Happy New Year! For J-Beauty I rely on Tina Tanaka Harris. She is in Australia and goes to Japan frequently. She reviews everything! I think you would appreciate her channel. Anyway, the last time she was in Japan she bought 3 mascara removers, one of which you ended up listing. [Heroine Make] Speedy Mascara Remover [the one she knows best], [Bifesta] Mascara Remover For Eyelashes, and [Canmake] Quick Lash Curler Remover. I still haven't ordered any, but they sound amazing. Thank you for all your work over the last year!
Thank you for sharing! I’m so glad to hear there are multiple options, as there’s nothing quite like the feeling of finding a great product and then it’s OOS. The heartbreak! 😭
I second Tina for J Beauty guidance! ❤ She has older videos about the Hada Labo lotions (toners) and creams that are great! I've been using the Hada Labo Gokujyun Premium lotion (gold bottle LOL) and it's sooo nice and hydrating/nourishing! I also love the Hada Labo Gokujyun cleansing oil!@@AliceintheRabbitHole
I used to live in Japan and then went every year during uni since 17, so had been using J-Beauty for a decade (mostly Sana, Kose, Sekkisei, Chifure, Shiseidos drugstore lines and Kanebo) before I discovered Korean beauty in my late 20s during covid when skincare blew up all over the internet. I am more used to Japanese beauty, but it is so simple. I find K-beauty is more innovative and affordable with ingredients, while Japanese skincare is kind of normal, like they use the usual vitamin Cs, tranexamic acid and arbutin in everything, while Korean uses all this other stuff as well like mushrooms, ginseng etc... so personally, despite loving Japan, I am also bilingual with Japanese so can read everything, and also using J-Beauty for most of my life and always visiting Japan, as a whole K Beauty wins for me.Skincare is extremely regulated in Japan, so even some Korean products have their ingredients changed when sold in Japan
Oh that’s so interesting to read, thank you for sharing! The regulations are fascinating too. Reminds me of our sunscreen dilemma over here (although I think ours is worse in that regard, no idea why the US thinks Tinosorb/Uvinul/etc are not good filters ugh). Every country really does do things just a bit differently!
I ❤ Naturie. I have it in a spray bottle in my shower. Now that it’s cool and dry where I live, this is so good and so easy to spray myself down before I dry off. It absorbs so fast and keeps me from molting like a snake. Really any inexpensive Korean or Japanese milk or toner works. I buy whatever I find cheap on Amazon. Lately it’s this one.
@@Jackie-is5kp you might need to add a bit of water to the milk to thin it. My spray bottle has a pretty fine mist so I had to add an ounce of water (to a 12oz bottle) for it to spray easily.
Heroine make also makes a mascara remover, i believe tina tanaka harris recommends that one. It's product i need to try, but i forgot to put in my cart last time i ordered stuff, and i typically order from yesstyle every 6 months or so💀 better luck in june i guess lol
Hey Alice! I looked into the ingredients and I'll send you the Japanese and the INCI names I could find down below. Japanese ingredients are sometimes tricky to track down because if the product is an 医薬部外品 or a quasi drug (like the Lions Pair cream I believe is), then it has a different ingredient name than what you would find in other skincare products. Here's the list for the Lion's Pair Cream. I'll add as I get the lists
❤❤❤ You are just so cute, with THE MOST beautiful, silky smooth skin! I am 79 and started way to late in my skincare journey.😢 I am a retired RN with 3 sons and didn't have time, nor did I know of you tube until about 3 years ago (during Covid lockdown)! Sure learned a lot during those days! Cleanser, moisturizer, mascara, blush and lips were all I knew! 😮 Sorry if I've told you this story before! Lol Recovering from spinal meningitis, which has left me with some brain damage, and memory loss!
@@dianeparks9475 It's never too late! I bet your skin is on it's way! I grew up in the 70s and 80s and we had so few options back then. No sunscreens, and it was all about Noxema and Stridex pads, and eventually you graduated to Neutragena, Clinique, or some of the expensive, but still basic, department store brands. It's so fun to see how far skin has come, isn't it?
