perpetual repairs if it turned out to be more work that what she knew. But yeah; there are legitimate people selling cars for the low. You just gotta actually meet someone reputable.
@@aconformist1 That's quite an exaggeration about the lambo analogy you gave there, but realistically, there are some gems out there that would be worthwhile to look into. Ofc this could be me coping about the fact that scammers are ubiquitous, but if there isn't any serious red flags on the seller's account or anything out of the ordinary, why not look into the post? Edit: I made the comment before watching the entire video, and now i see where you are coming from, at least if you are referring to the gullible who would take the deal outside of FB Marketplace...
I am on FB Marketplace all the time and I see these things routinely. One red flag I always notice is that they say “no liens or encumbrances” somewhere in the description. I played the game with one once and it was very similar to this one. Military leave, death in the family, didn’t want to put the vehicle in storage. Thanks for the video!
They'll always say something that 99% of people won't say, so its very obvious. Obviously some people have language barriers so their English/grammar won't be perfect, but personally I find it pretty obvious whenever its a scam, I'm not sure how people even fall for these.
Always remember this simple advise: If an ads looks too good to be true, it's because it is (not true). The more annoying part is that Facebook never enforce anything on Marketplace. Each time I tried to report those scammers ads, nothing is done and their listing never gets pulled down.
I suspect that the tech companies could easily get rid of most of the scams if they wanted to, but they don't. I don't use Facebook, but I've reported obvious scammers on Ebay and nothing was done. Google and Facebook both allow scammers to buy advertisements. They're probably making a calculation and concluding and letting the scammers do their thing will result in greater profits for them. RU-vid is owned by Google, so Google should either delete or shadowban my comment because if users are allowed to communicate ideas like these, it's really not good for their business. I'd be surprised if they actually let us write back and forth.
We are getting the same scams over here in england & no matter how many times i report them to fb & block the profile/s more & more pop up. Fb do not do anything to stop this even if they know it's a scam, but a new law has just been passed in the commons that sites like fb can be prosecuted & fined severely if they allow these scams to operate without checking, so maybe in time they will have to check these bogus scams & stop them automatically, but the worse part about it is they are using innocent peoples fb accounts to rob people of their hard earned cash. If i know it's a scam just by reading the ad then SURELY fb must know, but just turn a blind eye.
I almost felt for a 2004 Tacoma for $1200, It was gonna be my first car, I stopped trusting on the scammer when they told me in which way I need to process to pay the truck via eBay gift cards, what I did is I wasted their whole time like ~2 days until I told them I'm not longer interested on it, and they responded "Oh my God, really????? thanks for waisting my timeeee!!!!". and I lol'd and I just learned that I need to be cautious when It comes to buy a car online.
I almost fell for it a year and a half ago, and they used the same playbook for my case: fake ebay motors, gift cards, and senders addressed supposedly in Fort Belvoir Virginia, and military widow. Fortunately I did not incur any economic losses.
Yup basically the exact same thing I went through looking through marketplace. There’s so many scams that I just started reporting all of them. Not sure what FB does about it, but there’s more scams then actual cars right now
What about when they give ya the run-around? Example: “Yeah, it’s my friends car but, he lives out of town & I have his car here at my house” type of sh!t! 🤬 What scam is that!?
Just for kicks, I once played along with the scammer. Allegedly, the vehicle was already wrapped up for shipping and the seller was on a base in So. Cal. When the scammer said the name of the base, I said, “Perfect! My brother is there too so he can go see vehicle and deliver money in person.” Credit cleats after that.
Good on you to excite the greedy scammer. I had done likewise but with a flat/appartement I was hire/rent out in Europe, I was to send them the money and they would send me the keys since they wouldn't be there, but in London. I told them good, I'd be in London and we could do the exchange in person--no more news from the scammer. Big scammers everywhere to hire/rent out a place as well now. :(
Thanks for explaining how these scams work, I've seen several Tacomas over the years for unbelievably low prices and figured that the old adage "if it sounds too good to be true, it probably isn't" applies and have never bothered following up, other than to send a snide message asking how many stupid people have fallen for their scam. Now I know how they works.
Great video. Good idea not to share the personal stuff of the people who's accounts got hacked, but you can often see that these accounts have a lot of BS posts. Some offer BS sweepstakes and other things like that. They are frequently selling the same vehicle all over the country. I'm pretty fed up with marketplace for vehicles. Too many scammers. I sold a Kia a couple years ago and just dealing with the low-ball offers was a pain in the butt.
Great video video only in this day I had seen a few scams,I'm looking for a first vehicle but all this scammers just make it harder..This guy's operate the same way but there's also other types of Facebook marketplace scams that people should know to avoid them specially people who doesn't have too many knowledge of digital scams
Wow, great video. I have run across some of those same vehicles, but never clicked on them to get more information. That was really interesting seeing what happened when you inquired about them. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for this video. Anyone who knows anything about cars/trucks, especially a Toyota Tacoma, knows these trucks are VERY valuable and will never be sold for around $1000 unless it is in very poor condition. The market understands the value of these trucks and a good condition one in the mid 2000s can still sell for over $10,000 if it has under 100k miles.
