It’s comments like these that make me so upset. People suck the passion from others and I hate they took this from you. Over the years of watching your videos I can tell you are very analytical and take these criticisms to heart. Nothing can change how your brain works (as much as I would love to). You are someone super special, not because of what your videos. Because you have a genuine heart for people and bringing joy. Who knows if you’ll ever read this. @@patrickt101 we all struggle from time to time, it’s hard to keep going but eventually continuing on will pay off and you will get better. Even I still have room to improve, I remember I could barely draw hands and even though it’s still hard I was able to draw them better than before.

I have been taking long breaks from RU-vid and haven’t watched this channel in ages and Mr. Fruit is the first channel that I genuinely loved from so long ago from back in d1 infection, grenade dodgeball and juggernaut or Overwatch 1 gun game and it’s so refreshing to come back. I love how far Christian has come but like he’s still the same guy. It might be the different new content and style. It’s like one of the most warm feelings I’ve ever had. Love this guy, man 😁

You asked! Apologies for the absolute essay, but man, do I get driven seeing art stuff, and as a professional, I'd love to lend my opinion to you. -Yes, the smaller sketchbook is probably not as good, but it is less daunting. I see a sort of "perfect or nothing" personality trait (seems familiar, so...lol), so a smaller sketchbook as a start is just fine, as is the case for copying from reference. I see you noticed limitations in the book's size already in the video! As a kid, I had a very similar sketchbook size, and I would copy Star Wars art, screenshots, and eventually I'd draw the action figures in my hands. It was...kind of my thing at the time. -Great to see you engaging in your first challenge for yourself; going for it with female forms. I too prefer drawing men with hard lines, easy anatomy, as I'm more familiar with a male body. The stuff you've got looks great, your self-critique notes are awesome to see you doing, and are honestly accurate (proportion notes, foreshortening, etc.). Amazing seeing you looking up tutorials on drawing with structure. You'll find structure will help you feel out the 3D form and put what is in your head onto the paper without the features getting jumbled. -I love to see your progress, pushing through things that must have made you some level of uncomfortable; drawing turning shapes, checking up on vids for the fundamentals, portraits, etc. -Your eye for color is nice, and if I may compare, better than mine, even via reference. I've got none to speak of, really. My eye is for shape, gesture, and motion, so now I'm a professional animator, haha. ____________ I recall the very first time I broke from drawing from reference. My sister (better artist than me at this time. I always wanted to be as good as her) said to me "you never draw faces, or hands, or from imagination." So essentially, taking it as a dare, I made a portrait from my head, with a hand up in front of the face, with a reflection in the visor. A simple kid-like drawing to be sure, LOTS of mistakes, and obvious lack of techniques that would have totally helped. But! It was my first foray into it, and I ended up getting best in show at the county fair. Feather in the hat for that. From there, I focused on hands and faces in my subjects, and I'm really happy I was pushed to do so. Great to have good people, even better people pushing you to be better. With a similarly "perfect or nothing" tendency, that trait tends to make me slow on change and improvement if I leave it up to myself sometimes. My pursuit of great strides in improvement and change need to be intentional, and work against my own comfort. ____________ 30 days of your journey reintroducing yourself to drawing has been spectacular to see! The progress is amazing, and....yes.... hyperfocus makes ADHD folks capable of intense progress in many things. Ask me how I know ;D. I used to have dreams, and insomnia, related to my mind racing over the next things I would draw. It has actually been a very long time since I've put pencil to paper for a sketch. Some things, from me to you, in regards to your progress in art: -Absolutely go for some full body art, no concentration on the faces. I see you love a portrait, which is great, and a focus in itself! I suggest however, try to draw a body, head to feet, specifically choose art with feet drawn on the ground. It can be tempting, and you may not know you're doing it, but it's EASIER to avoid addressing how a character stands on the ground. Even professional comic art, you'll notice from some artists (Examples in some X-Men and superhero comics), avoid drawing them down to the feet. They'll even cover them in low fog sometimes! -VERY IMPORTANT: Learn the drawing process. This will help you understand how a body is built, proportioned (Eyes go where on the face, a nose goes how far down before the mouth, the body of a tall person is such and such number of heads tall etc), and how it moves and where the bodyparts are going that lead you to a pose. That will help you inform yourself on anything that "looks weird" or "not what I see in this reference, but I don't know why." 1. Gesture: This is line of action; where the weight is going, where the attention, and where the force of your character is going. Are they standing with weight on one foot? Organically, the weight goes to one side more than the other, where is the compression? This process is fast, full of feeling, and not always anatomically accurate. Don't worry, you sort that out with the next step. NOTE: An important term to look into knowing and looking for in art is "contrapposto." Thank me later! 2. Structure: On top of your gesture lines, you build out your generic shapes to build form and volume. Reign in the gesture so you're not "off model." Head, ribcage, hips, shoulders, the volume of the thighs (ayo), legs, down to the feet etc. This is where it's important to draw to the feet, because the gesture and how you reign it in can tell you if your character is off balance. 3. Anatomy: You can put the general shapes of the character on the structure, which will build out their silhouette. Basic musculature, like the pecs, lats, how the core connects the ribcage to the pelvis, how the (anatomical name incoming, but it's my favorite muscle. It's in the neck) sternocleidomastoid informs the direction of the head, and how it connects the head to the chest/shoulders. 4. Details: The character's specific features, facial expression, clothes, armor, shading etc. When I learned this process, my art skill "under the hood" really exploded, as behind the artwork, I UNDERSTOOD what was happening, even with a copied picture. Being informed on what the body is doing will really help elevate you beyond relying on your eye to see if the art you've made looks like the art you're copying. And your eye is very good! -Lastly, I suggest you head towards drawing from imagination, and also attempt to break from anime stylization sometimes. I know it's scary! But if you look at yourself in a critiquing way, you may be learning yourself into a box if you stick with only anime and stylization. Being informed of realism can absolutely help you double your art back into anime (we all love anime), and know your forms even better. Same with copying art. You can start by drawing from life. Go out, do a few quick organic gestures of people walking by, then hold an image of them in your head (because they'll be gone) and try to capture the essence of what you saw with some structure. Just be ready to suck for a bit, haha. I know, this can be intensely daunting. I hate sucking at stuff, especially stuff I've come to think I'm good at. But it's good for learning, exponentially so. I'll stop the essay here. It's been a great watch, man. And good to see you exploring things that make you happy. Keep at it, you do still have a gift. I'll leave you with a quote my old teacher said to me, and I say it to everyone who tries to tell me this: "When people say to me, 'I can't draw,' I hear, 'I don't draw.'"