I’m surprised I haven’t tried more J Beauty, since the brand DHC was my first introduction to Asian skincare-and I loved (and still love) many of their products. Their powder enzyme cleanser was a revolution for me as well as their oil cleanser. But for some reason, I’ve never pursued J beauty and nothing here really grabbed my interest. I like their simple formulas, but they almost always have a high percentage of preservative, and of course, that added fragrance which I like to avoid. But thanks for this it was fun to watch.
I suspect the language barrier reduces hype too. Even in the gallery on yesstyle/stylevana, there is SO little information on J-Beauty products vs K-Beauty - and you’ll need a translator to figure out what the snippet of information says! But yep, there’s some real hits hidden in there ☺️
Diana is a red flag ingredient for me too, especially when it's near the top of the ingredient list. I'm much more willing to try products with fragrance and the Melano CC essence looks like a good one. I'm currently not even using a vitamin c cream so 5% is better than 0%! 😁
It’s a fantastic vitamin c option, and I can’t even put into words how much their packaging makes me pleased. They DID it, they made a vitamin c that won’t go bad in the blink of an eye lol!
Pair acne cream is a great choice ! it works well w/o drying out my skin. However, Melano CC: doesn't show any result on my skin though. BTW, I have long been a fan of Sana eye cream. Soy is also a good ingredient for anti-aging skin care, I feel.
Happy New Year Alice! Have you ever watched Tina Tanaka Harris's channel? She reviews J- Beauty, but she lives in Australia and has traveled to Japan within the last year, so I'm not sure how many products that she mentions are available for shipping to the US. I do want to try the Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Milk - it's high on my wishlist. Looking forward to watching your videos this year!
Love a lot of aspects and brands from j beauty but ugh it’s so frustrating that a lot of those brands rarely if ever have expiration dates on them and I have to manually look up their batch codes (if I can find their brand on the batch code checker website) and see when it was manufactured and then see how long it’s already been. Being a skincare enthusiast I’ve learned for a while now it’s just better to write down physically on the products when I’ve opened it and how long it’s good for when opened.
See I’m so used to that as an American lol. Brands aren’t required to tell us when their products expire so…they don’t! Gotta do the ol’ smell test (which is not reliable and I do wish this would change!!)
Thanks for another great video Alice! And really appreciate your support for Japan. I went in July and I'm going again in a week, can't wait to get some more skincare goodies. Another RU-vidr named Tina Tanaka Harris often covers J-beauty and she can read Japanese. I love the Melano Cc and my son uses the Lion Pair cream. Also I enjoy the viral Hada Labo premium lotion (the gold hyaluronic acid essence) and last time I went to Japan I accidentally bought the lotion refill instead of the essence! Happy New Year to you!
I hear the prices are even better than YS/vana, which is amazing!! (Especially the Naturie, I believe? It’s only $10-$15 on those websites!) Happy New Year!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole yes prices are super cheap, lowest in decades due to the exchange rate! I might get the Hatomugi toner, if they have a small size! Cheers!
I have been using sun aqua for a year or so and I really love it. I have the pump version and the ease of it's use (as lazy as that may sound), makes me use it more liberally--especially in the summer.
J-Beauty is a 5-step routine, at the most. J-beauty is meant to be very practical and quick to use, and with very basic ingredients, in small to moderate concentration - with rare exceptions. And most of the time, their products have fragrances, except hada labo that uses no fragrance at all.
9:30 - Oh... that's surely where Japanese hair mascara originated... it's just that. People must have started using it to tame those loose hairs and keep their fringes/bangs in place, and then companies noticed. Perhaps.