You forgot to mention that car dealerships are one of the biggest scammers. You're paying at least 5x the value of your vehicle. Thank you for this informative vehicle. When I saw that the people have their location in a totally different area I realized that is a huge red flag.
Yep. You gotta wait for the market to go down a little and they have massive inventory which is rare but at least your getting something you know wasn't beat on. Currently with inflation, people are still buying up used and keeping the market high.
They are everywhere. I was goofing off and found a wonderful 2 story house with 3 bedrooms and 2 baths. It was one block away from the Atlantic Ocean. For 1200 a month. They should of removed the realtor watermark. It was 2700 a month. 😂😂😂
Being retired I would spend the evening reporting these ads. They all would have the same basic description, just serviced 3 days ago, lol. I would go to the page which is basically a hacked FB page and there would be 100 of the same ad going to all parts of the US. I would usually report about 30 of each ad then give up. Then they started claiming that their messenger wouldn't work to contact the scammer by an email account. For whatever reason I haven't seen any of these scammers on market place in several weeks. But knowing now that facebook sent out a memo to their staff to allow these scam market ads to continue as long as Facebook was getting paid they are probably just shielding these scammers. There has to be insiders working in Facebook helping these people
Damn I really fell for the scam, I sent them my (Email, Phone Number, Address) but I didn’t purchase the eBay gift cards. Should I be worried or will I be fine?
Scammers have gotten better at home they attract but they all fail in the same way. They miss important key details that prove they aren’t in the same country as you. In America you’ll never be asked by a real person to contact someone on WhatsApp, Skype, email, anything but a message to or a call is a scam
This also happens with R.V.'s also. Just like with the cars, usually it's really nice and way under priced. I checked the link for sellers other listings, and seen how the same RV was listed over 20 or 30 times all across the country. Great video btw.
If its too good to be true, its because it is! Here in Canada, I see alot of scammers selling classic cars like this. Only thing is, I found alot of the images on Google and on old auction pages. Vins dont match of course. Personally I wont deal with an account that is new but yes scammers definetly using other people's accounts to sell stuff. Marketplace is worse than Craigslist now. I used to trust Marketplace alot more because you can go through yhe seller's profile but as you pointed out, cant even do that now. I usually use Kijiji, Ive had alot less hassles on there. I tried selling a cabinet this month, 80% "Is this available" and 20% scammers...i decided to keep the cabinet.
Spotting scams either on fb marketplace, Craigslist or any other online place is actually not that hard because the average scammer is actually quite stupid..
Sometimes this is intentional. It costs scammers nothing to post ads, but it costs time to walk a mark through the scam. Scammers will therefore intentionally post scammy-looking ads so that the most skeptical people won't even bother and they won't have to waste time on people who wouldn't fall for the scam anyways.
I would never consider one normally but I found a Nissan rouge, and older one for $2,400 which seemed reasonable to me but then I saw it was listed in every town of every state
Another scam hitting sellers is when someone says they want to Zelle you payment for an item under $500. They send you a fake email link and ask you to click on it. It will pull up a spoof page that looks like Zelle. It will ask for your routing and account numbers. A few minutes after you send it, they empty your account and because it's Zelle, you can't reverse the payment.
Calling *Assistvictims* a scammer is like a shoplifter calling the security guard a thief. Projection is confusing & infuriating. I hate hearing how aggressive & abusive some of those parasites are to our seniors. This guy is using his skìlls to bring down scammers are doïng fantastïc work! Thank you
Well, you did something with this video, it's gone. Probably moved to a new domain, but it is showing them that people are becoming more away. Keep up the good work :)
I would really like a budget to track these people down and prosecute them - they rely on the lack of accountability of online platforms and the anonymous nature of setting up an online presence. The police are not interested, banks only marginally. The whole thing is frankly a cesspool of chancers operating wherever their activities have little or no consequences to them. Nothing will be done to fix this because there's no money in it and in fact others make money on gift certificate purchases, transaction fees etc
Why does ebay allow this? Seems like something they could filter out. Any super below market deal like this could be easily flagged by the system. They lose a lot of customers because of these scammers. I and many others have stopped using ebay for this very reason. One searches for a car and has to sift through 50% of garbage to find legitimate deals.
Ones I've seen recently have something weird in the title, like 2OO9 instead of 2009, or the title starts with URGENT SALE. I've also seen them where they're listed hundreds of times on one profile in various cities across the country, all with the same 2 or 3 photos attached. There also seems to be some fishy business, I keep seeing them in the driveway of the same suburban house.
It's also so easy to spot the fakes often they post many many of the exact same post, it's so annoying to go through them. They also kinda make the REAL cars look less appealing. How has Facebook not done anything about this when they sensor so much content already???
I saw one listing when you were looking at those Tacomas that caught my eye that's a scam for a different reason. It was a Red 2007 Toyota Rav4 with 338k miles, and they wanted $2500 for it.
