Gaming on Linux was a lot better than I was expecting. I have had zero failures, I've tried a good 10 games, they all perform well, G-Sync is very good, compared to Windows, Windows seems to get a few more FPS but it's nothing I would ever notice

@@garrettrinquest1605 Honestly I get better performance in Linux on some games too. I'm using KDE fedora 40. Tip: If you are trying to get a game to work on Linux, run Steam in terminal and the study the output. Sometimes they need a specific DX version to be passed to it. @@MKKomputing The Steam Deck has been a long time coming. It is actually the result of roughly a decade of work, starting with the original Steam Machines. Basically, Valve looked at the Microsoft Store introduced in Windows 8, and realized if they started to lock people into it, their entire business model was gonna fail. So they've been bullish on Linux for the past decade, with Gabe Newell even calling it the future of gaming, The Steam Controller laid the foundation for the controls on the sting deck, complete with having track pads and four back buttons as standard. There's a company that makes a software called CrossOver, and they have an open source version called Wine that they develop frequently. In 2018, Valve threw a bunch of money at it and created their own version of it called Proton, which is what allows Steam games to just work on Linux. They combined this with everything they learned about hardware manufacturing over the past decade and used it to create the steam deck.

Technically a .deb file on Debian (or some fork of it) is not the equivalent to an .exe file on Windows. It's more like compressed archive (like a .zip file) which is specifically intended to install software to your system via dpkg. So dpkg will extract this file and move its contents where they are needed that the software works properly. It also keeps information around what has been installed like this and where to remove it in case you want to uninstall the software. So best equivalent on Windows is probably a .msi file or some installer setup executable with just the difference that .deb files are not executables by themselves. Executables or binaries on Linux will most likely not have any extension at all because extensions are not required on Linux to specify what a file is used for (that's very different to Windows).

To further clarify on the "magic" I believe he was talking about proton-GE when saying this. That's an community port of proton by a dev name Glorious Eggroll. He's able to pull fixes from newer proton versions and also ship things that Valve can't with regular proton. His proton version is how I got Skyrim working initially because Valve couldn't include "faudio" due to licensing issues. But just because Valve couldn't doesn't mean someone couldn't take proton, bundle faudio with it, and release it independently. Which is exactly what Glorious Eggroll did.

Luckily back theni was World of Warcraft addict and that game worked without a hitch. Fast forward to current timeline.... Pretty much 99% of games work out of box and with very minor performance cost if at all. So many games to play that you cant possibly play them all. Don't get me wrong, VR gaming on linux does need _a lot more work_ and it's the one, singular reason I still dual boot windows since I tend to just drop anticheat games that don't work for other games in my wishlist that do nowadays, but the specific issue you're probably having is that PopOS uses a modified version of a desktop environment called GNOME, which does not have a thing necessary for VR called "DRM Leasing". If you wanna play VR, you'll need to use something like KDE Plasma, which you can download on PopOS but will clutter your applications menu and cause a few theming issues on Pop Desktop, so I'd make something called a Timeshift (Linux equivalent of Windows System Restore) before you install it and test it out. Still, this comes with issues of it's own. Last time I tried VR with my valve index, it was like 2 years ago, and it "worked" but the framepacing was terrible (because I was using X11 not Wayland, which hates multi monitor setups of differing refresh rates) and they didn't have Motion Smoothing, which is pretty mandatory for VRChat. Don't try wayland on pop desktop if you're using an Nvidia card by the way, it's straight up busted.
@MKKomputing

Gotcha! Thanks for the information! I’m still pretty new to trying to get VR on Linux working so this is actually very helpful. 😁 I wonder if the upcoming Cosmic desktop for Pop will fix the issue. 🤔
@WMan37

@@MKKomputing I'm hoping for that too. I _loved_ using the meta key on Pop Desktop, it was so incredibly useful and ludicrously snappy to navigate my system and find open windows with that button when I was still using PopOS. But like, I mainly stay on CachyOS KDE and Nobara Project KDE these days so the closest thing to that I can get is rofi/wofi which isn't as good of an out of the box experience as cosmic launcher on the meta key was IMO. Hopefully I can install Cosmic Desktop alongside KDE Plasma with no issues under the same /home directory when it's complete and out of alpha/beta.