I found that hutamunji milk at marshals but i didnt get it it was smaller i think and had a mini of the toner with it . They just recently changed the formula and took Diana out of it 😂 Have u tried the new DE barrier moisturizer? Somehow i got a mini sample of it with my order i know i didnt pick it but i really actually ended up liking it alot its definitely for dry skin, i haven't woke up feeling like paper for the past week 😂but i hate that 69$ price im debating. Omg girl i went to my kohles Sephora and the DE Sol De Janeiro and rare beauty section was completely wiped those pre teens are going hard on that stuff i mean not 1 of any of the items in stock expect 1 of the DE lip balms and it looked like a tornado hit it testers thrown everywhere . It was crazy to see. I think i need to try that Lion pair cream , i need to remember to order it next order . I saw the lion pair foam at marshals too random to see , i was hoping to find the cream treatment. Their was lots of random brands J and K skincare there .
I am so upset about how much I like the new DE moisturizer. I mean, it took ALL the self control to resist buying another AzA mask from them (as that’s good too). Now I love the cream too!? How will I get past the 12 year olds, I’m terrified of them 😭 Oh and a Sephora employee posted on the subreddit about how teenagers stole a bunch of DE and Glow Recipe. 🤦♀️ I confess I was a mallrat (those were the days, tbh…) but stealing and making giant messes? Come on, kids, it doesn’t have to be like that!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole ikr ?? I love it too and definitely debating on buying it , I have a Sephora gift card too I might use that on it ! Girl I was at the mall the other day in American Eagle and my husband was sitting outside across the doorway on the bench I checked out and went to walk out the store and got locked in cause abunch of kids got into a fight infront of the door and they had to lock it down because of sucurity and a few weeks ago their was a shooting at the mall same thing kids fighting and pulling guns out on each other it's crazy I don't even feel safe going out to stores anymore and these kids have gone mad abunch of gang banging kids that don't give a F and kill with no thought it's nuts. My husband was gone when they finally opened the doors and I was freaken out not knowing what happened to him and left my phone on the charger in the card so I spent 30 mins not knowing anything. I swear these people feel entitled to take what ever and not care anymore. Infact their was 2 teenager high ass h.ll in the store off something and dropped 2 shelves full of jeans u know the big shelves with a ton of jeans folded yeah they broke them . This all happened within like 30 mins . I really don't remember stuff being like this when I was younger never stole from anyone and we hung out at the mall and it wasn't ever violence involved either granted my x boyfriend was pretty violent but that always happened in school or in a neighborhood were he got in fights not like the middle of the mall involving innocent people .
Thank you Alice It’s so thoughtful It is a nasty start to the year here . Then the plane 😢 . Happy new year to you looking forward to your vids this year
I would love a dedicated video on red light therapy. I trust your opinion and knowledge. I heard near inferred can make melasma worse. Your interpretation on the research would be much appreciated. Prayers for all affected by the earthquakes. Many blessings💖💖💖
hello! just wanted to share my experience with the cc essence. this is my holy grail. it cleared up my skin, smoothed out my texture, and lightened my dark spots! i’m on my second tube and i don’t think i will ever stop using it!
Is it just me or do J-Beauty products usually don't have expiration dates, even for sun screens, which is a bit concerning to me. I bought a 2-pack of the super popular Biore UV aqua rich watery essense sunscreen and could not for the life of me find an expiration date or manufacture date. I finished one quickly but forgot about the second one for awhile and now I don't know if it's still good.
Alice, thank you for this video! I’ve been using the Naturie hatomugi milk for over a year now, it doesn’t have “star” ingredients but it’s very hydrating, I use it after my Kombucha essence and peptide cream and my very dry skin stays hydrated all day long, I don’t wear makeup but I like the naturie lotion mixed with a drop of foundation and my skin loves it and evens out my tone. I have used the toner and is very good also, two or three layers, I love it!
J beauty can be super frustrating at times due to the lack of english, but i have found some gems for sure. I love hada labo's super gel and their aging care cream (red jar). both fragrance and alcohol free!
I just finished LION Pair cream! It worked amaaaazing for me too!! My acne irritation is easy so to control now! 😍 I already have 2 backups at home and will order more. HG. So glad it worked for you too! The more I watch your videos the more I see we enjoy pretty much the same products.
I am floored by how much it helped to add it into a routine. There are SO many products that claim to help with acne, and yet I feel so few that…actually do (or are easy to add in, that’s a big part of what makes this tricky!)