@@MRLuckyE85 That quote at the end is exactly me in a nutshell when it comes to artwork. I can’t draw because I simply don’t. (Yes, I read everything else. You clearly have attention to detail and convey a lot of nuance in how to improve.) It’s that simple. I even took an art class in high school and never officially looked at the grade I got for my final project. To this day, IDK what I got and I’ll never know, but that’s simply because I didn’t care one damn bit even though I did my best. I just threw it out because I was done with the class despite liking it to a degree and finding the tips useful at the time. (Art isn’t my college major nor a passion, but I do appreciate it regardless.) I knew I finished the class with a B+ or A- or so, but that’s it. Anyway, the point is I can totally see what your teacher meant.

As a big sketcher through highschool, I got what I considered “pretty good,” and was even voted best artist in my year, tied with a Japanese girl whose talent I admired and honestly was worried I wasn’t competitive with. However, the affirmation sometimes can limit, and coming out of there voted “best artist” wasn’t great for my first semesters in art college, kind of cruising through like I was still in highschool. I remember one of my teachers in drawing for character animation asking me to stay after class to have a talk. He said to me I have talent, he can see I’m good. But if I don’t show I’m putting in effort, he will fail me. I’d never had that talk before, especially in the field of art. I credit this person as the one who got me serious, and changed how I approach learning. By the end of my time in college, he said to me I am one of his students who has improved the most. He is, and always has been, one of my few most cherished and favorite teachers.