Gaming on Linux went from being virtually a no-go except for a few indie games with native Linux ports, to hit or miss with a very strong chance of a hit (with maybe some bugs or unexpected behavior) with the introduction of Proton. It's still not perfect but it is far better than I would have ever imagined a decade or two ago. I play my PC games on my Steam deck docked to my TV, classic consoles on my Raspberry Pi, and generally don't play too many games on my laptop or desktop. I'm mostly a console gamer. Honestly, if I had the money, a separate PC running Windows dedicated to playing games, running proprietary two-way radio programming software and controller firmware updates would make the most sense, but it's not necessary. As little as I play games, it would probably never get any use--but it would provide the best compatibility with the least tweaking or other bullshit. Plus, I could keep my "real" work machine free of pointless games, while having a "toy" machine on Windows just for fun. Still, consoles have pretty much everything I need, and those few games that remain PC exclusive are playable on my Steam Deck, so a Windows PC is really not at all needed these days for gaming.

My experience with VR on linux has been mixed, I got the ALVR + Quest 2 + SteamVR setup working just fine, though it doesn't really work all that well on desktop environments other than KDE Plasma, so you might have to switch from GNOME to Plasma if you want to get VR up and running. Other than that, the majority of issues with VR that I've been experiencing are coming from proton not being able to handle properly OpenXR which is a fairly new universal VR library, so games that use it have a tendency to not pick up the headset even though SteamVR sees it just fine, though games that use OpenVR (which is the SteamVR specific library) work just fine, that's why for example the newest version of Beat Saber doesn't work, but te legacy version available in the beta tab does. I believe this is mostly an issue with the Unity version of OpenXR, so any newer VR game made with Unity probably won't work, though I haven't really tested if the same applies to OpenXR games made with Unreal (didn't really test it)

So... I have a Valve Index. When it was new, it worked well enough. I had some trouble with it not initialising properly just about every single time, but the ritual of closing SteamVR, unplugging and replugging the power, then starting SteamVR almost always fixed it. If not, doing it again did. Never had to do it more than twice. Another issue that popped up sometimes was the steam button not working. You could either ignore it and just play the games, not being able to close them from within VR, or you could do the ritual to fix it. The games themselves ran flawlessly. Then, maybe two years ago, it completely broke. Doesn't detect the headset, nothing. I haven't really tried it again since then, so it might well be fixed, but my point it, it can be a bit flakey, even with the Index. For what it's worth, some of the extra features have never worked. The cameras work as a webcam just fine, but SteamVR can't use them. The virtual desktop thing, where you can control your PC from within VR, has worked exactly once. So... it can work, I guess, it just decides not to.

Just a couple of small technical clarifications: Opting in to Steam beta gives you a preview of new Steam client features, with the downside being the chance that there may be some outstanding bugs that haven't been fixed. It will generally not have any effect on Linux compatibility of games. That's pretty much entirely about the Proton version. So it's using Proton Experimental that will give you a preview of compatibility features. Of course, you're generally best off changing the version of Proton just for games that you have issues with and leaving it at the default otherwise. In Debian, .deb files are the equivalent of .msi files in Windows since these are both package formats. Most of the time executable files in Linux don't have any extension, unlike in Windows where they generally end in .exe. They could end in .bin in Linux.

@@MKKomputing Debian, while extremely stable, relies on a massive collection of _deprecated_ repositories. "If it works, don't fix" pertains to Debian in full, and why most _servers_ are Debian. But for modern desktop usage, especially in gaming where we rely on having the latest hardware, drivers, and newest features, we need LTS or "Bleeding Edge." This is where Fedora and Arch really come in, especially with the latest flatpaks. This is the primary reason SteamOS went from Debian (2014-2019) to Arch (2020-current). Debian can still get parity to Fedora/Arch, but this requires the user to manually build the packages for their distro, whereas these packages are already native in flathub or the AUR for Fedora/Arch. TL:DR - Debian = Stability and Reliability for Servers and _legacy_ desktop components. Fedora/Arch = (LTS/Edge) Latest and newest hardware component support, drivers, packages, and features; especially for gaming.