Melano CC is extremely effective for PIE. Definitely a HG for me and I'm not sure how many i bought already. Re: J-Beauty cleanser. Anytime it starts with mystric acid I know it is stripping. The only J- Beauty cleanser I would use is the Curel self foaming cleanser - it's meant for sensitive skin.
Noting that one, thanks for sharing! Yeah it does seem J-Beauty has some more stripping cleansers overall (although I admit I enjoyed using the Senko Perfect Whip cleanser up on my body - actually was a great use for it!)
Alice! Hi! Happy 2024 my friend! Yes I love that skin aqua for my face! I use a moisturizer first and I’ve never had issues with drying despite the Diana 😂 And oou I love seeing sugar squalane in the inci of the SANA soy milk serum! I truly wish more brands would disclose whether they use the olive or the sugarcane version of the oil because one of them does NOT break me out and the other does damage
I use that skin aqua gel sunscreen. it has alcohol because it is a “gel type” sunscreen for oily skin. Since I have dry/combination, I use a thicker moisturiser (LRP lipikar AP) then skin aqua gel sunscreen to offset the alcohol in it.
J-Beauty mascara removers are THE BEST GOSH DARN THING EVER! Applying the remover to your eyelashes like normal and letting it sit will also loosen up eyeliner in the waterline, so I use it even when I don't have mascara on. I've used Isehan/Kissme and Canmake - I prefer Isehan/Kissme's wand. I'd also recommend wiping the wand on the back of your hand or on a tissue before putting it back in the bottle after use to prevent too much gunk collecting in the bottle. 10/10 rec
RIGHT!? And the funny thing is that I’ve tried more expensive western versions (too faced had one a while ago), but go figure, J-Beauty does it better!
I usually avoid Myristic Acid in cleansers because they are so stripping, especially if this ingredient is at the top. I'm more on the oily side, but I still don't like this ingredient
The facial and body cleansers from Curel have been my holy grail for years. Absolutely loving the tinted sunscreens from Allie, specifically sheer ecru. Melano CC is just god like with how long it can be kept without oxidising.
Your review is really helpful, I used a few Biore and Skin Aqua sunscreens but eventually I choose K-beauty, they are more creative and innovative with skincare formulations, I could find items that fit my routine more. As always, I really appreciate your insights. Hope you have a great NYE.
Happy New Year, Ms Alice. Diana here! Diana is a red flag for me personally! You had chosen a perfect name indeed! haha I am speaking from my POV. J beauty was very famous from 80s to 90s in Singapore. Then, Yen was strong and their products were costly and not as affordable. The top 3 brands were Kanebo, Kose and Shisedo. I had been using Kose for 2 over decades. Like you mentioned, one big problem with J products is the lack of English translation. In Y2K, Korean dramas began gaining massive popularity. This was when K beauty products started to flourish, credit to the K celebrities. To support my idol then, I purchased Faceshop 2 way cakes and cleansers. K products are comparatively cheaper than J products, and therefore, I made a switch. I am still using them. I started trying Isntree last year based on Cassandra's, Dr Dray's and your recommendations. I love them! They are affordable and good quality.
Ah you chose such a good brand! Isntree remains a favorite for me for good reason haha! I do wish there was a bit more accessibility with J-Beauty sunscreen in particular these days. It really fills a need that I think SO many people have (weightless, body sunscreens, water resistant, etc!)
Are you interested in trying the vitamin C from kindofstephen? I saw he came out with a skincare brand (Poems from the lab) and it looks like the packaging is the same as the Melano CC! But with a 15% concentration instead of 5%. Very interesting - but I know this might be too high for you!
I just started SK 11 yesterday. 😊 I have on order tje Sana Co q 10 soy milk wrinkle cream. Mira suggested it in lieu of an estrogen replacement. Cezanne High Moist skin conditioner is one I've used for 4 years. Getting harder to find. 😢
What type of mascara did you use for the remover you are recommending? Tubing? I realize I’m just supposed to use a bunch of water to remove my tubing mascara but I think it makes a splashy mess.
