I don't get how Asus can make a detachable numpad this bad tho. Microsoft already had the perfect solution in 2008 with the Sidewinder X6 and a numpad attachable to both sides using magnets. Not sure why no one builds a modern mechanical keyboard version of that.

The long control I would say is actually a really good feature for the intended user of these. Many FPS players angle their keyboard with the right side closer to them for better positioning of their left arm while their face is close to the display, and for more mouse room, which naturally shifts their pinkie closer to the space bar. Hitting alt with the left thumb is also a common control in games and this moves that closer to the thumbs resting position. With that layout change, both are in more usable positions for both a straight and angled arm for playing games. The fact that we even use keyboards for gaming now is completely and totally arbitrary, and if we were designing something today, the CTRL key would not have been short like that... Games need extra commands pressed/held with similar frequency as SHIFT, so it would have been designed to be long like that... it even makes it in-reach for ESDF users.

Use English C instead of Shift, makes crouch switching to slow walking much easier. With Shift you have to awkwardly glide to reach Cntrl key. Ex Global Elite in CS tip.

@@IrrationalDelusion Yeah I personally have always used C for crouch toggle. I forget which game taught me it originally, maybe Borderlands 1? Imo the problem is the price, if you're going to make a keyboard that is made for people who don't need more fancy features, why price it higher than most of the keyboards who have all those features. So, I have a hate/love relationship with gaming keyboards. Considering "the hobby", they are actually on the cheaper side and widely available, especially if you live in Europe, where choices for ordering KB stuff are somehow more limited. On the hate side, their main selling point seems to be that they have RGB and some macros, pretty much features I personally don't use :D. Then they are made quite cheaply considering the price point as you pointed out with it being plastic and stuff being mostly non-replaceable. PS: I like to hit left control the fleshy edge of my hand opposite my thumb (we tried to find the proper name for that a while ago, but couldn't find anything non-completely-medical), less contortions of the pinky finger and feels more ergonomic to me.
@spellfox_
@spellfox_ Год назад
Hitting control like that sounds extremely awkward... I feel like I would hit at least 5 additional keys by accident if I tried that.
@simrock_
@simrock_ Год назад
@@spellfox_ I have short fingers, so that part of my hand hovers over the button most times, so the movement is essentially either just rotating my left wrist a bit and depressing the button on the outer edge or actually pushing it with the part where the pinky finger separates from the palm of my hand, depending on where my hand is currently hovering. Sorta hard to explain.
@HappyBeezerStudios
@HappyBeezerStudios Год назад
@@simrock_ Sounds like the equivalent of a claw grip, but for keyboards. I have big hands, but I just tried how that could work, and I can see the idea. But for me it makes it unnecessary hard to hit the bottom key row. But hey, if it works, it works. I'm also not into all that flashy RGB stuff, the only reason for me to get something with it would be to set it to a fixed color of my choice. Macros are nice to have, not just for games but also for content creation or office work. I tend to keep ctrl + w on my mouse (closes the current browser tab) Basically all the "gamer" stuff is nice to have, but not for what they advertise it as.

I still to this day struggle to find anyone who uses CTRL for anything other than very specific scenario actions. Everyone I know as always used C ever since it was the standard crouch key in old games. F for use key since GTA, Q and E for leaning and Alt for prone. I myself always found CTRL very bad to use, because often times while playing FPS games you are already holding Shift or hitting it frequently
@jessebensen3569
@jessebensen3569 Год назад
@@matheusbee3441 It depends on the game for me. If a game doesn't allow you to sprint while crouching, I prefer to use ctrl as it allows me to maintain full wasd movement without sacrificing anything. @romanbabynyuk946
@romanbabynyuk946 Год назад
@@JosephReference yes, latency is different from polling. Polling is how often the keyboard can send a signal to the PC. Latency is the time between the key's actuation and the signal actually being ready to send. Most gaming keyboards are either wired, or use 2.4Ghz wireless with implementations like Logitech's Lightspeed/Corsair Quantum/etc, which tend to have the same/lower latency as wired. WIreless non-gaming keyboards tend to use Bluetooth instead for compatibility, which is fine for everyday typing, but 100ms can be very off-putting and feel unresponsive while gaming.