VR in Linux is a hit and miss, in my opinion. I had some luck after trying it for few days. It all boils down to the combination of graphic card, HMD and Distro. In my case, I had good success with Quest 3, NVidia 30XX (driver 515 and up) and Ubuntu or Nobara as my Distro of choice. My tip is: to use ALVR (to stream the image) and to disable the "sound device" in the ALVR screen after the initial settings. That result, in my case, is 100% success in connecting my HMD to Steam VR. The only factor I need to make sure is the "Wi-Fi quality". So the order should be: 1. Make sure Steam is not working. 2. Start ALVR (I'm using the ALVR Launcher so I can test different versions) 3. In the ALVR "Settings", make sure that: "Game audio and Mic" are disabled". 4. In the ALVR "Installation", "register ALVR Driver" 5. Start Steam client (not SteamVR). 5.5 Modify "SteamVR Launch Options" property and add "~/.steam/steam/steamapps/common/SteamVR/bin/vrmonitor.sh %command%" (make sure the "vrmonitor" is located at that folder) 6. You can now start the ALVR application on your Quest or after you started SteamVR. 7. In the ALVR, "press the [Start SteamVR] " button. 7.5 Oh, and in the ALVR "devices" you need to "trust" the HMD device. 8. Put on a headphone or wireless earbuds for the sound (hopefully it will be stable in future builds... who knows). You should now see SteamVR in your HMD. Good Luck.

Turned out to be a good thing as well because I am very interested in Valorant but it got me rolling into cs again so it's been a blast! Minecraft does indeed work better for me on Linux than Windows, don't know about anyone else's experiences but it has been very fun. My initial reason for daily driving Linux was because Windows kept crashing, been on Linux for almost a month straight! I do not think I will need to go back to Windows.

Small correction 3:44 EAC and BE both have linux runtimes that wrap the wine process ( it's been this way for a few years now, and not that "EAC hates linux" ), developers however have a choice (like you said) when compiling the update for their game to allow the linux client for EAC or BE to connect. So if you see anyone saying "enable Linux, it's just a tick box in the settings," it's as simple as they say it is. Which is why I think a lot of games that have EAC or BE that have not yet enabled support for Linux shouldn't be supported by the community. Honestly a blessing for me because now I have an excuse to tell my friends that I don't want to play, it's that I literally can't play "X" game. Looking at you Fortnite and R6.

Gotcha! Thanks for the correction! Yeah, one of those “speak with your wallet” things. If companies and devs see that they’re losing players simply because they refuse to flick the Linux switch, eventually they’ll catch on and start supporting the OS better.

I would say that executable is "computerspeak" for binary, 1's and 0's, the result from compiling code. On Linux typically we don't use an extension in the filename for binary. In some cases programs look for extensions and it is being considered a good habit to use them (just for clarity's sake) but fundamentally on Linux extensions are not necessary and more a guideline than a rule. Headers in the files tell what kind of file it is and that is what software goes by. But GUI's do sometimes demand a certain extension because those only show files with that extension. That is a sloppy design-choice if there is no toggle to turn that off and show all the files.
@MKKomputing
@MKKomputing 3 месяца назад
Gotcha! Comparing .deb to .exe was a mistake on my part and I am working on correcting myself and making sure the information I spread is more accurate in the future! I'm also trying to explain these terms in a way that a wider audience can understand. It's much easier to explain ".exe = program" since that's where the majority of windows users run into the filetype, when it relates to a game or program.

7:06 Correction: package formats like .deb or .rpm aren't equivalent to EXE files. They are more like installer scripts, the windows equivalent would be MSI files. Actual Linux executables often don't have any extension at all, they are instead marked by a special bit in the file system, which you can see through the ls -l command, or by checking the file properties GUI. Exceptions to this rule would be .AppImage files, which are somewhat inspired by macOS app bundles. You only very rarely launch executables directly from their files in Linux, since any decent package will add a link to them in your application launcher.