I'd love a video focusing on Korean manufacturers and which brands produce with which, so to be better able to judge what products will probably have a similar formulation.
! I’ve been thinking about doing this. Glad to hear there’s interest! I’m especially curious about all the very, very similar cleansers I’ve noticed across brands 🧐
“Melt cosmetics called me a drama queen” say what…back up sista and give us that story! Lol I am loving everyone comments w suggestions. Thanks to all for sharing. ❤❤❤
Melt released a “bad side zodiac” collection, and the Fire palette has a shade called Drama Queen. And I won’t let it go, which is really me reinforcing the truth here 🤣😂
Thank you for all the research. I haven’t favoured JBeauty for years. I do like a lot of NARS and Shiseido products but they are luxury priced. I appreciate the information on more affordable brands. Happy New Year.
Hi Alice :) If you liked soy isoflavones on your skin you might like the Sana Nameraka Honpo Emulsion. Texture-wise I think it’s similar to the Naturie Skin Conditioning Milk in this video, but much lighter so for people with oily skin (like me) it’s enjoyable to use too. It’s unfragranced, and I don’t think it has any diana either haha. Love your videos! Happy new year!
I love the Melano CC haven't had it in my rotation in quite a while. I need that Lion Pair😮 Skin Aqua always seems to5 be a win!! I've had that experience with a sheet mask before😅 it's bit anxiety inducing to say the least!
Happy New Year!! I've seen several derms talk about/recommend the Skin Aqua sunscreens. I've seen one derm recommend the Melano CC vitamin c lotion (which is an essence). But I think it has Diana in it.
One of the big issues with j beauty or skincare is the lack of translation. I would love more reviews like this, but it might be necessary to find a freelance consultant to translate the descriptions and ingredients accurately to do them with ease.
I have somewhat sensitive skin with rosacea and acne. But I have incredibly sensitive eyes. Lots of fave and standout sunscreens, even for sensitive skin, BURN my eyes. The Skin Aqua does not - it is high and reliable SPF, is light and comfy to wear, and never stings my eyes.. It really is my favorite sunscreen. And is affordable, unlike a lot of Korean sunscreens. I think I have tried at least 10. Cerave - BIG no. Scinic - Nope. Skin 1004 and Canmake Mermaid - useable but still sting. Cetaphil is very expensive in Alaska, but usually not even available. Waterbabies - not irritating but thick; favorite for body. Olay SPF 15 - keep as a backup since the SPF 15 is low, but it works and does not burn my eyes, is cheap, I can reliably buy it locally, and something is better than nothing.
Thank you for sharing this as I don’t have particularly sensitive eyes. You know, this makes me wonder something: maybe it’s the speed of absorption playing a factor? The skin aqua absorbs SO quickly, whereas a lot of K-Beauty sunscreens sit on the skin a bit longer. Perhaps that gives more time for the filters to migrate into the eyes? Not entirely sure but your comment sparked some Alice Theory over here 🤣
@@AliceintheRabbitHole Thanks! We all need theories in our daily living! I am not sure if it only the alcohol? Mainly because, with many sunscreens, my eyes may sting or burn later, after hard coughing, sweating, etc. I have not had that issue with the Skin Aqua. I very much appreciate your thoughts and comments.
Mine is an unpopular opinion, I think! But it’s still the I dew care here’s the tea tree, specifically because it calms any breakouts I’m dealing with. ☺️
I just love you alice. Thoroughly enjoyed this video. I have my tea as i watch your videos with some lemon cake and i love every second of it. Thank you ❤ and Happyyy new year 🎊
My HG sunscreen is Japanese and has Diana in it, it doesn’t dry out my skin. I have never figured it out. I have VERY dry skin but the Japanese sunscreens don’t bother me at all.
@@AliceintheRabbitHole Biore UV Aqua Rich Moisturizing Sunscreen. I’ve been using it since at least 2014. I try other sunscreens but I always come back to it eventually. I’m religious about sunscreen so even with trying other things I go through at least 3 tubes per year. The fact that this feels like nothing is what originally sold me. I don’t know what sorcery they have going on so that this isn’t problematic with the amount of “Diana” in it.