My brother's '02 VZ Taco has over 350,000 miles on it. He has been approached by people to buy it from him. Someone offered him $10,000. If it's too good to be true, it is. I will never trust a listing for a large item like a car that only has one picture. It used to be pretty common practice on eBay 10 years ago to have a couple dozen pictures, at least.
I ran across a scam where the widow was selling all of her husband’s items at a really reduced price. What’s up with that? I ran across a scam where the widow were selling all of her husband’s items at a really reduced price. What’s up with that? For example, four wheeler motorcycle, side-by-side toolbox, lawnmower, etc..
5 months later from my initial comment. For many items I listed on FB marketplace, more than half of the people reached out to me are scammers. No change to fb yet
Look out for: “No liens or encumbrances” “Priced for quick sale” $1000 or $1200 vehicles “new tires, tags up to date, etc” “always kept in garage” These are always copy and pasted in the descriptions and as always… anything that looks too good to be true!
I almost fell for this, they have a way 🙈 first it was the good deal on FB. Then I messaged them. They said it was a listing for their neighbor and gave me their email. I believed it. So I emailed her and got the same exact email as the closing Toyota Camry email. It was also a Toyota Camry for $1500. I replied being supportive and saddened that their husband had passed. Then the next email they sent seemed like a different personality almost very dull. That’s when I found something off. It seemed robotic. I tried looking for the car on eBay but nothing. I came to RU-vid and found this video. Thank God 🙏🏻 now I know.
Thank you! I am dealing with the same situation. And when I seen your video it is exactly and I mean EXACTLY! What I am dealing with and before I went any further I thought I seemed fishy so I youtubed it and sure enough! Thanks
I was busting these scammers a decade ago. I'd get up 5am bored, so I'd go on Kijiji marketplace and see all these local vehicles, but would have pics of mountains, cactus, dunes and palm trees. The plates were always covered and the floor always had paper mats from being just detailed. I'd play their game that the car was in a locker, needed money to get it out, medical bills, but failed to realize that here in Canada its free health care. Then after playing a while I'd thank them for their IP and the next knock on the door would be the Sheriff as Canada and the US just passed a cooperation bill.
I see a lot of stuff that is totally trashed, and then it says money owed. Some of them even wrecked and undrivable. So they want you to pay them for it, take it away, and then they report it stolen?
Meta is one of the most advanced technology companies in the world. I find it really shocking how they don’t just code something to automatically flag and delete these posts. Because you can obviously tell it’s fake.
I need to get into this scam . Apparently it’s working so that’s why people continue to do it and Facebook isn’t do anything about it. All u have to do is setup an email script and some bots on Facebook.
I report these scams all of the time on Marketplace. If you click on the profile it will show the car for sale in a couple dozen different states. I feel sorry for the people whose accounts have gotten hacked.
These scammers take advantage of people's greed. That's why the prices are so low. People are more likely to jump through weird questionable hoops for the really "good deal".
One seller tried to sell my car! He had the Hemming ad photos from when I bought the car. Let him know and nothing but, when do you want to see it? He sent back a photo of a car the same year and close to the color with the cover pulled back. Wow, they have nerve.
I got that same exact story today, lol, word for word, just different car. After i seen 2 of em, my suspicion was confirmed, i just couldn't think of how they was doing it. I wouldn't think anyone would really send any money thou, but u never know.
The listing in the header isn't what they're actually asking..it's usually clickbait so you click on it. They show the actual price In the description. If it's still the the same price than obviously it's BS.
I once tried to get the scammers' posts taken down and turned them into FB. I got a few together and sent them in at one time. They came back with they didn't see any violations on their terms of service and let them stay up. SMH.
Quick way to weed out scams is to look for bad grammar and also insist on seeing the vehicle in person. Tell them you don't care if they're there, you just need the physical address of where the vehicle is. They won't give one.
Great vid they're all over fb atm. People are daft if they think they're genuine prices. Its greed from innocent people that gets them to be scammed. People who get scammed shouldn't really be on the Internet as too crazy Strangely enough the prices are TOO low. If they raised them a bit then it might be more plausible
It’s always funny living In the upper Midwest and seeing very clean used cars “for sale” for a couple grand with palm trees in the background. I never understood what the game is with those scams. “If they’re dumb enough to fall for this ad, they might be dumb enough to give me their credit card number” or something? Just seems like a waste of time to me. Seriously, enough of the actual buyers and sellers waste your time.
Great video. I'm guessing these scams happen regularly because I follow these scam posters and notice after few weeks they delete their account. So perhaps it works. Should be a red flag when they ask to contact on a different platform besides Facebook. I know this might be a hated idea but Facebook should add some verification or method checking to these posts. Maybe some basic credentials someway verify sale. 🤷♂️
I have seen this before. Lots of scammers lately. I have learned that if it looks fishy, don't do it. I also report fishy posts. You can often tell if they are scammers.
The whole nature of used car buying right now is awful. Whether its through idiots like these on facebook or people asking ludicrous amounts of money for awful vehicles, it seems really impossible to snag something in this market right now lol
here in the uk , this is destroying Facebook mkt.same car four places, same tag , scant details, I wouldn't buy by remote, I only purchase, i have to touch the car, even then can you trust anyone these days.