The average gamer is never going to remove their key-caps for anything other than cleaning. If a key-cap is damaged, they will order a replacement from Asus. With that in mind, it makes sense that they would use a switch key-cap connection to provide better stability while sacrificing customization. Pretty much all wireless gaming keyboards are going to use a plastic bottom as it improves the connection by a significant margin. Yes, it is also cheaper to manufacture, but it provides a genuine benefit to the consumer. I feel like Asus kind of fucked up by sending a gaming keyboard to an enthusiast for a sponsored review. Gamers tend to care about aesthetics, the feel of the key-press, how comfortable the keyboard is during long sessions, features, and quality. The sound of the key board still matters, but it's not as high of a priority. Customization is so low on the list of priorities that some companies don't even bother advertising that they have hot-swappable switches (Ex: Razer Deathstalker v2). The wired keyboard not having a removable USB C cable was a very fair criticism.

@DarkPhoenixPear Год назад
It's matter when the keycap that comes with the keyboard get the scratched. The switch can't be removed (not hotswap). Overall, it's the normal gaming keyboard that if it's broken in some part (whether, the keycap or switch or the cable) you might need to just buy a new one... If it's cheap, I think it's fine to use gaming keyboard. However, the one in this clip is at the same price (or more expensive) than some other hotswap keyboards (or even some good group buy custom keyboard.)

Personally, I have a few custom boards and I do experiment with these big brand keyboards occasionally. I bought the ASUS Strix Scope RX Red switch (the exact first one shown here) and after lubing the switches, it probably has the BEST typing feel I have out of all of my keyboards. Im not too sure why the board shown looks different though. My keycaps are the satin types which show finger oils easily but my RGB on that board is easily brighter than all of my boards so i'm not sure why your board is so dim. But generally, that board is my favorite linear keyboard to type on hands down after lubing em. Without lube, the keycaps do sound hollow cos they are quite thin. But if you know how a good restored typewriter feels like, the RX actually reminds me of that. It really is CRISPY. But yes, it is annoying how the keycaps cannot be changed and I have to wipe my keyboard down every week.

Honestly, I think a pre-built gaming keyboard is the right choice for me. You can't really find custom keyboards with dedicated media keys which I really want since I use my pc hooked up with speakers as my music centre. I like RGB so I can choose one static colour since I find it hard to type on keyboards in the dark. I currently have a legion k500 which is my first mechanical but plan to switch to logitech g713 when it's on sale as it has everything I want including tkl and white. It sucks it's not hot-swappable but I don't really have any plans to swap switches anyway

My first gaming keyboard was a Razor something or another, and they soldered the switches down, and they were proprietary switches with a RGB led attached to it. The switches are nice clicky switches but you'd need a heat gun to remove the switches to repair or replace them, and you'd not be able to have the RGB effects if you did so, so I hucked it in the trash when one of the switches gave out on it.

I love the features of the claymore. Especially the removable numpad. But the keycaps are a problem and the number pad not being wireless is a problem as well . A numb pad is a must for me. This is pushing me to the 75% azoth.

i bought a evga z15 and stuffed it with foam, permatexed the stabs, and swapped the switches for akko cs purples. its good and i like it. the only thing is it has abs keycaps that are getting that greasy shiny look to them, so i might buy a new set of keycaps for it.

The StrixScopeRXTKL was the one I started my "gaming" with, but I am switching to the old Claymore for cost reduction and to have the keypad for macros. My biggest problem with the StrixScope is the secondary key never shows up in darkness, the keycap shades the light so if you forget where they are, it sucks.