Hi Alice, I agree with you on the Hatumugi toner and the waterproof sunscreen from Biore. I am able to try out the eye makeup remover since I tend to rub hard on my eye area. Melano cc serum is my vitamin C serum 😊 and the Lion Pair acne treatment is something I already wait to clear my acne treatment before using it. Any cleanser with acne treatment is too drying on my skin too. Sadly, Sana moisturizer is also my fail treatment since I also get breakout on my skin. 😭 Not sure if it is denatured alcohol as ingredient or anything else, b 19:20 ut I finally threw it away...
Oh wow, you know I read so many good reviews on that Sana that I really felt like I must be alone! But maybe it really is the ol’ acne curve ball. I feel it does make things complicated! Oh and I did pass it to Ara and she’s enjoying it, go figure LOL (she does not have acne; I’m so jealous 🤣)
Yup, this is coming from me as well having the dry acne prone skin type that cannot use oily skin acne treatment without giving in to dryness and peeling. Your partner has a skin type that I too envy... 😭
I use it over breakouts. I don’t think it’s intended to prevent, but it’s a great anti-inflammatory product (and complements other treatments well as it’s not “active” so to speak!)
Yes! So unfortunately, it’s not for me, but maybe my explanation of why my help: I use too many actives to fit it in! I absolutely feel it increasing the absorption of products, which is great with humectants - but not good with exfoliants/retinoids (and I need those for fighting my acne). I also already use microneedling (in the qure system) so I think the reedle shot was overkill for my skin Basically, I think it could be great for those with a simple, non-active routine (or mostly non-active) who want to get more from their products. But I also don’t think it’s the only option, as there are also devices that help with this (medicube booster H), “skin flooding”, absorption boosters, and of course microneedling Hope that helps!
@@AliceintheRabbitHole I’m working on getting my skin barrier super strong so I can handle my retinoids. This should help my toners and fermented serums absorb better. Thanks you for the helpful review!!
The Lion Pair acne cream is so good! I really only get hormonal acne for maybe a week out of the month now, this does such a nice job keeping it from turning in to a full blown breakout. The Curel water essence is another one of my favorites for calming.
See that’s exactly what I was noticing! I went a bit ham with it for about a week and WOW did it ever help…only catch being that I feel I used up a lot of that tube in a week. Still, very worth it. Very, very worth it!!!
Hi 🐇!!! ❤. I have type 1 rosacea, normal to dry skin and acne prone. I can't use retinol, urea, ha, niacinamide, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, mandelic acid, or fragrance. Is there any ingredients out there for VERY sensitive skin that helps acne? I think I have a tall order. 😅🤭
Try a very low % an slowly increase how many times a week you use it. I also find I need to put azaeliac on top of a water based serum and use a rich moisturiser on top. Without my skin finds too much and reacts.
@@gemmaferris4619 This is a good tip! I'm considering getting azelaic acid from a dermatologist as soon as I can get in. I gotta make an appointment on Monday. ❤️
@@AliceintheRabbitHole i have tried the purpleish blue PUMP bottle ones... *water gel it is almost like Biore sunscreen. they have several series, Super Water *light blue, Deep Protect & Care series *Dark blue Sun Protect *purpleish color
I used j beauty 20 years ago when I lived there. It was today’s K beauty. It was my gateway to skincare love. I always shopped in store back then and didn’t have allergies so any language barriers weren’t significant. Japan doesn’t package goods for international shipping so no translation. Hado Labo was in every house’s cabinets!
Yep I think it’s that - i get the feeling they haven’t felt the need to expand to an international market. I’m sure it does come with its own difficulties (ie returns, shipping, etc!)
I think whitening label on asian skincare means just like this - whitening, not brightening. Even if none of the ingredients can really whiten the skin, it's a marketing trick as in Asia paler skin is more preferred and that's a fact.