Enjoying these videos of yours a lot. Subscribed. I switched to linux mint a bit more than 2 years ago, but I also dual booted. Full disclosure - I work as an IT supporter, so dealing with issues in linux made sense as a way to challenge my skills. My pc's cpu is over 10 years old at this point, but my graphics card is pretty beefy. One issue with windows for me was that it has a memory leak with my processor, so I would see bluescreens constantly, and lagging. So eventually I just uninstalled my drive with windows and used it as storage for linux. Switching to linux mint, these issues were completely gone, it was as if I had a whole new computer. My main issues gaming wise, has been a few games that really are unsupported and really hard to get to work with proton, but usually there's something like protontricks and other things you can do. It took me a couple of hours to figure out how to set up. Usually installing the requisite dependencies within proton or wine, or using an older version will get most games running, and then there's the very few games that don't run. In those cases, I've just waited untill valve updated proton and then seen the game suddenly work. Otherwise I try to avoid games that don't have enough linux support. I enjoy higher framerates in games, much faster boot times, much faster loading times, I can stream higher quality youtube videos, I can have more taps open. and on and on it goes. Currently I don't understand why anyone would even want to use windows. They are putting in so many ads and systems that go in the way of a good computer experience, and they bloat things to an enormous degree. If you use it professionally or in a business, I would still be preferring windows ofcourse. You oftentimes need to have access to specific programs that linux wont ever support. On the whole - I've been extremely happy with linux, and I don't ever plan on switching back to windows. I see way too many people who are very pro microsoft, even it professionals who should really know better. I think people just get used to doing one thing, and they lose the ability to make the switch because they are too bogged down in their usual way of doing things. So essentially, switching is going to hurt, but it will purify your computer of the rot of microsoft, and it will keep you away from impure gaming companies that don't want to support linux. It is much better for your soul in the long run.

I’m glad Linux has been working so well for you!! I completely agree. My system just seems to run all around so much better using Linux than even on a fresh install with Windows. I think a lot of people still use windows due to the familiarity and the compatibility. They don’t want to learn a new operating system because they’re used to the way windows works and Linux seems foreign. And the majority of Windows users aren’t tinkerers, and they don’t want to be. They don’t want to spend time getting a program or feature to work. They just want it to…ya know…work! 😂 Which I can understand, but for me, it’s part of the fun!

He says he only has so many hours off, and when he's home, he wants things to just work, just as you said. It's nice to see how far gaming on linux has come, of my library 222 games work with some needing minor tweaks. 3 outright do not work and I have yet to get the basic VR home experience to a satisfactory level of performance to begin testing the 23 games that are VR only or have VR capabilities. I'm actually going to test two types of hardware to check the levels of performance on different tiers of hardware, one is a lower end, but still VR capable PC using a radeon 6600 and an r3 4100, while the other is a decent system using an r5 3600 and a 4070. Side note for those that are skeptical of Nvidia on linux, I was getting consistently better performance on linux rather than windows while using the Nvidia card as my main driver. The most notable one is an indie game called Gunner Heat PC (GHPC) which will stutter in windows on levels like pushing tin part 2 because of how many and spread out the enemies are in those levels. On linux there was no stuttering and the only issue is a minor audio bug constantly present on the M1 and the M60 line of tanks' main cannon making it sound significantly crunchier than it should be.

Great video. I remember trying to make the switch at least 2 times then going into the forums, getting the RTFM treatment, then inevitably quitting because I don't have the time to diagnose problems constantly. Linux's primary problem tends to be technical purity gate keeping. With proton it kinda side steps a big part of the issue for the "one device to rule them all" mentality that people have. I.e. More computers = more setup and less time actually doing the thing that makes money, entertains, or provides value in some other way. Many of the old functions of apps have gone server side so I'm excited to see the rest of your month long switch. Keep up the good work in documenting your experience!

