@@markhoward9355 having seen most of his content already, it seems like the focus is on tactics and strategy. Still great stuff to take in. I guess I'm interested in listening to an experienced cat 1 racer's take on the "unwritten" rules of the peleton. What's proper and considerate? What are the obvious and not-so-obvious dick moves? Etc.. hope that makes sense. Tactics and strategy seem like a different subject, to me.

Body position is infinitely more important for pedaling through a corner than crank length or ANYTHING else. So many good riders clip their pedal because they're leaning their bike like a moto-cross rider instead of leaning (very slightly) their body keeping the bike more upright. I've attended and taught classes in this field (both Superbike and bicycle) and many good riders have it wrong. Nose over the inside brake lever (turning left, put your nose over the left brake lever), eyes level to the horizon and you can pedal through the turns in this particular crit with 180 crank arms. 165's is going against physics. Sure, it'll keep your pedal further from the ground, but at what cost? A simple adjustment in your position on the seat, and you can keep the 172.5's. If you can point me to the law of physics that supports a smaller lever, I'd like to see it. The rider at 4:23 exhibits an absolutely perfect position over his bike. And the rider 2 behind him (3rd position, green/black kit) is an absolute disaster. Not saying the rider in 3rd is a bad rider. But he could be much better after a weekend at Laguna Seca or Barber MotorSports Park SuperBike School.

Crank length affects power output.
@gmen1305
@gmen1305 Год назад
Not as. much as you might think - you lose a little getting up to speed but if you spin faster, it evens out
@jameshegeman5660
@jameshegeman5660 Год назад
To second gmen1305 -- At least one study has shown the peak power output remains pretty constant over a wide range of crank lengths. If you think about the physical theory of this -- Because bicycle gears can be adjusted, power output is ultimately controlled by the peak combination of muscle contractile velocity + force. These factors are independent of crank length. Crank length probably more affects secondary variables such as muscle contraction frequency and perfusion (vascular pump efficiency). These play more of a role in endurance factors.

i really can't see how you have been significantly impeded by the crash. You feathered the brakes and your speed dropped to 24mph, being mid-pack. I know it was a split-second decision, but imo staying in the race would have been the more efficient choice. Anyhow, great video as always!
@NorCalCycling
@NorCalCycling Год назад
I agree
@jameshegeman5660
@jameshegeman5660 Год назад
I love the topic of crank length!! If we assume compensatory adjustments to gearing, then IMO the general theory on this is that peak power potential is roughly the same (within a reasonable window of crank lengths), due to it being mostly dependent on the peak combination of muscle contractile velocity + force (which is purely physiological and has nothing to do with the choice of cranks). Longer cranks have the advantage of promoting a larger working range for the muscles and slower contraction frequency, and thus greater perfusion (blood flow & O2 delivery). Shorter cranks have the advantage of allowing for a more aerodynamic position. Therefore, when it comes to pure speed, which is a combination of peak power output and aerodynamics, shorter cranks are preferred (within reason). When it comes to endurance (and especially climbing), longer cranks might be better. The other possible benefit of shorter cranks (for some) is hip and knee comfort, since shorter cranks can help avoid extremely acute angles at either joint. For instance, if you have any issues with hip discomfort at the top of the pedal stroke, shorter cranks are definitely worth experimenting with.
@jameshegeman5660
@jameshegeman5660 Год назад
As an additional note -- I think some people tend to get confused by the relationship between torque/cadence and short-vs-long cranks. By this I mean that there is a tendency to associate longer cranks with "higher torque" and shorter cranks with "higher cadence". Both of these associations are trivially correct when considering the torque and angular velocity at the bottom bracket -- but that is irrelevant to the question of performance, because bicycles have gears... and regardless of the crank length, a gear ratio can be chosen to favor either torque or cadence, as preferred by the rider. The ultimate factor that controls the balance between the rider's preferred combination of pedal force and pedal velocity is the force/velocity profile of the rider's muscles -- not the crank length.

My inseam is about 28, and I bounce back and forth between 140mm (China and custom sources) and 150mm cranks (rotor) -- it really helps my position and less knee and Achilles/foot issues and, therefore, my longevity. I'm 51 and still riding, not for performance. The watt curve changes; short cranks are probably not a sprinter's 1st choice, but, in the end, you can spin faster and longer.

He knows darn well who that rider and team was, but chose not to mention either by name. Not because he dislikes them, but because he doesn't want to give an inch to his opposing teams not in a race or outside it, which is fine that's his choice. They aren't reciprocating the free publicity you provide to thousands of fans and it's not accidental. Your team is really strong, has been for well over 10 years.
