In this video I will be trying to make a tri corner bowl Sometimes called a 3 corner bowl.
Always wanted to make on and found it it was fun. A little slow going but fun. Takes careful and accurate cuts.
Made from a nice piece of Cherry sent to me by Ron from Creations by Ron

I have done two so far. The second one was made from pine that was blown down during a tornado that hit Beauregard community in 2019, where President Trump came and looked at the damage. Tragically 23 people lost their lives. I donated the bowl to the Beauregard Volunteer Fire and Rescue dept. Where it is on display in honor of the people lost.

Another nice one, Gary. I've been trying to think of what I should do with that small pile of 4x4 lumber I've got left over from a porch railing job. Now, I know. I'll have to give one of those 3-corner bowls a try. Trouble is, it's clear, straight-grained wood; I don't know how to work with that! Haha! Ah, a 3-corner burl bowl? I'll let you know how THAT turns out... Take care, --Paul

Hi 👋, Gary, In some respects woodturning is a new adventure for me as I used to be or am a Specialist joiner come cabinet maker now retired for the past five years, At 70 years young I am still learning, Especially watching tutorials like yourself creating pieces of art. Each day is a adventure watching and learning and listening and then go and have a play to see what I can make. I have two wood lathes, one is a 1949/50 Wadkin RS 8 , with a inverter drive, and Kontour 1500A . Also with inverter drive , I purchased these back in the late nineties to make components for church organs and I had a contract to make thousands of pepper mills salt mills , These were semi automatic set ups. Now using turning chisels, Just feel as if I’ve gone back in time, The experience is great. Keep up the good work and look forward to the next territorial. Phil from the moulin France.

Nice three winged bowl. Some times they can be a challenge to turn depending on the wood used. The biggest concern about turning this type of bowl is keeping your fingers. Last one I turned was from plywood from the big box store. It can be a big challenge keeping the wood from tearing out by the three corners. Best to use pine or Baltic birch plywood. Don’t use oak plywood. I won’t tell you how I know, but it was a disaster.

Hi Gary, I watched your video and Phil Anderson’s and decided I’d like to make one. I wasn’t sure I could hold the work in the lathe as you did and I was correct. So I removed the corners so I had flat surfaces for the drive and live centres. It worked out well and I now have a tri-corner bowl about 115mm corner to corner and 70mm high. I started with a piece of mahogany 93x93x94mm.

@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Thanks Don! Well it does take very careful cuts when doing the rim. Other than that the rest is not all that hard. I know after this one I needed to turn a simple shape. But wood ended up being some of the nicest looking I have turned. You will see it in a few weeks. Thanks for watching, Gary
@BobBlarneystone

That seems like a lot of wood to waste. I wonder if a bandsaw jig could be made to cut the cube in half through the tree corners. Then you would have blanks for two, three-corned bowls, and they would be easier to mount on a screw chuck.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Not a bad idea at all. I was thinking about cutting some of it away but had not thought about the 2 for one. I have a glue up in mind for one of these and for sure that is a good idea for that for sure. Thanks for watching and the idea, Gary
@johnmyers8895
@johnmyers8895 Год назад
Maybe an easier method might be use a parting tool down the middle of the cube in the axis that Gary has it mounted. At least to get the cut started, then finish off on a bandsaw?

Always fascinating to how a three-cornered piece can originate from a cube. Ask anyone on the street and they will say 'square'! Great finish Gary! 😎

Gary. I tried my first 3 sided bowl this weekend. Very nervous due to cutting so much air. I finished the bottom tonight. I’m going to attempt to make it a lidded box I think. Definitely not a speed demon on this project.

Well they are slow going compared to a round bowl. Sounds like your doing fine.

As always an amazing piece, Gary. I need to get a similar live centre so that i can use it how you used yours. Always something new to get. lol. Lovely finish as always. Thanks for taking the time to share.

Thank you Bruce! The live center came with my lathe. It is just a matter of taking the point out. This piece of Cherry sanded nicely and really took a nice finish. Thanks for watching and take care, Gary

Great bowl. I tried an old piece of cedar post for my first attempt at one of these. Big mistake, extremely dry and brittle so chunks easily chipped off, and a lot was my inexperience too. I’ll try again someday. At least now I know it is not a “ right of passage” to craftsman turners.
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Thank you Lee. For sure a dry Cedar fence post would be very difficult. This is just a novelty turning and fun to do but not all that relaxing. I am sure when you try it again you will have success.

That was a very good result, Gary. Never know it was your first attempt. I've wanted to try one of these but haven't had the right piece of wood for it. That and my embellishing has been a bit too extensive, lately. I need a few straightforward projects and that amount of hand sanding doesn't look appealing, at the moment. Glad polishing pastes are so effective by hand. I suppose a person could get a buffing ball to buff the inside of the bowl and use a regular wheel for the outside when it comes to polishing. Yeah, that might save a little bit of elbow grease. Thanks for showing us your fine results and have a great week!

Thank you Jay. So the last square bowl I did was good practice for cutting these wings and getting the wall thickness the same on the edge. And natural edge bowls with long high wings is similar as well. So I looked at it as doing one of those. Thanks for watching and when you feel up to it give it a try. Take care, Gary

That is really wonderful Gary! A real nice piece of art. You make it look so simple, that maybe I could even do it. I will put this on the long (and growing) list of different projects that I want to try. Thanks for the great lesson, the encouragement, and a great piece of work! See you next week.

Lovely piece! Great technique and exploration/testing of how you tackle the next area youre working on. I've always wanted to try one myself but it looks like a butt clenching experience!
@ThePapa1947
@ThePapa1947 2 года назад
Thank you Ollie! The only clenching moments were worrying about cutting those corners away or chipping them out. It was like doing a natural edge turning with 4 very delicate places. Thanks for watching. Gary

Excellent! Haven’t turned a bias cut bowl in a long time. Really caused the grain to go in crazy directions. You did great with it. 1 place in particular was the curves between the points. Fantastic job of getting those areas the same thickness. Such a good example. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Doug. Two things on this I found to be a challenge. Keeping the tips and making the edge the same width. I have done a number of multi axis turnings where they needed to be that way so it was not too bad. Just very careful cuts as it can get messed up very easily. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very nice Gary! My first attempt at one of these is still sitting unfinished on a shelf. I think I had reached a point where I couldn’t continue, but I saw something in your video that might get it back on the lathe! I had to laugh early on in the video I’m wearing basically the same cargo shorts that you had on. A beautiful bowl for sure. Cheers, Rick

Nice little bowl, Gary! The cherry has some pretty grain, and I’m impressed by how even and symmetrical it all ended up. And as usual, a nice, smooth finish. I’ve seen several of these made, and I still have a hard time seeing the triangle from the cube when you first start out. lol Great job!