Generally the reason why Linux users tend to do that is a lot of people don’t know how to search for answers. They use the forums as Google search. If you are getting RTFM’ed are you SURE you were not asking a question they’d been answered hundreds of times? If not, are you sure you were asking the right questions and providing logs? These people are volunteers, not paid tech support. They are helping you out of the kindness of their own heart, but with that comes the responsibility of doing your own digging and proper question etiquette. I always start my questions with: “if someone could point me in the direction of the documentation to solve this problem I’d be very grateful, here is what I’ve done so far…” and providing the appropriate logs. This is after searching the forums, Google, asking chat GPT, etc. Yes, some Linux users will tell you to read the friendly manual even if your question is unique, has nothing to do with any existing documentation, and asked the question properly, but most don’t. Also: if you are new to Linux and wanting to dive into the deep end with arch or gentoo, or even LFS, expect veteran users to tell you to RTFM unless you are VERY certain what you are asking has not been asked before or has a well documented solution. These distributions are not intended to be user friendly, but are documented well enough that a brand new user could figure it out. But if that’s the route you want to go, learn to RTFM. It’s like when learning how to drive you decided you wanted your learning car to be a semi-truck.
@MKKomputing
@MKKomputing 3 месяца назад
@BitTheByte I can say for the questions I asked I tried my best to try and find the answer myself. I usually only ever ask a forum as a last resort, if I can’t find the answer ANYWHERE else. I completely understand your point about being annoyed with answering the same question over and over again. I remember when I worked at Geek Squad, the amount of times I had to tell people the difference between falling for a scammer and getting hacked was SOUL DRAINING. But I do have to ask: if someone is posing a question to a forum, and all they get back is RTFM with NO OTHER LEADS who does that help? Some people don’t even know how to FIND the manual to read it. Is there an argument to be made that maybe that person shouldn’t be using Linux? Sure, but all telling them to RTFM does is discourage them continuing to try. To use your analogy, if someone wants to learn to drive in a semi and you just tell them the equivalent of “Git Gud, loser,” all you’ve done is frustrate that person. Yeah, learning to drive in a semi isn’t a good idea, but that’s what that person has chosen and they’re asking for help. And the fact of the matter is: most people aren’t trying to “Learn to drive” with Linux. They’re switching from another OS, they’re already somewhat familiar with how a computer works, just not how Linux works. And if you have the time to read the problem and tell them to go RTFM I would argue you have the time to at least point them in the right direction. Linux will continue having problems gaining more users if the community gets annoyed answering the simple questions that get asked over and over again.

IMPORTANT. Install Timeshift and set it to make regular daily snapshots (default is 5 per day), that way if you mess up your system you can roll back to a previous snapshot and undo whatever it was that messed up the OS. Linux's support for rollback is way, way better than Window's. Especially if you use the btrfs file system which has native support for snapshots. Unlike with EXT4, btrfs snapshots are integrated into the file system itself (the file system keeps track of what was changed about the file data rather that just overwriting it) and automated snapshots are transparent to the user. If you use EXT4 you can still make snapshots but they use Rsync which basically just backs up any system files that have changed between the current snapshot and the previous one. By default snapshots exclude user files, only the OS files are included. They are not system backups just an undo button for OS changes.

the zoomed in payday issue ***sounds*** like an issue with scaling / HiDPI The correct fix as you've found however is to just use the proton version. Same as payday most native linux ports are semi-abandoned by their developer, because they don't have the patience to actually learn how to deploy for Linux and outsource the linux port to a separate company. with dxvk-native that should become much less of an issue in the future, if developers stop being idiots.

I don't think it is just as easy as flipping a switch and having the game support Linux, you then have to be ready to support Linux users. Is the error being reported by the Linux user because of the game, is it because of the translation layer, is it a fault in the distro the person is using, is it because the person is using an Nvidia GPU when the drivers for Linux are worse than AMD's offerings? I wonder if your VR issue would still exist if you were using an AMD GPU? Perhaps there's a video in that for the series? That's why I think so many game publishers/devs are unwilling to 'just flip the switch'. They don't want the extra work that supporting Linux would actually mean.
@MKKomputing
@MKKomputing 3 месяца назад
The “flip a switch” comment was more directed at Easy Anti Cheat. I know that for the actual game to run it either needs to be compiled for Linux or given support through a compatibility layer I’ve seen it reported that turning on Linux support in Easy Anti-Cheat is as easy as flipping a switch. But someone else told me in the comments that that’s not true. Still looking into it, but if it’s not true then I definitely need to correct myself in a future video which I definitely will do. Thanks for the information! As for VR, it probably would be better with an AMD Graphics card. I unfortunately just don’t have the money to drop on one right now. 😅 Maybe in the future!

I wanted to add some commentary in regards to Linux gaming. Triple A publishers have been called out by RU-vid channels such as upper echelon for incentivizing via matchmaking results, extra content purchases. I mean in the terms of matching you up with somebody of a higher skill level to hope that you will want to buy something in order to match that skill level or thice versa. The raw performance, as compared to windows, is beneficial to Linux machines. Although, kernel level anti-cheat productions have faltered any progress Linux may have by games influenced by Windows publishers or endorses.