He opens the video with “I wanted to get back into drawing” he does not say he is a complete beginner. Your skepticism is misplaced and mean spirited, do not put down artists or new comers when they want to try something. Your discouragement is upsetting, artists need to support other artists/aspiring artists. Please reflect on how you engage with our shared art community.

the dude has been drawing since he was a child. He also has gartic phone videos. Also, some ppl can naturally be talented. They have the "eye". I do better w ballpoint pens bc it puts me in a mindset where I know I have to take bold strokes, not constantly rely on erasing. And it makes me just go all out without anxiety. Ppl are different Also CLEARLY the dude eyeballed drawings and copied them. That's not even immoral if he's doing it for practice and trying to improve

Even with a reference, it seems highly unlikely that a beginner could produce such high-quality ballpoint pen drawings in just 30 days. Firstly, even if he has been drawing since childhood, mastering the technical difficulty of ballpoint pen drawing in just 30 days is very challenging. Ballpoint pen drawing requires extreme precision in each stroke, and mistakes cannot be corrected. Even naturally talented individuals need extensive practice to become proficient with this tool. Secondly, the detailed handling and shading effects require a deep understanding of light, shadow, and structure, which takes time to develop. Even those with a natural "eye" need time to accumulate this experience. Lastly, in the video, he is not happy with some of his artwork but cannot pinpoint why. This indicates a lack of deep understanding of art. If he truly reached this level in 30 days, he should be able to identify and improve on his issues clearly. In conclusion, even with a reference, such work is highly improbable to achieve in a short period.

@@toaster710 Thank you for your feedback. I don't intend to discourage newcomers or artists but rather to express some objective facts. Copying others' artwork is also a skill, but there are significant inconsistencies in this artist's work. Firstly, there's a noticeable quality difference between his copied pieces and his original creations. If he is more skilled in copying, his works should be more consistent. However, his drawings don't seem like the level someone with previous drawing experience would achieve upon restarting or pushing themselves hard. This makes me uneasy, as some of his work in the video is clearly fake. I'm disappointed that you call yourself an artist and didn't realize he is a fake. Supporting and encouraging new artists is very important, and I hope he continues to improve through practice. However, we also need to provide objective evaluations of artwork to avoid being misled by false information.

Do you know Mr. Fruit? He has always had that drive in him to excel. He has always been his own harshest critic. His ambition and attention to detail naturally yields results of this level of excellence. We should all be proud! He believed it was possible; therefore, he did the work and simply DID IT! You should give it a try--never doubt yourself or others!

I never conisdered that the wood pencils have different types of lead, although I did notice it growing up. Thanks for the explaination! I'll definitely try useing a 2B from now on.

@@cheyennemoore8380 If you like using wood pencils but want to experiment with different leads, I can't recommend highly enough getting yourself a pencil lead holder as your primary drawing tool. It is what it sounds like. It's basically an empty pen with a clamp at the tip that you put long cylinders of lead in to use. You can sharpen the lead, etc, without the presence of wood shavings and the unpredictable nature of splintering wood, or the pencil getting shorter and shorter as you sharpen it. The lead refills are about as thick as the lead in regular pencils, so it's not like mechanical pencils with their easily breakable 0.3 - 0.7mm leads. For all intents and purposes it should just be considered a woodless, refillable pencil. Once you have the holder, you just buy lead refills, akin to how you buy lead refills for mechanical pencils, which allows you to pick up an assortment of leads of various hardnesses and softnesses for you to experiment with, without ever changing up the feeling of the tool in your hand. They're also not mechanically complex, so once you get one, you'll have it for YEARS. I've had mine for over 20 (mine is a Staedtler brand lead holder, if anyone cares.)

Best of luck :) As for my tics, yes I notice I usually don’t do them while drawing. Although instead I usually move/lick my lips a LOT haha have to always have chapstick on hand. But I’ve found a few different things that can usually drown them out but not many. One of them is lifting weights actually