This is really nitpicky, but I feel like pointing it out: You make it sound like .deb is the Debian equivalent of a .exe That is not quite true. deb files are packages, they contain files and instructions for how to install them. It is not executable itself, it's not a program. Actual executables on Linux don't necessarily have an extension. Instead, they are identified by their permissions. If the permission to execute it is given, it's an executable. Rarely you will find .run used for executables, though. And of course, "executable" extends a bit further than just ELF-files (the Linux equivalent of a Windows PE file, which is the .exe) - shell scripts (.sh) are also executable. Those do have, by convention, their respective extension, but it's not necessary. For scripts, the first line in the file tells the system how to execute it.

@MKKomputing
@MKKomputing Месяц назад
I actually did look into Kernel-Level Anti-Cheats more in the video I released after this. Since, I did get a few people saying that it wasn’t a good thing. I never really found anything on it affecting performance. I’ll have to look into that. Is there a report or documentation you can point me towards for that information? I’d really appreciate it. 😁 And you’re right! Anti-Cheat software running at the kernel level can be used to cause harm to a PC or to steal data. But when I looked into it I only found a case of a third party maliciously using a driver used in Genshin Impact’s anti cheat to inject malware into people’s PCs. I couldn’t find any cases of an Anti-Cheat software being developed to DIRECTLY harm a user’s computer. Steal data: probably, but I mean what do you do online nowadays that DOESN’T get your data tracked or stolen. 😂 Not saying that it’s not a shady thing for companies to do, or that anyone shouldn’t try to prevent their data from being compromised but people always seem to bring that up as if basically EVERY COMPANY isn’t doing it.
@TheLotw
@TheLotw Месяц назад
@@MKKomputing They are not going to straight out tell you as Rootkits are illegal and that is what basically the anticheat software is. Also with what happened with MS lately and all those PCs going down because of that virus program that most companies where using that did kernel level, they are locking the ability for that down, so anticheat is going to have to find another way.
@MKKomputing
@MKKomputing Месяц назад
Well, no. I don’t expect companies to outright say “Hey, are Anti-Cheat causes performance issues!” But there are plenty of people online who are usually able to test for stuff like that and post about their findings. But I don’t know how one would test performance with and without anti-cheat. Could be a lot harder than I’m expecting or impossible for all I know. 😅 Well, I mean really the only similarity between Rootkits and Kernel-level anti-cheat is that they both run on the kernel level. But one is made for malicious intent, and the other is made to try and prevent cheating. And that’s the point I’m trying to make. Kernel level anti-cheat, or ANYTHING running on the kernel level for that matter is for sure something to be cautious of, ike you brought up, just look at what happened with Crowdstrike, but just because something is running with those high-level permissions doesn’t mean that it’s inherently bad. Kernel level anti-cheat and security software developers and distributors don’t produce these softwares to intentionally cause harm to a user’s computer. And why would they? There are more computer-literate users now more than ever and SOMEONE is bound to find out, post their findings, and now that company is in hot water. The makers of Genshin Impact were under fire from happened with their kernel level Anti-cheat software, and that wasn’t even their fault! Just the result of some unaffiliated hacker making use of their software. Definitely scary that a program could have that much authority over someone’s computer, but again, it was never originally made for that purpose.

As the same for hardware like gpus if you already have a powerful one from like 6 yr ago. So they force the os to be more demandant with DX12 for example. That way the ppl is deceived by making thinking them that they need a new win os as new gpus because older win versions are slower , a thing that's not truth. And so the ppl is forced to consume more harware again like new gpus. And this is why some games today run better as a proved fact in dx11 that dx12. And the fullscreen issue you talk about is crystal clear another example. These evil companies are just enslaving you. Not in my case I almost quit gaming.

Yeah, I might buy replacement bases stations for my OG HTC Vive and try that out if I can’t get my Oculus working.

The only issue I have had in the past few years is MP games, so no more playing with 12 year olds thank god. just use non steam launcher, lutris or heroic.

When I tried ubisoft connect on lutris it doesn't work and same using bottles. Its either a black screen or the new ui that doesn't even work. I'm really confused that I got it to work on bottles and have the old ui somehow? I think i'm using an old version of proton ge, 8 something.

Huh…interesting. 🤔 I haven’t tried a Ubisoft connect game yet. I think I have the first Assassin’s Creed game on there. I’ll try it, see how far I get, and let you know if I do!

highly suggest for minecraft to use prism launcher, that is much easier to setup for minecraft and mods.
